00:00 Instagram really had a lot of changes
00:01 in order to keep up with TikTok,
00:03 but there are some things you might've missed.
00:05 (upbeat music)
00:07 What's going on?
00:09 It's Andy here, and Instagram has always been the platform
00:12 that so many of us have come to know and love.
00:15 However, the media landscape has changed so much,
00:17 and a lot of people saw just as many changes
00:20 within the platform as well.
00:21 As many remember, in early 2022,
00:24 Instagram was having a lot of trouble
00:25 competing with TikTok.
00:26 Instagram used to be the go-to platform
00:28 for all things content,
00:30 but the platform that many used to associate
00:32 with cringy dances, otherwise known as TikTok, diversified.
00:36 (upbeat music)
00:38 Throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s,
00:47 a rapid amount of users rushed to TikTok
00:49 with a lot of companies, including Instagram,
00:52 unprepared to lose a majority of their creators
00:54 and overall audience.
00:55 Many of us saw in early 2022,
00:57 CEO Adam Mossery approach the general public
01:00 with what he and his company believed that everyone wanted,
01:03 more video content.
01:05 - The second thing I'm hearing a lot of concerns
01:06 about right now are photos and how we're shifting to video.
01:10 Now, I wanna be clear.
01:11 We're gonna continue to support photos.
01:13 It's part of our heritage.
01:14 I love photos.
01:15 I know a lot of you out there love photos too.
01:17 - Yeah, in the video, Mossery stated the platform
01:20 would move towards serving even more video content.
01:23 He said the platform would continue to promote photos,
01:25 but he believed that Instagram users
01:27 would naturally be consuming more videos,
01:29 whether they just liked it or not.
01:31 The general public, especially the creators
01:33 that helped build the platform,
01:35 didn't seem fond of this new change,
01:37 seeing that they'd be forced to make video content
01:39 in order to stay relevant on any platform, it seems like.
01:42 Even celebrities like the Kardashians
01:44 posted the infamous graphic,
01:45 pleading for Instagram to stay how it is.
01:47 Photos, please.
01:49 Obviously, in order to combat all of the bad press
01:51 going against the parent company, Meta,
01:53 many thought that the brand started shoveling out money
01:56 for events with creators.
01:57 I mean, this theory might be true.
01:59 Throughout the year, creators and other talent
02:01 saw things like Instagram's summer party at Nobu,
02:04 and the sushi was very good, must I say.
02:06 I did have some.
02:07 A Rolling Stone creator issue party in the Hollywood Hills,
02:10 and a Creator Week celebration party
02:12 plugging all of Instagram's talent
02:14 and new features to be rolled out.
02:16 Some thought these initiatives
02:17 were to keep Instagram top of mind for creators
02:19 and retain their talent from going elsewhere.
02:21 Others thought it was Instagram's way
02:23 to finally give back to the creators
02:25 that helped make it what it is today.
02:26 As of now, we've seen Instagram roll back its efforts
02:28 on videos and still feature photos.
02:31 However, Instagram is still recommending
02:32 a ton of reels in users' feeds
02:34 and coming out with features like filters
02:36 and more specifically, you know, for video.
02:38 But obviously, in the end, you're the best judge.
02:40 You obviously are seeing all the things on Instagram change.
02:43 We're not sure what's gonna happen quite yet,
02:45 but I have definitely been consuming a lot more reels,
02:47 even though people have said
02:49 that there are gonna be less videos
02:50 featured on the platform.
02:52 Anyway, Andy here.
02:53 We'll chat with you soon.
