00:00 We're at the Mercury Prize 2023.
00:02 That feels good.
00:03 - Don't it just?
00:05 (laughing)
00:06 - Well, how does it feel to be nominated?
00:08 - Very good.
00:09 I'm having so much fun.
00:11 It's nice to see brilliant artists.
00:13 It's lovely to be amongst them.
00:15 It's amazing to be up for my second Mercury, a decade on.
00:20 I feel proud of myself.
00:23 - Mantle piece must be looking good.
00:25 - Yeah, my mum nicks all of them.
00:26 I'm gonna maybe bring them back.
00:28 Yeah.
00:29 - Well, each of the shortlisted records
00:31 seems to kind of say something about music
00:32 over the last year, but what would you,
00:34 what kind of energy and character
00:35 would you say this record kind of encapsulates?
00:37 - Freedom, confidence, empowerment, sensuality,
00:42 pleasure, all of that jazz.
00:44 - Bangers.
00:45 - Bangers, yeah, sure.
00:47 I have fun making it.
00:49 It's a celebratory record.
00:50 I've never really made a record like that.
00:52 It's maybe too scared to,
00:54 and so it just kind of shows where I'm at
00:56 as a woman in music, the kind of music I'm making,
00:59 and what fun I'm having and confidence I have.
01:01 - Do you feel kind of free to go
01:02 in any direction from here?
01:04 - Yeah, I do.
01:05 I think I know what direction I wanna go in,
01:07 but I do feel free, and I think that's a wonderful feeling
01:11 when you're five albums in, you know,
01:13 to be feeling like it's limitless what I could do.
01:17 - Kylie, what's she like?
01:19 - Fab.
01:20 Great, love her.
01:22 She's amazing.
01:23 She's so professional.
01:23 She is brilliant.
01:26 She is really good at picking up dance moves really quickly,
01:31 but she's Kylie Minogue.
01:32 There's me being like one, two step,
01:33 and she's like, oh yeah, boom, boom, boom.
01:34 Okay, great.
01:35 She's a lovely human being,
01:37 and I'm so proud of her with the success of "Badam."
01:41 - I mean, how surreal is it
01:43 when she's in the studio with you?
01:45 - We went in the studio.
01:46 She did it.
01:47 It was that beautiful time of lockdown.
01:50 - All right.
01:51 - So we went actually in the studio.
01:52 I'd love to be in the studio with her,
01:53 but the way that she sent back her stems,
01:56 it was perfect, executed perfectly.
02:01 - Plans to work together again, do you think?
02:03 - Yeah, I reckon.
02:03 I mean, I'm gonna enjoy the fact
02:04 that I'm with Roisin Murphy at the moment.
02:06 I've got a record out with her,
02:08 and I'm just working with my icons,
02:11 and that's an amazing thing to be able to say
02:13 that I'm doing.
02:14 Kylie one year, Roisin Murphy the next, sure.
02:17 Cher maybe next year.
02:18 Who knows?
02:19 Barbra Streisand, I don't know.
02:19 - Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand.
02:20 Any more icons on your bucket list?
02:22 - I love "Shy Girl."
02:23 I wanna work with "Shy Girl" on the next record.
02:25 We've been talking.
02:27 We actually haven't met each other,
02:28 so I'm gonna do that really awkward thing
02:29 where I'm gonna go like that in a minute.
02:31 Who else do I wanna work with?
02:34 Oh God, I don't know.
02:36 I'd love to have Ezra Collective do something with them.
02:39 They are amazing.
02:40 Yeah, loads of people.
02:41 Loyal Khan is amazing.
02:42 I mean, on this list,
02:44 Olivia Deen's got such a beautiful voice.
02:45 Ray is such a killer songwriter.
02:47 Amazing, amazing people.
02:49 - Any bucket list podcast guests you have in mind?
02:51 - What, out of life in any?
02:53 - Out of life.
02:54 - We still want Marcus Rashford,
02:59 and he's really hard to get.
03:00 I wouldn't mind Gareth Southgate
03:03 after seeing the play, "The National."
03:08 I just think he's fascinating.
03:09 We want footballers, and they're really hard to get.
03:12 Who do you think we should have?
03:13 I know I'm speaking to enemies,
03:14 so I should be talking about music styles.
03:16 I mean, we've had Paul McCartney and Noel Gallagher.
03:18 Do you know what I mean?
03:18 We're doing all right.
03:19 And Dolly Parton.
03:20 - Yeah.
03:21 - Southgate, Bill Murray.
03:23 - Bill Murray would be fab.
03:25 We could go one way or the other,
03:26 but it would be so amazing.
03:27 - Yeah.
03:28 Oh God, who else?
03:29 Bjork.
03:30 Get Bjork round.
03:30 - Imagine Lenny with Bjork.
03:33 That would be interesting,
03:35 and I now am putting it on the bucket list.
03:38 Yeah, thank you.
03:38 - Sweet, Jessie Webb.
03:39 Thank you very much. - Thanks, mate.
