00:18 >> Cameras all good in the back? Thank you.
00:21 >> Rory, go ahead.
00:23 >> Hi, Stuart. Lots going on with the team and everything,
00:27 but just to talk about yourself for a moment, 600, must be really proud.
00:31 >> Yeah, really special. I think it's got a nice ring to it,
00:35 getting the 600th test wicket from the James Anderson end as well,
00:38 you know, something pretty special about that.
00:40 So, yeah, I mean, ultimately it felt a pretty important wicket in the day.
00:45 We chatted at tea. Obviously Trav was smashing the ball when we over-pitched.
00:51 So, we had a little chat at tea. I was going to start at the far end
00:56 and change tactics slightly. So, for that to work straight away after tea was great.
01:03 And, you know, a bit disappointed I didn't make another breakthrough.
01:05 I just had it moving away nicely with the wind, a couple of close outside edges.
01:10 But, yeah, ultimately I think I got my 500th test wicket here in front of no crowd,
01:15 but my dad was here because he was match ref.
01:18 So, to get a, you know, it felt very special to get a bit of innovation today
01:23 from the old Trafford crowd who, you know, I've always loved playing here.
01:27 So, to, you know, get my 600th in front of a full house in the first day of an Ashes test
01:32 is pretty memorable.
01:34 I was looking back on your quotes from that day when you got 500.
01:37 You didn't seem at all sure you would get to 600.
01:40 You've lived quite a journey since then.
01:43 To get here and be, I don't know, top of the Ashes wicket pile,
01:47 you feel like you've got another few more in you yet?
01:49 Yeah, I'm bowling really nicely, I think. I didn't bowl great today.
01:52 It felt pretty tough conditions out there today.
01:55 But, you know, throughout the series I feel like I've kept running in.
02:00 I feel physically good.
02:02 And, you know, whenever Stokes has thrown me the ball,
02:04 I feel like I've tried to have a bit of an impact.
02:07 So, I really enjoyed bowling at Headingley.
02:09 I thought that was a fantastic test match pitch.
02:11 And, you know, it's hard to judge a pitch here until you've seen both teams bowl and bat on it.
02:16 But, ultimately, the sun was out for quite a lot of the day.
02:19 So, I think we've battled really well to get eight wickets today.
02:22 And just with the match situation, I guess it felt like Ben chucked the ball to you
02:26 because he wanted to push the game forward and move things on,
02:29 artificially almost, because of the rain that's expected.
02:32 And Australia have a very deep batting line-up.
02:35 Does today look like a, I don't know, not a best-case scenario,
02:37 but a pretty good day in terms of moving this game forward?
02:40 Yeah, it's quite hard to judge until you see what conditions are like.
02:44 I think with the sun was out, it was quite noticeable the ball did quite a bit less.
02:47 When we got a bit of cloud, it did move.
02:50 So, hopefully, the clouds aren't too heavy over the next couple of days.
02:53 Ultimately, the aim will be to get a first-innings lead and set up a chase.
02:59 It seems the forecast is a bit around at the weekend, isn't there?
03:03 But you never quite know if it stays true or leaks through, really.
03:07 So, I think it's been a bit of a trademark of this team of bowling first and trying to set up wins.
03:14 So, I know it's a bit of a rarity here at Old Trafford,
03:17 but I think any time you bowl first and take eight wickets on day one, you're pretty chuffed.
03:25 We've got George at the back, Steph Irwin and then Ben Bray.
03:28 Hi, Stuart. What does it tell us about your enthusiasm, I guess, for Test cricket in particular?
03:36 You're at the age where you could have gone into the commentary box or whatever,
03:40 and presumably it doesn't get easier.
03:43 You've kind of reinvented yourself, learnt new skills to stay at this level.
03:48 I've definitely got an addiction to Test cricket, an addiction to the competitive side of it.
03:54 And ultimately, Baz and Stokesy have given me a new lease of life, in a way.
04:02 It's such a free-changing room.
04:06 It does feel in the nicest possible way that you're playing club cricket,
04:12 but you are doing it at the highest level.
04:15 That's such a great place to be as a 37-year-old,
04:19 because you're turning up each day with it being really fun, really enjoyable.
04:24 There's no fear of failure there, there's no judgement,
04:28 and it's all about taking the game forward and moving the game forward.
04:31 I think that suits my style of play as a cricketer.
04:34 I owe a lot in the last 14 months to the way Baz and Stokes have brought energy to the group,
04:40 and I think I've been able to match that energy and move myself forward as a player.
04:45 I've found it really enjoyable.
04:47 I'd argue it's probably been the most enjoyable year of my whole Test career,
04:51 which is an awesome thing to say at 36, 37.
04:55 I think Jimmy would probably say the same at 45.
04:59 I think it's...
05:03 I'm a very competitive person on the field,
05:07 and I think that Australia bring the best out of me on that front,
05:11 because they're so competitive as a group as well.
05:13 So it's great to have been involved in some brilliant battles throughout this summer with Australia,
05:20 and to be honest, I've loved every moment of this series.
05:25 It's been the series that just keeps on giving, really.
05:28 Is there any sense at all, with the way that England are kind of chasing the series,
05:34 that the lost overs with the over-eight are regrettable,
05:39 or is there nothing that can be done, really?
05:41 I know you lost some overs to the Suns.
05:42 It's a tricky one.
05:43 I think there was quite a lot.
05:46 I think it got David Warner out that long delay with the reflection of the Sun.
05:50 It was just a metal bar, I think, but that took quite a bit of time.
05:54 Yeah, what did we lose?
05:56 Seven overs in the day, which is...
05:58 I think that's frustrating for the paying crowd a little bit,
06:03 but ultimately, from us as a group, we didn't feel like we could do loads more.
06:08 We probably fetched the ball from the boundary a bit more than we'd have wanted to today.
06:12 But, yeah, we're going to try and move the game forward pretty quickly from the style of play,
06:21 and we just hope that Manchester weather leans on our side and we get five days' cricket.
06:28 There's one each going forward, so I've got Stephane and then Dan.
06:32 Stuart.
06:33 After you got left out in the Caribbean, you were pretty honest with us,
06:37 saying you thought that might have been the end.
06:39 Since you've been recalled last summer, I don't think any other pace bowler in the world
06:43 has taken as many test wickets as you.
06:45 Top of the pile in this series, presumably those thoughts of the end have been banished for a little while now.
06:50 Yeah, I've been really fortunate that, A, Stokesy gave me the nod to come back last May,
07:00 and I've thoroughly enjoyed every moment of that.
07:05 I think when I did get left out of the West Indies side, I made a commitment to myself that I wasn't--
07:10 I used to tie myself out a little bit by planning too much and looking too far ahead
07:15 and trying to judge where I'd get to.
07:20 So I made a commitment to myself that I was just going to give my heart and soul to each game,
07:24 whether that's for Notts or for England.
07:28 Just enjoy it and then sign off the week with a couple of beers if you win a test match and go again.
07:33 So I think that's worked brilliantly for me under Stokesy and Baz with that mindset.
07:40 I think it's really suited my style of play, not focusing too far ahead.
07:46 So ultimately I never expected to be playing the fourth--
07:51 I played against Ireland as well, so what's this, the fifth test in a row in such a hectic summer?
07:56 So I'm delighted with myself personally that I've been in a physical shape to be able to do that
08:02 and also mentally fresh to keep driving forward.
08:06 So I said if I'd have played two or three, I actually would have been pretty happy.
08:10 So to be playing my fourth and bowling pretty well, I'm delighted.
08:15 Down on the left here.
08:17 Hey, Stuart.
08:18 So I think you played at Hoppers Crossing at a very young age,
08:23 but was it that that first got you up and about to play Australia?
08:28 Or what is it about Australia as opposed to anything else?
08:32 Yeah, I suppose I've got family history with the Ashes and my dad's experience there.
08:38 I grew up completely obsessed with watching Ashes cricket
08:43 and I suppose that's why some of my heroes are Warnie, Glenn McGrath, a lot of the great Aussie team
08:50 because as a kid you are influenced by winning sides and they were a huge winning side.
08:56 But I think it also built up my steeliness to want to be a part of England teams that could win the Ashes as well
09:02 after going through a whole childhood without us lifting them.
09:05 So yeah, I think I probably grew up with a bit more of an Australian mindset
09:11 from watching the Australian team rather than sort of an England mindset in the '90s.
09:17 So a lot of my heroes are them.
09:20 Going to Hoppers Crossing was a great experience for me at 17.
09:23 I opened the batting, opened the bowling, got used to the competitive side of the Australians and loved the battle.
09:30 So yeah, that was an amazing cricketing experience for me to go and experience in Victoria
09:37 and definitely set me up for a professional career for sure.
09:40 Press for Terence, we'll go Will, Louis and then we'll finish with Mel.
09:44 Stuart, Chris Wokes has got a habit of kind of flying under the radar a little bit.
09:48 He's maybe done that again today because you're talking to us here.
09:51 How good has he been these last two games and how important were all those wickets he picked up today?
09:56 Especially that bang, bang over where Johnny took that great catch.
09:59 Yeah, he was awesome today.
10:01 He bowled fantastically and he bowled a lot of his overs from a tough end where the wind was going across and in.
10:06 So it was hard to get the ball to shape away.
10:08 So yeah, he's been exceptional since coming back at Leeds.
10:12 We all know what a talent Chris Wokes has been and what a servant he's been for English cricket.
10:17 I think he's won the 50-over World Cup, the T20 World Cup, bowled some very pressurised balls in those tournaments
10:25 and continues to deliver for us when needed in Test match cricket as well.
10:30 He's a pleasure to play with and he knows exactly what he's doing.
10:35 I think England Test side in England with Chris Wokes in is a pretty formidable side.
10:42 So he was exceptional today.
10:44 He deserves five in the morning hopefully and continues to impress in an England shirt.
10:52 It's a pleasure to play with him.
10:55 Stuart, you mentioned you've been inspired by Australian aggression when you were a kid.
10:59 Were you surprised that they picked eight batters for this Test?
11:03 Did you take that as a defensive option?
11:06 No, not a defensive option.
11:08 I think obviously they probably want to bat as long as they can,
11:12 knowing that a draw is good enough for them in this game to retain the ashes.
11:19 Ultimately when you've got two all-rounders that you both deserve to be in the team, it's a tricky decision.
11:25 Old Trafford historically is a place you probably would want a spinner.
11:33 Moe and Bolt great today, they both had some really wicket-taking deliveries.
11:38 We saw a couple spin to the lefty as well.
11:40 That's something that I'm sure worried them a little bit when they saw.
11:46 Ultimately it looks like a very dangerous team.
11:51 They've got 300 runs on the board with their batting group and we've still got 12 wickets to get in the Test.
11:56 It's been a great battle so far.
12:00 We can judge that sort of selection once two innings have gone.
12:05 Mal Farrell on the side.
12:07 Stuart, for a lot of people if they think of wickets that you've taken in the past,
12:13 that probably involves a seam and swing, typical Stuart Broad stuff.
12:18 Is there any irony in the fact you're getting Travis on the hook and caught out in the deep?
12:24 Is that just a sign of the plans that have been coming into place and are you enjoying the short pitch stuff?
12:31 Definitely.
12:32 Definitely, Boldemort has bounced in the last 14 months than I have done in the previous 14 years.
12:37 It's certainly been a plan of the captain that he wants to go down that route at times.
12:42 It's something I've done for knots on occasions and do enjoy going to that style of bowling.
12:48 I think my height helps with that.
12:49 I don't have to dig the ball in too short.
12:52 Actually there was a clip that came up in the changing room of my 100th, 200th, 300th.
12:58 I think there was a court long on, court mid on, court mid wicket.
13:00 So it's not the old classical dismissal.
13:03 The good thing is it was caught by our leading catcher ever at Joe Roots.
13:08 You can tell my grandkids it was first slip.
13:12 Mike, last one on the list.
13:14 Everyone's had their say about Jonny Berstow this summer, Stu,
13:17 but when he goes and pulls out a catch of the series contender like that,
13:21 the team must be really pleased for him after all the flak he's taken.
13:24 Yeah, you could see the group get around him when that catch went in actually and his celebration.
13:29 He's been an integral part of Buzz's style throughout the 14 months.
13:39 He's been someone who's led that as a group.
13:42 So it was great to see him playing with a big smile on his face.
13:46 I always think with Jonny, if he gains confidence of taking an unbelievable catch like that
13:53 and everyone gets around him and you saw the crowd, great ovation when he took the catch,
13:59 that generally brings in runs as well.
14:01 So that's a good thing for us as a team because Jonny Berstow batting seven
14:11 is a pretty exciting prospect for us as a team.
14:15 Good. Cheers, Brodie.
