IPL newcomers Gujarat Titans confirmed their spot in Qualifier 1 with a seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha hit an unbeaten 67 as Gujarat Titans reached 137 for 3 with five balls to spare against CSK for their 10th win in a blockbuster debut IPL season. 00:02 There has been a general belief for the tournament
00:21 that Gujarat is one of the weaker teams.
00:23 So-called, the batting is not the best.
00:26 So how was the conversation before the start
00:28 of the tournament?
00:29 We had guys that are great from the start.
00:31 Yeah, I mean, listen, there's a big difference
00:33 between looking at a team on paper
00:35 and looking at a team out in the middle performing.
00:38 These are all great players.
00:39 And they've all done really well at various points in their time.
00:43 I think the most important thing is that you back your players
00:46 and you believe in them.
00:47 You create opportunities for them
00:48 to showcase their skills, rather than they get one or two games
00:52 and they don't perform and they're out.
00:53 And I think that's been very important for us
00:56 as we balance the team out.
00:58 From a batting perspective, we've
00:59 got wonderful left-hand, right-hand combinations.
01:02 We've got guys that can hit the ball at the death
01:06 and close games out.
01:07 And we've got some good options up front as well.
01:11 So I think we've got a well-balanced batting lineup.
01:13 And one's got to be careful just to look at names
01:17 and say, that's a good batting team,
01:19 or that isn't a good batting team.
01:20 I think our batting plans have been fairly structured
01:23 throughout the tournament.
01:25 We look at it from a team context.
01:27 We look at the importance of partnerships.
01:29 And we always know--
01:30 every team would be the same-- that your power play
01:33 is an important component to that.
01:35 I don't think there's any specific
01:36 that we need to say to him, because he knows how to play
01:39 the power play really well.
01:40 The most important thing is that guys
01:41 play to their strengths and their abilities.
01:44 He's a great player of the short ball.
01:46 And he takes advantage of length really well
01:49 as a batsman in those power play overs,
01:52 being able to hit the ball over the inner ring.
01:54 So for us, it's more just how we put our innings together
01:58 as a unit of batsmen.
02:01 We're not always going to fire in the power play,
02:03 but that's OK.
02:04 We've got batters and experienced players
02:05 in the middle that can also come in and close games out.
02:08 So I think looking at the batsman as a unit
02:11 rather than as individuals is important for us.
