00:00 Okay, it's also been stormy in places like Colorado
00:02 this week, but today, much less than the last couple of days,
00:06 meteorologist Tony Laubach joins us live
00:09 near Colorado Springs with more.
00:10 Tony, what's the story?
00:12 - Well, meteorologist Tony Laubach
00:18 is probably the reason we're not seeing as many storms today.
00:21 I actually decided to get out and track some of these
00:23 as the last couple of days have seen.
00:25 Reports anywhere from damaging winds, flipping trailers,
00:28 and knocking down trees in the town of Hugo
00:31 to rain up to two inches an hour in some of these storms.
00:35 You're looking behind me here.
00:36 This is looking to the south over Colorado Springs.
00:39 You kind of see the elevated base
00:41 of some showers that are moving through.
00:42 Some of the lightning out of that did trigger
00:44 a little fire earlier just outside of here.
00:47 Fortunately, though, crews were able to get on top of that
00:49 pretty quickly as some of that rain did help a little bit.
00:52 We'll show you some of that video
00:53 from here in Colorado Springs
00:55 as some of those showers came off the Pikes Peak region.
00:57 Again, not a lot of heavy rain or wind with it today,
01:00 but it has been something we have been tracking
01:02 pretty consistently pretty much since last weekend,
01:06 these off and on rain and storms.
01:08 We've been seeing a different kind of setup for us here.
01:10 It's been a lot drier than what we've been seeing more
01:14 in June and May.
01:15 So when those threats were hail and tornadoes,
01:18 now we're really more focused on lightning, damaging winds,
01:22 maybe a little bit of downpours with some of these storms
01:25 if that moisture can get down to the surface.
01:27 We've seen that in a couple of occasions.
01:29 We saw that yesterday, even at my house, Kevin,
01:32 but we haven't really seen much of that today.
01:33 Most of the storm activity has really been north of the
01:36 border up near Wyoming and Cheyenne.
01:38 We are starting to see some of those storms
01:40 filter a little bit down into Northern Colorado.
01:43 So I'm going to head my attention up that way.
01:44 Fortunately, that's my direction heading home,
01:47 but that could mean that we could be looking
01:48 at more heavy rain.
01:49 Maybe those storms lingering a little bit longer
01:51 into the evening along the front range
01:53 than we've seen the last couple of days.
01:55 But again, we're really expecting an uptick in storms
01:57 as we get into next week, Kevin,
01:59 when the monsoon moisture is really expected to ramp up
02:01 in this neck of the woods.
02:03 - You got it, Tony.
02:04 And you mentioned the heavy rain at your house.
02:06 I know you measured two and a half inches of rain per hour.
02:10 That was the rain rate at your house.
02:12 And I saw the video you sent to us here in AccuWeather.
02:15 It was pretty impressive.
02:16 So thanks a lot for your reporting out there.
02:18 Hunker down.
02:19 Next time you go out, maybe you'll get some better video.
02:21 And as always, stay safe.
