Elderly shelter cat had weeks to live. So this woman adopted him.
Transcript
00:00 He looked very down and out.
00:01 Chances of him making it out are slim to none.
00:04 (cat meows)
00:05 I was like, we cannot leave the shelter without him.
00:08 My name is Jessica
00:09 and this is Mr. Whisker's story for GOB.
00:12 I'm a rescue organization and we go to the shelters
00:15 to see which animals that we can help.
00:17 (cat meows)
00:18 I walked into this room that was filled with cats
00:21 and most of them were really cute, small kittens.
00:23 Hi, oh my goodness.
00:25 He was listed as 17 with FIV and FVLB.
00:29 He was owner surrendered by his previous owners.
00:32 Mr. Whiskers.
00:33 My guess is probably his health was declining
00:36 and maybe they couldn't afford his care
00:38 or they just didn't know what to do.
00:39 Mr. Whiskers.
00:41 The eyes are what got me.
00:42 Very sad.
00:44 He just looked at me kind of like, oh.
00:46 I was like, he's never gonna get adopted
00:47 with these health ailments
00:49 and with a room full of cute, small kittens.
00:51 It's really a stressful environment
00:53 and no place where they should spend their final weeks.
00:56 So we took him home.
00:58 (gentle music)
01:00 Hi.
01:01 He was a little nervous at first.
01:03 Hey, I know you're very scared right now.
01:06 I'm just gonna take this off of you, okay?
01:08 (gentle music)
01:11 It's okay, it's okay, it's okay.
01:12 We got him to the vet, got him on the proper medicines
01:15 and he started to perk up.
01:17 You're almost done, okay?
01:18 Look how good you're doing.
01:19 You're gonna be so clean.
01:21 You came out to say hi to me.
01:22 I feel so lucky.
01:27 I feel so lucky.
01:28 (gentle music)
01:31 The vets did tell us because of what he had.
01:36 Jerry every day, I love you little bud.
01:38 I love you little dude.
01:41 Are you gonna come with me?
01:42 Okay.
01:44 He warmed up quickly.
01:45 He started following me around the house.
01:48 Hello.
01:48 Hello.
01:51 He was very affectionate.
01:52 Considering his age, I was really surprised to see that.
01:56 This guy is hilarious.
01:57 Come on bud.
02:00 Hi.
02:02 He got along with our dogs
02:05 and because Mr. Whiskers had FELV,
02:09 which is contagious to other cats,
02:11 initially he was by himself for a long time.
02:14 And so I thought about getting him a potential playmate
02:17 who had the same disease that he did.
02:19 We rescued a few FELV cats, brought them into our home
02:23 and he was great.
02:24 Whiskey, we have a girlfriend for you.
02:26 He wanted companionship.
02:31 Letting him have those friends was really sweet to see.
02:34 You guys are just making a giant mess,
02:35 but it's okay, I'll clean it up.
02:37 Mr. Whiskers was named Whiskers by his previous owners
02:40 and I was gonna add a little bit of a spin to it.
02:42 So I named him Mr. Whiskers
02:44 to give him a little bit more authority.
02:46 I love you bud.
02:48 It was a really special bond with Mr. Whiskers
02:50 because he was so old and frail when I got him
02:54 and I had to nurse him back to health.
02:57 You're my bud.
02:59 He loved his dinner process and morning breakfast process.
03:02 He was not afraid to let you know when he was hungry
03:05 or when he wanted love.
03:06 You're very impatient for your food.
03:08 Yeah.
03:11 Yeah.
03:12 It's almost ready, okay?
03:15 I think he knew that I was there to help him.
03:19 We had Mr. Whiskers for only five months.
03:23 Oh my goodness.
03:24 Oh my god.
03:25 I love you.
03:28 It is hard each and every time,
03:29 even though I know what I'm getting myself into.
03:31 Are you getting some sun?
03:33 (Mr. Whiskers snoring)
03:34 Yeah.
03:35 I just remove myself from it and put myself in their shoes
03:38 and I just think about what they deserve.
03:40 I love you so much, Mr. Whiskers.
03:42 I hope you sleep very good, okay?
03:44 Okay.
03:46 We'll hang out again tomorrow.
