00:00 Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I am Luke Owen and this is wrestling news.
00:13 To paraphrase the late and great Sinead O'Connor, it's been several hours and 439 days since
00:20 Randy Orton last wrestled in a WWE ring. It was reported by several outlets at the time
00:25 that Orton had suffered a legit back injury and would be out for the rest of the year.
00:30 Well we're now, if you can believe it, 8 months into this new year, and there's still
00:35 no sign of an Orton return despite rumours to the contrary. There was huge speculation
00:40 ahead of Money in the Bank that Orton would return, with Warch Wrestling on Twitter saying
00:44 that WWE were expecting him back very soon. Matt Riddle even noted on The Bump that he
00:49 wanted to form a new alliance with Edge when Orton came back as Rated RK-Bro. But Orton
00:55 was not at Money in the Bank and a new team was not formed. Instead Riddle just found
00:59 a replacement Randy in Elias, and when that storyline went nowhere and he was drafted
01:03 to a different brand, he found a new Elias in Drew McIntyre as he fused with Gunther.
01:07 And in a new report from Fightful, we shouldn't expect to see Riddle teaming with Orton any
01:10 time soon as Randy might not be back for a while yet.
01:15 Sean Ross Sapp reports that Orton's back injury is quite a unique one in the world
01:19 of wrestling, writing, "Lower back fusion isn't typical among pro wrestlers and is
01:24 uncharted territory for many." So uncharted is this territory that doctors have advised
01:28 Orton to not wrestle again, saying, "It isn't a good idea. However, Orton still
01:34 plans on it and is planning to make a return to the ring." Orton isn't clear to wrestle
01:38 but he has been training - not wrestling training because he can't take bumps - but apparently
01:42 has been lifting weight, and according to Fightful Select he is now huge as a result.
01:46 Giggity. Back to those rumours and reports that he could be returning soon and Fightful
01:49 say their sources have told them, "Randy Orton has not been factored into WWE creative
01:55 plans whatsoever." Adding, "Those we've spoken to say there hasn't been an extensive
01:59 conversation about what the plans will be for Orton." When asked about a Summerslam
02:04 appearance, Fightful were told to not count on it. We here at WrestleTalk continue to
02:08 wish the speediest of recoveries to Randall Keith Orton.
02:11 But sticking with his bromance partner for a moment, there seems to be some heat on Matt
02:16 Riddle. Riddle has had a string of controversies in the last couple of years - having a sexual
02:20 assault case filed against him, which was later dropped, as well as a drugs test failure
02:24 that delayed his scheduled Clash at the Castle match against Seth Rollins, and a second failure
02:28 that sent him to rehab late last year. Riddle himself said on Twitter that certain people
02:33 aren't happy about his relationship with adult film star Misha Montana. But Riddle
02:37 has been steadily featured on television since his return, getting involved with the tag
02:41 team champions Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in their quest against the Bloodline, and recently
02:46 challenging Gunther for the IC title at Money in the Bank. Which is why his clean loss to
02:50 professional coat twirler Ludwig Kaiser on this week's episode of Raw took a few people
02:55 by surprise. And speaking about that result, Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio noted,
02:59 "There could be some internal heat on Matt Riddle." Meltzer said they decided long
03:04 ago for whatever reason - and there are good reasons Riddle seems to get in trouble too
03:08 often - they decided he's not the guy they're going to build around or anything. But they've
03:13 kept him stronger than losing clean to Kaiser. But he did here. When I saw that I was like,
03:18 "Man, he's lower than I thought he was in their minds."
03:21 Now this isn't an official "report" that Matt Riddle has heat, Meltzer's speculating
03:26 based on information he's heard. But if you listen to the tape go back and to the
03:30 left you will hear him do that "pause because I'm about to say something I'm not supposed
03:35 to" thing that he often does. So for the official score on this one, let's head on
03:39 over to our own Heat Magnet and Weather Reporter, Helen Temperature, to check the heat scale.
03:44 As I often ask at a restaurant, "Table for one please." There isn't much at all on
03:50 the heat scale today. Do you often eat alone, Helen?
03:56 Yes. I'm a very loud eater. I scream between every bite.
04:02 Must be tough for you on the dating scene, Helen.
04:05 I don't need dates. I only need my three person sharing platter and a pint of Horlicks
04:11 to get me to sleep.
04:14 Thank you, Helen.
04:15 Over to AEW now and I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jeff Jarrett in London this
04:19 past Monday to talk about the upcoming Wembley show All In, which is not that far off from
04:24 breaking the all-time attendance record for a wrestling event - not counting Collision
04:29 in Korea - for obvious reasons. The full interview will be released this coming Friday and the
04:34 rest of the podcast down, so make sure you go and subscribe to that. But I want to share
04:37 this clip where I got to ask him about his theme song and the very odd lyric "He ain't
04:42 dead, he is Jeff." It's a weird line, but here's what Jeff had to say about it.
04:48 Can I give you a little inside track?
04:49 Absolutely, I would.
04:50 In writing that song, I think the "He ain't dead, he ain't the Rock," did you ever hear
04:56 that version of it?
04:58 Oh, yes. That's really rung a bell with me, actually. I completely forgot about that.
05:00 I think that was out, and the Rock is trademarked. So I think we went back in.
05:06 And he's not the only one talking about entrance theme songs, perhaps, as CM Punk took to Instagram
05:10 last night to tease the return of an old favourite. Did I mention I'm on Instagram now? I don't
05:18 follow CM Punk, but you can follow me if you want.
05:23 Punk has been using Living Colour's cult of personality since his WWE return in 2011.
05:28 It was a song that was synonymous with him before his time in WWE and became his anthem
05:32 once again when he joined AEW in 2021. But in his first run with WWE, he used This Fire
05:38 Burns by Killswitch Engage - which fun fact, was originally slated for Randy Orton before
05:43 it was given to Punk.
05:44 Fans have been clamouring for Punk to bring this theme back because it's nostalgic to
05:48 them, and nostalgia is a hell of a drug - which is ironic given the subject matter - and Punk
05:54 has now potentially teased the return of that song, by posting an image on Instagram of
05:59 him making his entrance on Collision with This Fire Burns as the tag song. Now of course,
06:04 this doesn't mean much of anything really, but like all things with Punk, you never can
06:10 tell.
06:11 What you can tell is the ratings for Collision this week were a vast improvement on what
06:14 has come before it, as the show drew 739,000 viewers - the highest number for the show
06:20 since the debut episode. The episode was headlined by MJF and Adam Cole challenging
06:24 FTR for the tag titles, and Dave Meltzer has said on Twitter that he attributes that match
06:28 to much of Collision's ratings success. He originally said it was actually, originally
06:32 - this is hilarious - he originally wrote that it was Rampage that did those numbers,
06:36 but then he corrected himself. What sort of idiot makes a mistake online?
06:42 Not only is this overall figure up by nearly 20% from last week, the all-important 18-49
06:53 demo was up by over 50%. In fact, the male 18-34 demo was - get this - up over 180%.
07:03 It wasn't terrible news for Monday Night Raw either, as although the overall viewership
07:12 was down from the previous week, it drew an average of 1.76 million viewers. The show
07:17 peaked in its second hour with the Brock Lesnar and Cody Rhodes angle, and in an odd change
07:22 of pace the third hour - headlined by Seth Rollins and Sami Zayn taking on The Judgment
07:25 Day - drew more viewers than the first hour with Logan Paul opening the broadcast. But
07:31 it's Wednesday, you know what that means, it's time for my NXT One Minute One Take.
07:36 Now I've had a two week break from this so I might be a little bit rusty and as we all
07:41 know, I was excellent at it before, so let's see how I get on after this. Okay, pause you
07:48 there. Right, come on Luke O, you've got this.
07:50 Put your teeth in. Put your teeth in. The Human Torch was denied a bank loan. Let's
07:58 do this. 3, 2, 1, let's go.
08:02 The show opened with a video recap of Great American Bash and Gallus attacked The Family
08:06 in shock the NXT parking lot which set up a six man tag for later on. Jaycee Jayne promised
08:10 to beat Lyra Valkyria and then didn't when she lost to Lyra Valkyria. Trick Williams
08:14 wants to go alone from Carmelo Hayes. Dominic Mysterio set up a title match with Dragon
08:17 Lee for next week with Lee revealing that Rey Mysterio will be in his corner because
08:20 all of that main roster integration has been great ratings success, and there was a backstage
08:24 segment to set up a tag match of Hayes and Wes Lee taking on Noam Dar and Oro Mensah.
08:29 Another backstage segment with Baron Corbin and Chase Hughes set up a match between Corbs
08:32 and Andre Chasor later on. I don't know why I paused. I'm smeg.
08:36 Dijak beat Eddie Thorpe and Elektra Lopez. Dijak beat Eddie Thorpe and Elektra Lopez
08:40 and Lola Weiss beat Yelissa Leon and Valentina Feroz. Both matches were designed to start
08:45 new rivalries. Dar and Mensah beat Lee and Hayes which came because Lee accidentally
08:49 hit his finish on Hayes. Looks like that's the next challenge for Bron Ervis title.
08:52 Bron break a cut from Von Wagner. Another backstage segment with Dom and Rhea set up
08:54 a match between Axiom and Moonstar Ferrari for next week. Come on.
08:58 Corbin pinned Andre James with the end of days. We've got a video package for Oksan
09:00 Perez. There's a set up of a match between Noam Dar and Tyler Bate. There was a silly
09:02 comedy segment with Schism and the Creed Brothers that went way longer than you think. Cora J
09:05 said she's leaving NXT. And the main roster integration continues when Santos and Escobar
09:09 team with the family to beat Gallus in the main event.
09:12 Too much happens on NXT. Nailed it. Please go and watch yesterday's video while I check
09:20 my cool new Instagram followers.
