Today AD is welcomed by John Legend and Chrissy Teigen to tour their loving family home in Beverly Hills. The superstar couple are no strangers to moving house as the chapters of their lives change, this time around wanting a magical space for their kids to grow up. John and Chrissy enlisted AD100 designer, Jake Arnold, working in tandem as he paired his signature earthy palette with their desire for bright pops of color. Together they designed an open space full of warmth with no shortage of spots for family time during their latest stage of life. “Every house we’ve ever had reflects the moment we were in in our lives, like chapters in a book,” Teigen avers. “We were attracted to this place because of its lightness and airiness. We love how open it feels, and how it’s so connected to the outdoors. We wanted to create something magical, especially for the kids,”

00:00 (laughs)
00:01 - Hello, AD.
00:02 - Hello, AD.
00:04 - I'm John Legend.
00:05 - I'm Chrissy Teigen.
00:07 - Welcome to our home.
00:08 - Welcome.
00:09 (laughs)
00:09 (upbeat music)
00:12 - Our designer's name is Jake Arnold.
00:24 - We love him.
00:24 - Sometimes people who are really creative
00:26 and good at the creative stuff
00:28 aren't good at the business side of things,
00:30 but I feel like Jake, Jake is the,
00:33 hi Pearl.
00:34 - Sorry, hi Pearl.
00:36 Hi my love.
00:36 - You can sit.
00:37 - This is my baby Pearl.
00:38 - She likes to cuddle with mama on the couch.
00:40 - She's insane, but she loves to cuddle.
00:41 This is my Instagram story room.
00:43 Everyone's always like, you never leave this couch.
00:46 - We live here.
00:47 This is the living room.
00:48 You know, and some people,
00:49 their living room is more like a showpiece
00:52 and they spend all the time in the den or the family room,
00:55 but we're actually in the living room quite a lot.
00:57 We sit here and watch reality TV.
00:59 We cook right there in the kitchen.
01:01 And since the kitchen and the living room are so close,
01:03 I think that's why we spend so much time here
01:05 'cause we're always cooking.
01:06 She likes to be in the same space as our guests,
01:08 same space as the family.
01:10 - Which is why we have three or four different versions
01:13 of these cushions because yeah,
01:16 basically my butt leaves a mark for long enough
01:18 and the dogs don't help and the babies spit up
01:22 and the kids jumping back and forth.
01:23 I will say like, this is a very kid-proof house.
01:27 People are always scared to bring their kids over.
01:28 They're like, no, they're gonna jump on everything.
01:30 I'm like, look at this, it's chaos.
01:32 Hey!
01:32 - Our living room is very lived in.
01:34 - And we actually use some outdoor fabrics
01:36 for our indoor couches.
01:38 - Some of our fabrics are outdoor because they are tougher
01:40 and they can take more crap that our kids put on it.
01:43 - And piss, dog piss.
01:45 - Yes, that too.
01:46 - It's a lot of dog piss here.
01:47 [laughing]
01:49 - So our TV cabinet is pretty cool.
01:51 It stays open most of the time
01:52 because we're usually watching TV in this room.
01:55 But the TV comes out, watch this.
01:57 - Look at that.
01:58 - And then you can swivel it to face the living room more
02:00 or face the kitchen more.
02:02 So if Chrissy wants to watch "Real Housewives"
02:04 and make dinner, then we can turn it toward the kitchen.
02:08 - You mean watch "The New York Times"?
02:10 - You mean watch "Reader's Digest"?
02:13 [laughing]
02:14 [upbeat music]
02:17 We're in the kitchen!
02:21 We are in the heartbeat of our home.
02:23 Obviously we spend so much time in here.
02:26 You can watch TV from here.
02:27 This is a fully functional working kitchen.
02:30 I think when we go to other people's homes,
02:33 we're like, "Oh my God, you can tell
02:34 "when they don't use it."
02:35 Or you stay at an Airbnb or something,
02:36 you're like, "Oh, these people don't use their kitchen."
02:38 We really use the shit out of this kitchen.
02:41 Honestly, we have all four ovens going quite often.
02:43 - Yeah, so we actually have two down here,
02:46 two over there, and then we have a microwave over there
02:50 and an espresso machine.
02:51 We are literally using all these things all the time.
02:54 We're doing big meals, having friends over.
02:57 We have Thanksgiving here, Christmas here.
03:00 We do everything.
03:01 We always wanted to have a home
03:03 where it would be like an open door
03:05 for our friends and family.
03:06 - What we love about it too is it's not really precious.
03:09 This can take such a beating.
03:11 I mean, we normally have a cutting board on here
03:14 that everyone sees my kids on top of.
03:17 All these burners going.
03:18 I will say it has a very sensitive fire alarm.
03:22 - Oh yeah, our smoke alarm is sensitive.
03:24 - For anything.
03:25 - So we had to make sure this hood--
03:26 - Keeps us safe, though.
03:27 - It was good because it's trying to keep us safe,
03:29 I understand, but I wish it would try a little less.
03:32 - It's going too hard.
03:33 - Try a little less.
03:34 - Have some faith in us that we would wake up.
03:36 [laughing]
03:37 [upbeat music]
03:39 - So we're in the piano bar.
03:42 This is the room where sometimes I'll write music.
03:46 Sometimes Luna will take piano lessons.
03:48 The chandelier was designed by Allison Berger.
03:51 It has my lyrics from my first couple albums
03:55 etched in those wine glasses up there.
03:57 And then we have a record player
03:58 that's in this beautiful gold cabinet.
04:01 There's also actually a TV in there.
04:03 LG, like, roll up TV.
04:06 [laughing]
04:07 - We're a TV household.
04:08 We have a TV in every room.
04:09 - We have TVs everywhere.
04:11 And then of course we have some of our awards up here.
04:13 Chrissy's Glamour Woman of the Year,
04:17 my Grammy Emmy Oscar Tony things,
04:21 Chrissy's Mac and Cheese Award.
04:24 - This is, to me this is the--
04:25 - Yeah, that was what we did
04:26 during our first holiday special we did together.
04:28 - Oh, I also got a Glammy Award
04:31 for the best chair sitter from my glam squad
04:34 because I never move.
04:37 I'm just really good at getting my hair and makeup done.
04:40 [laughing]
04:41 [upbeat music]
04:43 [upbeat music]
04:46 [upbeat music]
04:48 [upbeat music]
04:59 [upbeat music]
05:08 [upbeat music]
05:11 - I can't believe I get to play this.
05:17 - It's new, I just made it up for this.
05:20 - Oh my God.
05:21 [upbeat music]
05:24 - We sometimes stay at Kelly Wurster's house.
05:28 She's a great designer and she has a Malibu house
05:32 and it has a tree, like, right in the living room,
05:35 kitchen area and we were like,
05:37 we want a tree inside our house too.
05:39 So this tree actually is an olive tree
05:41 that used to be alive, for real, but it's not alive now.
05:45 And so we like literally dug six feet deep,
05:48 put the roots down, put this tree here, not ourselves.
05:52 And it has silk leaves that don't fall down,
05:55 they're attached to the tree
05:56 and it still looks and feels real, but it's not alive.
06:01 [laughing]
06:02 It was formerly alive.
06:04 - We embalmed it.
06:05 - We embalmed it, basically.
06:06 [laughing]
06:07 Around it, we have this beautiful--
06:09 - This is a custom designed kind of gold ring
06:12 around the tree.
06:13 - It's our Christmas tree during Christmas time,
06:15 so we put the presents underneath it here.
06:17 The kids will cut out little shapes
06:19 and we'll hang it from the leaves
06:20 and we'll put twinkling lights in it around the holidays
06:23 and it's just such a centerpiece, obviously.
06:25 It just makes us feel more connected to the earth
06:28 and just to like have it kind of flow
06:30 from inside to outside is beautiful.
06:32 [upbeat music]
06:36 - So now we're in the dining room, which not really a room,
06:40 it's just all part of the great room,
06:41 but this is where we would have formal dining,
06:43 but we almost never have formal dining.
06:45 - Never.
06:46 Actually, my Girl Scouts sit here.
06:48 - The Girl Scouts sit here.
06:49 - The Girl Scouts.
06:50 - Chris is a Girl Scout troop leader, believe it or not.
06:52 Yes, she is.
06:53 And she's so good at it.
06:55 She's like always coming up with cool ideas
06:57 for the Girl Scouts and crafts.
06:58 - I think aside from Thanksgiving,
06:59 the only thing I've done here
07:00 is have my Girl Scouts gathered around it
07:03 and making dirt cups.
07:04 - Yeah, but this table is just beautiful.
07:07 It's the heaviest table you could possibly imagine.
07:09 It takes like an army to move it.
07:13 - A plane.
07:14 - So we're never gonna move it after this.
07:16 Like it's just gonna stay here forever.
07:18 This used to actually be a full wall with a fireplace
07:22 and we didn't like it.
07:24 The fireplace felt like a little too fake and cheesy.
07:26 We decided to make it two pillars instead.
07:29 And we put this beautiful, based on Chrissy's idea,
07:32 put this beautiful art installation.
07:34 - I did ketamine and I basically was like
07:39 therapeutic ketamine.
07:40 - Yes.
07:41 - At therapy.
07:42 - Doctor supervised.
07:43 - Doctor supervised.
07:44 And I came home and I was like,
07:45 wouldn't it be so amazing
07:46 if we had two beautiful butterfly wings
07:49 that we're holding our house up.
07:51 So this is Jake's interpretation of the butterfly wings.
07:55 - They're kind of like butterflies, flowers,
07:57 but each wing slash pedal was installed one by one.
08:03 - Hand painted each one.
08:05 Like if you touch them, they move a little bit.
08:07 I mean, they're so delicate
08:09 and somehow they haven't been hurt yet at all.
08:12 - I think it 'cause our kids can't really reach them
08:14 that well.
08:15 - Yeah, not yet.
08:15 - Not yet.
08:16 (upbeat music)
08:19 This is Luna's bedroom guys.
08:21 And how cool is this bedroom?
08:23 We just kind of gave Jake some vague notes
08:27 about how we wanted the kids' rooms to look.
08:29 And when he came back with drawings
08:32 of like what they were actually gonna look like,
08:34 I was like, this is beyond anyone's wildest dreams
08:37 of what their bedroom should look like.
08:39 She has a slide that she goes both up and down.
08:41 - Yes, mostly up these days.
08:43 - Yeah.
08:44 - A little kitchen with her easy bake oven,
08:46 a little swinging couch.
08:48 She has a little beautiful nook up here
08:51 that her and Miles will have little sleepovers in.
08:53 That's the bed where many
08:55 and Amelia Bedelia book are read.
08:57 - Yeah, we read a lot of stories over there.
08:59 - And then we put up all those little,
09:01 you know, those star stickers,
09:02 the glow in the dark stickers and stuff together.
09:05 - One, two, three.
09:06 (laughing)
09:08 (upbeat music)
09:11 - Say, hey guys, this is my room.
09:14 - Hey guys, this is my room.
09:16 - Miles loves cars if you can't tell.
09:19 The centerpiece is of course the Jeep bunk bed.
09:22 And then Miles has like a cave over here we can read.
09:27 And then it has just a whole play area up here too.
09:32 - There's a little climbing wall in the corner
09:34 where he can climb up that way
09:35 to get up on the second little story
09:37 of his nook and his cave.
09:39 Good storage for all of his dinosaurs.
09:41 So many dinosaurs.
09:44 - And giraffes.
09:45 - They love looking down from the net that's up here.
09:48 And then you can see the kids when they come up on top here.
09:51 - Jake did a good job.
09:52 - Jake did a good job, he said.
09:55 (laughing)
09:56 - I think the headline of this story is,
09:59 Jake did a good job.
10:01 (laughing)
10:02 - Miles, that was so sweet.
10:05 (upbeat music)
10:07 - Okay, so we're in the theater now
10:10 and we actually don't watch a lot in here,
10:13 but the kids do.
10:13 They watch like Scooby-Doo in here.
10:16 And then sometimes we'll have like a movie night in here.
10:18 - 'Cause we like to jump in.
10:20 - Yeah, it's really easy place to jump and not get hurt.
10:24 And Miles loves it, look at him.
10:25 What I love about this room is it's lush,
10:27 it's feminine, it's beautiful.
10:30 - And it's stylish too.
10:31 - It's stylish, it's cool, we like to be in here.
10:33 It's just a beautiful, beautiful room.
10:34 - We normally have a nacho machine here.
10:36 Can you show them the cheese?
10:37 - I do have the cheese, actually.
10:40 - We have cheese, we have--
10:43 - We have bags of cheese.
10:43 - Manufactured cheese.
10:45 - So much manufactured cheese for it.
10:48 So if you--
10:49 - 100% organic.
10:50 - You stick the tube in the cheese bag,
10:52 pop it in the warmer, hit the button.
10:55 (imitates machine)
10:56 The cheese comes out.
10:57 I even bought, actually, sour belts, Swedish fish,
11:01 everything's underneath here.
11:02 Even though we have all this,
11:04 our kids are really good about not wanting it.
11:07 - Not overindulging, like they don't come
11:09 and ask us for candy all the time.
11:11 They're good about it.
11:12 And they eat their normal meal.
11:14 Miles still doesn't eat vegetables,
11:15 but we're working on it.
11:17 - One day, buddy.
11:17 - One day. - One day.
11:18 - One day.
11:19 (upbeat music)
11:24 - So now we're in the family room.
11:26 And this room is where,
11:28 if we're gonna have a big group over
11:30 to watch anything that we wanna watch,
11:31 whether it's like the big game,
11:34 the big reality show finale.
11:35 - I mean, just last night,
11:35 we had about 40 people crammed in here,
11:37 on the couch, on the floor,
11:39 pizza all over the table.
11:41 It makes me so happy to see everybody
11:42 gathered around one space.
11:43 - We wanted this space just to be cozy.
11:47 You see this massive couch.
11:49 It just looks welcoming.
11:51 And so we just get in here, it's really casual.
11:53 Everything's low to the ground.
11:55 And we just hang out in here.
11:57 - I will say this couch was creamed
11:59 just a couple months ago,
12:00 which we loved,
12:01 but I thought it was a little too clean looking.
12:04 We wanted to bring a little like funk into the house
12:07 and a little pattern action and character and fun.
12:10 And anything that comes out of this.
12:12 I mean, we've spilled red wine,
12:14 we have spilled everything.
12:15 - It's a very durable fabric.
12:17 (laughing)
12:18 And we love the pillows.
12:20 Oh my God, these pillows are so gorgeous.
12:22 This print, Jake picked this out and showed it to us.
12:25 And we were like, yes, that's the one.
12:27 How much Bravo is watching here?
12:28 - I'm not kidding.
12:29 Not joking.
12:31 So if I wake up at nine,
12:32 I guess nine to like when I go to bed, 10,
12:34 we just, it's always playing in the background.
12:38 - It's part of the like tapestry of the home,
12:40 like the fabric of the home.
12:42 It's part of our background.
12:44 It's always happening.
12:45 - Yeah, the kids see it and they hear it.
12:47 And they know that--
12:48 - Mommy's watching her Bravo.
12:49 - Mommy's watching her Bravo
12:51 and you shouldn't fight like this.
12:53 (laughing)
12:54 They say this fighting isn't good.
12:55 - Yes, don't be like them.
12:56 - It's a teaching tool.
12:57 [upbeat music]
13:00 - This is the most magical powder room I can imagine.
13:03 - It's so beautiful.
13:04 - It's so beautiful.
13:05 It's all the same stone all throughout.
13:07 So the sink, the walls, everything,
13:10 it's just all this beautiful stone.
13:12 These sconces are vintage and it's a vibe in here.
13:17 Don't you want to move into this powder room?
13:19 - There's no better place to take a shit.
13:20 - Mm-hmm.
13:21 - Just really isn't.
13:22 - Yeah.
13:23 This is where the magic happens.
13:24 - Yeah.
13:25 [upbeat music]
13:28 - Okay, now we're in the backyard.
13:32 We've got a pool.
13:34 We've got miles.
13:36 We've got AstroTurf.
13:38 We got a water slide over there.
13:40 A little play structure for the kids.
13:41 - AstroTurf?
13:42 No one says AstroTurf.
13:44 - People that go out watching football,
13:46 that was like what they called it.
13:48 - We have turf.
13:49 It gets really, really hot back here.
13:51 When the sun is up,
13:52 I don't even know the upkeep it would take to take grass.
13:55 Plus, we have so many animals,
13:57 so it would just be a lot.
13:58 And we discovered that it's much easier to maintain turf.
14:02 - We have a little garden back here.
14:05 We have barbecue over there.
14:06 So if we were having a party,
14:08 obviously the party flows in and out.
14:10 So it's in the living room, but it's out here too.
14:12 When we have big game parties, Super Bowl parties,
14:14 the water slide is fun.
14:16 It's a hit with the kids.
14:18 [upbeat music]
14:20 - So this is where we sleep.
14:23 This is where--
14:25 - John on the couch.
14:26 [laughing]
14:27 - If I'm in trouble, this is where I sleep.
14:29 - Oh, please.
14:31 It's such a joke amongst married people,
14:33 but we have never done a casting.
14:34 - It's like a sitcom trope.
14:36 - If anything, I used to book a room with a Bowery.
14:38 - Hey.
14:39 [laughing]
14:39 In New York, yes.
14:41 I'm booking a room with a Bowery.
14:42 - I'm like out of here.
14:43 I don't do the couch.
14:44 [laughing]
14:45 Not anymore.
14:46 This is actually my therapy area.
14:48 [laughing]
14:49 So my therapist comes in twice a week,
14:51 sits on this chair, and I lay here,
14:54 and it's exactly what you would imagine.
14:57 I lay here and just--
15:00 - Talk about life.
15:02 [laughing]
15:03 - Talk about life.
15:05 - So this room, obviously it's very warm and earth-tony,
15:10 and we just want it to feel super cozy and not too bright.
15:14 Everything muted and chill.
15:16 This table is actually really cool.
15:18 We've had this table since our first place we did with AD.
15:21 - Love that home so much.
15:23 It was like our little--
15:24 - It was our little three-bedroom oasis,
15:27 and this is one of the only pieces
15:29 that is still with us from that home.
15:33 - Love that house.
15:34 [upbeat music]
15:37 This is our bathroom.
15:39 - Chrissy likes to do bath time with the kids.
15:41 - I do bath time with the kids.
15:42 I don't do solo baths.
15:43 There is a TV in here, and so if I must,
15:46 there's a TV everywhere, I'm telling you.
15:48 If I must, I will sit maybe five, 10 minutes,
15:51 quick rinse, watch Bravo.
15:53 But me and all the kids will pile in here.
15:55 They love doing a family bath with me.
15:58 And we sit in here, we do a big bubble bath.
16:00 Huh, Miles?
16:01 How much do you love bath?
16:02 You love baths so much.
16:03 - He loves bath time with Mama especially.
16:05 - He brings all of his cars.
16:06 What else?
16:07 Dinosaurs.
16:08 - And dinosaurs.
16:09 - Yeah.
16:10 [laughing]
16:11 Into the bathtub.
16:11 - Our shower's great.
16:12 - Good pressure.
16:13 - Good pressure.
16:14 - That's all you need.
16:15 - Yes.
16:16 - Really, having a great shower is all about pressure.
16:17 In this space where we are now,
16:19 there was both a his and hers bathroom
16:22 and a his and hers closet.
16:24 We thought that was a little redundant,
16:26 and so we did really big closet together,
16:29 and then one nice size bathroom together.
16:32 We don't need to be separated.
16:34 It feels very like Victorian or something.
16:36 [laughing]
16:38 [upbeat music]
16:41 [upbeat music]
16:43 - Okay, AD, I think we got some TV to watch,
16:49 a robe to put on.
16:51 You can go home.
16:52 - Bye, sorry.
