00:09 When 25-year-old Carly Russell disappeared from the
00:11 side of a Hoover, Alabama interstate, the
00:13 world was mortified.
00:15 The circumstances surrounding her disappearance led to a
00:17 reward being offered for information
00:19 leading to her rescue.
00:21 Countless people on social media chimed in with plausible
00:23 explanations about what happened to her.
00:25 Come to find out it was all a lie.
00:27 At this point, everyone is wondering what will happen to
00:29 Carly now that her scam has been revealed.
00:32 Thankfully, RRG received some expert advice from New York
00:34 attorney Dmitri Shachnovich about this entire hot stankin
00:37 mess and which charges, if any, Carly might be facing.
00:40 Everybody is just aching to see what'll happen next, right?
00:44 The questions and the rumors on the internet are endless.
00:49 Will Carly go to prison?
00:51 Will she be arrested?
00:53 Before we jump into today's video, be sure to scoop up
00:55 something to munch on at rrgsnacks.com.

01:00 teriyaki beef jerky, toasted corn nuts, and
01:03 butter toffee peanuts.
01:05 In order to give you some more insight into this story, we
01:07 have to take you back to July 13.
01:10 Carly left her workplace in Birmingham, Alabama around 8:20
01:13 PM and took a robe and some toilet paper with her.
01:16 She picked up some food and stopped at Target to buy some
01:18 granola bars and Cheez-Its.
01:20 She stayed in the parking lot until 9:21 PM,
01:23 according to police.
01:24 Just after 9:30 PM, she called 911 to report a toddler on
01:28 the highway, saying she had stopped to check on the boy.
01:31 After talking to 911, she called a family member.
01:34 The family member said they lost contact with Carly, but
01:37 the line remained open.
01:38 Carly's mom then called the police and said Carly had been
01:41 on the phone with a relative, and that relative had heard
01:44 Carly scream.
01:45 And then Carly simply disappeared.
01:47 Hoover officers arrived on the scene within five minutes of
01:50 being dispatched.
01:51 Carly was gone, but officers found her car, cell phone, her
01:54 wig, and her purse.
01:56 Her Apple Watch was also in her bag.
01:58 The snacks she had purchased at Target were not in the car
02:01 or at the scene.
02:02 49 hours later, Carly returned to her parents' house and
02:05 gave investigators her account of what happened on the night
02:07 of July 13.
02:09 She said a man came out of the woods and mumbled that he was
02:11 checking on the child.
02:13 Carly told officers the man then forced her over a fence
02:15 and into a car.
02:17 Carly said the next thing she remembers is being in the
02:19 trailer of a truck with the man, who Carly said had
02:22 orange hair and was accompanied by a woman.
02:24 She also said she could hear a baby crying.
02:26 Carly told police she escaped but was recaptured and put
02:29 into a car and blindfolded.
02:31 Carly said she was then taken to a house
02:33 where she was undressed.
02:34 The next day, she said, the woman fed her cheese crackers
02:37 and played with her hair.
02:40 Carly said at some point she was put back into a vehicle.
02:42 She claimed she was able to escape while it was in the
02:44 West Hoover area and ran through the
02:46 woods to get back home.
02:48 Carly was taken to a hospital for evaluation and was
02:50 released.
02:51 Can you tell me what happened Saturday night?
02:55 Did you just get a knock at the door?
02:56 Anything leading to the case itself, we can't discuss that.
03:02 Investigators attempted to get to the bottom of what
03:04 happened, but Carly wasn't ready to
03:06 talk about the situation.
03:08 By this point, people thought there was
03:09 something fishy going on.
03:11 The online concern swiftly shifted to social media users
03:14 turning the incident into a joke and accusing Carly of
03:17 making up the entire ordeal for attention.
03:19 On July 16, her boyfriend took to his Facebook page to thank
03:22 supporters for their ongoing prayers.
03:24 He also asked that everyone be respectful of Carly's
03:27 situation since she was fighting for her life for the
03:29 past 48 hours.
03:31 He also wrote that Carly wouldn't be giving any updates
03:33 on the whereabouts of her kidnapper.
03:35 Her mother made a similar statement, saying they were
03:37 overjoyed to have Carly back and that they would provide
03:40 more details to the media in due time.
03:42 But the conspiracy theories wouldn't stop.
03:44 And when police dispatchers revealed a caller had called
03:46 in and said Carly called her family from a nearby red roof
03:49 inn motel about four hours before she
03:51 returned home to them--
03:53 social media users demanded answers.
03:55 After police gave a press conference on July 19 in which
03:58 they confirmed there wasn't a wandering child on the
04:00 interstate, Carly's story quickly fell apart.
04:03 Police also confirmed there was no risk to public safety.
04:06 Investigators found that before her disappearance,
04:08 Carly had searched for whether or not you have to pay for an
04:11 Amber Alert and the maximum age for an Amber Alert.
04:14 Investigators also said Carly searched for a one-way bus
04:17 ticket from Birmingham to Nashville.
04:19 She also searched for the movie "Taken."
04:23 On July 22, she was fired from her job at Woodhouse Spa in
04:26 Alabama.
04:27 And then on July 24, Carly admitted she made the entire
04:30 story up.
04:31 In a statement released by her attorney, Carly said there was
04:33 no kidnapping.
04:34 She also admitted that she never saw a toddler running
04:36 along the interstate.
04:38 She said she never left the Hoover area and had no help
04:40 from anyone during the time she was gone.
04:42 -We ask for your prayers for Carly as she addresses her
04:46 issues and attempts to move forward, understanding that
04:49 she made a mistake in this matter.
04:51 Carly, again, ask for your forgiveness and prayers.
04:57 -The world can finally move on, right?
04:58 Well, not quite.
04:59 The police chief said authorities are discussing
05:01 possible criminal charges against Carly.
05:04 So what type of crime did Carly commit?
05:06 Let's listen to the attorney.
05:07 -Right now, the charges will vary depending on what the
05:10 investigation shows.
05:11 Right?
05:12 But generally, obviously, right, making false claims to
05:15 police can get you in trouble, right?
05:17 Whether or not there will be jail time depends, again, on a
05:21 variety of circumstances.
05:23 Sentencing is a mitigation decision.
05:27 So all the background information of Carly will be
05:30 taken into account.
05:32 I don't know if there are mental health
05:34 considerations, other issues there.
05:37 -And what about the police and investigators that wasted
05:39 their time on this hoax?
05:41 -Folks are asking, will she have to pay
05:42 back the government?
05:43 Right?
05:44 All these agencies, local police, federal agencies that
05:47 became involved here are spending time and money
05:50 deploying resources.
05:52 Generally speaking, police resources are not paid back if
05:57 somebody is arrested for making a false claim.
06:01 It's difficult to run the criminal justice system that
06:03 way because the police and the government are interested in
06:08 people coming forward with criminal allegations, right?
06:12 They want victims to report crimes so that the public
06:16 safety is ensured.
06:17 The most important part of this entire thing right now is to
06:22 preserve the evidence if there is any evidence, right?
06:27 And that is the job of the police.
06:29 So if and when criminal charges are brought, if and when
06:32 indictments are sought, and if and when convictions are
06:36 sought, right, that evidence will come into play.
06:42 -Do you think investigators should pursue criminal charges
06:44 against Carly?
06:45 Let us know down below.
