00:00:09 >> Hey, cutie.
00:00:10 >> I'll never forget how to love.
00:00:14 >> It ain't so bad being a toy.
00:00:19 Nobody takes time to stop and think about what's important anymore.
00:00:25 >> Teen idol actor, Eddie Ray, was killed in a motorcycle accident.
00:00:28 >> I got bigger fish to fry and places to see.
00:00:30 >> On California State Road 653, his first movie,
00:00:34 Rebel Without a Reason, was a huge hit with teenagers.
00:00:37 >> It had been a very rough winter.
00:00:42 For two weeks in late January, the temperature stayed in the single digits,
00:00:48 dropping to a low of minus 36 degrees one night.
00:00:52 On top of that, we had a record snowfall.
00:00:56 I lost my job in early January and things were very tense at home between Rita and me.
00:01:03 I accidentally happened on an Eddie Ray fan club website where I met Sam, Dan, and Jane.
00:01:08 They were all younger than me, but we all shared a love for Eddie Ray
00:01:12 and the influence he had on that generation, my parents' generation.
00:01:19 It was late May when we made the decision to visit Fairview, Indiana, Eddie Ray's hometown.
00:01:24 We would all meet up in Indianapolis and then drive up to Fairview, spend a couple of days there.
00:01:30 I would drive in from Cincinnati and the rest of the group would fly to Indianapolis.
00:01:36 Four different people embarking on a journey in search of answers.
00:01:42 There was Sam, who was trying to find himself.
00:01:46 >> Just think about it, okay?
00:01:51 I told you, there's nothing to think about.
00:01:53 Sam, are you still going across the country on this wild goose chase?
00:01:57 It's crazy.
00:01:58 Those others, they're not our kind.
00:01:59 You don't know anything about them.
00:02:01 Going off to Indiana, your papa would roll over in his grave.
00:02:05 >> Mom, calm down.
00:02:08 Remember what your doctor said.
00:02:10 Besides, I think dad would be proud of me.
00:02:14 >> Nothing good ever came out of Indiana, right Marvin?
00:02:18 >> Dan Quayle.
00:02:19 >> Dan Quayle, what a joke.
00:02:21 What about your job?
00:02:21 What does your boss think of this, Miss Sugar?
00:02:23 I have no idea of yours.
00:02:25 >> I'm only missing one day.
00:02:26 >> And he worked extra last week.
00:02:28 >> Sam, I'm just looking out for your well-being.
00:02:30 I don't want anything to happen to my little boy chick.
00:02:34 >> I've got to pick up Rose.
00:02:38 Catch you later, Sam.
00:02:39 >> I'll be fine.
00:02:50 >> And there was Dan, still grieving over the tragic death
00:02:59 of his young bride, Tabitha.
00:03:01 >> Hello, Dan.
00:03:09 >> Aaron.
00:03:11 >> You know, I really hope Allah somehow spoke to you
00:03:18 and convinced you to change your mind.
00:03:20 Dan, I'm telling you, I have a very bad feeling about this trip.
00:03:23 >> Since when did you care for such things?
00:03:25 You're a non-believer, remember?
00:03:26 >> I'm only a realist.
00:03:28 Okay, so what?
00:03:29 I question everything.
00:03:30 But my friend, I'm questioning you.
00:03:32 I mean, you're traveling this great distance, and for what?
00:03:38 Dan, I agree for Tabitha too.
00:03:41 You know she was like a sister to me.
00:03:44 But do you honestly believe that this Eddie Ray's going to help you?
00:03:48 Dan, he's dead, and he's been dead for almost 50 years.
00:03:53 Why are you doing this?
00:03:57 >> Aaron, I've told you, these are good people.
00:03:59 They've helped me through my grief.
00:04:01 They -- look, never mind.
00:04:05 I'll call you later.
00:04:13 >> Last there was Jay, someone who pushed, prodded, and convinced all of us
00:04:17 to go to Indiana during that hot August weekend.
00:04:21 >> I still think of her.
00:04:29 But I have a hard time remembering her.
00:04:37 >> Well, honey, you were only five years old when we lost her.
00:04:43 Just hold on to the memories you have.
00:04:47 She loved you so much.
00:04:50 >> Dan, did mom know?
00:04:57 I mean, back then?
00:05:03 >> Honey, I don't know.
00:05:06 But I believe she -- well, you know.
00:05:11 >> Sorry.
00:05:13 I got stuck in traffic.
00:05:18 >> Okay, time for me to leave.
00:05:41 You be a good girl, all right?
00:05:43 >> Can I go with you?
00:05:44 Can you bring me back something?
00:05:45 >> Sweetheart, I'm only going to be gone for three days.
00:05:48 Maybe next time you can go with me.
00:05:50 >> I know that you and mom are -- well, she's mad, but she'll get over it.
00:05:54 >> Listen, I know things have been really difficult lately,
00:05:58 but we both love you very much, and you know that.
00:06:01 Deep down, we love each other.
00:06:02 That's what's important.
00:06:04 I'll see you soon, okay?
00:06:06 >> All right.
00:06:07 [ Birds chirping ]
00:06:16 [ Door slams ]
00:06:19 [ Music ]
00:06:22 >> I've been stumbling around, blind in the dark,
00:06:28 banging on walls, screaming at everyone.
00:06:35 I see you standing there, that look in your eyes,
00:06:41 oh, so innocent, but you are to blame.
00:06:49 The things that you do to me --
00:06:52 >> So you still plan on going to Indianapolis?
00:06:56 God knows why you're too young to be going through male menopause.
00:07:01 Look, don't run away from me!
00:07:02 >> I'm not running away from you!
00:07:04 >> But I don't have anything else to say.
00:07:06 You just don't understand me.
00:07:08 I don't think you've ever understood me!
00:07:11 >> Understand?
00:07:14 I gave up trying to understand you a long time ago.
00:07:19 You have obligations here!
00:07:22 You shouldn't be going off and screwing around with somebody younger than your own sister!
00:07:26 >> Damn it, it's not that way at all!
00:07:28 I can control myself.
00:07:30 >> What about last year, when you and what's-his-
00:07:34 >> Forget it.
00:07:40 Rita, it's only for three days.
00:07:44 Things are going to work out.
00:07:47 You just have to trust me.
00:07:51 >> You think that I'll forget, but you are wrong.
00:07:56 I'll take it to the grave, which might not be so far away, so far away, far away.
00:08:11 I've been stumbling around.
00:08:15 >> Report card's going to be good?
00:08:16 >> Mm-hmm.
00:08:17 >> You like your teachers?
00:08:18 >> Yeah, I even told them that you're going to Eddie Ray's hometown.
00:08:21 >> Oh yeah? Cool, that's right, I leave tomorrow, I'll be gone all weekend.
00:08:24 >> Have you been to Eddie Ray's hometown before?
00:08:26 >> No, I never have, it'll be my first time.
00:08:28 >> Yeah, did you ever watch his movies when you were a kid?
00:08:30 >> Yeah, I remember watching his movies on television, but you know, he was popular even before I was born.
00:08:35 >> Wow, I think he's so cool.
00:08:37 I even think Mom likes him, he's so cute.
00:08:40 >> Hey, I taped a special about him last night.
00:08:42 Do you want to watch it?
00:08:43 >> Yeah, do you want me to go get Mom?
00:08:45 >> No, Mom's pretty busy.
00:08:47 Maybe she can watch later.
00:08:48 >> Okay.
00:09:05 Let's see here, how about...
00:09:12 There we go.
00:09:13 50 years ago, a young man from Fairview, Indiana, left the comforts of home to follow his dream and head for Hollywood, seeking fame and fortune.
00:09:21 Little did he realize that his life would be cut short by a tragic motorcycle accident, just as he was obtaining a measure of the admiration he was seeking.
00:09:30 Or that he would be credited with influencing young teenagers worldwide in the baby boomer pop culture scene for the next half century.
00:09:38 Let's look at one of the most recognized and revered scenes from the history of the cinema from "Rebel Without a Reason."
00:09:50 >> Why'd this happen to us?
00:09:52 I ain't a bad kid, am I?
00:09:54 >> Ronnie, you're not bad, it's them.
00:09:57 Sometimes I feel like no one trusts me.
00:10:00 They treat me like a child, like I'm being suffocated.
00:10:03 I hate them, they're all monsters.
00:10:05 Ronnie, don't ever say you're bad.
00:10:07 >> You're not bad to me.
00:10:10 >> I never treat my kids like the way they treated me or the way they treated that David.
00:10:15 Poor kid.
00:10:17 You know, the whole world is so messed up.
00:10:20 Nobody takes time to stop and think about what's important anymore.
00:10:24 They're so comfortable in their nice homes and nice jobs.
00:10:28 It's all an illusion, none of it's real.
00:10:31 It's like the whole world forgot how to love.
00:10:34 Nobody cares about love anymore.
00:10:36 It's all they care about.
00:10:38 >> Ronnie, you're not like them.
00:10:40 You know how to love.
00:10:42 You're so nice and strong and gentle.
00:10:47 And you've always accepted me for who I am.
00:10:50 You've never treated me like a tramp.
00:10:56 >> Betty, I swear, I'll never forget that alone.

00:11:18 >> So, anyone hungry?
00:11:40 >> I'm starving.
00:11:41 I couldn't eat that crap they serve on the plane.
00:11:44 I mean, unless everyone else is hungry, I can wait.
00:11:49 >> I could go for some grub and a cup of coffee.
00:11:51 >> Sure, I can use a bite.
00:11:53 >> Great, I found this sandwich coffee shop kind of place on the Internet.
00:11:56 It's in an artsy neighborhood.
00:11:57 >> Oh, yeah?
00:11:58 >> Yeah, you know, theater district, art galleries, that kind of thing.
00:12:01 >> Cool.
00:12:03 [Music]
00:12:11 >> I'm starving.
00:12:13 I could not eat that crap.
00:12:15 [Sigh]
00:12:16 [Door slams]
00:12:17 >> Are you excited?
00:12:29 You know, about being on this trip.
00:12:32 >> I am.
00:12:33 Normally, I'm not an impulsive person, but you're very persuasive.
00:12:40 >> Well, I usually get my way.
00:12:43 >> So, have you ever been to Indianapolis before?
00:12:47 >> Yeah, I was here when I was a kid.
00:12:50 A long time ago, gosh, 30 years ago.
00:12:53 Anyway, this part of town was a lot different then.
00:12:56 There were a lot of gypsies around.
00:12:59 >> Really?
00:13:00 >> Yeah.
00:13:01 >> I have no idea.
00:13:04 I was just a kid.
00:13:06 >> Adam, you're a lot older then.
00:13:11 I mean, so, how old are you?
00:13:16 >> I'll be 36 this year.
00:13:19 >> You look so much younger.
00:13:21 >> Thank you.
00:13:23 >> So, Sam, tell me, how long have you been an Eddie Ray fan?
00:13:26 >> Since I was about 13, I guess.
00:13:28 >> That's when I saw Rebel Without a Reason.
00:13:31 >> That was such a cool movie.
00:13:32 It really rocked.
00:13:33 You know, the grown-ups were so, what's the word?
00:13:36 >> Square.
00:13:38 >> It's hard to believe that our parents were the ones that grew up with those films,
00:13:42 and they still ended up being so uptight.
00:13:44 >> No, my dad never treated me like that.
00:13:46 He was really understanding.
00:13:48 >> My father wasn't.
00:13:49 He was strict.
00:13:50 He was also very traditional, you know, in the old ways.
00:13:53 >> What do you mean, the old ways?
00:13:54 >> Well, he was supposed to go back to Lebanon after he graduated,
00:13:57 but he ended up marrying my mother instead.
00:14:01 >> Was your mother Lebanese?
00:14:03 >> No, she was English and a Christian.
00:14:07 >> Was your wife an Eddie Ray fan?
00:14:09 >> My wife loved Eddie Ray.
00:14:11 She was very Western in some ways,
00:14:14 but it wasn't until she was killed that I started watching his movies.
00:14:21 Anyway, now I'm here instead of back in New York working.
00:14:25 >> At least you have a job.
00:14:26 >> Nowadays, with the way the economy is, marketing types like me are a dime a dozen.
00:14:32 >> Well, I can't be fired because I have my own business.
00:14:35 I mean, if my business isn't doing well, I don't have to worry about making payroll.
00:14:38 I just don't pay myself.
00:14:41 But listen, my friend, things will improve.
00:14:44 You'll find a job, and my business will grow.
00:14:47 God willing.
00:14:50 >> Anyway, Jane, tell me, I can't remember, did your dad ever remarry?
00:14:55 >> No.
00:15:03 >> So, where to now?
00:15:05 >> Would you mind if we drove to the track? I always wanted to see it.
00:15:08 >> That's cool.
00:15:37 [silence]
00:15:46 [engine starting]
00:16:12 >> So, was it what you expected?
00:16:15 >> I wish my father could have seen it.
00:16:17 He was a big race fan.
00:16:19 I remember we used to listen to the race on the radio when I was a kid.
00:16:23 >> Really?
00:16:24 >> Yeah, but he never made it up here.
00:16:26 He died so young.
00:16:28 Anyway, did you enjoy seeing the track?
00:16:31 >> Yeah, I guess.
00:16:33 I'm not a big race fan.
00:16:35 It was bigger than I thought it'd be.
00:16:38 >> You know, Dan, you should come back in May and, you know, see the race.
00:16:44 >> We better head to Fairview. We've got to take the back roads to get there.
00:17:07 >> You okay?
00:17:09 >> Yeah, I just don't like to sit in one place for a long time.
00:17:15 I'll be fine. Don't worry about me.
00:17:25 [knocking]
00:17:26 >> Sam?
00:17:29 >> Yeah, come on in.
00:17:35 >> Where's your mom?
00:17:36 >> She's out shopping.
00:17:39 >> So?
00:17:42 >> So...
00:17:44 >> So what?
00:17:46 >> You know what we talked about.
00:17:49 About what happened the other night.
00:17:51 >> That again.
00:17:52 We've been through this.
00:17:54 >> Sam, put the groceries away.
00:17:55 Your poor old mama's tired.
00:17:57 So Marvin, how are you?
00:17:59 How is your beautiful, unattached sister that doesn't have a date Friday night?
00:18:03 >> Mom, stop.
00:18:04 >> No, it's not right.
00:18:05 You sit in front of that computer all day, ruining your eyesight.
00:18:08 And those pictures you look at, you know you should be going out with a nice, attractive girl.
00:18:12 Rose is going to make some lucky man a very nice wife.
00:18:15 >> Mother, please.
00:18:16 >> Sam, a good-looking boy like you with so much to give the girls, just like your papa, may he rest in peace,
00:18:21 you should be on the lookout for a nice girl like Rose.
00:18:24 And you're not going to find one in those bars you go to.
00:18:26 In those places, all you're going to find is a bunch of whores.
00:18:28 I didn't raise you to go out with whores.
00:18:30 You don't know anything about me.
00:18:41 >> Dan, back at lunch, you know when you asked me if my dad would be married?
00:18:49 Well, he's gay.
00:18:51 Has been as far back as I can remember.
00:18:54 >> Oh.
00:18:56 >> And, well, my dad's African-American.
00:18:58 >> What?
00:18:59 >> That's weird, with a Jewish mother and a German Methodist father.
00:19:02 >> Well, my mother was Asian.
00:19:04 They met when my dad was in the service.
00:19:06 >> Was your dad in Vietnam?
00:19:08 >> Yes, but my mom was an American.
00:19:11 Her family came to San Francisco before the Second World War.
00:19:16 They were prisoners at the Amache intern camp in Colorado.
00:19:25 >> Now, here's a clip from the star-studded movie "The Very Tall Texan."
00:19:29 >> Look, Tommy, I ain't trying to butt in, but you got to stay away from them Farleys.
00:19:34 You don't belong up in that big fancy house.
00:19:37 It's only going to bring you trouble.
00:19:39 Them people don't care about folks like us.
00:19:42 We're just like something they own.
00:19:44 It ain't right thinking you can mix with them.
00:19:47 I seen you sniffing around that Mary Ann.
00:19:49 Boy, you ain't nothing but a toy to her.
00:19:52 Her old man finds out what's going on,
00:19:54 he's going to shoot you in the back and claim you drawed first.
00:19:58 >> Look, pops, it's none of your damn business.
00:20:02 It ain't so bad being a toy.
00:20:04 Ain't my problem, Frank ain't man enough to satisfy her.
00:20:07 >> Boy, you're headed for trouble.
00:20:08 I'm only trying to help you out.
00:20:10 That Mary Ann's going to drop you like a hot potato.
00:20:13 Worst, she'll say that you forced yourself on her, and then they'll lynch you.
00:20:16 Tommy, you're a good kid, but you just got to stay with your own kind.
00:20:21 >> That's just the way it is.
00:20:24 Pops, I don't plan on being a cow puncher the rest of my life.
00:20:27 I got bigger fish to fry and places to see.
00:20:30 There's more to the world than this damn ranch.
00:20:35 >> Good thing, sweetie.
00:20:40 >> Is there a quicker way?
00:20:42 >> Nope.
00:20:44 Welcome to the Midwest.
00:20:46 A million small towns in the middle of nowhere.
00:20:50 >> Damn!
00:20:56 >> You okay?
00:20:58 >> Yeah, I'm fine.
00:20:59 You guys should watch where you're going.
00:21:00 Someone could get hurt.
00:21:01 >> Oh, my God, is everything all right?
00:21:03 >> Very lucky, my friend.
00:21:05 >> Yeah, lucky so, I've been told.
00:21:07 >> What the hell are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?
00:21:09 >> I could ask you guys the same question.
00:21:11 As a matter of fact, I will.
00:21:12 We're going to Fairview.
00:21:14 You know, the hometown of Fairview?
00:21:16 That's where I'm headed.
00:21:17 You mind giving me a lift?
00:21:19 >> Sure.
00:21:20 I'm Jane.
00:21:21 Sam, and it's Dan.
00:21:23 >> I'm Adam, the distracted driver.
00:21:25 >> Okay, you guys ready to roll?
00:21:28 You mind if I sit up front?
00:21:29 >> No, go ahead.
00:21:30 What did you say your name was again?
00:21:34 >> Some folks call me Roy.
00:21:36 [ Music ]
00:21:59 >> So, Dan, you're Lebanese?
00:22:02 >> No, I'm American.
00:22:04 My father was Lebanese.
00:22:06 >> Did you ever get back to Lebanon?
00:22:09 >> No, you see, my father was Muslim, but my mother was Christian.
00:22:14 >> That must have been challenging.
00:22:16 >> It was.
00:22:17 For six months, I would go to church with my mother,
00:22:19 and for six months, I would go to mosque with my father.
00:22:22 >> Really?
00:22:23 >> Yes.
00:22:24 My father, he was strict, but he was also very cunning.
00:22:30 >> In what way?
00:22:32 >> Well, before my 16th birthday, he told me I needed to decide
00:22:37 whether I wanted to be Christian or Muslim.
00:22:40 So on our way to buy this old car for me,
00:22:43 he said it would be a great car to drive to mosque.
00:22:47 >> And?
00:22:48 >> Pretty much got the message and became Muslim.
00:22:52 >> What does your wife think about you going on this little junket?
00:22:57 >> Well, my wife, she was killed in a convenience store holdup almost a year ago.
00:23:07 >> Did they catch the guy who did it?
00:23:10 >> Yeah, he was some dumb kid looking for money to buy some more dope.
00:23:15 >> Damn junkies.
00:23:17 >> No, I mean, he felt that way at first,
00:23:20 but he just started hanging out with the wrong crowd.
00:23:24 >> That's too bad.
00:23:26 Sometimes life is really unfair.
00:23:35 >> You must let go of your grief and move on.
00:23:38 I hate seeing you so depressed.
00:23:43 >> I just blame myself for making Tabitha work.
00:23:47 If my business would have been better or if she had gotten that teaching job,
00:23:51 she'd still be with us.
00:23:53 >> You must put this tragedy behind you and move on.
00:23:58 Tabitha would want that.
00:24:00 Maybe you should start seeing other people.
00:24:04 You know, meet other women.
00:24:06 Go out.
00:24:11 >> I just can't.
00:24:12 I would feel like I betrayed her.
00:24:14 Not right now.
00:24:16 >> Listen, Dan, each day you grieve is a day lost.
00:24:22 You must accept the past and embrace the future.
00:24:26 You want to honor her?
00:24:28 Honor her by living your life.
00:24:30 >> All in good time.
00:24:32 All in good time.
00:24:41 >> Stop. Pull it. Pull it here.
00:24:43 Do it.
00:24:44 [music]
00:24:57 >> Damn you!
00:24:59 You're not getting better!
00:25:00 Damn you!
00:25:04 >> Hey, what are you doing out here?
00:25:07 We don't open for a couple of hours.
00:25:10 >> I'm sorry, sir.
00:25:12 I don't know what's going on here.
00:25:14 Are you the manager?
00:25:15 >> Yeah, and I'm also the owner.
00:25:17 Dad opened this theater back in '49.
00:25:20 So where are you folks from?
00:25:22 >> From all over.
00:25:23 I'm from Cincinnati.
00:25:24 The lady's from San Francisco.
00:25:26 One of the guys is from Florida, and the other one's from New Jersey.
00:25:29 I don't know where Roy's from.
00:25:31 >> Where are you headed?
00:25:32 >> We're heading to Fairview.
00:25:33 Are we getting close?
00:25:34 >> It's just up the road.
00:25:35 >> Great.
00:25:36 >> This drive-in's where all the kids from Fairview would come in the '50s and '60s.
00:25:40 Nowadays they all play computer games or rent movies.
00:25:43 I don't know how much longer I can keep the theater going.
00:25:46 You know, not very many drive-ins left around.
00:25:49 But we've been open since '49, except for that time after them kids were killed.
00:25:53 My dad felt real bad about the accident, so he closed earlier that year.
00:25:56 You know, usually we close at the end of October.
00:25:58 That year he closed in August.
00:26:00 >> Wow.
00:26:01 What happened?
00:26:03 >> I don't remember exactly.
00:26:05 I was just a little boy at the time.
00:26:06 But the story is that these kids came to see "Rebel" without a reason, and they'd been drinking,
00:26:11 and left the theater, got into a terrible car wreck, and were killed.
00:26:15 It was back in 1958.
00:26:19 Well, you folks enjoy your visit.
00:26:22 >> Thanks. I appreciate it.
00:26:23 Take care.
00:26:26 You mind telling me what that was all about?
00:26:29 >> Don't worry about it. Let's go, okay?
00:26:36 All right.
00:26:45 Why don't we stop and get something to eat?
00:27:04 Don't you have a place to stay?
00:27:05 >> Don't worry about me. I'll be fine.
00:27:08 >> Why don't you stay with us? We have three rooms reserved.
00:27:11 It's okay, isn't it?
00:27:13 You guys go check in, and I'll wait out here.
00:27:27 >> Hello. Can I help you?
00:27:28 >> Yes. We have three rooms reserved under the name Jane Mystic.
00:27:32 >> I have been trying to reach you all day, sweetheart.
00:27:34 We only have two rooms left.
00:27:36 >> What?
00:27:38 >> See, the pork producers, they're meeting over in Goodlinton, the county seat.
00:27:43 And, well, they ran out of rooms, so we get their overflow.
00:27:47 We have a contract with the county.
00:27:49 There was nothing I could do.
00:27:52 I'm sorry.
00:27:53 >> So, well, I managed to save you two rooms.
00:27:56 >> But I had a reservation.
00:27:59 >> All right. We have five people now.
00:28:02 What are we going to do?
00:28:04 >> Well, I thought you might pick up an extra person.
00:28:07 So one of the rooms that I saved is our mini suite.
00:28:10 On one side, there's a king-size bed, and on the other side, there's a sofa bed and a cot.
00:28:16 The second room has two queen-size beds.
00:28:18 So, see, there's room enough for five people.
00:28:22 >> All right. Come here, guys.
00:28:28 I don't think there's much we can do here.
00:28:31 Jane, Roy, and myself will take the suite. Sam, you and Dan take the other room.
00:28:37 >> Okay. Who will sleep where?
00:28:40 >> You take the bed. We'll put Roy on the cot, and I'll sleep on the sofa bed in the other room.
00:28:45 I'm responsible for Roy being with us, and we don't know anything about the guy, so I'd like to keep him where I can see him.
00:28:52 >> Fine with me.
00:28:53 >> Sure. We were going to share a room anyway.
00:28:55 >> Jane?
00:28:56 >> Sure. That's okay.
00:28:58 >> I feel responsible for asking Roy to stay with us. I'm sorry.
00:29:03 >> Don't worry about it. Let's just all get some rest.
00:29:14 >> Hey, did you notice anything strange about the town back there?
00:29:17 >> No. What do you ask?
00:29:20 >> I don't know. There's not much to the town, but maybe it's just a feeling.
00:29:25 >> Whatever.
00:29:28 >> So, have you ever dated any women, or have you always been gay?
00:29:33 >> Look, I'm not gay, okay? I've been with plenty of women. They beg for mercy. Why would you even ask that?
00:29:39 >> Come on. I saw the way you were looking at that guy back there at the track. That's not the way that someone who's straight looks at another man.
00:29:45 >> So I notice one good-looking guy, and all of a sudden I'm a homosexual.
00:29:50 Come on, Dan. I didn't think you'd be so judgmental.
00:29:54 >> All I'm saying is life's full of difficult choices.
00:29:57 >> Remember that story I told you about having to choose between being Christian and Muslim? Think about it.
00:30:03 >> Well, I... So, did you ever regret your decision?
00:30:09 >> Sometimes I used to wonder. That is, until I met Tabitha in college.
00:30:14 She was a modern Muslim, but she would have never considered marrying me if I were Christian.
00:30:18 >> Really?
00:30:20 >> Yeah. I mean, sometimes I believe that once we make that defining decision in life, our die is cast, and we have very little control over our destiny.
00:30:31 >> Well, I don't think things are set in stone. You can always change your mind.
00:30:37 >> Well, my friend, I hope you're right. Yeah, I hope you're right.
00:30:44 >> Good night, man. Good night.
00:30:52 >> Oh, sorry.
00:30:54 >> Oh, come on. I can't see someone in the bathroom before.
00:31:03 Need to pee?
00:31:06 >> Yes.
00:31:09 >> Where's Roy? He wasn't here when I started my shower, and his bed's still made.
00:31:16 >> I don't know. He wasn't in the room when I went to sleep last night either. Maybe he went for a walk or something.
00:31:22 Anyway, what's the plan?
00:31:24 >> I'll call Sam and see if those guys are ready for some breakfast. In what, 15 minutes?
00:31:29 >> Yeah, that sounds pretty good. No, wait. Actually, make it 20 minutes, okay?
00:31:34 >> You got it.
00:31:36 >> Thanks.
00:31:45 >> Up in the country, the day the spreader broke, we went to town for parts, I and my neighbor, a man of furrowed years,
00:31:53 knowing every mile of corn and beans along the road like so many freckles on his arm, whether good soil or bad, and how the drainage was.
00:32:02 >> Bean on deer, tires as big as a box.
00:32:06 >> It's a good list. It's a good place to get them.
00:32:09 I like eggs over easy, toast, bacon, you know, the regular breakfast thing.
00:32:15 >> Hey, Roy.
00:32:16 >> Hey. You guys going to sleep your life away?
00:32:19 >> We were going to get something to eat. Like to join us?
00:32:22 >> I've already eaten.
00:32:24 >> Come on. Have some more coffee.
00:32:26 >> Sure. But let's see what the poet has to say first.
00:32:31 >> Yeah.
00:32:33 >> Thank you.
00:32:37 Soybeans.
00:32:39 The October air was warm and musky, blowing over brown fields, heavy with the fragrance of freshly combined beans, the breath of harvest.
00:32:48 He was pulling a truckload onto the scales at the elevator near the rail siding north of town when a big Cadillac drove up.
00:32:55 A man stepped out wearing a three-piece suit and a gold pinky ring.
00:33:00 The man said he had just invested a hundred grand in soybeans and wanted to see what they looked like.
00:33:05 The farmer stared at the man and was quiet, reaching for the tobacco in the rear pocket of his jeans where he wore his only ring,
00:33:13 a threadbare circle rubbed by working cans of dip and long hours on the backside of a hundred-acre run.
00:33:19 He scooped up a handful of small white beans, the pearls of the prairie, saying,
00:33:24 "Soybeans look like a foot of water on the field in April when you're ready to plant and can't get in,
00:33:30 like three kids at the kitchen table eating macaroni and cheese five nights in a row,
00:33:35 or like a broken part on the combine when your credit with the implement dealer is nearly tapped.
00:33:40 Soybeans look like prayers bouncing off the ceiling when prices on the Chicago grain market start to drop,
00:33:46 or like your old man's tears when you tell him how much the land might bring for subdivisions.
00:33:51 Soybeans look like the first good night of sleep in weeks when you unload at the elevator and the kids get Christmas."
00:33:58 He spat a little juice on the tire of the Cadillac, laughing to spite himself and saying to the man,
00:34:04 "Now maybe you can tell me what a hundred grand looks like."
00:34:08 [Applause]
00:34:11 I found out how to get to the museum.
00:34:29 How's that?
00:34:30 Go out to the main road and turn left, and it's, go four blocks and then take a right,
00:34:34 and it's supposed to be on the corner there, so should be no problem.
00:34:37 Hi, y'all with the pork producers?
00:34:39 No, we're just visiting. I'm from New Jersey.
00:34:42 I'm from Gotta Big One. You wanna see?
00:34:44 Sam. You'll have to excuse my friend. He's from South Florida.
00:34:48 Lack of ocean water has affected his brain.
00:34:50 Right.
00:34:51 Oh, that's all right. I can see I got the wrong kind of plumbing for such a big man anyhow.
00:34:55 Yeah, well, you're nuts. Besides, what does some pig farmer from Hicksville know about anything anyway?
00:35:00 Sam, just stop it. Settle down.
00:35:02 What? Dan's not interested in her. He's got the hots for that waitress over at the coffee shop.
00:35:08 What's her name? Barbara?
00:35:11 Jesus, Sam. What is it with you?
00:35:12 Women should be treated with respect.
00:35:14 Like an exquisite flower?
00:35:16 Fine. I'm sorry.
00:35:19 Hey, Roy.
00:35:20 There's nothing I like better in a good pissing contest, except maybe a good drag race.
00:35:25 What about it, Dan?
00:35:27 What about what?
00:35:28 You and me and those two rods out on the street. A race to the finish. Mono e Mono.
00:35:33 We can't just take those cars.
00:35:35 Sure we can. I've talked to the owners and they said it's fine.
00:35:38 Anyway, I told them you're an up-and-coming Indy race car driver and I'm Fireball Robbins.
00:35:43 You don't know much about drag racing, do you? What about it, Dan?
00:35:47 I can't race you. What if we wreck the cars or if we get hurt?
00:35:50 Come on, let's do it. Loser buys the first round tonight.
00:35:53 You're nuts. Why would I want to race you?
00:35:55 Why not? What else is there to do?
00:35:57 Why are you taunting me? What did I ever do to you?
00:35:59 Everything.
00:36:01 I can't race you.
00:36:03 Look, your old man would be out on the car revving it up by now.
00:36:07 Hell, he's probably looking down on you ready to disown you right now.
00:36:11 Unless you're chicken.
00:36:14 Leave him out of this. I'm not afraid of you.
00:36:16 You want to race me? To the finish? Fine. Let's do it.
00:36:20 Let's do it. The old drag strip south of town.
00:36:23 Good luck, Dan!
00:36:24 Do you think they'll be okay? I mean, do they know what they're doing?
00:36:27 I sure as hell hope so.
00:36:29 Ready? On your mark. Get set. Go!
00:36:36 [Music]
00:37:05 Where'd you learn to drive like that?
00:37:07 I've been around. It's good to know I can still be the pro, though.
00:37:10 Wait a minute. How'd you know I used to race?
00:37:12 Well, you told me your father used to love racing and he bought you a car when you were 16.
00:37:16 So I just put two and two together.
00:37:18 So, why did you quit?
00:37:21 Well, you know, my wife, Tabitha, after my accident, she...
00:37:24 Well, I wasn't her bad, but she made me promise to quit racing.
00:37:27 That was about three years ago, something like that.
00:37:30 So how do you feel? How do you feel right now?
00:37:34 Oh my God, I feel just amazing. It's like a huge weight has been lifted off my back.
00:37:39 I haven't felt this good since just before she died.
00:37:41 Thank you.
00:37:43 God, that was incredible. Wow! Unbelievable!
00:37:47 Great. Outstanding.
00:37:49 I'll tell you what, guys. Let's tell Barbara, the waitress back at the restaurant, that Dan won the race.
00:37:56 No, come on, guys. We'll just tell her that I lost just by a hair and she'll feel bad for me.
00:38:00 Why do I get the feeling that you're going to get... whatever. Way to go.
00:38:04 See you guys back at the restaurant.
00:38:06 Alright, cool.
00:38:07 I'm so tired, I'm so weary.
00:38:28 The day has been so long.
00:38:31 I'm ready to go.
00:38:35 Oh, please, set me free.
00:38:41 Oh, please, set me free from these chains that are holding me.
00:38:49 Was a time, was a place, that I saw the light.
00:38:56 Now I'm down on my knees.
00:39:01 Oh, please, set me free.
00:39:07 Oh, please, set me free from these bonds that are holding me.
00:39:15 Let me roll, roll, roll away. Let me roll, roll away.
00:39:22 Let me sing, sing, sing away, let me roll, roll, roll away.
00:39:50 God bless you.
00:39:55 I made my day.
00:40:00 Say listen guys, I've got something to do tonight so I won't see you folks until breakfast.
00:40:05 That is, unless you sleep to lunch time.
00:40:06 You need a ride?
00:40:09 Nope.
00:40:10 So tomorrow we're going to the museum and the gravesite, right?
00:40:13 That's the plan.
00:40:14 See you guys later.
00:40:15 See ya.
00:40:16 You know, I wonder where he goes at night.
00:40:19 It's like he's a reverse vampire or something.
00:40:21 Out of sight before the moon rises.
00:40:23 Vampire?
00:40:24 Sam, you have quite an imagination.
00:40:43 Shower feels good after a hot day.
00:40:50 Cheers.
00:40:55 Jane, why did you really come here?
00:41:08 You're starting to sound like Roy.
00:41:20 I don't know.
00:41:26 Things just haven't been right at home for a while.
00:41:32 I should move out.
00:41:34 You know?
00:41:38 In my own place.
00:41:41 Then I broke up with Floyd, my boyfriend.
00:41:49 Or ex-boyfriend.
00:41:52 I'm not in the mood right now.
00:41:59 I don't need to have sex all the time.
00:42:03 Yeah, like I haven't heard that from you before.
00:42:08 It's not just the sex, Jane.
00:42:11 It was like you were somewhere else during dinner tonight.
00:42:14 I've got a lot on my mind.
00:42:17 Well like what?
00:42:18 You don't understand.
00:42:23 You're right, I don't understand.
00:42:25 I can't.
00:42:26 You won't even let me in.
00:42:27 Look, maybe it'd just be easier if we didn't see each other anymore.
00:42:34 Life is too short for all this aggravation.
00:42:38 I'm gonna get something to drink.
00:42:39 Leave your key on the way out.
00:42:45 Maybe it was just too immature.
00:43:06 I'm gonna get some more wine.
00:43:36 Alright?
00:43:37 I'm gonna get some more wine.
00:43:38 Alright?
00:43:38 I'm gonna get some more wine.
00:43:48 Alright?
00:43:53 I'm gonna get some more wine.
00:44:18 Alright?
00:44:28 I'm gonna get some more wine.
00:44:48 So?
00:45:12 That was nice.
00:45:22 I'll be right back.
00:45:37 So, cat got your tongue?
00:45:40 No, I'm fine.
00:45:43 No?
00:45:44 Things...
00:45:45 Okay?
00:45:46 You missed breakfast.
00:45:48 I've already eaten.
00:45:51 You guys ready to go?
00:45:55 Yeah.
00:45:56 Hey, why don't you stay with me for a minute?
00:46:00 Sure.
00:46:01 Okay, well, let's meet at the museum in half an hour?
00:46:06 Yes.
00:46:07 Make it an hour.
00:46:08 I've got some things I want to do.
00:46:10 Okay.
00:46:11 Let's go.
00:46:12 I should have known better.
00:46:13 I mean, he's married.
00:46:14 It's not a disease, you know.
00:46:15 Well, he has a daughter.
00:46:16 I'm just so...
00:46:17 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:18 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:19 I'm just so...
00:46:20 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:21 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:22 I'm just so...
00:46:23 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:24 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:25 I'm just so...
00:46:26 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:27 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:28 I'm just so...
00:46:29 I'm just so...
00:46:30 I'm just so...
00:46:31 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:32 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:33 I'm just so...
00:46:34 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:35 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:36 I'm just so...
00:46:37 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:38 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:39 I'm just so...
00:46:40 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:41 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:42 I'm just so...
00:46:43 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:44 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:45 I'm just so...
00:46:46 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:47 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:46:48 I'm just so...
00:46:49 Look, what happened happens.
00:46:50 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:15 I'm just so...
00:47:22 Look, what happened happens.
00:47:31 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:44 I'm just so...
00:47:45 Look, what happened happens.
00:47:46 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:47 I'm just so...
00:47:48 Look, what happened happens.
00:47:49 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:50 I'm just so...
00:47:51 Look, what happened happens.
00:47:52 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:53 I'm just so...
00:47:54 Look, what happened happens.
00:47:55 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:56 I'm just so...
00:47:57 Look, what happened happens.
00:47:58 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:59 I'm just so...

00:49:26 I'm just so...
00:49:27 Look, what happened happens.
00:49:28 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.

00:49:35 I'm just so...
00:49:36 Look, what happened happens.
00:49:37 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:49:58 I'm just so...
00:49:59 Look, what happened happens.
00:50:00 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:50:01 I'm just so...

00:50:03 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.

00:50:20 Look, what happened happens.
00:50:21 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:50:22 I'm just so...
00:50:23 Look, what happened happens.
00:50:24 And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:50:54 Hello?
00:50:55 Dad?
00:50:56 Honey?
00:50:57 Are you okay?
00:50:58 No, I'm not okay.
00:50:59 I'm pissed off!
00:51:00 Why didn't you tell me Mom ran off that night crying because she found out you were a faggot?
00:51:08 Watch your mouth!
00:51:11 How could you call me that?
00:51:13 Don't change the subject.
00:51:14 You killed Mom!
00:51:18 You murdered her!
00:51:19 Why?
00:51:20 Why?
00:51:21 Jane, I...
00:51:22 I...
00:51:23 Why?
00:51:24 I...
00:51:25 Jane, I didn't kill her!
00:51:27 I loved her.
00:51:30 It's just I couldn't love her the way she needed to be.
00:51:36 How did you find this out?
00:51:37 I was there!
00:51:38 I saw the fight!
00:51:39 I watched her storm out the door!
00:51:40 I was...
00:51:41 I was up!
00:51:42, why?
00:51:53 Why?
00:51:57 Why did this happen?
00:52:03 I didn't get to know her!
00:52:04 Jane, no!
00:52:05 Please, honey.
00:52:07 Slow down.
00:52:09 Take some deep breaths.
00:52:11 Tell me you're okay.
00:52:14 Deep breaths.
00:52:17 Daddy...
00:52:20 Jane, I'm sorry I didn't tell you.
00:52:28 I guess I was trying to protect you.
00:52:33 Am I?
00:52:36 I mean...
00:52:39 You're my real dad, aren't you?
00:52:45 Yes, honey, I am your real dad.
00:52:49 Oh...
00:52:51 Your mom must have...
00:52:55 You know, done it.
00:52:57 What happened?
00:52:59 Jane, I wanted to spare you this.
00:53:04 But now...
00:53:06 I've got to tell you something.
00:53:10 It's gonna hurt you.
00:53:13 But, Jane, you know I love you.
00:53:20 Well, you...
00:53:25 Were an accident.
00:53:27 What?
00:53:28 Jane, I did love your mother.
00:53:32 But we never made love except once, after a New Year's party.
00:53:39 I was very drunk.
00:53:44 I don't remember much of what happened.
00:53:47 But...
00:53:50 I believe your...
00:53:54 Oh, God, this is so difficult for me to say.
00:53:59 I believe she took advantage of the fact that I was drunk.
00:54:05 She was able to excite me.
00:54:08 I don't understand.
00:54:12 You mean, you and Mom never had sex except for this one time?
00:54:16 That's right.
00:54:18 I couldn't get aroused.
00:54:20 I thought it would pass.
00:54:21 I even went to see a doctor.
00:54:24 Which is ironic because that's where I met Bill.
00:54:28 He was a year older than I was.
00:54:31 He invited me to his house for a drink and one thing led to another and...
00:54:38 Soon we were in bed.
00:54:41 That's...
00:54:43 That's when I found out I was gay.
00:54:46 I was very confused back then, very unsure of what to do.
00:54:50 I have made this commitment to your mom.
00:54:56 Things were different, you know, at work and everywhere.
00:55:03 Daddy, I'm sorry.
00:55:06 I mean what I said.
00:55:09 What happened to Bill?
00:55:12 After the accident, I stopped seeing him.
00:55:15 I wanted to spend my energy trying to raise you.
00:55:18 Jane, I'm...
00:55:19 Daddy, I love you.
00:55:22 I'll always love you.
00:55:25 I love you, sweetheart.
00:55:32 Jane, how's the trip going?
00:55:36 It's great.
00:55:37 Weird, you know.
00:55:39 The other guys are great.
00:55:44 I'll call you when I get back.
00:55:49 I love you.
00:55:50 Bye.
00:55:52 Bye, sweetheart.
00:56:00 Is she okay?
00:56:02 Yeah.
00:56:04 She's fine.
00:56:08 I should have told her sooner.
00:56:12 But she knows now.
00:56:32 Hey, I just saw Jane in the alley.
00:56:50 Is she okay?
00:56:51 She'll be fine.
00:56:53 You look like you could use another cup of coffee.
00:56:57 We'll miss the others.
00:56:58 It's almost time to meet them at the museum.
00:57:00 It's Sunday.
00:57:01 The museum doesn't open until noon.
00:57:03 Okay.
00:57:12 Why didn't you mention it being Sunday earlier?
00:57:15 You know, when we were all here having breakfast?
00:57:18 To tell you the truth, I was trying to figure out what day it is myself.
00:57:22 But time marches on.
00:57:24 You're a strange dude, you know that?
00:57:26 Sometimes I wonder.
00:57:28 Yeah, I've heard that before.
00:57:31 Sam, when are you going to come out?
00:57:36 What is it with everyone?
00:57:38 First the towel head, now you.
00:57:40 I'm not gay, okay?
00:57:46 Maybe I'm a little bisexual.
00:57:50 You know, kind of gay.
00:57:52 You mean like being kind of pregnant?
00:57:55 Kind of gay my ass.
00:57:57 Look, no one's going to love you unless you can learn to love yourself.
00:58:04 And you can't love yourself unless you accept yourself.
00:58:08 Don't you understand?
00:58:11 You're a gay man.
00:58:12 You're still a man.
00:58:14 Just gay.
00:58:16 Anyway, just trust your instincts.
00:58:20 If your friends have a problem with you being gay, then screw them.
00:58:25 And your mom, just give your mom some time.
00:58:29 She'll always love you.
00:58:32 What else matters?
00:58:34 What else matters?
00:58:36 About my job, the people I know.
00:58:39 No, you don't have to wear a poster and you don't have to tell the whole world.
00:58:44 Stop lying to yourself and the people who are most important to you.
00:58:52 It's that easy?
00:58:54 It's not easy.
00:58:57 It's damn hard.
00:58:59 No one said that life is easy or that life is fair.
00:59:04 You just play the cards that you're dealt.
00:59:09 Sam.
00:59:11 You have something you want to tell me?
00:59:19 [sigh]
00:59:21 I'm gay.
00:59:29 Yeah.
00:59:33 I'm gay.
00:59:35 See, that didn't kill you, did it?
00:59:38 Let's go find the others at the museum, alright?
00:59:43 [music]
00:59:45 There you guys are.
00:59:53 We're heading to the grave site. The museum doesn't open for another hour.
00:59:56 You guys go on. I was there this morning.
01:00:00 Hey, I'll meet everyone at the museum, okay?
01:00:02 Alright, see ya.
01:00:04 Hey guys, hold up. I have something I have to say.
01:00:10 I'm gay.
01:00:12 Surprise, surprise. Come on, let's go.
01:00:14 Good for you. Let's go.
01:00:16 [music]
01:00:18 [music]
01:00:20 [music]
01:00:22 [music]
01:00:51 Based on Sid Baysway's award-winning novel, Southwest of Paradise,
01:00:55 Eddie's character Bobby finds his long-lost mother Hallie at a brothel.
01:01:18 Hey cutie, I'm gonna give you a freebie.
01:01:22 [knocking]
01:01:35 It's open.
01:01:37 Hey sweetie.
01:01:44 That'll be five dollars and you pay me now.
01:01:48 Come on. If you don't pay, you can't play.
01:01:56 Look.
01:02:03 If you're thinking of hurting me,
01:02:06 you better think again.
01:02:09 I'll break every bone in your body.
01:02:14 Mama, don't you recognize me? I'm Bobby.
01:02:17 Okay.
01:02:23 So that's the game you want to play.
01:02:25 Sure, honey.
01:02:28 Come on to mommy.
01:02:31 I'll make you feel better.
01:02:33 No, I am your son.
01:02:35 Tom Baker's my father.
01:02:41 Tom Baker?
01:02:43 What did you say your name was?
01:02:47 Bobby.
01:02:50 Mama, why did you leave us?
01:02:54 So what did your papa tell you?
01:02:59 Nothing. He just said that you died when I was born.
01:03:04 Listen, Bobby.
01:03:10 Your papa raped me.
01:03:12 My papa worked at the store your grandfather owned.
01:03:18 I was just 13 years old.
01:03:21 Your papa was a crazy person back then.
01:03:27 Is your grandpapa still alive?
01:03:36 No, ma'am. He died just a few years ago.
01:03:40 Well, when you were born,
01:03:48 your grandpapa gave my family $200 and told them to send me away.
01:03:54 $200 bucks!
01:03:57 My papa gave me $30 and sent me to San Francisco.
01:04:04 And he kept the rest.
01:04:06 I've been fending for myself ever since.
01:04:13 Wasn't that great?
01:04:20 Of course, it was based on an award-winning novel.
01:04:22 But three movies, that's all he left us.
01:04:25 I wonder if Eddie Ray had any idea of the influences he would have on world culture.
01:04:29 Or how he would be marketed.
01:04:31 You know, selling everything from cups to jeans.
01:04:34 Well, I'd like to think he would be mad as hell about them co-opting him.
01:04:39 I don't know.
01:04:46 I think he's a little too much.
01:04:49 I don't know.
01:04:53 I don't know.
01:04:55 Hey, Roy.
01:05:09 Hey, guys.
01:05:11 I saw what was the gravesite.
01:05:13 It was okay. I felt something.
01:05:16 I don't know.
01:05:19 Yeah. There were definitely some vibes there.
01:05:22 I felt something too.
01:05:24 Vibes.
01:05:26 At a gravesite.
01:05:28 You guys are...
01:05:30 Yeah, never mind.
01:05:32 It's $5.50 apiece to get in this place.
01:05:36 [clatter]
01:05:38 [music]
01:05:41 Welcome to the Eddie Ray Museum.
01:05:54 This home is one of the places that Eddie Ray lived in during the time he lived in Fairview.
01:05:59 The museum opened in 1968, ten years after his tragic death.
01:06:04 We've had visitors from all 50 states and over 40 countries.
01:06:08 Even people from Little Monaco, the smallest country in the world, have visited here.
01:06:12 Um, I thought Vatican City was the smallest country in the world.
01:06:16 We don't count that.
01:06:18 Everything here is from the collection of Mr. Edward K. Hunter,
01:06:22 who started collecting Eddie Ray memorabilia while he was a teenager, shortly after Eddie Ray's death.
01:06:28 Mr. Hunter also authored the book "Will the Real Eddie Ray Please Stand Up?"
01:06:32 which received critical acclaim and is on sale in our gift shop.
01:06:35 Now if you'll all follow me, we'll begin the tour.
01:06:38 [music]
01:06:40 You must accept the past and embrace the future.
01:06:59 It's like a huge weight is lifted off my back.
01:07:02 You should be on the lookout for a nice girl like Rose.
01:07:05 Look, I'm not...
01:07:06 I'm gay.
01:07:07 You murdered her.
01:07:12 You murdered her.
01:07:13 You're not in the mood right now.
01:07:15 You are my real dad.
01:07:16 You are my real dad.
01:07:17 Aren't you?
01:07:18 Aren't you?
01:07:19 I gave up trying to understand you a long time ago.
01:07:22 I have been trying to understand myself.
01:07:27 And that concludes our tour.
01:07:29 I hope you've enjoyed our museum.
01:07:31 Please feel free to roam around.
01:07:33 If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
01:07:35 Or you can always visit the gift shop.
01:07:38 Oh, Jane, let's visit the gift shop.
01:07:40 That's some black.
01:07:53 I like it.
01:07:54 Hey, you young man.
01:08:03 Yes?
01:08:04 Don't speak to me like that.
01:08:07 What day is this?
01:08:09 Beg your pardon?
01:08:10 Didn't you hear me? I asked you what day it is.
01:08:13 It's day Sunday.
01:08:17 Do you need any help?
01:08:19 Are you crazy? Of course I need help.
01:08:23 I mean...
01:08:25 You look familiar. Don't I know you?
01:08:33 Lordy, it's you. Praise the Lord, it's you. Ain't it?
01:08:45 It's good to see you again.
01:08:49 How have you been?
01:08:50 You look like shit. What happened?
01:08:53 Why are you here?
01:08:55 Are you going to take me away?
01:08:57 No, it's not your time yet.
01:09:03 Mother!
01:09:10 Mother, are you bothering this nice man?
01:09:15 You promised you wouldn't run off with him.
01:09:18 You promised you wouldn't run off like that.
01:09:20 We said we were going to stay together.
01:09:22 Well, I... I was just... I don't remember.
01:09:27 Now go back and see Annette, okay?
01:09:30 I'm sorry, she's just... she's just very forgetful.
01:09:39 Mom loves coming to the museum, but her dementia is getting worse.
01:09:43 It's difficult. She's not that old.
01:09:47 I'm sorry to hear that. She was no trouble at all.
01:09:50 How long has she been like that?
01:09:52 Oh, it's been about a year.
01:09:54 Well, at least that's when we first noticed.
01:09:56 We moved her in with us about six months ago.
01:09:59 I gotta go. Thank you.
01:10:02 Sure.
01:10:03 Human mind is so fragile.
01:10:15 It makes you realize how lucky you are.
01:10:20 I better go get the others. We need to be heading back to Annapolis soon.
01:10:32 I'm going back to the van.
01:10:35 Alright.
01:10:37 [door opens]
01:10:39 Thanks again, Mary Poppins.
01:10:57 Sure. I see you met Irene.
01:10:59 Yeah, I did.
01:11:01 She's the last one living, you know.
01:11:04 What do you mean?
01:11:06 She's the last person from Fairview who is still alive who knew Eddie Ray.
01:11:10 Of course, she was four years old at the time, but still.
01:11:14 Eddie was her cousin.
01:11:16 Really?
01:11:17 You know, it's odd.
01:11:19 Everyone from Fairview who knew Eddie Ray either moved away or died an early death.
01:11:25 Some folks say it's a curse on the town.
01:11:29 Some even blame us for this death.
01:11:33 [piano music]
01:11:34 Wow. You have a safe trip now. Thanks for coming.
01:11:38 Yeah, thanks.
01:11:41 Come back anytime.
01:11:43 See ya.
01:11:44 Bye.
01:11:45 [piano music]
01:11:48 [door opens]
01:11:51 [door closes]
01:11:54 [traffic]
01:12:00 [piano music]
01:12:02 Adam, you better pull over for some gas.
01:12:27 That's a good idea.
01:12:29 [traffic]
01:12:32 [car door closes]
01:12:51 [music]

01:13:19 [music]
01:13:22 [music]
01:13:25 [music]
01:13:28 Right.
01:13:31 [music]
01:13:32 Yeah?
01:13:34 I don't know what happened back there.
01:13:39 But I don't believe your name is really Roy.
01:13:43 I never said my name was Roy. I said that's what some folks call me.
01:13:47 So who do you think I am?
01:13:49 I don't believe in ghosts.
01:13:51 Well, I didn't believe.
01:13:59 Hell, now I'm not so sure.
01:14:01 A ghost.
01:14:02 This ghost.
01:14:04 Eddie Ray's ghost.
01:14:12 You've got to be kidding me.
01:14:16 You've known me for three days and you still don't know anything.
01:14:19 Christ, man, I don't look anything like Eddie Ray.
01:14:22 He was, what, 24 years old when he died?
01:14:24 Well, maybe after you die you continue to age.
01:14:27 If that's the case, I'd be a hell of a lot older, wouldn't I?
01:14:29 I'd be, what, 72.
01:14:31 All right, I don't know.
01:14:33 But that woman, back in Fairview,
01:14:37 she acted like she knew you.
01:14:40 So?
01:14:41 So she's the last living person from Fairview who knew Eddie Ray before he died.
01:14:46 She was, what, nine years old when he left town?
01:14:50 You know, you're nuts.
01:14:52 In case you didn't notice, that lady is feeble-minded.
01:14:56 Anyway,
01:14:57 I was just being nice to her.
01:15:01 She reminded me of someone I used to know.
01:15:04 All right.
01:15:09 What about your outburst the other day at the drive?
01:15:13 I was wondering when you were going to ask me about that again.
01:15:17 You wouldn't understand.
01:15:24 When you look at the leaves on a tree,
01:15:26 the sunset,
01:15:29 the field of wildflowers,
01:15:32 damn it, you don't get it.
01:15:36 No.
01:15:37 What are you talking about?
01:15:41 This is a gift.
01:15:54 Like a bouquet of flowers.
01:15:56 With the smell of fresh-baked sweet tea.
01:16:02 Treasure.
01:16:06 It's all too soon,
01:16:09 it will be gone.
01:16:13 And when it's gone, it's gone forever.
01:16:22 Answers?
01:16:23 The answers are not out there somewhere.
01:16:28 They're inside.
01:16:30 A ghost?
01:16:35 I don't know what a ghost is.
01:16:39 As a matter of fact, right now, I don't know what anything is.
01:16:44 So, Adam,
01:16:49 why did you come to Fairfield?
01:16:51 Did you find the answers you're looking for?
01:16:54 I came on this trip
01:17:02 looking for answers.
01:17:04 And I learned
01:17:09 that I can't find those answers
01:17:13 in the arms of another woman or
01:17:16 in some faraway place.
01:17:18 Or in some far-off distant place.
01:17:20 What I know now in my heart
01:17:23 is that the greatest gift in the world
01:17:31 is the love
01:17:34 my family gives to me.
01:17:36 And the love I give to them.
01:17:41 And I will never, ever...
01:17:46 Okay.
01:17:48 This is where I say goodbye.
01:17:50 You're not coming back to Indianapolis with us?
01:17:54 No.
01:17:56 What am I going to tell the others?
01:17:59 They won't ask.
01:18:00 They won't remember.
01:18:02 Will I remember you?
01:18:06 Maybe.
01:18:08 Maybe not.
01:18:11 Maybe I'll remember you too.
01:18:15 Maybe only in your dreams.
01:18:17 So...
01:18:20 You are Eddie Ray's ghost.
01:18:24 Those are your words, Adam, not mine.
01:18:28 Just remember.
01:18:31 You can't find the answers in Fairview.
01:18:35 Fairview is just another small town
01:18:38 somewhere in Indiana.
01:18:41 [Humming]
01:18:43 [Humming]
01:18:45 [Humming]
01:18:47 [Humming]
01:18:51 [Humming]
01:18:59 [Humming]
01:19:07 [Humming]
01:19:09 Okay. Ready to roll?
01:19:25 Sure.
01:19:27 You ready to go home?
01:19:28 Yep.
01:19:30 I mean, yes, I'm ready.
01:19:35 Matt, here I come.
01:19:36 Not in the back seat, you're not.
01:19:38 This has been quite a trip.
01:19:41 I came out of the closet,
01:19:42 and Jane phoned her father and called him everything but a white man,
01:19:46 and then made up with him.
01:19:47 And Dan's ready to move on with his life, but...
01:19:49 What about you, Adam?
01:19:51 I'm fine.
01:19:54 I mean...
01:19:56 Yeah.
01:19:58 I'm fine.
01:19:59 Let's go.
01:20:04 [Dramatic music]
01:20:06 Jane...
01:20:11 I want you to know that...
01:20:14 You don't...
01:20:15 have to say anything.
01:20:18 Just give your wife a big kiss for me.
01:20:23 I know you love her.
01:20:27 And maybe...
01:20:31 we shouldn't...
01:20:33 you know?
01:20:34 Well, you know.
01:20:35 Yeah.
01:20:37 I understand.
01:20:41 So what are you gonna...
01:20:44 He's not the guy from the drive-in?
01:21:01 Hey, remember me?
01:21:02 Need some help?
01:21:05 Nah, she just overheated.
01:21:06 It'll be okay in a couple of minutes.
01:21:07 I do remember you, from the other day.
01:21:11 Right.
01:21:12 Got me to thinking about what happened.
01:21:13 You know when them kids were killed?
01:21:14 I dug out of old clipping,
01:21:15 and it seems that three teenagers were killed that night,
01:21:17 and two kids survived.
01:21:18 Really?
01:21:20 Yeah.
01:21:21 This girl was babysitting a four-year-old boy,
01:21:23 and she was supposed to be home watching him.
01:21:25 Well, she took him with her on this date.
01:21:27 And the wreck threw him from the car,
01:21:28 they landed in a big haystack.
01:21:30 The girl wasn't hurt too bad,
01:21:31 but the boy was in real bad shape,
01:21:33 touch and go.
01:21:34 I remember my mom telling me about it.
01:21:36 The parents took him down to a children's hospital down south,
01:21:38 and they moved away a couple months later
01:21:40 to be closer to the hospital.
01:21:41 I don't know if he recovered,
01:21:44 but I believe he did.
01:21:45 That's strange.
01:21:47 They were both pretty lucky.
01:21:48 Oh, yeah.
01:21:49 Irene and Roy were lucky kids.
01:21:50 Did you say Irene and Roy?
01:21:53 Yeah, Irene.
01:21:54 Eddie Ray's cousin.
01:21:56 She's still alive.
01:21:57 The little boy's real name was Michael Raymond,
01:21:59 and I guess everybody called him Roy
01:22:02 because he liked to play cowboys
01:22:03 and he had this toy gun set he wore around all the time.
01:22:05 That's weird.
01:22:07 Do you remember the guy who was with us the other day
01:22:10 throwing rocks at your screen?
01:22:11 No.
01:22:14 I remember you and the other folks in the van.
01:22:17 Was there someone else with you?
01:22:19 Come on.
01:22:20 All right, never mind.
01:22:28 You sure you don't need some help?
01:22:29 Nah, I'll be all right.
01:22:30 You folks come back and see us.
01:22:32 You know, you really ought to visit
01:22:37 during the Eddie Ray Festival in September.
01:22:38 It's quite an event.
01:22:40 We'll see if we can.
01:22:41 Thanks.
01:22:42 Take care.
01:22:44 This is not a movie, baby
01:22:47 A happy ending is not guaranteed
01:22:51 And this is not one of those songs for the radio
01:22:55 You're not gonna write this one so easily
01:22:59 We've been talking for hours about it
01:23:03 But you could tell me so much more with just one kiss
01:23:07 I've been searching inside your big brown eyes
01:23:12 The more I see, the greater the mystery
01:23:15 Is this what I've been waiting for?
01:23:19 Just to know I don't know anymore
01:23:23 Is this what I've been waiting for?
01:23:28 This is not a lesson, honey
01:23:35 I'm not learning anything
01:23:38 It was almost a year ago that I visited Fairview.
01:23:42 Now I'm working as a freelance copywriter
01:23:44 and marketing consultant.
01:23:46 Sam was promoted to shift supervisor.
01:23:49 Dan is engaged.
01:23:51 And Jane has an apartment, a cat, and a lover
01:23:56 in that order of importance.
01:23:57 Sometimes I wonder about
01:24:00 what actually took place last summer.
01:24:02 Who was Roy?
01:24:04 Was he real?
01:24:07 Or just a figment of my imagination?
01:24:10 Is this what I've been waiting for?
