Afghan pilot who fought alongside British troops speaks out as he fights deportation

An Afghan pilot threatened with deportation to Rwanda has called on Rishi Sunak to “keep the promise” the government made to its Afghan allies who fought alongside British troops.

The Independent’s Holly Bancroft explains the events that have left an Afghan pilot hero in limbo after his arrival to Britain by a small boat.

The air force lieutenant, who served alongside coalition troops, urged the prime minister to intervene in his case after finding no safe route to Britain from Afghanistan, where he had been in hiding from the ruling Taliban forces.

The Independent has been campaigning for the UK government to try to resolve the pilot’s case, allowing him and his family to live in Britain.
