00:00 But I think that passion to teach did not come to me until I was sent to school.
00:06 And I think in my story, the best part of my story is not about me.
00:12 It's not about what I've done.
00:14 It's about the students that I taught and the community that I served that totally changed
00:19 my life.
00:20 And I taught in an orang asli school in the state of Pahang, in a rural school there for
00:25 10 years.
00:26 I was telling Vicky earlier that the first three months that I was there, I thought of
00:31 quitting.
00:32 Quitting?
00:33 Quitting immediately.
00:34 Because, you know, I had a very different way of life, different language, different
00:41 culture, different expectations altogether.
00:45 I thought that was not for me.
00:49 Because my idea of teaching was, you go to school, you teach well in a good classroom,
00:53 you know, with computers and all of that.
00:55 And go back at one o'clock.
00:56 Maybe.
00:57 Let me just correct you there.
00:58 Most teachers don't go back at one o'clock anymore, I think, with all the other things
01:05 altogether.
01:06 But I thought that my career would be something that was very different.
01:10 But my students and the community, they gave meaning to not just my career as an educator,
01:16 but as a human being, as a person.
01:19 I think that's most important.
01:20 You know, he has taught many students.
01:25 When he left, he said, "No, not in three months. We'll quit."
01:30 I was thinking that.
01:31 When I thought of trying something, I was so happy to see such a big recognition, such a big achievement in so many people's lives.
