Man armed with a large knife shot dead by NSW Police

Police in New South Wales have fatally shot a 43-year-old man in Sydney’s inner west. Officers say he charged at them with a large knife. The man was known to police for other unrelated incidents.

00:00 A critical incident investigation is now underway after a 43-year-old man was shot dead by police
00:07 at an apartment in Glebe overnight.
00:09 Officers say they were first called to the Glebe apartment for a welfare check on the
00:13 man.
00:14 When they arrived, however, they were confronted with blood at the door.
00:16 Police say when they entered their house, they were confronted with a man wielding a
00:19 large carving knife towards them.
00:22 It's then understood police attempted to use a taser, but police have now said that that
00:26 was actually unoperational at the time and that is why the gun was used to shoot the
00:30 man.
00:31 Paramedics attended to the man, but unfortunately his injuries were too severe and he couldn't
00:34 be saved.
00:35 Police say the whole incident unravelled in a matter of seconds and that the man was well
00:39 known to them.
00:40 As an officer did so, announcing their office as they walked into the unit, which was lit
00:45 at the time, they were confronted by a man who came towards them armed with quite a large
00:52 carving knife.
00:54 An officer deployed a taser which was inoperative.
00:59 A second officer discharged one round from his firearm which struck the man.
01:05 He is deceased as a result.
