00:00 Welcome to WrestleTalk, and welcome to my review of Summerslam 2023...in about 10 minutes.
00:12 This show began with Logan Paul vs Ricochet, in the most viral match in WWE history.
00:16 The virality was so viral that the viral match became viral when the Viral Wrestler did his
00:21 viral entrance with his viral drink and viral, viral, viral, you get the idea.
00:25 Even though WWE weren't harping on about this match being the most viral match that ever
00:30 viraled, it was pretty fun though.
00:31 It started off a bit slower than you'd think for a match like this, but by the end it was
00:34 really fun.
00:35 Lots of back and forth action, lots of very fun near falls.
00:38 Logan somehow managed a Buckshot Lariat from in the ring, out of the ring to the outside,
00:43 and that feels illegal, but he did it somehow.
00:46 However the finish came when one of Logan's goons handed him some brass knuckles behind
00:50 the referee's back, and Logan knocked out Ricochet for the win.
00:53 This was a fun way to kick off the show, definitely nowhere near the most viral match in the history
00:57 of ever, but pretty good.
00:59 After that came Cody Rhodes vs Brock Lesnar 3, after a super self-indulgent video package
01:04 about how epic this saga has been despite us still not knowing why it even started in
01:10 the first place.
01:11 Now there were rumours abound before Summerslam that there may have potentially been a stipulation
01:15 announced for this match, but the psychology of this one worked so well without one.
01:20 Brock was portrayed as his dominant beast character once more, reliving the days of
01:24 being Suplex City Machine right after he conquered The Streak and John Cena.
01:28 There were suplexes aplenty, and Brock's insistence that Cody take a countout loss
01:32 to save himself was great.
01:35 Brock mullered Cody on the outside, hitting an F5 to the floor and an F5 through the announce
01:39 table, both of which Cody managed to get back into the ring for at the count of 9.
01:44 But after some Kimura Lock, Cody being portrayed as the beat up, broken but eternally determined
01:48 babyface, he made his comeback, locking in his own Kimura on Brock, hitting 3 crossroads
01:54 to get the victory.
01:55 Brock shook his hand after the match, and that puts that saga to rest.
02:00 So why did Brock attack him again?
02:03 In all seriousness, this was also very fun, another great addition to the card.
02:06 I assume Brock might take some time away now, but I wonder what's next for Cody.
02:10 It was time for the Slim Jim Battle Royal next, which was actually much better than
02:14 it had any right to be.
02:15 Omos was added last minute, and who could possibly eliminate him?
02:19 There were some good stories running throughout this battle royal though, with Shinsuke Nakamura,
02:22 Tommaso Ciampa and Bronson Reed's beef being felt, Chad Gable getting a stellar showing
02:26 and hitting some wonderful suplexes, and of course, LA Knight being the most overman on
02:31 the show.
02:32 Knight ended up getting the win in this one, last eliminating Sheamus, and it's nice
02:36 for Knight that he got on the card and got a win, but I'm not 100% sure what the point
02:41 of this was, other than for WWE to get some sponsorship money.
02:44 If there were some stakes attached to this, I'd be all on board, but this feels particularly
02:48 hollow after Trish and Becky were reportedly cut due to time constraints.
02:52 Still though, LA Knight got a win, and that's a thumbs up from me.
02:54 Shayna Baszler vs Ronda Rousey came next, and look, here's what I liked about this
03:00 match.
03:01 Shayna Baszler was portrayed as a serious threat, that's good, and this was probably
03:05 the best worked MMA style match in WWE history.
03:09 Ronda's bar is exceedingly low, and while they managed to put on something that was,
03:14 at times, borderline okay, this style just doesn't work in WWE, because worked MMA
03:20 looks ridiculous, especially coming from two people who have done actual MMA.
03:24 Even as someone who doesn't watch MMA barely at all, I could still tell very quickly that
03:29 this was being a bit derivative.
03:31 The crowd chanted "boring", which it was, and while Shayna got the win by making Ronda
03:36 pass out, which is still the correct result, this didn't achieve what they wanted it
03:40 to achieve.
03:41 Still though, if we get crazed killer NXT Shayna back, that's undoubtedly a good thing.
03:45 Up next was a lot of people's second most anticipated match on the card, Drew McIntyre
03:49 vs Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship.
03:52 This was exactly what you'd expect it to be, stiff as a dick, chops galore and the
03:56 most purple of chess by the end.
03:58 There were some legitimately great nearfalls, including Gunther kicking out of a Claymore,
04:03 but in the end it was a decisive combination of a big splash, lariat and powerbomb that
04:07 put Drew away.
04:08 I've seen some people be disappointed in this match because it wasn't as good as
04:12 Sheamus vs Gunther, or as good as the Triple Threat at WrestleMania, and while you're
04:16 right, I don't think it was, that doesn't make it bad.
04:19 This was still a 4.5 star match instead of a 5 star one, which I cannot possibly rank
04:24 as a bad thing on the show.
04:26 This was awesome, and Gunther's road to breaking Honki's record continues.
04:30 After that came my match of the night, which I don't think I'd have said before this
04:34 night began, Seth Rollins vs Finn Balor for the World Heavyweight Championship.
04:39 The dynamics of Seth vs Finn, 7 years removed from their Universal Championship match at
04:43 SummerSlam 2016, as well as Judgment Day looming with Damian Priest holding the Money in the
04:48 Bank briefcase, it was a very tasty set up, and boy howdy did they deliver.
04:52 The match psychology was simple but effective, with Balor working over Seth's left arm
04:57 for the majority.
04:58 As predicted, Balor of course hit the Buckle Bomb into the barricade, the same move that
05:02 injured Balor in that match with Seth all those years ago, which was a great callback.
05:06 This led into a sequence at the end of the match, with some genuinely heart-stopping
05:11 false finishes.
05:12 Damian Priest came out with his briefcase in tow, distracting Rollins, and behind the
05:16 referee's back, Priest hit Seth, straight into a pedigree from Balor, onto Seth, but
05:21 Seth kicked out.
05:22 After some more shenanigans involving the rest of Judgment Day, Seth hit the stomp on
05:26 Balor, but Balor kicked out.
05:29 Priest offered to help Balor by using the briefcase as a weapon, but Balor initially
05:33 declined.
05:34 But after he couldn't put Seth away, he changed tack, asking for the briefcase, but
05:37 by this point, Priest had second thoughts.
05:40 He slowly slid the briefcase into the ring, and walked around the ring to try and distract
05:45 the ref, but Rollins used that to his advantage, hitting the stomp onto Finn, onto the briefcase,
05:50 to retain.
05:52 Seth and Balor stared at each other after the match, with Priest silently shaking his
05:56 head at Finn.
05:57 I really, really liked this match.
06:00 The action genuinely had me on the edge of my seat, and my jaw dropped at least like
06:04 three times in this match alone.
06:05 While I think Balor winning would have potentially set up some more interesting avenues to take
06:09 the world title, I'm not annoyed at all about the route they've taken.
06:12 Big thumbs up for me on this one.
06:14 The Women's Triple Threat WWE title match came next between Bianca Belair, Asuka and
06:18 Charlotte Flair.
06:19 Very bad and awkward product placement aside on Bianca's entrance, gross, this match
06:24 always felt like something was slightly off to me.
06:27 Like they were just a step out of time, or not quite on the same page all the time.
06:31 The action was good, but it didn't hook me in like some other matches on the card
06:34 did.
06:35 The story of this one was Bianca being Super Bianca.
06:38 You know, that thing that some fans have been complaining about.
06:41 So WWE did that, but more of it.
06:44 She had an injured knee during the match, and after a bump to the outside, was fake
06:47 legit injured, and was being taken out of the match by medical professionals, which
06:52 I did not buy for a second.
06:54 Bianca powered her way back into the match, breaking up a figure eight on Asuka with a
06:58 top rope 450 splash, but Charlotte kicked out.
07:00 Charlotte later on locked in the figure eight on Bianca, with her already damaged knee,
07:05 but before she could tap, Asuka misted Charlotte, went to kick Bianca but Bianca ducked, rolled
07:10 Asuka up and got the pinfall victory.
07:13 Bianca is your new Women's Champ.
07:15 I thought the finish and story in isolation was very well done.
07:18 It told a compelling story of the Ultimate Underdog overcoming all the odds.
07:22 Looking outside that bubble though, this was a bit more of what people have been complaining
07:27 about, with Bianca always winning, and with Asuka continually feeling like an afterthought
07:32 in her own matches.
07:33 But the night didn't stop there, because we've got a new injured champion on our
07:37 hands.
07:38 So here's Io, Sky and Bayley, with them taking out everyone at ringside as well as
07:42 the injured Bianca.
07:43 Io cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase, hit a moonsault and pinned Bianca to become
07:48 your new Women's Champion.
07:50 While I may not have gotten too much out of the match beforehand or the story with Bianca,
07:54 the way it was done perfectly set up the Io cash-in, which was a genuinely heartwarming
07:59 moment with Bayley and Io embracing before being joined by Dakota Kai, damage control
08:04 celebrated one year after joining forces at SummerSlam 2022.
08:08 The end result of this was great, I just wasn't a huge fan of how we got there.
08:12 And lastly, it's Tribal Combat, Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso.
08:16 I don't need to go too much into the weeds on this match because you would guess a lot
08:20 of the stuff.
08:21 A lot of taunting, chair shots, kendo sticks, a couple of table spots, a solo Sokoa ruining
08:25 Jey's day, you get the picture.
08:27 Jey had a couple of nice nearfalls, but after it looked like he had the winning formula,
08:31 that's when it happened.
08:34 Roman accidentally speared Solo earlier in the match, leading to Solo questioning Roman's
08:38 allegiance later on.
08:39 Jey took advantage, spearing Roman through the barricade and taking out Solo through
08:43 the commentary table.
08:44 Jey speared Reigns again, hidden Uso splash for the one, two, but a mystery person dragged
08:51 Jey out of the ring, much in exactly the same way Solo did during Drew's bout with Roman
08:56 at Clash at the Castle.
08:57 The mystery person was revealed to be…
09:00 Jimmy Uso.
09:02 Turning on his brother, Jimmy superkicked Jey, threw him back into the ring, and Roman
09:06 got the victory.
09:07 Roman retains, Jimmy turned on Jey, and the Usos are seemingly no more.
09:12 Right, so I said on the Summerslam predictions video on WrestleTalk Podcast that if Jimmy
09:16 turned on Jey, this story would officially jump the shark.
09:20 On paper, I stand by that statement.
09:22 Without any reasons given right now, that turn makes absolutely no sense based on everything
09:27 that has happened up to this point from the Bloodline's inception to now.
09:31 I'm not going to be naive and claim that there's nothing they can do to save this,
09:34 but what I will say is they better have a damn good explanation promo from Jimmy to
09:40 rationalise what happened here, because everything we've been told about Jimmy and Jey up to
09:44 now would indicate that Jimmy would never, ever betray his brother.
09:49 This is literally what the entire story has been about.
09:53 Their brotherhood, their bond, and how Roman can't break that.
09:56 I went into this match not expecting Jey to win.
09:59 I thought it would have been narratively neat, sure, and I definitely would have enjoyed
10:03 it had he won, but I expected Roman to win.
10:05 I just don't think that this finish is what people wanted.
10:09 WWE has done a miraculous job in reinvigorating the Bloodline story in 2022 and 2023, but
10:16 now you can't keep delaying that gratification.
10:19 You can't keep denying the end of the story, because there's only so long people will
10:23 wait for it.
10:25 People will start to check out.
10:26 For some people, that was way before 2022.
10:29 For some, it was Drew McIntyre.
10:30 For some, it was Sami Zayn.
10:32 For some, it was Cody Rhodes.
10:34 And now for some, it's going to be Jey Uso.
10:36 Is there anything left of the Bloodline story?
10:39 Of course there is.
10:40 But they've got a mountain to climb to make this seem like a good decision.
10:43 Does anybody want a Jey vs Jimmy feud?
10:47 I personally really, really don't.
10:49 And while I don't speak for all by any means, the general consensus that I'd heard is that
10:54 people weren't a fan of this one, and I think that's absolutely valid.
10:58 So overall then, SummerSlam.
11:01 I thought it was fine.
11:02 The wrestling was all great, aside from the MMA rules match and some slight botchiness
11:06 in the Women's Triple Threat, and compared to the standard that Triple H has set for
11:09 his PLEs this year, this didn't come close.
11:12 While pretty much every PLE in 2023 has been a 4 or 5 out of 5, this one is just a 3, and
11:19 a low 3 at that.
11:20 But do you disagree with me?
11:21 Let me know in the comments, and if it's your first time here, please do subscribe
