00:25 above 35 degrees Celsius for long hours.
00:32 And Nidia remains under threat of military intervention, following a warning from the
00:37 Director of the Economic Community of West African States.
00:46 From the headquarters of TELUS with English in Havana, Cuba, this is From the South.
00:51 I'm Yoren Corglades Quesada and these are the news.
00:55 On early Monday morning, Dominican Republic's authorities report the death of 13 Haitian
01:00 asylum seekers in Valverde province, with two minors among the fatalities.
01:05 According to preliminary reports, there are two survivors who have been transferred to
01:09 a regional hospital center.
01:11 The local prosecutor's office has assumed the investigation, from which it has only
01:16 turned out that the Haitian citizens could have been illegal immigrants.
01:21 The Dominican government has established strict immigration controls against the neighboring
01:25 nation, which forces hundreds of Haitians who maintain family, commercial and even health
01:31 ties with the Dominican Republic to choose increasingly insecure roads for crossing the
01:36 border.
01:41 On Sunday, the Apostolic Nunciature of El Salvador announced that the martyrs of the
01:45 civil war who were assassinated by the military will be canonized.
01:50 The Archbishop of San Salvador, Monsignor José Luis Escobar, announced in a speech
01:54 during the closing mass of the celebrations, in honor of the divine child savior of the
02:00 world, one of the most important in the country, that the process of canonization of the martyrs
02:05 of the armed conflict has begun.
02:07 Among them is the Jesuit priest Ignacio Ayacuria, murdered in the facilities of the Central
02:12 American University of El Salvador, along with other priests and collaborators in November
02:18 of 1989.
02:20 Archbishop Escobar took advantage of the occasion to call on the government to free
02:24 the innocent people imprisoned during the regime of exception.
02:32 Let's go to Bolivia.
02:33 There, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 198th anniversary of that nation's
02:38 independence, President Luis Cerce Catacora called for national unity and reaffirmed his
02:43 commitment to the struggle for a country with social justice.
02:48 National and regional authorities participated in the celebration of the independence of
02:52 the Latin American nation, and the main event took place in the Legislative Assembly, where
02:57 authorities remembered the independence struggle fought in the nation during 16 years.
03:02 In this context, President Cerce reaffirmed the national will to fight for a social just
03:07 homeland and referred to some of the achievements that the nation has attained, among them the
03:13 recovery of the national economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.
03:18 Bolivia achieved independence from the Spanish Empire on August 6, 1825, and was re-founded
03:24 as a plurinational state with a new constitution in 2009.
03:34 I want to begin this message by reaffirming with great patriotic conviction our unwavering
03:41 determination, commitment, and perseverance to never stop fighting for a homeland with
03:49 social justice.
03:51 One hundred and ninety-eight years ago, Bolivia burst into the concert of free, sovereign,
03:58 and independent nations, an act preceded by an arduous and bloody war that for 16 years
04:06 kept the colonial power in Peru in check, which was finally sealed by the extraordinary
04:12 triumphs of the United Liberating Army, the famous fields of Junín and Ayacucho.
04:19 Neither with Lima nor with Buenos Aires, High Peru decided to become a new independent
04:26 country on that luminous day of August 6, 1825.
04:34 The Vice President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, David Choquehuanca, also recalled
04:39 the native peoples who defended the territory after three centuries of extermination and
04:44 plundering.
04:48 We remember the one hundred and ninety-eight years of the war of independence, fought for
04:54 sixteen years while we defeated the invaders, after three centuries of extermination and
05:01 plundering of resources.
05:04 It is a perfect moment to remember the struggle of thousands of anonymous native brothers
05:11 and sisters who defended their territories in order not to be wiped off the map and not
05:24 to be eliminated from the planet.
05:29 And after three days of debate, the Amazon Dialogues held in the Brazilian city of Belém
05:33 ended on Sunday.
05:35 In the event, representatives of various sectors of society discussed the future of the Amazon
05:40 region.
05:41 Since last Friday, representatives of social movements, academia, research centers, as
05:46 well as Brazilian government agencies and other Amazonian countries analyzed the challenges
05:52 facing the largest range forests in the planet.
05:55 The protection of the native people, the climate crisis and health, as well as sovereignty,
05:59 food security and the bioeconomy were the main topics were analyzed.
06:04 It is expected that at the close of the event, they will draft a document containing proposals
06:09 to protect and address the problems faced by the Amazon region and its inhabitants.
06:14 The final draft of the Amazon Dialogues will be sent to the leaders of the countries of
06:18 the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, who will meet next Monday and Tuesday, also
06:23 in the capital of the state of Pará, in the so-called Amazon Summit.
06:32 And a new incident of violence was recorded in the United States.
06:35 At least three people dead and two more injured in Washington, D.C.
06:39 Approximately around 8 p.m. local time, detonations were heard, alerting the security forces,
06:46 who upon arriving at the site found five people shot and wounded.
06:50 The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police reported that those killed are two men and a woman.
06:56 Meanwhile, two other males were taken to an assistance center for medical attention.
07:01 Authorities stated that they have begun investigations to determine who was responsible for the killings.
07:11 We are here again tonight on the scene of another senseless act of violence.
07:18 At approximately 8 p.m. tonight, our officers responded to the sounds of gunshots here in
07:23 the 1600 block of Good Hope Road, southeast.
07:27 When the officers arrived, they found five individuals who were injured by gunfire.
07:34 Four of those individuals were males, one is a female.
07:38 Three were pronounced on the scene, and two were transported to local area hospitals.
07:45 What I have to say tonight is this is very disturbing, very, very disturbing.
07:50 And we're asking you, the community, to please provide us with any information that you may
07:55 have with regards to this incident tonight.
08:00 Let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok @telluswithenglish,

08:12 Other stories coming up.

08:41 Welcome back.
08:43 According to a UNICEF report, children living in South Asia are exposed to temperatures
08:47 above 35 degrees Celsius for long hours.
08:51 The United Nations Children's Agency, children in countries such as Afghanistan, India, Sri
08:56 Lanka and Pakistan, among others, are exposed to scorching heat.
09:00 They are the most affected in the world by this phenomenon, not only in intensity but
09:05 also in time, as they face more than four heat waves every year.
09:09 The agency recalled that Kakobabad, a Pakistani city, recorded the highest temperature on
09:15 the planet when it reached 51 degrees Celsius.
09:19 They explained that children's anatomies cannot adapt quickly to changes in temperature.
09:28 The government of China created a new special fund to help those affected by rains in the
09:33 country's northern region.
09:35 The central administration, the Ministry of Finance and the Emergency Management of China
09:39 reported that $50 million were allocated to rescue works, as well as for the recovery
09:44 of affected buildings and constructions.
09:48 Authorities detailed that local governments will be able to make use of these funds to
09:52 face emergencies and assist the families affected by the typhoon Dok Suri.
10:01 Upon receiving the goods allocation instruction from the Ministry of Emergency Management,
10:07 the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration immediately issued the order to relieve supply
10:12 storage warehouses under the central government, who finished the loading of the supplies onto
10:17 trucks within half an hour and shipped them out of Taingin.
10:21 When these national relief materials goods reached Taingin, grassroots officials and
10:26 volunteers immediately got organized and took action swiftly to deliver them to the disaster-affected
10:32 people right away.
10:35 And in China, at least 23 people were injured and thousands of buildings collapsed after
10:40 a shallow 5.4 magnitude earthquake that struck eastern China on Sunday.
10:46 According to the US Geological Survey, the USGS, the quake struck at 2.33 am local time,
10:53 26 kilometers south of the city of Dezhou in Shandong province, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
10:59 The quake was felt as far away as Beijing and Tianjin, as well as in Shanghai, about
11:05 800 kilometers from the epicenter.
11:08 Videos on social media showed shaking light fixtures, trembling ground and people evacuating
11:13 their buildings, with one clip showing people walking past bricks scattered on the ground.
11:18 USGS's PAGER system, which provides preliminary assessments on the impact of the earthquakes,
11:25 issued a red alert, estimating extensive damage and some casualties were probable based on
11:30 the previous quake data.
11:46 Now we move on to other topics.
11:47 In Russia, at least one was injured and more than 20 people or 1,000 people lost their
11:52 gas supply.
11:54 After the Ukrainian attack on a school and a bridge in northern Crimea.
11:58 The educational institution was empty and the attack did not affect the structure of
12:03 the bridge.
12:04 However, the traffic in the area has been interrupted.
12:06 The governor, Vladimir Zelzho, denounced that the Ukrainian forces resort to state terrorism
12:12 by indecently attacking civilian infrastructure and that the main intention of the regime
12:17 was to attack the village school.
12:19 He also pointed out that the bridge does not have much military relevance.
12:28 On Sunday, Japan marked the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the
12:33 US, which killed almost 140,000 people.
12:38 The highlight of the event was the traditional peace declaration delivered at the ceremony
12:42 in the Peace Memorial Park by Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui.
12:47 On the occasion of the group of seven leaders' historic visit to Japan's park and its atomic
12:52 bomb museum, Matsui urged policymakers to abandon the motion that the nuclear weapons
12:57 deter war.
12:59 The gruesome nuclear legacy took center stage at the last G7 summit of major economies in
13:04 May in Japan.
13:05 A moment of silence was observed at 8.15 a.m. local time, the exact moment when the Iranian
13:12 bomb was dropped by the US bomber Enola Gay and detonated over the city of Honagos-de-Sex,
13:18 1945, killing an estimated 140,000 people by the end of the year.
13:30 Given the reality that there are some who will use nuclear threats, leaders around the
13:35 world need to face up to the fact that the theory of nuclear deterrence has failed and
13:40 urgently begin to take concrete steps to move us away from the dangers present towards our
13:45 ideal world.
13:50 The horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused by nuclear weapons must never be repeated.
13:56 Japan as the only country to have suffered nuclear war will continue to make tireless
14:00 efforts to realize a world without nuclear weapons while adhering to the three known
14:05 nuclear principles.
14:07 At least 30 asylum seekers are missing following two shipwrecks off the Italian island of Lampedusa.
14:14 On Sunday, the International Organization for Migration, the IOM, said survivors had
14:19 reported that around 28 people were lost at sea on one boat, while three were said to
14:24 be missing from the second following stormy weather on Saturday.
14:28 Both flimsy iron boats are believed to have set off from Sfax in Tunisia on Thursday.
14:34 On Sunday, rescue teams were also preparing to pull about 20 migrants to safety after
14:39 they were trapped on a rocky part of Lampedusa's coastline.
14:43 The Central Mediterranean crossing from North Africa to Europe is the world's deadliest.
14:48 Over 1,800 people have died attempting it so far this year, according to officials,
14:55 almost 900 more than last year.

15:23 Welcome back to From the South.
15:38 Niger remains under threat of military intervention on Monday following a warning from the directive
15:43 of the Economic Community of West African States.
15:47 After the expiration of the deadline given to the National Safeguards Council of the
15:51 Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, the council closed the airspace, mobilized
15:57 the troops to the borders of the host countries, and warned of a joint response.
16:02 However, the military intervention agreed to on Friday in the Nigerian capital by the
16:07 Western Bloc High Command did not take place.
16:10 ECOWAS reported on Monday that it is preparing a statement with next steps and does not rule
16:15 out a new visit to Nime.
16:25 And we stay in Niger, where about 30,000 coup supporters rallied on Sunday afternoon at
16:30 the General Seyni Count Che Stadium, the biggest stadium in Nime and in all Niger.
16:35 With only a few hours to go before the end of the ultimatum given to the junta of Niger
16:40 by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, the stadium was filled in
16:45 response to the call by several civil society organizations.
16:49 Nearly 30,000 people went to support the junta in a good atmosphere, and many Nigerian flags
16:54 were waving in the stands.
16:56 Several members of the council National Poorle Safeguard, the CNSP, were present and were
17:04 cheered for a long time.
17:13 In Senegal, deputies in the parliament have passed a vote which will effectively restore
17:18 the right of Turkey opposition figures to run in the country's presidential election
17:22 during February.
17:24 The vote clears any person who has been convicted by the either pardon or amnesty them to run
17:30 for office.
17:31 The decision allows opposition heavyweights Khalifa, Saul and Karim Wade to stand.
17:36 Interior Minister Antoine-Félix Abdoulaye Diom explained that many of the changes in
17:41 the law resulted from the national dialogue.
17:44 Many observers hope Saturday's parliamentary vote will help ease the tension being experienced
17:48 in the country in recent months, as opposition figures have frequently complained of moves
17:53 against them ahead of the presidential vote next year.
17:56 Basically, the idea was really to be able to grant amnesty to candidates such as Khalifa,
18:07 Saul and so many others for acts of which they have been accused.
18:12 And so we salute the republican dynamic that was felt in the room.
18:17 The Bino-parliamentarians, the Waldo-parliamentarians and the Taksawa-parliamentarians have honored
18:23 the commitments they made during this dialogue, which was initiated by the president of the
18:30 republic.
18:33 At least 28 people were killed on Sunday when an express train derailed in southern Pakistan,
18:38 the railway minister said, with an emergency declared at local hospitals struggling to
18:43 deal with dozens of injured.
18:46 Railway Minister Khawaja Zahed Rafiq told reporters that this is quite a big accident
18:51 and that at least 1,000 passengers were aboard the Hazara Express when it derailed on a section
18:57 of the tracks where no faults had been reported.
19:00 He also said that there could be two reasons, a mechanical failure or that the failure was
19:05 created, which means it could be sabotage but that they will investigate.
19:10 The derailment happened near the Sahara railway station close to Nabuwash city in the southern
19:15 Sindh province.
19:16 The railway minister announced that an emergency had been declared at local hospitals as doctors
19:22 struggled to treat the injured.
19:24 There were chaotic scenes at the Nabuwash trauma center as ambulances and private cars
19:29 ferried the injured for treatment.
19:36 And we have come to the end of this news brief.
