As INDIA MPs who have toured the violence-hit areas of Manipur met the President today, other opposition MPs are still keeping their outrage over the unrest in the northeast alive in Parliament. All of this even though Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has already agreed to take up the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led NDA government next week. The debate will be held from the 8th to 10th of August and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the motion on the 10th of August. What's interesting is that the outcome of this no-confidence motion is a forgone conclusion, because the opposition simply doesn't have the numbers.

00:00 As India MPs who have toured the violence-hit areas of Manipur met the President today,
00:10 other opposition MPs are still keeping their outrage over the unrest in the North East
00:14 alive in the Parliament.
00:16 All of this even though Lok Sabha Speaker Om Billa has already agreed to take up the
00:20 no-confidence motion against the BJP-led India government next week.
00:24 The debate will be held from the 8th to 10th of August and Prime Minister Narendra Modi
00:28 will reply to the motion on the 10th of August.
00:32 What is interesting is that the outcome of this no-confidence motion is a foregone conclusion
00:36 because the opposition simply doesn't have the numbers.
00:40 Even if the entire opposition votes against the government, they would have less than
00:43 210 votes.
00:45 On the other hand, the government needs the support of 272 MPs to win the no-confidence
00:49 vote.
00:50 The BJP alone has 301 members in the Lok Sabha.
00:53 So why is the opposition, with around 141 seats in the Lok Sabha, going ahead with this,
00:58 knowing very well that it cannot win?
01:01 The answer lies in the optics.
01:02 While it may not have the winning numbers, the India bloc may still win the battle of
01:07 perception.
01:08 "The India Alliance knows the number of people in the Lok Sabha.
01:12 But this is not just about the number.
01:14 This is about the fight for justice in Manipur.
01:24 And I want to send a message to the brothers and sisters of Manipur.
01:30 Even though PM Modi has forgotten Manipur, the India Alliance is with him in this moment
01:36 of grief.
01:37 And we are fighting for their rights in the Lok Sabha.
01:40 We are not fighting for the seats outside the seats, but for the seats inside the seats.
01:45 Because this is not just about Manipur.
01:48 This is spreading in other states.
01:50 For the sake of national security and the integrity of the country, PM Modi should come
01:56 inside the seats and address the country."
02:00 The opposition is hell-bent on forcing the PM to make a statement on Manipur.
02:04 And the no-confidence vote is their way of ensuring it.
02:07 PM Modi did address the Manipur issue the day parliament convened for the monsoon session
02:11 on the 20th of July.
02:12 But this did not satisfy the opposition.
02:15 And they have since insisted on a no-confidence motion since, according to protocol, the Prime
02:20 Minister being the head of the Council of Ministers responds to a debate when a no-confidence
02:24 is discussed.
02:25 Making the PM speak will not only serve what might be seen as a victory for the opposition
02:30 after allegations of the PM's reluctance to speak on the subject, especially on the
02:34 collapse of the state law and order machinery of Manipur, but it will also be a show of
02:38 strength for the opposition and show that it can work unitedly.
02:42 Additionally, it could damage the double-engine Sarkar model that the BJP promotes at all
02:47 election rallies.
02:48 Manipur has clearly put a question mark on that model.
02:57 However, the battle of optics is unlikely to go entirely the opposition's way.
03:01 There will be some victories for the NDA team.
03:04 With the PM speaking, the NDA will get a chance to control the narrative, especially if the
03:08 PM brings up crimes against women in Chhattisgarh or Rajasthan as he did outside the parliament
03:13 on the first day of this session.
03:15 The PM could also punch holes in the opposition's facade of unity, bringing up its lack of consensus
03:38 on a PM's face for 2024.
03:41 All in all, it's a balancing act for both sides, even though the outcome is already
03:46 decided.
