00:01:01 Right, so this week we start with Sheffield Wednesday, who fell to a 2-1 defeat at home
00:01:07 to Southampton in a game which the Owls were outplayed during the first half, and went
00:01:13 1-0 down inside 10 minutes after an Adam Armstrong deflected goal, before a Lee Gregory equaliser
00:01:19 in the 54th minute. Unfortunately, former Sheffield United player Shea Adams came on
00:01:25 to help the Saints snatch all three points from Chiscombe Winyouth's men. What positives
00:01:31 do you think the manager can take from that performance, Leon?
00:01:34 I think probably that they didn't go under in the first half. Southampton's progression
00:01:40 I think was somewhere like 77-78%, and I'm not quite sure, that's what I was thinking
00:01:46 in my head. It must have been something pretty similar in the second half, perhaps not as
00:01:52 high, but yeah, they were very impressive, Southampton, in the first half. There's a
00:01:58 bit of a school of thought sometimes. It can be not a bad juncture to play relegated sides
00:02:05 straight away after they return to the league, they're in the Championship, the squad's
00:02:11 in a bit of flux. Players, star players leave, but yeah, it certainly didn't apply against
00:02:19 Southampton. It was a privilege to watch James Ward-Prouse at times. He's a player that you
00:02:27 see them every now and again, top players dropping into the Championship, and he's so
00:02:33 far below his level it was untrue. So there was obviously a lot of speculation about his
00:02:38 future, but for the time being he's still a Southampton player. He showed the class
00:02:44 player that he is, he did take on long parts of the game, and they were really strong down
00:02:52 the right-hand side with Teller and Walker-Peters. Obviously Teller was great on loan at Burnley
00:02:59 last year. So yeah, they were certainly not a relegated side who looked to have some early
00:03:08 season issues. They dominated Wednesday, but I suppose the good thing is that I thought
00:03:13 that Wednesday were too deep and sort of too negative in the first half. I think the interval
00:03:22 came at a decent time. They were a little bit braver, pushed a little bit further forward
00:03:26 in the second half, and without creating loads of chances, managed to get a good goal from
00:03:35 Lee Gregory. The crowd sort of bought into it a bit, and I'm obviously disappointed.
00:03:41 I think it would have been a great point if they'd managed to chisel out a draw against
00:03:46 the good Southampton side. It wasn't to be, but I thought the crowd reaction at the end
00:03:52 was pretty good and sort of maturing in some respects. I think the Wednesday I just realised
00:03:59 that it's a big jump in class and standard that players are going to be facing every
00:04:05 week. Disappointing that the home record, I don't think they've had this since Varsity
00:04:12 beat them in September in the league last year. It was something like 19 or 20 games.
00:04:18 Disappointment in that regard. But yeah, they showed some fight and a bit more determination
00:04:29 and a bit more proactive in the second half. But there's got to be patience, isn't there?
00:04:33 They've obviously made quite a lot of sign-ins relatively late in the day before the start
00:04:39 of the season. Quite a lot are improving at the Championship level, playing in continental
00:04:47 football. It's got to take a while for them to get up to speed and get used to the Championship.
00:04:55 One of the most competitive and tough divisions around. Other players as well, Ashley Fletcher,
00:05:02 she's going to take a bit of time to get up to speed as well. Obviously they just got
00:05:07 through in the league cup game against Stockport but by all accounts they weren't particularly
00:05:13 terrific. So I think there's going to be a need for patience at the start of the season
00:05:17 while they get their players bedded in. They obviously want to do more in the window. I
00:05:21 think they need some more pace and craft. Like a few managers that we might go on to
00:05:28 talk about, I think they'll be wanting to get to the end of this summer window. Obviously
00:05:35 the game just after then, the two weeks break for the international fixtures. And then you
00:05:39 can have more of a barometer of them when it starts again in mid-September. But for
00:05:44 the time being, Wednesday and the fuel, they're just going to have to try and chip away and
00:05:49 try and get an okay sort of tally of points to ensure there's not too much panic.
00:05:57 Yeah I was just watching on TV, Leon was there at the ground, but I sort of came to
00:06:04 similar conclusions about those games. I mean, Wednesday are going into the season unprepared
00:06:10 which is not surprising really. Or not properly prepared, but which is surprising really when
00:06:17 you think how late in the day they were forced into that managerial change. And Southampton
00:06:24 haven't done a lot of their business too, but in Southampton's case, they haven't
00:06:29 lost a lot of the players they were expecting to. He wasn't used but Laffey was on the
00:06:36 bench and as Leon mentioned, Ward-Prouse shouldn't be in the Championship, he's too good for
00:06:44 that. So yeah, while Southampton had a lot of Premier League quality still there that
00:06:51 probably won't be in September, Sheffield Wednesday are still evolving from that League
00:06:56 One side. So it was quite heartening to see that refusal to buckle. Because they were
00:07:07 outplayed in that first half, but the thing about Russell Martin teams, when you think
00:07:11 about his Swansea and MK Don's team, is they can outplay you without actually putting you
00:07:17 to bed. And Wednesday hung in there, I thought they went a bit more direct in the second
00:07:23 half which again was good to see, they weren't just wedded to one way of playing. And yeah,
00:07:31 they nearly got a result which you wouldn't say they deserved on the balance of play,
00:07:37 but perhaps they deserved for their efforts. I thought Lee Gregory was very isolated in
00:07:43 the first half and they could have done with a bit more pace up front. They tried to change
00:07:55 it in the second half, didn't they? And briefly put one of the new lads down the middle when
00:08:05 they brought Masaba on. But yeah, clearly that's an area they need to address going
00:08:11 forward. But more than anything, it was good just to see the resilience and the attitude
00:08:16 of that team and they can build from there. Because obviously, if you don't have that
00:08:21 as a starting point, you're in trouble. But if you do, then you can get the other areas
00:08:27 better. So I wouldn't be, although they were comfortably outplayed on the flow of the game,
00:08:34 I wouldn't be too downhearted if I was a Wednesday fan watching that. There's enough
00:08:42 there to work with and build on, I think.
00:08:45 I think it was a little bit of a stick in some respects to beat them with last season,
00:08:49 wasn't it? They weren't spectacularly great on the eye, but they did have a resolve there,
00:08:56 didn't they? Obviously, everyone knows about the proud home record and they had the long
00:09:01 unbeaten run. It does suggest that they have got some good, solid senior professionals
00:09:07 who have been around the block and can manage games pretty well. I think that resolve and
00:09:14 that determination will... They're going to need that this season as much as the new managers
00:09:19 trying to implement a new style of play. That's going to take time. And certainly I think
00:09:25 for the first part of the season, maybe carrying on going forward until everyone's comfortable
00:09:33 with the style of play and fully adaptable with it, they're going to have to grind it
00:09:38 out a little bit. I think the start of the season as well, a lot's made about new signings,
00:09:46 new sides, this and that. But I think primarily there's that many games in the first part
00:09:50 of the season. It's just about results, really, isn't it? It's a little bit like the end almost.
00:09:54 You can play your nice stuff when the season's really in full swing. But I think early on,
00:10:04 a lot of it is just about getting a few points on the board to settle things down.
00:10:09 Yeah, I think it's just about adding a bit of championship quality, as I said, a bit
00:10:14 of pace, a bit more energy to that solid base and not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
00:10:23 Obviously it's far too early to be judging the signings that have come in so far, but
00:10:29 there'll certainly be more to come. And hopefully they can get that right blend and not lose
00:10:34 what was good about last season, but take it on another level. It was good to see some
00:10:42 of those familiar traits still there, because the worst thing a new manager can do, we've
00:10:49 seen it at other clubs all the time over history, a new manager comes in and loses what was
00:10:54 good in the first place trying to bring something new to the squad. That didn't seem to be the
00:10:58 case and hopefully it won't be going forward.
00:11:01 It might be interesting, the goalkeeper as well, obviously Vazquez came in, he saved
00:11:05 a few penalties in the shootout, maybe a decision there in goal for Saturday at all between
00:11:10 him and Dawson, but we'll see about that.
00:11:14 And our attention now turns to Leeds United, who had to dig deep when they hosted Cardiff
00:11:19 City after going 2-0 down inside 40 minutes of the first half. After the interval, captain
00:11:25 Liam Cooper's towering header gave the home supporters some hope before Crescencio Somerville
00:11:31 stepped up to help snatch a draw for the Whites, which based off the match statistics was the
00:11:38 very least that they deserved. What did you make of the performance and have there been
00:11:43 any updates regarding Liam Cooper's injury, Stuart?
00:11:46 Yes, they have and they're not good. We're expecting Cooper to be out for up to eight
00:11:52 weeks with a rupture. Crescencio Somerville as well has picked up a groin injury so they're
00:11:58 not having much luck at the moment with injuries. They had a very young bench on Sunday and
00:12:06 they're another club. It feels to me as though the start of the season has just come a bit
00:12:12 too early for them again because of late managerial changes and the way the transfer window has
00:12:18 panned out. But I think he used a good phrase there, they had to dig deep. And again, it
00:12:24 was encouraging to see that they did that. They shot themselves in the foot with a lot
00:12:30 of the problems that we saw last season but they had that desire to keep going. You sometimes
00:12:39 wonder about the heart of some of the teams that have been relegated, whether they'll
00:12:45 be a bit of a hangover, whether they will be able to dig deep in times like that. They
00:12:50 showed they can do that. As you alluded to, I think it was 25 chances they created so
00:12:58 their attacking play was good up to a point. The midfield too of Ethan Ampadu, who has
00:13:08 been their big signing so far. And Archie Gray, who for a year now has been there, probably
00:13:16 more for those who follow Leeds more closely. But for a long time he's been the big hope
00:13:23 through the academy. He lived up to the hype with a really good debut. So there was a real
00:13:28 mix of positives and negatives there for Leeds. But again, as we said with Sheffield Wednesday,
00:13:36 you're just not going to get the complete picture after the pre-season they've had.
00:13:43 They've lost a lot of players but they've lost too many of them on loan due to clauses
00:13:50 in the contract that have taken matters out of their own hands, which means they haven't
00:13:54 been able to bring in the money to then bring in all the signings they need to do. I think
00:14:00 it's going to be the other side of September's international break before we can really make
00:14:04 too many judgements at all about Leeds United. But I say that there were good things to cling
00:14:10 to and there were definitely things that need to be worked on as well.
00:14:14 Yeah, I agree with what Stuart said there. I think just seeing that grit and that resolve,
00:14:21 you know, they're old-fashioned virtues but in the Championship they'll always be needed.
00:14:27 And it was good in that regard to see Leeds show a bit of that, show a bit of gumption.
00:14:34 It did particularly show great levels of it last season. Like Stuart said, you've got
00:14:42 to really gauge Leeds after the international window. You'll find out which players really
00:14:49 want to be there. There's obviously the Adams situation, it looks like he'll be off. Gonto
00:14:56 as well, Somerville as well. So it's difficult to really know what Leeds' squad will look
00:15:04 like come September 2nd. You just hope that they can do some late business. Obviously
00:15:11 the Premier League clubs are in the process of finalising the squads now. They know what
00:15:16 they've got, they know what they'll let out. You would hope that Leeds would be a pretty
00:15:21 attractive destination, certainly for Premier League players going out on loan. They'll
00:15:28 be able to beat their rivals to get a fair few players of decent quality in. But for
00:15:34 the time being it's going to be a scrap and a fight. I mentioned Sheffield Wednesday just
00:15:38 eking around, just getting what they can. That's going to be the same with Leeds. You
00:15:42 look at their early season fixtures, I think any time Leeds are in the Championship they're
00:15:47 going to be challenged mentally and the fortitude of the players. A lot of teams in this division
00:15:55 will always like to beat Leeds, that's just the way it is. They go to Birmingham, they've
00:16:00 got to go to a difficult one at a pump-up and very good at switch-side later on in the
00:16:06 month. They've got a home derby with Sheffield Wednesday and then a little bit further down
00:16:10 the line, I think they've got Millwall away and Hull away. So serious examinations early
00:16:17 in the season. I like the way that Daniel Favre has come in and spoken. He's totally
00:16:25 under no illusions and he's going to take some turning around. I think people are just
00:16:34 going to have to be patient with him. He'll know what he's working with at the start of
00:16:41 September. Hopefully he'll have some time before the next international break and then
00:16:45 we can maybe start to see a Leeds side in his image a little bit more.
00:16:50 I think the thing for Leeds, Favre said he's focused at the moment on incomings rather
00:16:56 than outgoings. I think the quicker they get the clarity on those players and others that
00:17:02 Leon was talking about in terms of who's going out the door, the better. We saw with
00:17:07 Ampadu's debut, we saw with the way Sam Byron settled things down when we came on and I
00:17:14 think we know enough about Karl Darlow from his time on loan at Hull and his previous
00:17:19 clubs like Newcastle that this is a man who knows how to make good signings for the Championship.
00:17:26 So the hope's just got to be that he has enough time and enough budget to bring in the right
00:17:33 players because I'm pretty confident, for example, if he knew what he was working with,
00:17:38 which won't be the case, but if he knew what he was working with, say a week left of the
00:17:42 window, I'm pretty confident he could use those resources to put together a really competitive
00:17:50 squad. The worry is that stuff happens so late on deadline day that Leeds aren't able
00:17:56 to react but at least, as I said, they've not brought much money in at all for the nine
00:18:02 that's left but at least it's sort of cleansed the dressing room of some of the players that
00:18:06 don't want to be there. That's really important to get them out and that process has to continue
00:18:14 because I'm sure it's not run its course yet. I do believe that when it does, Fark will
00:18:23 be able to identify the right sort of people because we know his Championship record is
00:18:29 a really good one. The issue is that it potentially could give the likes of Southampton and Leicester
00:18:39 and numerous other clubs too big a head start but if Leeds at least show the resilience
00:18:45 they did on Sunday then hopefully, much as Leon said about Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds
00:18:50 can just get what they can out of this period and then really kick on after the break.
00:18:56 It's sort of minimising the short-term gain for the long-term gain, isn't it?
00:19:03 That's exactly it, yeah.
00:19:05 And next our attention turns to Middlesbrough who fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat when they
00:19:10 hosted Millwall. Michael Carrick's men were able to withstand the attacks that Millwall
00:19:14 threw at them until the 79th minute when the deadlock was broken. What do you feel that
00:19:19 Michael Carrick will be able to take from that result, Leon?
00:19:24 I think it was more reinforcing what most people realise that Middlesbrough need. They
00:19:32 need a little bit more up front, don't they? Obviously the situation is fluid with Hubert
00:19:38 Atpom, he's missed pre-season with a knee injury. There's a lot of speculation about
00:19:42 him and Sheffield United are keen on bringing him in by all accounts in the final year of
00:19:49 his contract. So they're in a little bit of limbo really, isn't it, for Middlesbrough?
00:19:55 If they're going to do anything in the market it'll be with the money that they get from
00:20:02 Atpom. But if it goes on and goes on in the window and he's sold right to the end, it's
00:20:07 like Stuart points to with Leeds, you can end up selling somebody and you've not got
00:20:12 your ducks in a row to bring in some replacements. So yeah, we'll just have to wait and see on
00:20:20 the Atpom situation. But they do look, without him, they've not really got recognised number
00:20:28 nine as such, even though ironically he played a little bit deeper than he did last season.
00:20:33 But he's still a natural striker, isn't he? They've brought in Morgan Rodgers and Sam
00:20:41 Silvera, players who can play out wide and come inside. They've switched around, they
00:20:48 did the game in the EFL Cup against Huddersfield. They did that, they started on the wing and
00:20:57 they swapped and one came inside, one would go out. So they can play in the middle but
00:21:02 they're not natural strikers. But certainly, I think even if they manage to resolve Atpom
00:21:11 and he stays, they'll need another central striker with Cameron Arch who's not going
00:21:18 to be coming back by all accounts. He played Matt Crooks there as well. He's really an
00:21:24 attacking midfielder, isn't he? He's not what you'd call a bow defied centre forward.
00:21:30 So yeah, it's just show with middles but they were pleasing on the eye aspects of the play
00:21:35 against Millwall. But lack that stinging front of goal. I think the other issue as well is
00:21:43 a little bit further back in the pitch. For me they certainly need another left back.
00:21:49 He's given a chance to Hayden Coulson. To me he's more suited to playing as a wing back
00:21:56 than a left back. So I think Carey could be keen to bring another option there, another
00:22:03 forward option, maybe another midfield option as well. Obviously, Johnny Howson, great player
00:22:10 that he is. He's not in the first flush of youth, is he? So I think long term they'll
00:22:15 be looking at bringing in another option there. But yeah, the good thing is they managed to
00:22:22 get back to winning ways in the week against Huddersfield. I know it's only the league
00:22:29 cup and it's got its knockers but it was the first win in six or seven games. So
00:22:35 that's certainly welcome but they've got a tough test at Coventry on Saturday. They've
00:22:43 been busy in the market spending the money that they've got from the sale of Victor Gorka.
00:22:49 And yeah, I think they're like quite a few clubs in the championship middles but they
00:22:55 need to do some key business before the end of the window if they're going to
00:23:00 manage from their perspective build on what was a very encouraging run under Michael Carrick.
00:23:07 Yeah, I mean the irony was during that run they had goals from absolutely everywhere
00:23:12 it felt. Well, not from everywhere but they felt full of goals I should say.
00:23:20 But yeah, of course it's not just ACPOM, they've lost Cameron Archer and Aaron Ramsey going back
00:23:26 after their loans as well. It just shows how fluid football can be from season to season.
00:23:32 As Leon says, it's the uncertainty over ACPOM. I think there was a feeling even at the back end
00:23:40 of last season that if Middlesbrough didn't go up they might lose ACPOM. But everybody's been
00:23:47 waiting and waiting to see what's happening. You know, Sheffield United have been linked but
00:23:54 obviously they've only recently had an influx of cash from selling Illiman and Dive so that's kind
00:23:59 of been on hold. It must be difficult for managers, particularly in this FFP area. I mean,
00:24:06 I think broadly what FFP is trying to do in that respect is good but it does mean that you're in
00:24:13 this waiting pattern sometimes of having to sell people before you can bring people in and that's
00:24:20 where Middlesbrough are right now which is really annoying for them because the way they finished
00:24:25 last season you would have really hoped that they could come out of the blocks flying this season
00:24:30 and really carry that momentum forward. But instead, they're not starting again by any means
00:24:37 but losing those goal-scoring players and uncertainty over ACPOM, losing Ryan Giles again
00:24:44 for a while, they would have been hopeful of getting him back. It's just stuttered the momentum
00:24:51 but there were lots of clubs in that boat. We've already talked about a few as it is.
00:24:56 You've just got to get on with it and it's an early test of a young manager in Michael Carrick
00:25:05 and we'll see how he rises to it. I think a lot of clubs as well, Stuart,
00:25:10 I think they're going to be in the market for a pretty small amount of players at the end of
00:25:14 the window and other quality players that a lot of these championship clubs are after
00:25:19 to firm up the promotion aspirations. In the past, Steve Gibson's pulled a few rabbits out of hats
00:25:27 hasn't he late on in windows and a borough have kept the proud edge of their eye really haven't
00:25:33 they in terms of big incoming targets. I know they've brought some, I suppose you could call
00:25:39 them project players, players with potential in the likes of Rodgers and Silveira and Gilbert,
00:25:47 Van den Berg. Their only real front line signing so far has been Dejan, the goalkeeper hasn't it.
00:25:53 From a Middlesbrough perspective, you just tell them they've got something up their sleeve.
00:25:59 Yeah and you wouldn't be surprised if again this season they're quite reliant on a couple of shrewd
00:26:05 loan signings and we all know that those sort of signings come late in the window when probably
00:26:10 their club's making their minds up and what have you. They should get good loan signings as well,
00:26:15 you would have thought with obviously Carrick's stature speaks for itself. They play a nice
00:26:22 attractive style of football so from that regard they should be a decent sell shouldn't they.
00:26:30 We'll have to see.
00:26:30 And our next stop is Hull City who paid a visit to Carrow Road where they fell to a late 2-1
00:26:36 defeat when they conceded a 96th minute winner which saw the three points stay with Norwich City.
00:26:42 What would you say Liam Rasinia can take away from his performance knowing that
00:26:47 we can expect a fair amount of business coming from the Tigers as the window carries on?
00:26:55 Yeah well I mean it's been a confusing and frustrating week for Liam Rasinia I think it's
00:27:02 fair to say. I mean if you looked at the Norwich game in isolation I think you'd be probably saying
00:27:09 some of the things that we were saying about Sheffield Wednesday with regards to their
00:27:14 opening game. By all accounts they were pretty poor in the first half at Carrow Road
00:27:19 but they managed to hang in there. It was a very controversial goal late on. Liam Rasinia is still
00:27:27 seething about that and I imagine if you're listening to this podcast a month or two down
00:27:32 the line he will be he's been so angry about it. But you know there was that caveat of the
00:27:40 resilience they showed to hang in and then they produced a very strange and disappointing
00:27:48 performance in the League Cup which I was at on Tuesday against Doncaster Rovers where they
00:27:53 just fell into a tactical trap where Doncaster just sat back and let them play from the goalkeeper
00:28:04 and Hull just didn't have the answers and didn't seem able to think on their feet
00:28:13 and deal with that. It was far too much backwards and sideways passing that really
00:28:19 really annoyed the fans and really annoyed Liam Rasinia. So he's got a lot of things to
00:28:26 work on ahead of a big derby game against Sheffield Wednesday to start their
00:28:35 Championship Home Programme. But again we seem to be saying this about every club that we can expect
00:28:44 quite a few changes down the line. That's just the nature of the way Hull City are at the moment.
00:28:50 I think Rasinia will have been really frustrated by Tuesday because you could see Hull were trying
00:28:58 to play the way that Rasinia has asked them to play but as I alluded to with Sheffield Wednesday
00:29:03 there needs to be more than that. You need to be able to think on your feet and just do something
00:29:08 a bit different at times. It might be go a bit more direct, it might be do something a little
00:29:15 bit different and they didn't seem to have that in them which considering we are now
00:29:20 what are we nine months down the line in terms of working with Rasinia. I was going to say I
00:29:28 think he'd be frustrated about that. I know he was frustrated about that because you could see it on
00:29:33 his face and hear it in his voice in the post-match press conference. So that kind of took away some
00:29:41 of the few positives that there were at Norwich which in itself was an annoying day for them.
00:29:46 Yeah I mean obviously when he was broken sort of long and at length really. When Rasinia came in
00:29:53 his first part of call was to stiffen Hull up, get some resolve and build some foundations and
00:29:58 he did that didn't he. A fair play to him. He pulled Hull out of trouble and they've got a
00:30:04 nice solid base. Look at them defensively, players come into the four like Alfie Jones and
00:30:13 McLaughlin but he's sort of that next step now. He's sort of taken it on almost isn't it and
00:30:18 sort of Hull early days but they're just not quite there are they at the minute. The sort of
00:30:23 combinations going forward and the sort of fluidity in the final third. He's spoken as well at length
00:30:33 about the fact of needing to be more ruthless. So yeah disappointing and he's a manager who
00:30:44 wears his heart on his sleeve. Liam you see him he doesn't sort of dress things up and
00:30:49 I was obviously very disappointed with the match on Tuesday and it's early in the season,
00:30:56 first home league game but it's a bit of a test isn't it really for Hull and I suppose
00:31:02 you feel Wednesday as well. Whoever can get three points if it turns out there's going to be a
00:31:10 winner. Psychologically it'll be a big lift won't it really. One of a few clubs as well
00:31:17 who have been on doing some late business. There's obviously talk of players going out as well you
00:31:24 know likes of Longman and Woods. From the fact that it's been quite a pretty quiet summer and
00:31:33 certainly a quiet summer by last season's standards where they were all willing with
00:31:40 and seem to be willing with absolutely everyone.
00:31:42 Yeah exactly it's like a different name each day wasn't it really. I think it's
00:31:49 going to be a pick up right at the end there. So yeah I'm just trying to find a way of
00:31:57 getting some attacking consistency into Hull and a way of playing
00:32:04 going forward and yeah I think it's quite a big game on Saturday.
00:32:08 I think the good thing for Hull is you know there's big lessons to learn from both of those
00:32:14 games. I made the point talking to Rossini afterwards that he said he'd never seen a team
00:32:22 play quite the way Grant McCann's Doncaster did where basically they let Matt Ingram have the ball
00:32:28 and then just marked up the 10 outfield players. He said he'd never seen that before but you can
00:32:35 guarantee you'll see that again now because other managers will see that video and do that.
00:32:40 The good thing is to have these lessons presented to them from a game at Norwich City and a League
00:32:47 Cup game because if we're being brutally honest they're not banking on winning the League Cup
00:32:53 and you can kind of budget for a defeat at Norwich City. It's not the worst result in the world.
00:33:01 So if they can address these issues early on and that after all is what Liam Rossini is all about
00:33:07 as a young coach, that's his forte, then they can be stronger for this week. It's better that they
00:33:15 have these issues now when there's time on the coaching field and a transfer window open to
00:33:22 address them later in the season but they do need addressing.
00:33:26 Huddersfield Town is our next port of call and they saw their season start with a 3-1
00:33:32 defeat away at Plymouth Argyle. The Terriers fell behind inside the first six minutes before levelling
00:33:38 the score at six minutes into added time at the end of the first half. However, the hosts scored
00:33:45 two more goals within three minutes late on in the second half. What do you think Neil Warnock
00:33:51 will do? What do you think his response will be to that performance, Leon?
00:33:56 Yeah, I mean it's like any side first up, you know, disappointing to lose on the opening weekend.
00:34:04 I thought it was a tough, well not just because of the geographical distance but obviously that
00:34:10 comes into it, a tough result as an opener as it could probably get away from home going to
00:34:17 Plymouth. You know, a team really pumped up after an outstanding promotion year. There was a hell
00:34:22 of a lot of expectation there at home park by the sound of it, not just because it's, you know,
00:34:28 Warnock coming back as well. He managed Plymouth in the mid-90s and has a lot of local connections
00:34:35 but, you know, it was the first home game at this level for about, I think it was about 12 or 13
00:34:39 years. So, Huddersfield have had all that to contend with. Yeah, I think it's disappointing
00:34:48 more for Warnock in terms of what he saw at the pitch at both ends, in both boxes really. He's
00:34:56 always a pain to point out that's where games are decided and, you know, town conceded some
00:35:05 poor goals, you know, a bit of a lack of communication between Helic and Lee Nicholls
00:35:11 and, you know, were good goals from a Plymouth perspective later on in the game but, you know,
00:35:16 Warnock could have, you know, looked at them and, you know, being too soft and too easy and they
00:35:22 missed a few chances at the other end as well. There was a good header for Giaradone, Josh Carrera
00:35:28 missed a chance, a decent chance as well. So, yeah, not the start that Huddersfield would have
00:35:35 been wanting after the heroics of the end of last season. Like a lot of Yorkshire clubs,
00:35:44 we keep speaking about it, you know, they need to do some bits of business ideally before the end
00:35:51 of the window. It's going to be tough. There's financial fair play considerations at Huddersfield,
00:35:58 there's not too much money in the kitty. You know, you just have to hope and trust Warnock,
00:36:05 you know, he's got a fair old contacts book to, you know, manage to bring in a few
00:36:13 senior striking options. You know, he said at his press conference before the Plymouth game that,
00:36:18 you know, in terms of his first 11 when everybody's fit, he thinks they're a match for most in
00:36:26 that division. Obviously, they've got a strong spine, the likes of, you know, Lees and Helic
00:36:30 and Pearson at the back. Obviously, Lees is out at the minute and then, you know, the likes of
00:36:36 Hogg and Danny Ward further forward. It's just boosting it with that sort of bit more quality
00:36:44 in terms of squad depth. You know, one or two of the younger players have stepped up and have
00:36:51 suggested that they'll certainly be hanging around this season with, you know, the substitutions rule.
00:36:57 There'll be a few of them on the bench by the sound of it. I did the game against Middlesbrough and
00:37:03 two of the younger lads scored, you know, Ian Harrott who, you know, worked his socks off when
00:37:10 Huddersfield went down to 10 men after Zahima Headley got sent off early on.
00:37:16 He was, that was an encouraging showing from him and Kyle Huddling as well who I actually thought
00:37:22 would have come on earlier. He scored right at the end. He had a positive end to pre-season.
00:37:28 He scored in the friendly against Eireann Vane. You know, he's got that confidence boost of now
00:37:34 netting his first senior goal for Huddersfield. So, there's some ticks in the box there.
00:37:38 But he'll be, you know, obviously, Warnock's nobody's fool. He'll know they're a little bit
00:37:43 short in terms of forward options, pulling in other midfielders as well. And yeah, they've got
00:37:51 a big game at the weekend against Leicester. Obviously, spoken about Sheffield Wednesday
00:37:56 playing a side who are fresh from relegation and whether it's a good thing, bad thing.
00:38:02 And obviously, Leicester started the season well with a good win over a good Coventry side.
00:38:09 Yeah, I mean, in terms of the work at both ends, you know, the sort of lack of cutting edge at
00:38:15 Plymouth was a familiar tale, unfortunately, for Huddersfield the last couple of years. And that
00:38:21 really has to be the priority for Warnock in the coming weeks. He's obviously aware of it,
00:38:29 you know, as Leon says, he's no fool. He knows what he needs and he knows he's not got masses
00:38:34 of money to work with it. But there is money there, apparently, according to Kevin Nargle,
00:38:41 and they are on the lookout. So it's just important that he gets the right decision.
00:38:48 It might be for them that a loan signing from higher up proves to be the answer and just
00:38:54 provides that quality that isn't available on sort of Championship transfer fees. And then the
00:39:02 challenge is there for Harrods and Huddling to save them some money, frankly, and show that they
00:39:08 can step up and do that. Slightly more discomforting for me was the problems at the other
00:39:15 end because, you know, you've been able to rely on that a bit more from Huddersfield, you know,
00:39:24 particularly once Warnock came in last season. A bit of the defending for the first goal in
00:39:30 particularly was a bit Keystone Cops. In their defence, you know, it did look like he was blowing
00:39:36 an absolute gale. We know that that was an uncharacteristic mistake from Mikhail Helik.
00:39:44 It was good to see Yuton Nakayama come back in that league cup tie and by all accounts,
00:39:51 Tom Leeds isn't far away. So hopefully the defensive aberrations will prove to be a bit
00:39:58 of a one-off but they definitely do need just a bit more quality after Joseph Humbo
00:40:05 left at the end of his loan and a bit more, frankly, just more goals up front.
00:40:13 I talked about Harrods and Huddling. I'm a big fan of Jack Radony as a midfield player but
00:40:20 he needs to improve his finishing. You know, Mr. Goodheader in that, a really good-headed chance
00:40:27 in that Plymouth game. I think he needs to take his game on by adding better finishing to his game
00:40:35 this season. But yeah, I think it's going to be a tough season for Huddersfield, particularly if
00:40:42 they can't get those attacking additions they need. But, you know, they showed last season
00:40:48 what they're capable of in terms of digging in and resilience. And as we say, when you've got
00:40:56 good defensive players with a good goalkeeper behind them and a shrewd match, it's not the
00:41:02 worst starting point to be covering up your deficiencies from, let's put it that way.
00:41:06 I think he's exposed more this one, just quickly on the striker. So he's exposed more by the fact
00:41:13 that it looks by all accounts that there's a good chance that Jordan Rhodes is going to be moving on
00:41:18 before the end of the window. He actually played, I thought he played pretty well against Middlesbury.
00:41:24 He was the only real senior player there. He actually took the captain's armband as well
00:41:29 for the spell after Jonathan Hogg came off. I've never really seen him before, but Rhodes,
00:41:36 he actually dropped into midfield. Obviously, he had the sending off, so Middlesbury had the extra
00:41:42 man. He dropped into midfield to try and help out. It was a really mature performance. But he came off
00:41:48 at later on in the second half and big applause from the main stand and from him to the main stand
00:41:57 when he came off. It made you wonder if this might be the last time he steps out for Huddersfield
00:42:05 in his second spell there. But that will leave them light as much as he didn't really
00:42:14 play lots and lots under Warnock. I think he still got five or six goals and he was the
00:42:20 second or third top scorer. It's another experienced player further forward who
00:42:28 leaves, so they'll need to fill the gap there. Yeah, I mean, they've had a history in the last
00:42:34 couple of years. Players like Jordan Rhodes, Danny Ward, Fraser Campbell before them, they haven't
00:42:40 got enough goals from centre forward, whatever else those players have contributed. And they
00:42:46 haven't had enough from the players around them to compensate for that. They could really do with
00:42:51 a double figures goalscorer. Much as Warnock loves Danny Ward and much as he brings a lot to the team,
00:43:00 they need somebody who can weigh in with that. Whether that be playing instead of Ward or
00:43:05 alongside Ward scoring goals from wide or as a second centre forward, whatever it is,
00:43:10 they just need to find that player who can dig them out of a hole with a goal when they're not
00:43:15 playing so well. And finally in the Championship, Rotherham United fell to a 4-1 defeat when they
00:43:20 paid a visit to Stoke City. Their problems did not end there though as they finished the game
00:43:27 with 10 men after Riberio Diaz had to leave the field following a second bookable offence after
00:43:34 20 minutes before the end. What did you make of the Millers start to the season, Stuart?
00:43:40 Well obviously a dispiriting start really. Not just the scale of the defeat but the nature of
00:43:50 it. You obviously mentioned the red card for Carrefour, also done by a couple of goals in
00:44:01 the first of these extended added time periods we saw. Andre Videgal scored a couple in first
00:44:08 half stoppage time and yeah it was a tough start but Matt Taylor's been realistic all summer long.
00:44:18 I mean there might be some who say he's been a bit too realistic but I think given Rotherham's
00:44:25 fan base I think they understand the situation they're in. I don't think you could criticise
00:44:30 him for that. Stoke have flattered to deceive the last couple of years. They've had a lot of
00:44:37 big budget players and haven't really delivered the goods. They seem to have had a complete
00:44:44 rethink in terms of the squad this season and by all accounts there could be serious prospects. So
00:44:52 it might be that a few months down the line we're looking at that result in a slightly kinder light.
00:45:00 But yeah it was just a bit of a kick in the proverbials for Rotherham to lose so heavily.
00:45:08 It's one game. I think Rotherham know that they'll have to do the bulk of their points gathering
00:45:18 at home and they start against Blackburn who again we expect to be serious prospects this
00:45:24 season. But that's their first home game this weekend and we might find a bit more
00:45:29 about them then. But for every team even for the likes of Port Vale who had a shocker on the
00:45:36 opening weekend it is only one game. If you do learn the lessons from it and move along
00:45:43 it's not the end of the world. But just a reminder that things don't get any easier for Rotherham
00:45:50 just because they managed to stay up last season. Yeah they've been here before haven't they Stuart?
00:45:56 In terms of recruiting at this level it is problematic for Rotherham. They can't compete
00:46:04 with the budget against virtually every other side in the division. I think that factoring as
00:46:11 well with the injury issues there. They've had a few who've been out in pre-season the likes of
00:46:17 Lindsay, Ferguson, Eves. One or two issues as well with Graham Hall and Pelletier as well who
00:46:29 obviously had an injury at the weekend. A lot of other championships squads can cope with the
00:46:38 loss of four or five players but Rotherham is certainly one of them who can't. Obviously he's
00:46:44 active in the market Matt Taylor. He's made no secret about the fact that he wants to bring a
00:46:50 few more in even though he's done a little bit of business. Much publicised have been
00:46:56 obviously announced a public interest in Billy Sharper. That one's gone cold and unlikely.
00:47:05 Certainly need another striking option you think. They're locked as well in
00:47:09 Nogbenny. It's a difficult start to the season for Rotherham but they've been here before and
00:47:18 Stuart's spot on to say that it will be the home form that will hopefully keep them out of trouble.
00:47:25 I think they've got three of the next four at home. They've got Blackburn on Saturday.
00:47:31 You don't write Rotherham off either do you really. It wouldn't surprise you at 1-0 if they
00:47:36 managed to turn over Blackburn and got a result just when a lot of people there's a little bit
00:47:42 of doom and gloom about. You just hope that Rotherham can do that for their sake. You just
00:47:48 do worry a little bit about the squad depth. They had two or three youngsters who just not played
00:47:55 at this level at all and barely any first team experience on the bench at Stoke. They ended up
00:48:02 bringing on Josh Chiodi who scored in midweek in the cup game which is a plus for him. He's back
00:48:11 after a long injury. He got out on loan. You look at their bench and their lights at the minute and
00:48:23 they'll be desperate to do some business before the end of the window. You'd think there'll be
00:48:29 two, three, four players probably. When you look at some of the players who are playing on the
00:48:36 opening weekend, we've already mentioned Ward-Prouse, Dewsbury Hall, Aaron Ramsey, Willy Nonto.
00:48:46 Rotherham are a million miles away from these clubs in terms of budget. They are going to have
00:48:52 to do it the hard way. But as Leon says, you don't write them off because we've seen them do it the
00:48:56 hard way before. Part of that has been when they've had bad days like they had at Stoke. Let's be
00:49:04 honest, they've had quite a few over the years. They don't just crumble and feel sorry for
00:49:09 themselves. They're all the sleeves up and fight. I expect Rotherham to be in a fight and to make a
00:49:17 fight of it this season. We just keep our fingers crossed that they'll come out the right side of it.
00:49:22 [Luke Armstrong] Next, our attention turns to League 2, where Harrogate Town got their season
00:49:27 off to a good start when they were able to overcome Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers,
00:49:31 thanks to a Jack Muldoon penalty in the second half. What did you make of the performances
00:49:38 from both sides? Has there been any update regarding Luke Armstrong's future as we've
00:49:44 seen that it's been tossed up in the air, Leon?
00:49:47 [Leon] Yeah, I was there on Saturday and beforehand you thought it was all set up for a
00:49:54 Doncaster win. Grant McCann's first match in charge of his second coming at Rovers,
00:50:03 there's been a hell of a lot of publicity since he came back. A bit of the feel-good
00:50:09 factors returned. John Ryan as well, the former chairman, he was making his first return to the
00:50:15 club after not far off 10 years, funnily enough since he stepped down as chairman. So there was
00:50:23 a lot of exuberance and positivity and such is football that the Harrogate side who lost their
00:50:30 star striker who made himself unavailable selection, looked a little bit, you know,
00:50:37 a lamb to the slaughter, proceeded to return in an excellent performance and thoroughly deserved
00:50:41 the victory. That's football at the end of the day, I suppose. That's what makes it so appealing.
00:50:47 But yeah, it was disappointing for Doncaster. They couldn't really, truly get going. They were
00:50:54 second best in the first half. I thought Harrogate's game plan was excellent. They
00:51:00 obviously started Muldoon, started up top in place of Luke Armstrong, did a decent enough job and
00:51:08 obviously scored the penalty. The two lads behind him, Adoah and Sam Florey, they get Rovers a lot
00:51:16 of problems and it was a really good game plan and testament to the group that Simon Weaver had got.
00:51:22 Obviously big disruption with the news about Armstrong. I think he got 16 or 17, didn't he,
00:51:28 last year. So he's been a big player for Harrogate. But they did feel sorry for themselves and
00:51:33 a good game plan. Played some excellent football. Anthony O'Connor was a rock at the back. One or
00:51:40 two of them was not too far behind. The two lads in midfield I thought were excellent as well.
00:51:46 The two new signings, Dean Cornelius, was great. He controlled the game for decent parts. And
00:51:54 Liam Gibson as well. They looked a good two in there and they've obviously backed it up with
00:51:59 a good win against Carlisle in the cup. So what Weaver said after the game regarding Armstrong
00:52:08 made perfect sense. He said, "Look, we don't want to lose him if he wants to return to the fold."
00:52:12 The door's open but he said that for the player that had been turned down,
00:52:21 he's open to the prospect of him leaving if the valuation is met. But also stipulated that
00:52:26 they'll have to line up his replacement first. He's obviously a huge player for Harrogate in a
00:52:34 very important position of the pitch. If they get an offer that meets the valuation and they can
00:52:40 manage to line up his replacement first, then I think he probably will go. From Doncaster's
00:52:47 perspective, it was a difficult first day of the office. There was one or two sort of
00:52:54 crumbs of consolation. A little bit of controversy regarding the penalty.
00:53:01 I thought Grant McCann wasn't particularly happy with that. I thought he had more of a case in
00:53:07 suggesting that Rovers should have had a penalty earlier on in the half when Tommy Rowe went down.
00:53:14 Mark Oxley came out and definitely caught him. The play continued and John Taylor had a shot
00:53:20 that was cleared off the line. That looked like a definite penalty for me. So they were
00:53:25 unfortunate in that regard but there was nothing fortunate about Harrogate's victory. They were
00:53:32 excellent in particular in the first half. I think the crumbs of consolation for Rovers were the
00:53:39 substitutions that came on. Obviously Stewart did the match at Hull. One or two came to the fore
00:53:49 there. The wingers, Tyler Roberts, looked a real bottle of pop and caused Harrogate some late
00:53:56 problems. Satona as well, he looked quite lively. I think the good thing with Doncaster is that
00:54:03 even though it was a disappointing result, they have got decent options to come off the bench.
00:54:09 There's no time for alarm and to be fair to Doncaster, they
00:54:17 obviously reacted in the best possible way with an excellent result in midweek.
00:54:22 We've talked about Hull learning the lesson today in the first week. Doncaster Rovers' squad,
00:54:30 I am certain, will have learnt a lot about Grant McCann's standards in training on Sunday and
00:54:35 Monday after that defeat. As Leon says, I think there were nine changes on Tuesday but nevertheless
00:54:42 he got a reaction from his players and that will be encouraging. We know from his time at Hull and
00:54:50 elsewhere that he's not a manager who stands for any nonsense. He doesn't like losing, doesn't
00:54:57 like sloppy standards and all this sort of thing. If anyone in that Rovers squad was in any doubt
00:55:02 about it before Saturday's game, I'm pretty sure that they're not now. It was interesting on
00:55:08 Tuesday speaking to a couple of members of the Doncaster press pack and asked them about
00:55:14 Harrogate. They were very positive about Harrogate as a whole and particularly about the players
00:55:21 they've recruited. Dean Cornelius' name was one that cropped up and that gives you a bit of
00:55:29 encouragement. A bit like I was saying about Daniel Farke, if they do lose Luke Armstrong
00:55:34 and it does feel like it's going that way, that they can recruit somebody good to fill the gap.
00:55:41 If you look at Harrogate's last couple of seasons, Armstrong's been a very hot and cold striker but
00:55:50 in terms of his goalscoring output, Harrogate's results have tended to reflect whether he's hot
00:55:56 or cold. He is very important to them and replacing him right will be important. But
00:56:02 as I say, what I've heard about the signings they brought in this summer is anything to go by. That
00:56:08 gives you encouragement that they can find the right man. If you're going to have those sort of
00:56:15 little blips, there's a case for having him earlier rather than later isn't there? It's
00:56:20 disappointing as it was. Like Stuart correctly says, one or two other players will certainly
00:56:28 know what Grant McCann is all about now. He basically gave the players the benefit of the
00:56:36 doubt. They weren't good in the first half but he could have made one or two changes but he
00:56:42 kept with them. In future games, if there's a period of play he doesn't like what he's seeing,
00:56:50 I think he'll be quite proactive in his changes. At the minute, he's got the squad to do that.
00:56:55 Finally for this week, we turn to League One and what was easily the result of the weekend
00:57:00 when Barnsley gave Port Vale an impressive 7-0 thumping. The game saw Devante Cole score his
00:57:06 first ever EFL hat-trick and it also saw a debut goal from Andy Dallas after he came on in the 75th
00:57:14 minute. What did you make of the fantastic performance seeing as it was the Tikes' first
00:57:19 game since the departure of Michael Duff Stewart? We've talked ad nauseum about the teams on this
00:57:25 podcast, about late managerial changes, about not having the squad fully in place, not having had
00:57:33 time to bed in, making lots of changes. You can add in with Barnsley the hangover or potential
00:57:39 hangover after losing the playoff final. The full bingo card of excuses was there for Barnsley and
00:57:46 they didn't use any of them. Really, really impressive to see them knuckle down like that
00:57:52 and obviously led by Devante Cole who had a really good season last season after a career
00:58:03 which to that point you felt hadn't really fulfilled its potential. Really good to see him
00:58:10 back up the way he ended last season with the way he started this and it can only give him confidence
00:58:18 that they've got a new manager in Neil Collins who knows what he's doing and that they can put
00:58:24 last season's disappointment behind and kick on. It was really, really encouraging. Really good to
00:58:30 see. I think Stewart's spot on there. In some respects it was set up for a Barnsley defeat in
00:58:41 many regards. You look at what happened at the end of the week as well. James Norwood who was
00:58:45 a big player on the pitch and a big player in the dressing room. He's a shock to the eve of
00:58:52 season transfer. To all of them, a lot of the supporters weren't particularly happy about that
00:59:00 and it's usually the last thing you need on the eve of the season. He's a big player leaving and
00:59:09 obviously Luka Connell as well. He was ill and wasn't involved on Saturday. You factor in as
00:59:17 well, obviously they've lost Mads Andersen and Bobby Thomas. It was set up like the fears I had
00:59:26 before the game thinking about it. Paul Vale might go there and do a job on them and maybe
00:59:34 nick a 1-0 but Barnsley ran right. Remarkable opening day. I saw a bit of Barnsley last season
00:59:44 and he really got a tune out of him, Michael Duff. Not just in terms of goals, I think he got
00:59:50 16 or 17 but in terms of his all-round play, leading the line, really showing authority as
01:00:00 a senior player. He was a right handful, wasn't he, in a lot of games last season. Great for him
01:00:07 and great for Neil Collins that he started the season so well. With Norwood going out, he's very
01:00:15 much the senior man up top. I know that Max Wattis has come in but Cole's 27, 28, he's in his prime.
01:00:27 He's a season top professional and Barnsley are going to need him this season so he must
01:00:33 have confidence cursing through his veins after that. I think the contributions elsewhere,
01:00:39 you've got to mention them. Herbie Kane, Callum Stiles as well, ongoing speculation about his
01:00:49 future. Stuff on the grey bar, is he happy, is he unsettled, will he be wanting to pick up a stink
01:00:57 and leave. By the sound of it, he's kept his head down and he's been professional. I still think
01:01:05 there's a good chance that he'll leave before the end of the window, potentially on loan. He
01:01:10 obviously went to Millwall last year. He's made no secret about the fact that he wants to be
01:01:16 playing in the Championship. He's obviously got international considerations with Hungary as well.
01:01:22 Collins has been pleased with his attitude and his approach. John Russell as well, who you hope
01:01:30 will be a big player for Barnsley. He'll manage to get a goal and one or two of the debutants as
01:01:36 well, Kasper Lapparta. He'll be hoping to step into the breach as a slot there for someone
01:01:44 defensively. He had a good game by all accounts. Really uplifting, perhaps a little unexpected,
01:01:52 certainly in terms of the margin of victory for Barnsley. I sense it's something that
01:01:59 everybody needed there and hopefully it'll settle them down and they can start the season well.
