00:02:15 (laughing)
00:02:15 - Okay.
00:02:16 I suppose it is a useful,
00:02:19 being a regular idea,
00:02:21 but does it work, Dr. Thomas?
00:02:23 - Yeah!
00:02:24 - Time is ticking.
00:02:25 Tick, tock, tick, tick, tock.
00:02:28 - Another invention of my little sister's today.

00:02:42 - Yes!
00:02:42 - The unicycle!
00:02:43 - On it, Doc!
00:02:44 - We can go counterclockwise.
00:02:46 (laughing)
00:02:47 - Why does it have to be counterclockwise?
00:02:49 - Because I'm always racing against time, Mrs. Harlow.
00:02:53 And it would cause the machine to explode.
00:02:55 - It explodes?
00:02:56 - Ah, I need some people to operate the rivets.
00:02:59 Perfect!
00:03:00 You and you!

00:06:37 Here is the 1919 Olds Mobile Truck,
00:06:49 which became very popular among delivery agents
00:06:52 like grocery stores to deliver their goods.
00:07:03 The 1927 GMC Sedan was used to deliver packages.
00:07:08 This is the 1926 Shell Tanker,
00:07:13 which met the unprecedented demand
00:07:16 for gasoline and motor oil.
00:07:18 Every vehicle here has a story.
00:07:21 There's a story about the car itself
00:07:24 and the story about the social times.

00:18:13 - Come aboard and ride the authentic steam train.
00:18:40 The person on the train that does all the hard work
00:18:42 is called the locomotive.
00:18:44 There are two people at the cab of the engine,
00:18:47 an engineer and a fireman that keeps the locomotive running
00:18:50 and pulling all those carriages and passengers.
00:18:53 While the engineer makes sure that everything is running right
00:18:57 and watches anything on its path,
00:18:59 the fireman shovels coal into the firebox
00:19:02 and always watching the fire, its color,
00:19:05 and see how high the fire is.
00:19:08 (upbeat music)
00:19:11 When you board the train, you are taking a step back in time
00:19:16 and it's a unique experience and you get advantage point
00:19:20 to see the park that you can't see any other way.
00:19:24 There are 3,000 gallons of water
00:19:28 in the boiler of each locomotives.
00:19:31 That's a lot of water, which is kept incredibly hot
00:19:35 and it's like a giant tea kettle.
00:19:38 And what's coming off of a tea kettle when it's hot?
00:19:41 That's right, steam.
00:19:43 The steam builds up pressure
00:19:45 and that pressure pushes all the other components
00:19:49 such as the piston, the rods, and the wheels
00:19:53 and makes the train move forward.
00:19:56 There are three train stations throughout the park.
00:20:05 Many tourists love the steam train at the park
00:20:08 as it is a sight to see.
00:20:10 The train hurling a trail of smoke,
00:20:13 the sound of its bells and whistles,
00:20:15 and when it's idle, the air pumps like it's breathing.
00:20:19 Definitely one of the most alive pieces of machinery ever.

00:21:32 span Western Canadian history from the 1860s to the 1950s.
00:21:37 You will see the iconic past, not only preserved,
00:21:43 but also presented alive and in great working condition.
00:21:47 Heritage Park is divided into four time periods.
00:21:53 From the early days of the settlement
00:21:55 to the beginnings of our modern era,
00:21:58 they're all here to discover.
00:22:00 You are now entering Heritage Park's 1910 town,
00:22:07 a representation of a typical prairie railway town.
00:22:11 Canada's important rail history is on display
00:22:15 throughout the park.
00:22:16 The famous Five Centre of Canadian Women.
00:22:22 It was built to commemorate the achievements
00:22:25 of five courageous Alberta women
00:22:27 who fought for legal equality for all Canadian women.
00:22:31 The exhibit is a replica of Nellie MacLung's home,
00:22:35 where she lived during the 1920s
00:22:37 and penned several significant literary works.
00:22:41 Nellie made up one fifth of the famous five,
00:22:45 resulting in monumental advancements in women's rights
00:22:48 and changing Canadian history.
00:22:51 (footsteps)
00:22:53 The MacLungs are famous for their hospitality,
00:22:56 kept a large and welcoming home,
00:22:59 set within carefully tended gardens.

00:23:35 This charming house with gingerbread details
00:23:39 was built by carpenter Peter Dewar in 1907.
00:23:43 A cottage hospital was a common sight
00:23:46 in a small Western Canada at the turn of 20th century.
00:23:51 The building was often a house converted for the purpose,
00:23:55 served the community from cradle to grave.
00:23:58 The cottage hospital was modestly equipped
00:24:01 and common surgeries were performed
00:24:04 on the dining room table.
00:24:06 (upbeat music)
00:24:08 This elegant home belonged
00:24:19 to renowned businessman Peter Prince.
00:24:22 Did you know that Princess Island Park
00:24:25 was named after Mr. Prince?
00:24:27 This 3000 square foot mason was once located
00:24:31 at the heart of downtown Calgary.
00:24:34 In 1966, the Prince house was donated to Heritage Park.
00:24:39 The move required the removal of 25,000 bricks
00:24:44 and the house was divided into three sections.
00:24:47 Today, it is a major tourist attraction
00:24:51 and the interior has been restored and refurnished.
00:24:54 Items which originally belonged to the Prince family
00:24:57 are on display in the dining room.
00:25:01 Some believe that this house is haunted.
00:25:04 Images of a lady in long white dress have been reported
00:25:08 and many Heritage Park employees
00:25:10 refuse to enter the house alone.
00:25:13 (upbeat music)
00:25:30 In 1909, W. Part Evans established the Stratmore Standard
00:25:35 using machinery that included a seven ton Wharfdale press
00:25:40 which had been built in Scotland in 1870.
00:25:44 The press had formerly been used
00:25:45 in production of the Calgary Herald,
00:25:48 Edmonton Bulletin and the Glacian Call.

00:26:34 Settlers in the Canadian West were often isolated
00:26:37 from friends and family and waited months
00:26:39 for correspondences to reach its destination.
00:26:43 This structure was built by Rasmus Kov in 1908.
00:26:47 Real artifacts like the switchboard
00:26:49 and stamps were on display.

00:26:54 This replica of Calgary's first town hall
00:26:58 offers a large council chamber
00:27:00 and features a stunning solid oak boardroom table.
00:27:05 The two story structure housed a police office
00:27:08 complete with jail cells, a council chamber,
00:27:11 a clerk's office and a tiny courtroom.
00:27:14 (upbeat music)
00:27:16 This Northwest mounted police barracks
00:27:19 or outpost was built in June 1905.
00:27:22 They made regular patrols
00:27:24 to prevent thievery and horse rustling.
00:27:28 During its heyday in the early 1900s,
00:27:31 the Canmore Opera House hosted a variety of events
00:27:34 including lavish dances, plays and concerts.
00:27:37 (upbeat music)
00:27:40 The big hotel in town was the social headquarters
00:27:45 of any small town and the Wainwright Hotel
00:27:48 maintains that tradition right in the heart
00:27:51 of the historical village.
00:27:53 The hotel was originally built
00:27:56 in the small town of Denwood, Alberta
00:27:59 with the expectation that the railway would stop there.
00:28:02 When it went through the town of Wainwright instead,
00:28:06 the townspeople simply moved the hotel,
00:28:09 rolling it on logs which took three months.
00:28:12 The hotel now functions as a dine-in restaurant
00:28:17 open for counter and table services.

00:29:06 - You should audit mine.
00:29:08 Or we could validate it now.
00:29:11 - I don't have to.
00:29:12 - Working on your invention right in front
00:29:14 of the post office.
00:29:16 Do you have a permit to work here?
00:29:18 - Naturally.
00:29:19 (speaking in foreign language)
00:29:20 That's Spanish for one memento.
00:29:23 - I must be going.
00:29:25 - Ah, going where?
00:29:27 - Marley.
00:29:28 - With all these new inventors in town,
00:29:31 each and every one of them needs an appointment
00:29:33 to pitch a patent for the upcoming
00:29:35 Edmonton Industrial Exhibition tomorrow.
00:29:38 - That's where I'm headed next.
00:29:40 - What's an industrial exhibition?
00:29:42 - Oh, it's a showcase where inventors show off
00:29:44 their great, brilliant ideas for the future.
00:29:46 - That's right.
00:29:47 Anything industrial or agriculturally advanced.
00:29:51 - Oh yes, people come from all over the world
00:29:54 to show their bright ideas,
00:29:55 even from as far away as, where are you from?
00:29:57 - Montreal.
00:29:58 - Montreal, yeah.
00:30:00 (laughing)
00:30:01 - That's right.
00:30:02 Anything inspiring or electrifying.
00:30:05 Oh, what do you have there?
00:30:07 Oh, this is the latest invention
00:30:08 from our local school teacher in town.
00:30:10 It's called a thesaurus.
00:30:12 (laughing)
00:30:14 This will help you find more interesting words
00:30:16 in a regular vocabulary, jargon, or lexicon.
00:30:21 - Oh, sounds to be a success.
00:30:23 - Oh, the better one's still to come, Marley.
00:30:25 (speaking in foreign language)
00:30:28 If anybody wants to receive a patent
00:30:31 in this area of Alberta, you have to go through me.
00:30:34 - I'd love to have a chat with you, Deb-Dawg.
00:30:36 - Let's book an appointment.
00:30:37 - Oh, a dog can show you something incredible.
00:30:40 - Don't anything dog-like
00:30:42 like the one you see in an exhibition of a dog.
00:30:43 - Why not?
00:30:44 - He is notorious for being neglectful of rules.
00:30:48 - Or making anything that works.
00:30:50 - Well, he just needs some time to make it work.
00:30:54 - Because, Marley, I don't have time.
00:30:56 Look at these new inventors I've had for so long.
00:30:59 - Look, it's a paper tomorrow, and--
00:31:03 - It's marbles by papers, or in Spanish, mi papers.
00:31:06 (laughing)
00:31:08 - You classify this chicken scratches paperwork.
00:31:12 - Ah, the accumulation of four years of research,
00:31:15 four days in Chicago at the World's Fair,
00:31:17 22 weeks in a shed hammering, polishing,
00:31:21 hot hacky-sacking, and all for the future benefit
00:31:24 where I predict this will be in demand.
00:31:26 - Very well, Dr. Thomas.
00:31:29 I shall give you precisely 180 seconds
00:31:33 to prove that your invention is A, useful,
00:31:37 B, and a witty one, and C, actually works.
00:31:42 - My experiment is this, the wireless photophone.
00:31:47 - Hey, that's mine!
00:31:52 - It's mine?
00:31:52 I'm the one that did the big reveal?
00:31:54 - I mean, I'm sorry.
00:31:55 - Oh, what does it do?
00:31:57 - It transmits speech from a light wave
00:32:00 instead of over a wire.
00:32:02 - Yeah, you said it, Doc!
00:32:05 So that way you don't need wires to speak to someone.
00:32:07 - But it's already been invented.
00:32:09 - His definition is correct, Dr. Thomas.
00:32:12 The wireless photophone has already been invented
00:32:14 and practiced, so you cannot do it again today.
00:32:18 - Wait, wait, I swear, no, it differs.
00:32:20 - Ah, I'm gonna do it.
00:32:23 - You have 120 seconds left to prove it.
00:32:26 - This mouthpiece directs the sound of your voice
00:32:28 down to a mirror transceiver.
