whats next for saquon and giants
Transcript
00:00 With the outcome of New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley's contract situation not being what Barkley or the team had hoped for, what's next?
00:10 Well, the obvious answer is that Barkley is not expected to show up for training camp, which opens July 25th.
00:17 The running back is, in fact, likely to skip most of summer training period, perhaps waiting until after the team concludes its preseason game schedule before showing up to get into game shape for the 2023 season opener.
00:31 But Barkley has also said that he hasn't ruled out potentially sitting out some of the season, a move he really doesn't want to make.
00:38 However, doing so would come at a cost of roughly $560,000 per week, money of which would be credited back to the Giants salary cap, therefore helping the team.
00:48 So where do they go from here?
00:50 Well, the most obvious win-win for both sides at this point would be for the Giants to up the one-year franchise tag amount for the running back, which right now stands at $10.1 million,
01:01 and increase that to the equivalent of the APY from their last offer, which was reportedly $11 million per year.
01:08 Another thing the Giants could do is include a clause in the franchise tag offer promising that they won't use the franchise tag again on the running back in 2024.
01:19 But from the Giants' perspective, they're unlikely to make that second concession, at least not until they see how the other running backs in camp,
01:27 Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell, Ja'Shaun Corbin, and rookie Eric Gray, handle the offense.
01:33 Eventually, Barkley is going to play this coming season.
01:36 There's just no way he sits out the entire campaign, not after all the training he's gone through this past offseason.
01:43 But unless emotions die down and common sense kicks in, it's certainly fair to wonder if this is the beginning of the end of Barkley's relationship with a team that believed in him enough to make him the number two overall draft pick in 2022.
01:56 And that's the end of our topic in 2018.
