Two persons become "physically" connected in 'Tether' | New Day

  • last year
An arrogant playboy and a timid young woman become connected "physically" following their one-night stand.
That means, whatever pleasure or pain they inflict on themselves the other person will feel simultaneously.
How will this "connection" affect their relationship?
Will this lead to abuse and self-harm?

With us now in the studio are the people behind Cinemalaya entry 'Tether.'
We have Director Gian Arre and producer Rea Robles.

00:13 Even if you don't say it, I know that you love me.
00:23 Does it hurt?
00:29 There you go, an arrogant playboy and a timid young woman become connected physically following their one night stand.
00:35 That means, you know, whatever pleasure or pain they inflict on themselves, the other person will feel simultaneously.
00:41 How will this connection affect the relationship?
00:44 Will this lead to abuse and self-harm?
00:46 Well, with us now in the studio to explain all that are the people behind CinemaLya entry, Tether.
00:52 We have the director, Gian Are, and producer, Rhea Robles.
00:55 Good morning to you both.
00:56 Thank you so much for joining us. Direk, I want to watch some more.
01:00 I was so excited there, right?
01:02 I mean, of course, you're so brave to come up with this concept in terms of exploring this topic.
01:09 Tell me a little bit about Tether.
01:11 You know, what inspired you or what came into your mind?
01:17 You know, I really want to write a story about it.
01:19 Actually, it is a character study of this one relationship.
01:22 And it's funny that people ask about inspiration because everyone in the crew and the cast would always bring in their own traumas and their own past relationships to the table.
01:31 So I think there's a little bit of that in everyone.
01:34 We're either part of a toxic relationship or we were once in that position or were victims of that.
01:41 So I think it's really an exploration of that.
01:43 So this one, you explore the toxicity of a relationship and how it affects you even after you've moved on in time?
01:52 I think that's the special thing about Tether is in typical relationships, you can just say, "Why don't you just abandon it? Why don't you just break up with someone?"
02:01 But in this particular situation, they're sort of trapped in that connection where anything that the other person feels, the other person could feel.
02:09 So how that manifests is how what we play with the film.
02:13 It starts out heavenly.
02:15 Like if another person feels a certain pleasure, the other one would also feel it.
02:19 But when you introduce their own self-harm, what does that do?
02:23 Like someone is held hostage.
02:25 And how did you find the characters to play your lead?
02:30 As I understand, they had to go through intimacy workshops for this.
02:35 We first talked to Jory Bell.
02:38 Actually, we just saw a five-minute clip of her acting.
02:41 It was her, right?
02:42 That was it? You wanted that timid and shy?
02:45 She really could convey a lot of emotion from just her face.
02:49 And then when we were looking for Eric to pair up with Jory Bell, that's when we came across Mikoy.
02:54 And when we got them two together to speak for the first time, it just clicked.
02:58 So fortunately, they both also have maybe histories, personal histories.
03:03 So it helps. You need a history.
03:05 It wasn't a requirement, but it really helped them, I guess.
03:09 I guess get into character and just understand certain complexities in relationships.
03:14 How did you come into this project, Ray?
03:17 I mean, you are the producer, and you've known, of course, Direk, for quite some time,
03:22 having worked with projects and other things together.
03:25 He tapped me around February because he was also contacted by Cinemalaya to do this.
03:32 So from then, there were no, I think, production houses that were able to produce in such a short time
03:41 because we only have six months to produce it.
03:44 So I trusted him on his script.
03:48 I was there during the script development also, so I already know what he wanted and what he's looking for.
03:55 So it was easier. There was no going back and forth on what the production really needs.
04:00 Yeah, I mean, basically, it's interesting also for this film is because originally you weren't part of the 10.
04:07 What happened? Did someone back out or someone didn't join?
04:11 Actually, I became another semi-finalist for the 2024 batch.
04:16 And then when they discovered that the script was written, and then one was backing out,
04:20 they asked us if we wanted to make it this year in five months' time.
04:26 Okay, we'll do our best.
04:30 Is this rated in any particular way? I mean, considering you do have some intimate scenes?
04:35 I think it was always a concern.
04:38 But when we were doing the project, we were very adamant about treating sex differently as opposed to other films.
04:45 So it was really more on the emotional side of that.
04:47 And I think that carries on to how we produce it visually,
04:50 how we did the treatment into approaching the several sex scenes, intimate bed scenes that we had.
04:55 So I think that carried off across.
04:57 So it was more on the emotional intimacy than anything else.
05:00 Okay, Ray, why did you invite our viewers to come and catch this wonderful film?
05:06 So, speak to whatever camera you want.
05:10 Please catch Tether on Cinemalaya 19 this year.
05:16 So it's on August 7. Our premiere is on August 7, 9 p.m. on PICC.
05:20 All right. Well, thank you once again for joining us.
05:22 Of course, this is a fine. We featured all 10 films and you are the 10th.
05:26 So thank you so much for joining us this morning, Durek, Gian and of course, Rhea.
05:30 All the best to you and good luck. Thank you. Thank you so much.
