00:01:58 will go head to head playing a

00:02:06 contestants to move on to the

00:02:32 most popular choice. And
00:02:34 contestant number three will

00:02:40 numbers, they will then have to

00:02:47 But have no fear, ladies and

00:23:19 But I'm very excited to see what you play moving forward.
00:23:22 Yeah?
00:23:23 - Kelly, when you look and I'll speak very quickly,
00:23:26 I understand what Duvon and Gerald were saying.
00:23:28 When you look at a storm,
00:23:29 there's this eye in the center, calm.
00:23:33 But everything around it, it blows and batters.
00:23:37 And there's that part in the song
00:23:40 where I would have been waiting
00:23:42 to be blown off my seat as well.
00:23:44 I got good music.
00:23:45 - I'm like you're looking for the wow factor.
00:23:47 - Yeah, I got the good music,
00:23:48 but I felt like I just wanted more
00:23:50 even coming into the end.
00:23:52 So I would have been cheering you on
00:23:54 and I'm glad to see you were going,
00:23:56 but I just wanted that little climactic part in it.
00:23:59 But other than that, congratulations
00:24:01 and best of luck moving forward.
00:24:04 We still have more to hear.
00:24:05 Thank you.
00:24:06 - Thanks, Kelly.
00:24:07 - Thank you, Miss.
00:24:08 (whooshing)
00:24:09 - And can our fourth finalist bring the heat?
00:24:12 Shaquille Forbes, let's see.
00:24:14 - Hi, my name is Shaquille Forbes
00:24:15 and what got me into porn today is my deceased grandfather.
00:24:19 He used to run like a small steel band
00:24:21 and I would always hear stories
00:24:24 that I'd be running around playing
00:24:26 and then I pick up a stick and start editing notes
00:24:29 and that was the spark that got me here today.
00:24:31 My first time playing was my preschool graduation.
00:24:36 My first song was "How Great Thou Art."
00:24:40 (upbeat music)
00:24:42 (upbeat music)
00:24:45 (upbeat music)
00:24:47 (upbeat music)
00:24:50 (upbeat music)
00:24:53 (upbeat music)
00:24:55 (upbeat music)
00:24:58 (upbeat music)
00:25:00 (upbeat music)
00:25:03 (upbeat music)
00:25:06 (upbeat music)
00:25:08 (upbeat music)
00:25:11 (upbeat music)
00:25:13 (upbeat music)
00:25:16 (upbeat music)
00:25:19 (upbeat music)
00:25:21 (upbeat music)
00:25:26 (upbeat music)
00:25:30 (upbeat music)
00:25:34 (upbeat music)
00:25:38 (upbeat music)
00:25:42 (upbeat music)
00:25:47 (upbeat music)
00:25:50 (upbeat music)
00:25:54 (upbeat music)
00:25:58 (upbeat music)
00:26:02 (upbeat music)
00:26:06 (upbeat music)
00:26:10 (upbeat music)
00:26:16 (upbeat music)
00:26:18 (upbeat music)
00:26:23 (upbeat music)
00:26:27 (upbeat music)
00:26:31 (upbeat music)
00:26:35 (upbeat music)
00:26:39 (upbeat music)
00:26:44 (upbeat music)
00:26:47 (upbeat music)
00:26:52 (upbeat music)
00:26:56 (upbeat music)
00:27:00 (upbeat music)
00:27:04 (upbeat music)
00:27:08 (upbeat music)
00:27:13 (upbeat music)
00:27:16 (upbeat music)
00:27:20 (upbeat music)
00:27:24 (upbeat music)
00:27:28 (upbeat music)
00:27:32 (upbeat music)
00:27:36 - I wanna start.
00:27:37 I wanna start.
00:27:38 I wanna start.
00:27:38 I wanna start.
00:27:39 Shaquille.
00:27:40 (audience laughing)
00:27:43 Feel the love.
00:27:44 It was so expressive in the performance.
00:27:49 I don't know if it was done purposely.
00:27:52 The aggression that you start off with,
00:27:56 I was like, "Is he going to continue like this,
00:27:58 "being so aggressive all the time?"
00:27:59 And there was a point when he was starting to be,
00:28:03 get it into the improvisation.
00:28:04 You took like 10 steps back and you start getting mellow.
00:28:08 - Yes.
00:28:09 - And I was like, "Okay, I'm starting to feel the love now."
00:28:12 And it was so intimate with you, the instrument.
00:28:16 It's like painting a picture
00:28:19 and expressing that image for a blind person to see
00:28:24 and a deaf person to hear.
00:28:27 It was well, well thought out.
00:28:32 The presentation, the visual, the showmanship
00:28:39 is like the marriage between you and that love.
00:28:43 Congrats, bro.
00:28:44 - We get impressions. - Congrats.
00:28:46 Nice man.
00:28:46 - I didn't know he just do poetry.
00:28:48 (all laughing)
00:28:49 - What I would say, I mean, it was scary.
00:28:51 You take risks because when you started off at that tempo,
00:28:54 I said, "Jesus Christ, would I be able to feel it?"
00:28:58 And then there was a part where you cut,
00:29:00 "Oh, yeah, play."
00:29:02 And I said, "He's wasting time with that tempo."
00:29:04 And then it just get down to the point.
00:29:06 I was like, "Oh, shoot."
00:29:08 - Yeah, that man delirious.
00:29:10 - You hit it.
00:29:11 You have me on edge, but yet,
00:29:13 (speaking in foreign language)
00:29:16 - Yeah. - Yeah.
00:29:17 - So I appreciate me surviving till another day.
00:29:20 - Yeah, 'cause I too was thinking,
00:29:21 "He not gonna get into it.
00:29:22 "He not gonna get into it."
00:29:23 And then he went and it was perfect.
00:29:25 It was really nice. - So thank you
00:29:26 for not letting me jump over.
00:29:27 I really appreciate that.
00:29:29 And so good luck moving into the next round.
00:29:33 I hope to see you there.
00:29:34 Thank you.
00:29:35 - Yeah, no, that was great.
00:29:36 The way that you put together a story,
00:29:38 it was beautiful.
00:29:39 It really was beautiful.
00:29:40 What also shows is that you've been playing for a while,
00:29:43 'cause you seem to have a real good relationship
00:29:45 with the instrument.
00:29:45 So like for vocalists,
00:29:46 the instrument is built in with them.
00:29:48 Pianists are different.
00:29:49 They have to stay playing the instrument
00:29:51 to form a union between them and the instrument.
00:29:54 I definitely think you have that.
00:29:56 You and your instrument is one.
00:29:57 And now you're able to tell a story how you want to
00:30:00 and it works.
00:30:01 It really does work.
00:30:02 I felt like I heard a bit of who you are
00:30:04 in your composition.
00:30:06 So that was great.
00:30:07 - Smile now, smile now.
00:30:09 Come on.
00:30:10 (laughing)
00:30:11 - That was great.
00:30:12 - Well done, well done.
00:30:13 - Good luck.
00:30:14 - Thank you.
00:30:15 - Now we're on to our final contestant.
00:30:17 Ladies and gentlemen,
00:30:19 this is Emmanuel Joseph.
00:30:22 - Hi, my name is Emmanuel Joseph
00:30:25 and I have the best pan.
00:30:27 How I got into playing pan?
00:30:29 So in my primary school, Malawa RSC,
00:30:32 at the age of nine in standard three,
00:30:34 they had these extracurricular activities
00:30:36 and pan was one of them.
00:30:37 And I just signed up and the rest is history.
00:30:40 My first experiences with pan came with primary school,
00:30:43 but pan has been in my family
00:30:45 from since my maternal grandfather, Mr. Cyril Stoutman.
00:30:49 He was the captain of the Casablanca Steel Orchestra
00:30:52 back in the Bajan Leagues,
00:30:53 when I started playing in primary school Malawa RSC.
00:30:56 (upbeat music)
00:31:02 (laughing)
00:31:03 (upbeat music)
00:31:08 (upbeat music)
00:31:13 (upbeat music)
00:31:18 (upbeat music)
00:31:23 (upbeat music)
00:31:28 (upbeat music)
00:31:33 (upbeat music)
00:31:38 (upbeat music)
00:31:43 (upbeat music)
00:31:48 (upbeat music)
00:31:53 (upbeat music)
00:31:58 (upbeat music)
00:32:03 (upbeat music)
00:32:08 (upbeat music)
00:32:13 (upbeat music)
00:32:18 (upbeat music)
00:32:23 (upbeat music)
00:32:28 (upbeat music)
00:32:33 (upbeat music)
00:32:38 (upbeat music)
00:32:43 (upbeat music)
00:32:48 (upbeat music)
00:32:53 (upbeat music)
00:32:58 (upbeat music)
00:33:03 (upbeat music)
00:33:08 (upbeat music)
00:33:13 (upbeat music)
00:33:18 (upbeat music)
00:33:23 (upbeat music)
00:33:28 (upbeat music)
00:33:33 (upbeat music)
00:33:38 (upbeat music)
00:33:43 (upbeat music)
00:33:48 (upbeat music)
00:33:53 (upbeat music)
00:33:58 - Wow.
00:34:00 - Very good to play with computer.
00:34:02 (laughing)
00:34:04 - Wow.
00:34:05 - I eat a lot of food and it ain't easy.
00:34:08 (laughing)
00:34:12 - I like it, I see it and I like it.
00:34:14 (laughing)
00:34:17 Marcus, you go first.
00:34:19 - You go first, Marcus.
00:34:21 - Emmanuel, so first let me just say a very good job.
00:34:26 Very, very good job.
00:34:29 I thoroughly enjoyed that.
00:34:31 I would just hope that for the next round,
00:34:34 once you make it through, because we have five,
00:34:37 we need to have three.
00:34:39 Continue in terms of your performance,
00:34:41 make sure and communicate with us, the audience.
00:34:45 I want you to continue your techniques.
00:34:48 Jarell would have mentioned that earlier with another person.
00:34:51 Even in your performance,
00:34:53 you need to make sure and keep everything going.
00:34:55 So yeah, Jarell.
00:34:57 - It's wilder leaving me for last now.
00:34:59 - To quote, to quote.
00:35:00 - Me too.
00:35:01 - To quote, to quote the late Edwin Puschett,
00:35:03 people do come out to Panorama and to live pan events
00:35:07 to listen to Pan.
00:35:08 They could do that if you listen to the radio.
00:35:10 When we come to see Pan, we want to see her performance.
00:35:13 And so far for me,
00:35:15 I definitely love the way you performed entirely
00:35:19 and not to get lost or we did not lose the song, right?
00:35:25 So that relationship worked really well for me.
00:35:28 I appreciate that.
00:35:29 And the fact that it felt like you actually enjoyed
00:35:32 the performance and that is crucial.
00:35:35 I am saying that also to say that moving forward,
00:35:38 if you do move forward,
00:35:40 I don't want to come back and see the same gimmicky jumper
00:35:42 behind the pan as you play kind of thing.
00:35:45 - Mr. Emmanuel, how are you doing, man?
00:35:46 You good?
00:35:47 - Everything good?
00:35:48 - I'm good, I'm good.
00:35:49 You good?
00:35:50 - I'm hoping to be better.
00:35:51 - Okay, cool.
00:35:52 All right.
00:35:53 From a musician standpoint,
00:35:57 it's a very challenging song in terms of the genre
00:36:01 that you have selected to perform for us here tonight.
00:36:04 I personally believe that some more attention
00:36:12 could be paid in terms of the way how you approach
00:36:15 songs of that genre.
00:36:18 In terms of the Latin, the Spanish flavor,
00:36:23 I was missing the syncopations like the Latin feel
00:36:27 or the Central American, Cuban feel,
00:36:31 how they approach things in terms of giving the creative
00:36:37 thought some breathing space.
00:36:39 - In other words, you wanted more spice.
00:36:41 - I want some more spice.
00:36:42 - Because it's Latin.
00:36:43 - I want some more sexiness.
00:36:45 You know the Spanish girls, they're just like,
00:36:47 "Look, you know?"
00:36:49 - Next round's coming up with two girls in front dancing.
00:36:51 - Other than that, man, jump well done.
00:36:53 - I'm tight, shut and dressed.
00:36:56 [electronic music]
00:36:59 [indistinct chatter]
00:37:02 [electronic music]
00:37:24 [upbeat music]
00:37:27 - Right?
00:37:36 So it's just a little mini glass one.
00:37:38 - Mini glass one.
00:37:39 - And who are you saying?
00:37:40 - No, well, we are going to start on number one.
00:37:44 - Okay.
00:37:45 - The bochera, I can take it and pick it up.
00:37:48 And we have a lot of cultural say on that.
00:37:51 Siobhan, I have been completely blown away
00:37:55 by each performer here tonight,
00:37:57 and it clearly shows why they were selected
00:38:00 to be here to represent themselves at the Best Pan.
00:38:04 - Listen, folks, goose bumps, you know?
00:38:07 - No, they're real good, really and truly,
00:38:10 and I'm being sincere with the sentiment
00:38:12 that I am happy that I don't have to be the one
00:38:14 to choose who goes forward to round two.
00:38:17 That, ladies and gentlemen, is up to our judges.
00:38:20 And we'll now take it to them.
00:38:22 Good luck with that.
00:38:24 [laughter]
00:38:26 - Being in the entertainment department
00:38:29 for more than three decades,
00:38:31 I now see how it is to be in a platform
00:38:34 to be able to deliberate amongst five great aspiring youths,
00:38:40 individuals behind this great national instrument,
00:38:43 and to whosoever is in charge of this great initiative,
00:38:47 I'm going to congratulate them
00:38:48 for providing this platform
00:38:50 that the national instrument could be at the forefront.
00:38:55 But there's five of you there.
00:38:58 Two have to go.
00:38:59 One of my picks going forward to round two,
00:39:05 Tysha Alexander.
00:39:08 [applause]
00:39:13 - Yay!
00:39:14 All right, so moving forward as a storyteller,
00:39:17 and loving when our stories are told
00:39:22 in the best and simplest ways that you can feel,
00:39:26 I'm giving the second position moving forward
00:39:31 to Shaquille Forbes.
00:39:34 [applause]
00:39:37 - And as you know, I always thought
00:39:39 that my job in Pantramego was the hardest job I ever had.
00:39:42 [laughter]
00:39:43 But we always get either team up, too.
00:39:45 [laughter]
00:39:47 So I guess I'll have to be the one
00:39:49 to make that final pick by the judges.
00:39:53 And that final person moving forward is
00:39:57 Mr. Emmanuel Joseph.
00:40:03 Congratulations.
00:40:05 [applause]
00:40:07 - Jamel, listen to me.
00:40:09 It was hard.
00:40:10 I can't even lie.
00:40:12 We were a show of two,
00:40:15 and you were the one that we wasn't sure
00:40:17 whether to put in, put in, put in.
00:40:19 It was that kind of back and forth.
00:40:21 I am going to stalk your social media,
00:40:24 just so you know,
00:40:25 because I really do like your playing.
00:40:29 I understand that you're very young,
00:40:32 so I am excited to see what you're going to do
00:40:36 with this instrument and with your career.
00:40:38 I'm very excited.
00:40:39 I'm not joking when I say I'm going to be stalking his stuff.
00:40:41 Like, definitely.
00:40:43 Kelly, I think, I wish I had a different song.
00:40:47 You know what it's like?
00:40:48 It's like when vocalists enter talent show competitions
00:40:52 and you use a Whitney Houston to audition with.
00:40:55 You don't do that.
00:40:57 You understand what I mean?
00:40:59 Because the expectation is so high
00:41:01 that we don't get to really see you and appreciate you.
00:41:04 The choice of song is crucial to competition.
00:41:07 I think that is where, you know.
00:41:11 So I will also be looking forward to see a song
00:41:14 that suits you that we can really get to see and hear
00:41:19 your musicianship and what you have to offer.
00:41:22 Does that make sense?
00:41:23 Yes.
00:41:24 But both of you are exceptional musicians, though.
00:41:26 There's no argument about that.
00:41:28 [applause]
00:41:30 I was pleased to an extent,
00:41:32 but I know that my showmanship with my performance
00:41:36 needed a little more improvement
00:41:39 and also the musical aspect of my performance.
00:41:43 I know that I could have done a lot better,
00:41:46 and I agree with what the judges had to say.
00:41:50 I didn't feel confident about my performance
00:41:54 because after being there, I realized I used the wrong song
00:41:58 to showcase my talent.
00:42:01 The judges, what the judges said, I think was correct, yeah,
00:42:04 because you can backstage the same thing.
00:42:07 What they said, I used the wrong song to showcase my talent, yeah.
00:42:11 So, I guess that's what it is.
00:42:15 So, folks, the judges have spoken.
00:42:19 They made the tough, tough decision.
00:42:21 They did.
00:42:22 Taisha, Shaquille, and Emmanuel,
00:42:25 you will be advancing to the next round.
00:42:28 Congratulations. It's round two now.
00:42:30 So you know what, Penny?
00:42:31 What is it?
00:42:32 It is time for them to pick their songs from the magic of...
00:42:37 My fedora.
00:42:39 Penny's fedora.
00:42:40 Could you please pick a number, sir? Anyone, pick one.
00:42:42 Come on, Mr Forbes.
00:42:43 Let's see if you have a lucky hand, sir. Pick one.
00:42:46 Drum roll.
00:42:48 All right, Mr Forbes, today...
00:42:50 Oh, you're bigger too.
00:42:53 We are coming around.
00:42:54 Miss Taisha.
00:42:55 We are coming around.
00:42:57 A big sigh, but she picked her number quickly.
00:43:00 I don't know. It's up to you.
00:43:02 And let's start across here. Since you picked first,
00:43:05 what number did you pull?
00:43:07 Number three, Terry Lyons' Calypso.
00:43:12 Number one.
00:43:14 Number one, Swappy, God is a Trini.
00:43:18 And number two, Olatunji, Don't Stop the Carnival.
00:43:22 All right, pull up the papers. Pull it. Pull it really quickly.
00:43:24 Really quickly.
00:43:25 Because now they have to choose once again which order they will be performing in.
00:43:31 This is part two. So let me give this a little shake.
00:43:34 Let me give this a little shake, a little stir.
00:43:36 So when you take your number, do not reveal what you got just yet, right?
00:43:40 You just take a mentality number.
00:43:43 Are you guys ready? I'm going in the opposite. I'm going this way now.
00:43:47 There we go.
00:43:50 Don't reveal your number. You just hold it. That's your number.
00:43:52 Don't reveal it just yet.
00:43:56 And there we have it.
00:43:58 They have selected their numbers.
00:44:00 All right. Are we ready for Santa?
00:44:02 I've seen a couple of heads shaking. Some look quite nervous.
00:44:04 Santa is quivering.
00:44:05 I'm not sure what's going on. I'll put back on my fedora for now so I can focus.
00:44:09 Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready?
00:44:12 Remember we mentioned that there is a surprise in store for you all.
00:44:15 You remember when I said that earlier, right?
00:44:17 So who had number one?
00:44:19 Will you please step forward?
00:44:21 Could you please step forward?
00:44:23 Mr. Forbes.
00:44:25 Shaquille Forbes. Thank you very much.
00:44:27 And who chose number two?
00:44:30 Ah, Emmanuel. Come to the front for us, please.
00:44:33 And Tyesha, you chose three in your order of performance.
00:44:38 Correct?
00:44:39 All right.
00:44:40 So are you ready for your surprises now?
00:44:43 Not really? What do you mean not really? You're supposed to be excited.
00:44:46 This is the best part. Anything that comes in is supposed to be ready and excited to take it on.
00:44:50 That's right.
00:44:51 All right. So in the first draw, who chose Swappy?
00:44:55 Tyesha, you chose Swappy.
00:44:58 So you're surprised. Do you think we should tell her now?
00:45:02 I think we should just surprise all of them.
00:45:04 All of them?
00:45:05 At the same time, we're thinking.
00:45:07 Let's do it all at the same time.
00:45:09 So introducing to the best part, to help you all with round two,
00:45:15 the artist that corresponds with your choices is going to help you put together your round two performance.
00:45:22 So please join me as I welcome Terry Lyons, Ola Tunji and Swappy.
00:45:29 There we go.
00:45:31 What's up, my guy?
00:45:33 And they are ready. So these are the contestants that you will be supporting in their round two performance.
00:45:39 And you'll have exactly one hour to help them get ready for round two, because one person has to go.
00:45:49 One person's got to go. Somebody's going to be eliminated.
00:45:53 So I wish you guys all the best.
00:45:55 So would you go with your corresponding coaches and see you guys in an hour?

00:50:05 >> We are back just like that with our three finalists moving on to round two.
00:50:09 >> Correct.
00:50:11 >> What was that vibe for you seeing our contestants working with these guest stars?
00:50:15 >> I would honestly say that I think it would be a privilege to them to have the opportunity to spend that time with artists of such caliber.
00:50:25 >> Yeah, so we had Swappy, we had Terry Lyons, we had Ola Tunji.
00:50:29 >> And for them to give their time to something like this, I'm sure that would be a moment that they will never forget.
00:50:35 >> Never forget.
00:50:36 >> So I hope that that time they spent with their artists give them the strength and the courage and everything that they need to come and shine because one person has to go, one person got to go, I'm telling you.
00:50:48 >> That's just how it is. So for now, I think it's time for us to welcome our first contestant of round number two, Mr. Shaquille Forbes.
00:50:58 >> Shaquille Forbes.
00:50:59 >> For me to win this competition, it means a lot because this is my first competition, my first time competing, so one shot and one win, that would be really nice.

00:54:29 >> Jarell, your ancestors talking to you.
00:54:35 >> I think you're really getting to understand what it means to be a panist and what it means to be a musician. When you first start, you would have had time to prepare yourself. Now we get to see artists, all right, this is a song, take some time, come back. And you get a different sense of what a musician is capable of doing.
00:54:51 I absolutely appreciate the fact, Shaquille, that you took the time in those few minutes to prepare this performance to acknowledge the roots of the song itself. Because you could have just run in and do solos, play melodies, and then just do runs up and down the chromatic, down the place.
00:55:09 But you did take some time to be like, no, let me go back a little bit to the roots of what the song is, the intention of it is, just the production of it, the Baptist influence on it, especially as it relates to Calypso. I absolutely acknowledge that work that you put into the arrangement that you just gave.
00:55:27 I would say, though, I feel like it was holding you back a little bit. Yeah? I feel like if you had more time, you would have been able to go in more on it. But I absolutely appreciate the research that you did in the short space of time and to incorporate it into the arrangement. That was great. Thank you.
00:55:45 When you look back, Jarell, at the first performance he did, "Can You Feel the Love," and the tempo that that went at, it was a hundred meter dash that he really held on to. And to see a totally different mood that contrasted that to me, I respect that. And as you said, Ogun would be happy on that.
00:56:08 It shows your real musicality.
00:56:15 Well, I like to be straight and real to the point. I found out that there was a discrepancy in terms of preparing music to bring for me as a judge and to react spontaneously when something has been given to you. The confidence approach to this song, for me, I find it could have been more, convinced me more.
00:56:40 If you look at the artist, the singer who sang the song, imagine the energy, the influence that she has behind the song. Imagine the spirituality with the music itself. It has a level of high intensity.
00:56:59 It has a rhythmic pulse that you could inject and portray with the instrument. And all these elements can be used within the time frame that you had to explain yourself and express yourself. But at the end of it, we are still in a learning process.
00:57:17 And this is what we are here for, to guide and to give you the little guidance and the little going forward, what you need to do to bring up where spontaneous pain is about. It's all about creativity. And that is what we need to see in the performance. The lines, the vocabulary, the language, the aura, the presentation, the performance, everything is a package.
00:57:42 So anytime you bring something to the table to eat, you eat it raw. Cook the thing. Cook it. Put some bun in it. But at the end of it, job well done, King. Job well done. Job well done. Thank you, Shaquille.
00:57:57 Guys, being able to meet and speak and interact with the great Ola Tunji, I mean, that by itself was a great experience. But this performance, picking out the heart, seeing what song I had to do and try and learn quick, quick and everything. That was a little bit different. But as musicians, we have to be able to do that.
