00:00 The Philippines denied that it had promised China that it would remove the BRP Sierra Madre from Ayungin Shoal
00:08 following China's decision to make it a water bomb and to prevent the Philippines from resupplying.
00:16 Marise Umali has a report.
00:18 In 1999, the Philippines launched the BRP Sierra Madre,
00:25 which serves as the military outpost of the Philippines in Ayungin Shoal.
00:29 It was the reason why China illegally surrendered the island to the Philippines in 1995.
00:35 But for the Foreign Ministry of China,
00:37 it was illegal for the ship to remain in the Rene Reef, which is called China in Ayungin Shoal.
00:42 That's why the water bomb and the blockade of the Philippine ships this Saturday
00:47 was only necessary to stop the illegal shipment of construction materials to repair the BRP Sierra Madre.
00:55 The Philippines has also promised to remove the old ship, which was a surprise to the National Security Council.
01:02 It's like a figment of their imagination.
01:05 They're the only ones who know.
01:07 We will never enter into agreement that will lead to the abandonment of our sovereign rights and jurisdiction over Ayungin Shoal.
01:18 Professor J. Batong-Bacal said that China is keeping the BRP Sierra Madre closed
01:23 because they're waiting for it to be completely destroyed.
01:26 The structure might collapse because of the earthquake.
01:30 China is probably waiting for that.
01:33 If they rescue it, we won't be able to return.
01:36 In the midst of the new tensions in the West Philippine Sea,
01:40 Senate President Ming Zubiri called for the Chinese companies
01:44 that are doing government projects in the country to be blacklisted.
01:47 I will mention that to all agencies that have infrastructure projects and programs
01:52 that we can use in other countries.
01:56 The Philippines should also start boycotting products from China,
02:01 like what other countries have done in the region.
02:03 But it's not easy, according to a former member of the Cabinet and economist.
02:08 If it's just us, I don't think it will have an effect.
02:10 It will work if there are other countries that will join us, like the U.S.
02:15 According to the GMI Integrated News Research,
02:18 China was the largest trading partner of the Philippines last year.
02:22 China also has the largest number of imported goods that entered the Philippines,
02:26 reaching 28 billion U.S. dollars in 2022.
02:30 Maris Umali reporting for GMI Integrated News.
