00:00 Rice is still expensive.
00:02 And for the consumers to be able to afford it,
00:05 DTI's policy is that corn and sweet potatoes can be an alternative to rice.
00:10 This is Bernal Trelles.
00:12 Compared to Php 40 to Php 42 per kilo last week,
00:19 the price of local rice was increased by Php 10
00:23 in New Market in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
00:26 While imported rice, which was Php 50 before,
00:30 has now increased to Php 60 per kilo.
00:33 According to the provincial agriculturists,
00:35 they are already laying plans to increase the production of rice in the province.
00:40 In some markets in Quezon City,
00:42 the price of rice is Php 47 to Php 59.
00:46 In monitoring of the Department of Agriculture in the markets in Metro Manila,
00:50 the price of rice increased compared to the beginning of August.
00:53 It's heavy in the pockets, especially for the poor like us.
00:57 According to Malacanang, the supply of rice is enough,
00:59 but the prices are different for the families.
01:02 That's why President Bongbong Marcos ordered
01:04 to chase rice hoarders and manipulate the price of rice
01:08 that the lean months are temporarily before the harvest.
01:11 But the Department of Agriculture also admitted that
01:14 the imports of rice are lower now compared to the same time in 2022.
01:19 It is said that more imports are needed as preparation for El Nino.
01:23 We are recommending around 500,000 metric tons
01:27 to arrive between November and January 2021
01:31 so that we would be ensured of sufficient supply.
01:35 Some congressmen are angry.
01:37 Why are they hoping for importation?
01:40 It's all about importation.
01:43 We can't live on our own anymore.
01:47 Before, we export rice.
01:50 Now, everyone is importing rice.
01:52 It is said that production is getting stronger according to the DA,
01:55 but it can't be done immediately.
01:58 This is also included in the study of climate change
02:00 and the shift of production from wet season to dry season.
02:04 We should focus on improving the productivity of our local production.
02:09 And that is actually what we aim to do.
02:12 We are doing now, re-strategizing our rice program.
02:19 According to DTI, one of the things they are doing
02:22 to lower the price of agricultural products
02:25 is linking farmers to supermarkets.
02:29 Even though there is a study conducted in UP
02:31 on the high price of rice
02:33 regarding the use of sweet potatoes and white corn
02:35 as an alternative to rice,
02:37 this study is still needed.
02:39 We need to adapt and adjust our diet.
02:46 Diet is very traditional.
02:50 We are used to eating rice during breakfast.
02:53 But there are other alternatives.
02:55 We can eat sweet potatoes, white corn.
02:58 There are proposals like that.
03:00 When I was UP president,
03:02 for example,
03:03 I'm not saying I'm pushing it now.
03:05 We made experiments on rice-corn mix.
03:09 70% rice, 30% white corn.
03:13 We tested the nutritional value,
03:16 the taste, the acceptability,
03:20 and it was a pass.
03:23 For GMA Integrated News,
03:25 Brunette Reyes is your witness.
