00:00 So here we are with John in his nice plush office at the training ground
00:04 after Pompey have played crawling behind closed doors friendly and Pompey
00:08 ran out 9-1 winner so what were your thoughts on that game please John?
00:11 I think a really good exercise for us in terms of getting the minutes into the lads.
00:16 We played 120 minutes today which was very deliberate. What we wanted to do is
00:20 with the lads that were returning get two strong 11s out which we managed to do.
00:25 So most of the boys played 60 minutes, a couple in there played 75 and a couple played 45 as well
00:30 just to manage them coming back in. So yeah really pleased with that from a
00:34 fitness perspective first of all and it was really nice to see a few of the bits we've been working on
00:38 in training coming into fruition during the game as well.
00:41 Yeah and ultimately to score 9 goals we were really pleased with that as well.
00:45 I mean obviously I have to point out as well it's over 120 minutes so it was four half an hour periods wasn't there?
00:50 So yeah it was a different format.
00:52 Yeah slightly different and again really by design. So we wanted to not have the midweek game this week
01:00 so we could get four weeks worth of training and then just add the extra 30 minutes on
01:03 because otherwise I think players would be slightly short of minutes going into AFC
01:07 and into the Bristol City game as well. So it just sets up quite nicely.
01:11 We'd always spoken about having that free week to actually get a lot done on the training pitch.
01:18 We managed to do it, we did manage to do it this week and it was a tough week for the lads.
01:21 Thankfully I think they look a lot sharper than they did this time last week.
01:25 We just had those non-league games that were good exercises again like I said after the game.
01:30 But yeah now we need to start sharpening things up a bit and that was a good start.
01:33 When we last spoke to you after the Hammer Ward-Liverpool game you had quite a few injuries,
01:37 knocks, niggles, illnesses. Most of them are out there playing again today.
01:41 Yeah so I think everybody's back to full fitness apart from Joe Rafferty who trained yesterday.
01:46 He trained with the training group this morning and he will, if all goes well,
01:50 feature on Tuesday night against AFC. So he'll be the last one to come back.
01:54 Hopefully, it looks like we haven't picked up any injuries today in touch with.
01:57 We'll see what the report is from the medical staff after the game.
02:01 But hopefully we've got through that as well and the lads have got another good block of fitness in the tank.
02:06 Things more encouraging on the injury side now completely?
02:09 Yeah much more encouraging and it did look a bit thin last week because we had I think the five lads that were out
02:13 and we were protecting them. But for them to come back, they've all trained this week.
02:19 I think fully we were careful with Regan and we were careful with Gavin White just coming back into the fold.
02:25 So I think they missed Tuesday's session deliberately, so they did on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
02:30 And yeah everyone else has come back pretty strong. So Colby's trained all week,
02:34 Conor Shaughnessy's trained all week, Tom Lowry's trained all week and then yeah Joe Rafferty's the last one just to come back into that fold.
02:40 Cassini Ienghi scored, he was the last one you introduced on the pitch today and he scored a hat-trick.
02:46 Yeah so Cassini got 45 minutes there. Again we wanted to make sure this was Cassini's first minutes I think since the back end of the season last,
02:56 or the A-league season last year. So yeah I wanted to manage him back in, he's had a pretty hectic few weeks coming over from Australia
03:02 and getting settled into life down in Portsmouth. So on top of that he picked up a little ankle injury in training last week.
03:08 So yeah to get him back was brilliant and he looks to have a really exciting prospect.
03:14 Everything that we had seen on video, because he was the one player that we didn't actually manage to scout live.
03:19 So everything we saw on the video and all of the due diligence and all the work we've done, it looks like,
03:24 it's obviously early days but it looks like it's a pretty good start to his Portsmouth career.
03:29 Yeah because he, can you talk us through his goals that he scored as well? Can you remember them?
03:33 I'm trying to remember them!
03:34 He scored one with left foot, one with his right foot didn't he?
03:37 So yeah, so he had one, the left footed one that he cut across was in the bottom corner.
03:41 I think one was the right footed shot, the last goal where he showed a bit of composure in the box.
03:47 And I think the other one was from the cutback or from the cross where he just finished it first time.
03:51 Scudder yeah.
03:52 Yeah, really pleased with that, really pleased with the finishes.
03:56 Also just really pleased with the contribution in general, the fact that we were getting the ball forward,
04:00 running forward, passing forward, getting those crosses in early.
04:02 I think he had a couple of other opportunities, one cleared off the line as well.
04:05 That's the more important thing, of course it's nice to get a result like that,
04:09 but the more important thing is to actually see some of those patterns
04:13 and some of the positive things that we've been working on come out in training.
04:15 That's what we've got in the game.
04:16 And everything, he scored a hat-trick in 45 minutes, so expectations are going to be raised on the supporters.
04:22 Yeah, obviously doing the calculations about how many goals that will mean for him this season.
04:26 It's brilliant, the competition now up front is really fierce.
04:32 And Christian scored again today, or scored today, I thought he looked sharp,
04:36 playing in a slightly different role as well, just asking him to play off the centre-forward.
04:40 I thought it suited him really well.
04:42 And yeah, Colby getting a goal too, so all three centre-forwards actually scoring.
04:47 It's a really good problem I guess for us to have.
04:50 Thank you very much.
