00:00 The legend of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:03 It's one of the few mysteries we still can't solve.
00:06 Let's rewind back about 600 years.
00:09 The story begins with an Italian man.
00:13 He wanted to sail across the ocean to reach Asia, a continent rich with spices, silk,
00:18 minerals, you know, that kind of stuff.
00:20 Getting there by land would take ridiculously long, so he figured, "Hey, why not to build
00:25 some sturdy ships, gather a couple of sailors and set off to Asia?
00:30 What could go wrong?"
00:32 That man was Christopher Columbus, by the way.
00:35 In 1492, with a little help from Spain's royal family, he embarked on his journey.
00:41 Everything was going well, I mean, apart from totally going the wrong way.
00:45 But as he got to the end of his voyage, he noticed something very strange.
00:50 He didn't know it at the time, but he was sailing through the infamous Bermuda Triangle.
00:55 The BT, the point of no return, the scary place between Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Florida.
01:02 There are loads of stories of ships, boats, and planes disappearing into this mysterious
01:07 realm.
01:08 Some were found years later, and some disappeared off the face of the earth, lying undiscovered
01:14 at the bottom of the ocean.
01:16 Maybe.
01:17 We know one thing for sure, we have no clue what's going on over there.
01:22 People have been trying to figure it out for years, but nothing, zip, nada.
01:28 So what was it that Christopher Columbus saw that fateful evening?
01:32 What freaked him out so bad?
01:34 According to his logs, Columbus saw a huge flash in the sky.
01:38 I don't care how tough you are, if you're sailing around with no clue where you are,
01:43 and then you see a massive flash right in front of you, you'd find me hiding below deck,
01:48 chewing on a lemon or something.
01:51 That's not the only sea mystery out there, not by a long shot.
01:55 Heard of the Kraken?
01:56 A giant squid that can swallow a whole ship?
01:59 No?
02:00 You're lucky.
02:01 Imagine cruising on a ship, wind in your hair, hands on your hips, like, you know, those
02:06 old pirate movies.
02:07 Then a huge squid creeps up on you from deep down in the cold, dark water.
02:12 It wraps its tentacles around the ship and drags the whole thing to the bottom of the
02:16 ocean.
02:17 Good thing you packed a life raft.
02:20 How about a colossal sea serpent chasing your boat at full speed looking for a midday snack?
02:26 That thing is called a leviathan, and you better hope it's not real.
02:30 Or sirens, mean but beautiful creatures of the sea.
02:35 They like to hang out on rocks and sing karaoke.
02:39 Their magical voices attract sailors who sail their ships right into the sharp rocks.
02:44 Now mermaids, on the other hand, totally awesome.
02:47 They like karaoke too, but they're not into the whole ship-smashing thing.
02:52 Good old mermaids.
02:53 They're real, right?
02:56 And let's not forget peg-legged pirates.
02:58 Arr!
02:59 Lootin', raidin', sayin' arr every two seconds.
03:03 Arr!
03:04 What else do those guys do all day?
03:06 So back to our Italian friend, Columbus.
03:09 Maybe he just saw a thunderstorm.
03:11 Duh!
03:12 Why didn't he think of that?
03:14 Well, I'm not 600 years old, and I wasn't there.
03:17 How on earth would I know?
03:19 Weird thing is, he never mentioned any huge waves or heavy rain.
03:23 No strong winds either.
03:25 Just a single flash in the sky.
03:27 Maybe some dolphins were setting off fireworks or something.
03:31 After the flash, Columbus wrote that his compass needle started dancing all over the place.
03:37 This keeps getting weirder and weirder.
03:39 His report ends with a friendly turtle with sunglasses jumping out of the water, pushing
03:44 the three ships to shore, and everyone went out to get hot dogs.
03:48 Only kidding.
03:49 So what happened?
03:51 Scientists now think they've got the answer.
03:54 Drumroll!
03:55 Arr!
03:56 An asteroid crashed into the ocean.
03:59 Case closed.
04:01 But wait, what about that stuff with the compass?
04:04 What does that have to do with an asteroid?
04:06 Asteroids come in all different shapes and sizes, but they're like chocolate eggs.
04:10 The best parts on the inside.
04:12 They're packed full of minerals and metals worth trillions of dollars.
04:17 Scientists are even trying to figure out how to land on a big one and mine it.
04:21 It'd have to be a really big one.
04:23 I'm talking about an asteroid the size of Rhode Island.
04:26 Why?
04:27 Because chances are, it'd have a magnetic field around it, making it way easier to land
04:32 on.
04:33 Scientists think that the magnetic fields around some asteroids can last for millions
04:37 of years.
04:39 Mystery solved.
04:40 Maybe.
04:41 Captain Christopher Columbus's compass went cuckoo crazy because of an asteroid crashing
04:47 right in front of him.
04:49 That actually might explain some other strange Bermuda tales.
04:54 The voyage started just like any other.
04:56 The cargo ship SS Cotopaxi is making another journey to Havana, Cuba to deliver coal.
05:02 It's November 29, 1925.
05:06 For Captain Meyer and his crew, leaving Charleston Port, South Carolina, it will be the last
05:12 trip the ship ever makes.
05:14 Its route ran through the Bermuda Triangle.
05:17 Two days into the trip, the Cotopaxi sent out a distress signal.
05:21 It had got caught up in a strong tropical storm and turned over on its side.
05:26 The wind was very strong, and there was powerful lightning as well.
05:31 Rain gradually filled the ship's hold.
05:33 Then there was a bright white flash, and the ship disappeared without a trace.
05:39 Later its wreckage was found in the Gobi Desert, which is in a completely different part of
05:44 the world.
05:46 All 32 crew members, including the captain, were missing.
05:50 Of course, the part about the Gobi Desert is fictional.
05:54 For one of his movies, Steven Spielberg came up with the idea that the ship was moved there
05:58 by aliens.
05:59 Still, in real life, the ship was never found, and its crew really did disappear.
06:06 It was officially declared missing a month afterward, and nobody could find the wreck.
06:13 It seems like a classic case of mysterious things going on in the Bermuda Triangle.
06:19 But most mysteries are solved sooner or later.
06:22 In 2020, the Cotopaxi was found.
06:25 A man named Michael Barnett had moved to Florida to study shipwrecks off the coast.
06:31 One wreck in particular really caught his attention.
06:34 It was much larger than the others, and the locals called it the "Bear Wreck."
06:39 It was about 40 miles from St. Augustine in northern Florida, but no one had ever managed
06:44 to identify the rusty hull.
06:46 So Michael started to do some detective work.
06:50 He measured the size of the shipwreck and started working through all the information
06:54 he could find.
06:55 He researched hundreds of old newspapers, leafed through insurance records, and looked
07:00 at artifacts found on the wreck.
07:03 After hundreds of hours of hard work, Michael was sure it was the Cotopaxi.
07:08 But a few years before, there had been a rumor that the same ship had been found off the
07:13 coast of Cuba.
07:15 The Coast Guard found the wreck of a cargo ship about the same size that looked a lot
07:19 like the one lost in 1925.
07:22 Michael was sure they were wrong, so he teamed up with some science journalists and kept
07:27 investigating.
07:28 Soon, they discovered something that seemed to confirm Michael's belief.
07:33 Divers found brass valves with the letters "SV" on them in the wreckage of the ship.
07:38 Michael suggested these initials referred to Scott Valve Manufacturing Company.
07:43 The headquarters of this company was in Michigan, not far from where the Cotopaxi had been built.
07:49 The company had probably supplied parts for the Cotopaxi.
07:53 So the puzzle seemed to be solved.
07:56 The bear wreck was really the missing cargo ship.
08:00 But Michael still needed to work out why the ship had sunk.
08:03 Did something mysterious really happen to the Cotopaxi in the Bermuda Triangle?
08:08 Later, Michael found the testimony of the ship's carpenter among some old papers.
08:14 The carpenter claimed that the hatches covering the coal on the ship had been in a terrible
08:18 condition before it sank.
08:21 Repair work on the covers wasn't finished before the crew got the order to sail to Cuba.
08:26 So if the hatch covers were still broken during the trip, water could've easily gotten on
08:32 board.
08:33 This water probably flooded the hull during the tropical storm.
08:37 This was the real reason why the Cotopaxi went down.
08:41 There was really nothing mysterious about it.
08:43 It was just a mistake made by ordinary people.
08:47 But this is just one example out of dozens, or even hundreds, where ships and planes have
08:53 gone missing in the Bermuda Triangle.
08:55 We still can't explain some of these incidents.
08:58 It seems like there really is something weird going on there.
09:03 One of these strange events happened in 1948.
09:07 A passenger jet was headed for Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
09:11 It disappeared in the same area as the Cotopaxi.
09:15 The 32 people on board vanished without a trace.
09:19 The weather was clear throughout the flight, but experts think that when the plane was
09:24 about 50 miles from the coast, it could've been hit by a strong wind that knocked it
09:29 off course.
09:30 Years later, a similar plane was found in the area of the Bermuda Triangle.
09:35 But because no one could work out the registration, it was impossible to say for sure if it was
09:40 the same one.
09:43 Something even stranger occurred not long before, in 1945.
09:48 Five planes went missing all at the same time.
09:51 Some trainee pilots were practicing their navigation skills.
09:55 But when they'd finished, it seems they couldn't find their way back home and disappeared.
10:00 Many people assume they just ran out of fuel.
10:03 This seems likely, but still, the circumstances were really strange.
10:08 The trainees were being supervised by an experienced pilot who had 2,500 hours of flight time.
10:15 He would never have let a group of newbie pilots get that far away from their base.
10:20 Even now, people still debate what could've happened.
10:23 Some insist the pilots ran into something supernatural out there in the Bermuda Triangle.
10:29 But who knows?
10:31 The airplane involved was a Beechcraft Bonanza single-engine aircraft.
10:36 On board, pilot Bruce Gurnon had two passengers, his father and business partner.
10:42 They took off from Andros Island in the Bahamas and headed northwest for the Florida coast.
10:48 It was December 4, 1970.
10:51 If you draw up a map, trace a line connecting the island of Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Miami,
10:57 and back to Bermuda, what do you get?
10:59 Yes, it's a triangle, a sinister polygon known for mysteriously swallowing over 2,000
11:06 ships and 200 aircraft over the centuries.
11:10 Bruce Gurnon's plane was within its hungry grasp.
11:14 But this was a typical flight Bruce had made dozens of times before.
11:18 The trip usually took about an hour and a half, with no hiccups or mysterious phenomena
11:23 whatsoever.
11:25 The men were no more concerned than you would be during your daily commute to work.
11:29 Oh, but this time would be different.
11:32 They would face very unusual circumstances indeed.
11:36 Bruce took off and started gaining altitude.
11:40 Strange things started happening right from the get-go.
11:43 At an altitude of about 1,000 feet, he noticed a small cloud up ahead.
11:49 But it kept growing.
11:50 Not from the plane getting closer, this thing was actually getting bigger in size.
11:55 Bruce had to fly through it, and he came out the other end just fine.
12:00 Another mysterious cloud appeared at 11,500 feet.
12:04 This one was massive, and Bruce had no other choice but to fly through it too.
12:09 So he concentrated, took a deep breath, and in they went.
12:14 At that moment, it got dark as night all around the aircraft.
12:19 But a single sliver of sunshine got through.
12:22 But this wasn't a storm cloud, and it wasn't raining.
12:25 Bruce was starting to get worried, and then, bam, he saw flashes of white light.
12:31 They would appear and vanish quickly like lightning.
12:34 But this pilot knew this certainly was no lightning.
12:37 The flashes were so bright, they lit up the whole space around them.
12:42 Bruce kept flying for another 30 minutes, when he realized this was the same cloud he
12:47 had gone through earlier when he started to climb.
12:50 But now the cloud was cylindrical, and the plane was flying through its center.
12:55 It was about one mile wide and seemed endless.
12:59 Bruce thought he could never get out of that trap.
13:01 But a minute later, he saw light at the end of the tunnel.
13:05 He kept that yoke straight ahead.
13:07 He was almost out of this nightmare.
13:10 But all of a sudden, unexplainable things started happening again.
13:15 The walls of the cloud tunnel began to narrow.
13:18 They were closing in on the plane.
13:20 The navigational instruments started wigging out.
13:23 The compass was spinning by itself counterclockwise.
13:27 The electronic instruments were all malfunctioning.
13:30 It was like the plane was being operated by something else, or it was moving inside some
13:36 kind of current.
13:37 All of Bruce's attempts to take control were to no avail.
13:42 He kept flying through that tunnel, bound and determined to get out of this thing and
13:46 live to tell the tale.
13:48 The walls kept narrowing, smaller and smaller, wrapping like a vortex.
13:53 Bruce was running out of time.
13:55 He had to get out of this place fast.
13:57 The next 20 seconds were the most intense of his life.
14:01 But then, he burst out of this foggy trap.
14:05 As Bruce described later, he felt weightless for 5 seconds as his plane left the tunnel.
14:11 The clouds dispersed, and now the aircraft was in a grayish haze.
14:15 The men let out a big sigh of relief.
14:19 He immediately grabbed the radio and contacted ground control.
14:22 Bruce wanted them to determine his location.
14:25 But when the dispatcher looked at the green screen, his face became contorted with confusion.
14:31 Bruce's plane wasn't on the radar.
14:34 It was as if the thing was invisible.
14:37 But then, the dispatcher said the aircraft was already in Miami airspace.
14:42 Bruce was utterly shocked by this information.
14:45 It just couldn't be true.
14:47 The distance the Beechcraft was supposed to cover was about 250 miles.
14:52 Remember, the whole trip usually took around 90 minutes.
14:56 But this time, it took just 47 minutes to get to the destination.
15:00 This model of aircraft can only cruise at about 180 miles per hour.
15:05 Do the math, and anyone would understand that this was physically impossible.
15:11 The dispatcher must have made a mistake.
15:13 But when the clouds parted, Bruce saw that he really was over Miami.
15:19 The plane landed safely, and it was time to try and solve this mystery.
15:24 So what happened on that flight?
15:26 Bruce checked the remaining fuel in his watch.
15:29 After a short calculation, he was only more confused.
15:33 The plane hadn't gone through the amount of fuel it should've.
15:37 Bruce couldn't have been wrong.
15:38 He was a very experienced pilot.
15:41 By his early 20s, he already had 600 hours of flight under his belt.
15:46 And he was all too familiar with this airspace he'd flown countless times.
15:51 All the evidence in hand seemed to indicate that Bruce's plane just skipped over almost
15:56 half the entire distance.
15:59 The man thought about this bizarre occurrence for a long time.
16:02 He even consulted with professors and experts.
16:05 But none of them could give an exact answer to what happened that day.
16:10 So he came up with his own theory, and even wrote a book about it.
16:14 Bruce thought it all came down to this electric fog with white flashes.
16:19 Others, however, theorized that dark energy was responsible for this time leap.
16:25 Yes, that same dark energy responsible for the expansion of the universe.
16:30 This energy could've curved time-space like a black hole, forming this strange tunnel.
16:36 Bruce accidentally hit it, but he was lucky to get out of there.
16:40 That's how he got into Miami airspace so fast.
16:43 But dark energy is just a theory attempting to explain the unexplainable.
16:49 To this day, there is no real answer for how Bruce was able to travel that distance in
16:54 such a short time.
16:56 But some details still can be explained.
16:59 Archive records show that 84 sunspots were recorded that day, as well as a huge solar
17:05 wind moving almost 440 miles per second.
17:09 This would cause disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere that could throw off the plane's
17:13 instruments and radars.
17:15 So Bruce's version that he was in an electronic fog could be right.
17:20 And about these weird clouds.
17:22 The thing is, they're pretty commonplace things in this area.
17:26 Clouds with low and high pressure are constantly colliding there.
17:30 The result?
17:31 Storm clouds.
17:32 That's it for today!
