A potent storm will bring ample rainfall and thunderstorms from the central to the eastern United States through Friday, raising the risk of flooding.
Transcript
00:00 High pressure centered over Texas.
00:01 This system has its claws in the South Central.
00:05 It refuses to let go and now with
00:08 some excess monsoonal moisture
00:09 moving right around the periphery
00:11 of high pressure, we have had
00:14 bands of soaking thunderstorms,
00:16 bringing major trouble into the
00:18 Midwest and parts of the Mid South.
00:20 States like Missouri, Illinois,
00:22 Indiana, even Iowa,
00:23 with some serious rainfall.
00:25 Look at the numbers here over the past 48 hours.
00:29 Nearly 8 inches of rain in Rosebud,
00:31 Missouri, nearly 7 in Fulton,
00:33 and then into Albion, Illinois.
00:34 Nearly 6 inches of rain and we have more to come.
00:38 That's why we have flood watches out across the region.
00:41 You can see from Mount Vernon,
00:43 Illinois to Paducah, Kentucky,
00:44 and then the second area stretching
00:46 from Lincoln, Franklin and Moore
00:47 counties in Tennessee into Huntsville,
00:49 Alabama, even out towards
00:50 Southern and Central Alabama.
00:51 I do think we'll have some heavy rain.
00:54 On that note,
00:55 here's how the rainfall continues
00:56 to move across those same areas,
00:58 dropping rain on saturated ground,
00:59 leading to the flooding and
01:01 flash flooding threat.
01:02 You ready?
01:02 Let's follow the clock here through
01:04 the rest of your Thursday and you
01:06 can see those bands in green and
01:08 yellow across Middle Tennessee into
01:10 North Georgia and Alabama as well.
01:12 Looking along I-65 and East as we
01:14 move into the late night and early
01:16 Friday morning I want you to pay
01:18 attention not just to the flash
01:20 flood warnings if any pop up around
01:22 you but keep an eye on any localized.
01:24 Creeks or streams,
01:25 those smaller waterways will have
01:27 bigger problems with this heavy
01:28 rainfall over the few days that
01:30 we're looking at it considering
01:32 well all that rain has to go
01:34 somewhere and downstream flow could
01:35 lead to some localized river flooding.
01:37 Now in terms of the rainfall
01:39 throughout the week,
01:40 I told you it's going to be rounds of it
01:42 like we've seen already this week.
01:44 And here are the final numbers we're
01:46 expecting to see by the time we get
01:48 through Saturday.
01:49 So this is the stretch from Monday to
01:51 Saturday looking at cities like Nashville.
01:53 In that two to four inch range,
01:55 right on that line of two to four
01:57 and four to eight inches of rain.
02:00 Knoxville as well,
02:00 right on that line,
02:02 but into areas of the Great Smoky Mountains,
02:04 even up towards Sevierville or Gatlinburg,
02:06 we could see up to about 8 inches of rainfall,
02:09 and that's some serious rain
02:10 into mountainous terrain.
02:11 I do expect flooding to be an issue.
02:13 We also have the potential for some
02:15 severe storms as well in this same area.
02:18 Today,
02:18 so unfortunately it's like rubbing
02:19 salt in the wound here.
02:21 Nashville, Memphis, Huntsville,
02:21 Birmingham, all the way to Atlanta.
02:23 We're looking at those flooding
02:25 and stormy weather forces,
02:26 but also damaging gusty winds.
02:27 Not everyone will see a severe storm,
02:29 but will have spotty severe
02:30 weather to contend with.
02:31 Nashville as we move into Friday,
02:33 more of the same thunderstorms
02:34 that we're looking at today,
02:36 Saturday and Sunday.
02:36 A stray thunderstorm possible,
02:38 but a lot sunnier than what
02:39 we'll see today and tomorrow.
