00:02 - It's been many editions where it happens
00:05 already the first day.
00:06 This year it's kind of, it looked like a nice parkour
00:09 with some action every day.
00:10 (dramatic music)
00:14 - It's a flat day, so I think it still can be stressful
00:16 and can be a hard finish, so hopefully it will be nice
00:19 for us riders as well, if we can manage to get the results.
00:22 So, I'm looking forward to it.
00:28 - The Arctic Race of Norway, the 10th edition,
00:31 finally underway.
00:32 Stage one, destination Alta, the high plains leading down
00:36 to the coast and a really spiteful circuit at the end,
00:41 having to be taken two and three quarter times.
00:43 Would it be a sprint?
00:44 Well, six riders thought otherwise
00:46 and were busy helping themselves to intermediate points.
00:48 - One minute 40, we got one minute 40 seconds.
00:53 - Well, the glap was gradually pared down
00:57 as the chase was invoked.
00:58 Unix and Team DSM really intending to dominate the day.
01:03 - One minute 20, we got one minute 20 seconds.
01:06 - With under 80 kilometers to go,
01:09 between 80 and 90 seconds only was the advantage.
01:13 Would they get home?
01:14 In the end, it was a group destined to split in two
01:19 and offer opportunities to others.
01:22 Cutting through the dramatic scenery,
01:24 that's what this race is all about.
01:26 What the fans turned out in force
01:27 as we hit the circuit of Alta,
01:29 doesn't matter how steep a test is,
01:32 it depends on how you race it.
01:34 And this was full gas.
01:36 - The advantage at the top of the climb, 25 seconds.
01:43 - Bauer's push split the break in half.
01:45 - Three counter-attacking riders,
01:47 three drop riders have been caught by the peloton.
01:49 So race situation is three in the lead, then the peloton.
01:54 - Two laps of 15 kilometers a piece.
01:57 Who would get home first?
01:59 The gap now down to just 46 seconds,
02:04 but are still helping himself.
02:06 30 kilometers to go, Alta expects drama
02:12 and it was about to get it.
02:14 Bauer in charge,
02:15 he'd picked up many bonus seconds along the way.
02:17 That would give him a good position overall.
02:19 Did he have enough mountains points
02:20 with one climb still to come with double points on offer?
02:24 Slowly but surely the gap started to fade.
02:27 25 kilometers from home and just two now remained.
02:31 Rennoy would be given the Competitivity Award for the day,
02:36 but to be honest,
02:37 anyone from the break could have taken it.
02:39 Time for the peloton to get itself into color order.
02:46 Lead out trains were gonna be thin on the ground.
02:50 - And the breakaway, and the breakaway,
02:52 the front two have been caught.
02:54 The front two have been caught, the back is bunched.
02:57 - One more lap remaining.
03:01 For whom would the bell toll?
03:03 Big questions, simple answer, it had to be somebody fast.
03:07 And so it was that it was time for somebody to feel lucky.
03:15 Darrell Impey took off, lit the blue touch paper,
03:19 and went like a rocket.
03:21 Impey has done this many times before.
03:23 He's had great success with it in the past.
03:26 Would it be the same today?
03:28 A veteran, 38 years of age,
03:30 he just kept looking back to check on the gap,
03:34 which swelled to about 18 seconds.
03:37 The kilometers were coming down, he started to roll,
03:40 and the peloton was about to rock.
03:43 - Four seconds, four seconds with one K to go,
03:47 four seconds, one coaster to go.
03:49 Underneath the flamme rouge,
03:51 it was gonna take a bit of talent to get home first.
03:54 Favorite of the start of the day was Alberto Dainese.
03:58 Would there be any catching him once he hit the front?
04:00 Dainese to the line, he's up there in front,
04:03 nobody's gonna catch him, could be a photo,
04:06 no need at all, by a bike length, the Italian takes it.
04:10 - Today a bit of pressure.
04:13 All the guys rode really well,
04:16 and the circle was not easy to be at the front.
04:20 When I had the space, I could pass the guys,
04:23 and I'm happy that I finished it off.
04:25 - An emotional Dainese,
04:30 taking the day in so many different ways,
04:32 leading the race overall, leading the points,
04:35 and the young riders' classification as well.
04:37 Quality will out, and it certainly did today.
04:41 Dainese, can he repeat the feat tomorrow?
04:44 He doesn't think he can hold the jersey
04:46 till the end of the race,
04:47 but he'll enjoy it while he has it.
04:50 A fine winner, leads by four seconds overall,
04:57 ahead of Hopps and Bauer, who's in the break.
05:00 Beautiful day, fabulous action,
05:03 and we'll have some more tomorrow, of course.
