Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad shares his views on the historical religious landscape of India. He said that every individual in the country was originally a Hindu. Azad pointed out that the emergence of Islam occurred roughly 1,500 years ago, whereas Hinduism has ancient roots. He mentioned that certain Muslims might have arrived from external sources and served in the Mughal army, eventually leading to conversions from Hinduism to Islam within India.

00:00 Islam has been around for 1500 years.
00:02 Hinduism is very old.
00:04 The rest of the Muslims have been converted from Hindus.
00:07 Is this why everything in India was born in religion?
00:12 He is Ghulam Nabi Azad, now a known critic of Congress.
00:18 His take, Hinduism is the oldest religion
00:21 and that Hinduism predates Islam
00:23 and Muslims in India are a result of conversion.
00:26 This pits him closer or maybe likeable to the ruling party, the BJP.
00:31 With comments like these,
00:33 is Ghulam Nabi Azad trying to cozy up to the BJP?
00:36 Well, at least that's what the political pundits would want to think.
00:41 In our India,
00:43 Islam is the only religion.
00:47 It has been around for 1500 years.
00:51 Hinduism is very old.
00:54 The rest of the Muslims have been converted from Hindus.
01:04 For example, in Kashmir,
01:07 600 years ago, all the Muslims were Pandits.
01:12 They converted to Islam.
01:15 That's why I said, everything was born in religion.
01:19 So why would Ghulam Nabi make such statements?
01:23 Well, for one, he has launched a new party in Kashmir,
01:26 the Democratic Progressive Azad Party,
01:29 and is certainly looking for partners when it comes to the polls.
01:33 Secondly, he has been a known Congress baiter.
01:37 He has questioned the Congress leadership since his resignation.
01:40 Previously, too, he has expressed his views
01:43 that the consultative structure of the Congress was dismantled by Rahul Gandhi.
01:48 He also lamented the sidelining of seasoned leaders
01:51 and the emergence of an inexperienced clique of psychophants
01:55 managing the party's affairs.
01:56 Back to his observation about the historical context of religions in India,
02:01 Azad was speaking in Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir.
02:04 The Union territory has seen many changes since the abrogation of Article 370.
02:09 The 73-year-old politician has spent nearly five decades in Congress,
02:14 had stints in both houses of Parliament,
02:17 and served on key posts including the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir
02:21 and as Union Minister.
02:23 But now, with delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir imminent
02:27 and possible polls soon,
02:28 political parties in the valley have their task cut out.
02:32 And needless to say, the political parties, too,
02:34 are exploring all options to woo the voters and the national parties alike.
