00:00 This Sunday falls on the Feast of the Transfiguration.
00:05 What is the Feast of the Transfiguration all about?
00:08 Because it's meant to be something for us.
00:12 It's not just about what happens to Jesus on top of Mount Tabor.
00:16 And here's a way to understand it.
00:18 Let's say that you have the habit of going out to breakfast frequently with a dear friend
00:22 and you share your lives with each other, that you know everything about your friend.
00:28 You take turns picking up the tab, but this particular day your friend turns to you and
00:32 says, "I have to tell you something.
00:34 I just inherited a hundred million dollars."
00:41 Now the waiter brings the check.
00:43 If your friend doesn't reach for the check that morning, what happens?
00:47 There's something wrong.
00:48 Because he has more money than God at this point, of course he's going to pay for the
00:53 check and of course he needs to give you some of this cash that has befallen him because
01:01 this windfall that's been given to him, because that's what friends do.
01:04 St. Thomas, when he talks about friendship, he says, "Friendship, now it is proper to
01:09 friendship that a person reveals his secrets to his friend."
01:12 Jesus is doing that in the Transfiguration.
01:14 "Because friendship unites their affections and of two hearts makes one.
01:19 The same union requires that he should share his belongings with him.
01:24 Because since a man regards his friend as his other self, it follows that he will take
01:29 care of him as he would take care of himself by sharing his goods with him."
01:35 So if this happens just on any earthly level, of course what happens on Mount Tabor, Jesus
01:42 wants to give to us as well.
01:43 He's saying, "There is a way of living your humanity, of becoming like God, of being transformed
01:50 so that all the weakness and all the limit and imperfection that otherwise gets us down,
01:57 that's going to be changed if you accept what I'm showing you here.
02:01 You accept this gift."
02:02 St. Leo the Great says, "Through the Transfiguration, the whole body of Christ was to understand
02:08 the kind of transformation that it would receive as his gift."
02:14 Jesus on Mount Tabor is saying to you and me, "Become what you behold.
02:20 Let's let him change our lives."
