00:00 kind of bragging on you and the fall camp you've had. He said you guys had a
00:03 talk after spring. What, go back to, I mean, what did he kind of tell
00:07 you after spring ball and how do you feel like fall camp's been?
00:11 The conversation was pretty straightforward. I was able to make plays in the spring, but I knew that I had to gain weight to be able to compete with the guys that they looked at as the ones in the two.
00:21 So, I just really honed in on gaining that weight and continuing to make plays. I was able to do that this fall.
00:28 You came in, did you play linebacker when you came in?
00:32 Yeah, I played the same position as Sierra. It was pretty much the same, but we did a lot of dropping. We played more of a 3-4 for her last year.
00:42 Being down in the trenches a little bit, this 4-3 defense is a little different, but I've always been a D-line man. I've always been aggressive.
00:51 So, when you came in, I think the COVID year you played 4-5 games in I think redshirt. Did you get injured the next year?
00:57 Yeah, I went down with a tip. It was an injury.
01:00 So, did it take a while to get back? Did you feel like last year that you were all the way healthy?
01:06 Not all the way healthy, but I would say about 85% maybe. Just continuing to work.
01:15 So, the coaching set, was this kind of a new start for you?
01:19 It was pretty fresh. It was great to have a fresh start actually. I can show them what I can do at a consistent rate and they will take a note of that.
01:27 Does the mindset have to change a little bit when you go from where you were previously to being one of the guys up front?
01:31 Is there a different mindset to finding success there?
01:34 Of course. I have to be more vocal. I have to show a different type of leadership. I have to show them that I can be a leader.
01:41 What kind of stuff do you have to do to make yourself look like a leader or become a leader?
01:45 Cheer my teammates on. That's something that I have to work on.
01:50 Really being a guy for everybody else, not just being a selfish guy. That's not good for a team.
01:56 None of us are selfish. We have to be here for each other and together to win for this program.
02:01 Kind of going off of that, a lot of the guys are saying, for as dominant as you guys were last season, you guys can be even better this year.
02:07 Why do you feel like this defense can be better than last year's?
02:10 We have so much depth. We're about five deep in every position. A lot of guys can play.
02:15 Like Coach says, if somebody goes down, even though you believe in the next person, there's supposed to be no drop off.
02:21 That's where we pretty much have shown.
02:23 You've been around since Jermaine got here. He's been through a lot of injuries in his career.
02:29 How different are you guys up front when Jermaine is in there and healthy?
02:34 I love Jermaine. Jermaine comes in and he makes plays.
02:38 I wouldn't say we're too much different because we have a lot of guys. Jermaine, he's a baller.
02:45 From your standpoint, when you look at the competition, you look at the guys, everybody's talked about leadership.
02:51 Ashton has been that guy. Are there other guys stepping up? You mentioned you try to do it.
02:56 Are there other guys that are stepping up, that are becoming leaders?
02:58 Ashton, Steven, I would even say Ramon. I like Ramon's leadership.
03:03 He's a lead by example type of guy. He's going to work every day.
03:09 Even Desmond Tell, too, he's a leader as well on his team.
