00:00 Let me start by saying that bread tastes good,
00:02 and it's okay to think that it's good and to like it.
00:05 And if I see another keto influencer
00:07 eating their sandwich on a bell pepper,
00:08 I am gonna lose it.
00:10 But is bread actually as bad for you
00:11 as people try to make it seem?
00:13 One slice of whole wheat bread contains comparable calories
00:16 and more protein and fiber than a 1/3 cup serving
00:19 of brown rice or quinoa.
00:21 Clearly not as diabolical as people make it seem.
00:24 Fiber is a crucial nutrient
00:25 for a variety of body functions.
00:27 One slice of whole wheat bread
00:28 provides close to 10% of your daily fiber needs.
00:32 There are three parts of a grain,
00:33 the bran, the germ, and the endosperm.
00:36 The bran contains most of the fiber,
00:38 and the germ contains the majority
00:39 of the vitamins and minerals,
00:41 whereas the endosperm contains most of the carbs.
00:44 To make white flour and white bread,
00:46 producers remove the bran and the germ,
00:48 leaving you with a product
00:49 that has very little fiber and nutrients.
00:51 But on the flip side,
00:52 along with a variety of vitamins and minerals,
00:55 whole wheat bread is a great source of protein.
00:57 One slice has around four grams.
00:59 White bread that's made with refined grains
01:02 doesn't have much fiber or protein
01:04 to help slow down its absorption,
01:06 which means the body can burn through it really quickly.
01:09 This can lead to a sharp spike in your blood sugar
01:11 and subsequent crash,
01:13 which can be damaging to how your body processes insulin.
01:16 So try to choose whole wheat breads whenever you can
01:18 and aim to pair your bread
01:20 with additional sources of healthy fat, protein, and fiber.
01:23 Let me be clear that liking the taste
01:25 and being comforted by a food is a good enough reason
01:28 to add it to your eating pattern in moderation,
01:30 and bread is a great example of this.
01:33 Plus, whole wheat bread can actually lead
01:35 to some pretty impressive health benefits too.
01:37 Now I'm hungry for a sandwich.
01:39 Thanks for watching.
