: "My daughter Hope, who was 36 years old, had been sick for many years. One day, 3 years ago, while my daughter was in the hospital waiting for surgery, I was looking online at a Boston terrier rescue site. I said to my husband and my daughter, I think I just bought a dog! Hope quickly perked up and said 'We could name her Stella,' and so we did. We have another Boston terrier, named Truffle. Both dogs were beside Hope in her bed all the time. She always thought the dogs could pick up on her low or high blood sugars, or when she was feeling sick. Hope ended up on dialysis and had numerous health issues over the years. She decided after having two broken feet, and facing amputation, that she wanted to stop treatment. There was no doubt that nothing was going to make her ever feel better. So she came home and had 2 weeks at home with her family and her dogs by her side. As you can imagine, we were all devastated over the loss. It’s a pain I never knew existed. But little did I know how deeply it affected the dogs. 6 months after this loss, I was getting ready for bed, and was on the phone to my sister. I said, 'Oh my gosh, something is wrong with Stella. I’ll call you back.' I then saw Stella laying on my pillow with her nose just about touching the picture of Hope that I keep on top of my journal. I had my phone in my hand, and while crying myself, I videotaped it. I could not believe my eyes and my ears. Stella cried for about a minute and then I grabbed her and hugged her so tight."
