00:00 A Commission on Audit report says Malacañang spent over Php 403 million on domestic and
00:06 international travel in 2022.
00:09 Travel expenses cover transportation, per diem, ferryage, passport and visa processing,
00:14 and other related expenses to the trip.
00:17 Presidential Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil attributes the rise in spending to
00:21 both the 2021 lockdown and the "opening of the economy and lifting of restrictions" in
00:27 2022.
00:28 Malacañang adds there was an increase in the expenses on foreign trips of President
00:31 Ferdinand Marcos Jr. because his office, quote, "received a huge volume of invitations for
00:36 the President."
00:37 Marcos earlier justified these trips by telling critics to focus on the supposed returns on
00:42 investment.
00:43 But, so far, the administration has only been able to present total pledges and not finalized
00:48 investments in the Philippines.
00:50 The office of the President seeks a Php 1.14 billion fund for travel expenses in 2024.
