Transcript
00:00 The air is thick with smoke around us after three boats caught fire this morning here
00:07 at Homeport Marina in Church Point on Sydney's northern beaches.
00:11 The boats behind me are still charred and burnt and firefighters are still hosing down
00:17 the wreckage.
00:18 Firefighters were called here around 5am to reports of these three vessels on fire and
00:23 when they arrived they found that one of the boats was adrift and water police had to tow
00:27 the boat back to shore.
00:29 Now firefighters say that this could have been a lot worse and they have contained the
00:33 situation so the fire doesn't spread to nearby boats but they say it's still a volatile situation
00:40 because of the dangers of petrol and diesel leaking from these boats into the water.
00:45 When our crews arrived there was actually three boats on fire.
00:48 One of them had burned away its mooring lines and it was drifting into the bay here.
00:52 Water police had pushed that up onto the shoreline.
00:55 Firefighters went down the wharf here, the gangplank I suppose, and started attacking
01:00 the fire.
01:01 They were able to cut that fire off.
01:02 There was two boats on fire in that area at that time threatening all these adjoining
01:07 boats.
01:08 So a good save, even though we've lost three boats here, arguably we've saved 20.
01:13 The hazardous materials response team has been called in to assist as well as water
01:18 police and the rural fire service who are also on the scene.
01:22 Now police and firefighters will be investigating exactly how this fire started and how these
01:28 boats ignited.
