00:24 All right, we'll get up the back, everyone.
00:26 Here we go.
00:28 All right, I brought Marnus along to talk to the rat,
00:30 so we can talk to you guys first.
00:32 So Marnus Labashan, half century today.
00:34 So if you've got any questions for Marnus,
00:36 please use the mics wherever they are.
00:38 Anyone?
00:40 Andrew?
00:42 [SILENCE]
00:45 300 for eight, Marnus, on that,
00:47 with a number of the top order getting starts
00:49 and sort of not being able to go on.
00:50 How do you sum up that day from Australia's point of view?
00:54 Yeah, I think anything with a three in front of it
00:57 is all right.
00:59 I think where we were and how many guys got themselves in,
01:04 I think we'd be slightly disappointed with,
01:07 you know, no one getting a big score.
01:10 But I think, you know, the statistics are really skewed here
01:13 in England to first inning scores above 300.
01:17 [SILENCE]
01:21 Marnus, just on a personal note,
01:23 how are you feeling about your batting?
01:24 Was it at least somewhat satisfying to get past 50
01:28 and feel like you'd dug in a bit there?
01:32 Yeah, I mean, for me it was the process that I was happy with.
01:36 I was happy with my decision making,
01:38 which has been the part that's really been frustrating me
01:41 from a personal side.
01:42 But I stuck to the process.
01:46 I felt like we were so close to turning it there,
01:50 Hedy and I, to getting a big, really big partnership together.
01:54 And obviously, yeah, probably a little bit lazy on that,
01:58 that try to turn it to the league side.
02:00 And then no one got me.
02:02 And just in terms of the second innings or later in the match,
02:06 do you expect you'll be bowling a bit more than usual
02:09 given Todd wasn't selected and you were bowling a bit more than nets?
02:12 And if so, do you think you'll be bowling off his leggies or meds or what?
02:16 Well, will I be bowling?
02:21 Hopefully not, because if I'm not bowling,
02:23 it means we're in a pretty good spot.
02:26 But if I need to bowl, I'm always ready, always working on it.
02:29 I think it'll be leggies with the amount of left-handers.
02:32 And obviously there might be some rough there
02:35 if the sun continues to stay up.
02:40 You suggested there might have been a bit of laziness there on your part.
02:44 But just in general, can you put your finger on what it was
02:47 that just meant that just as it looked like there was a threatening partnership forming,
02:53 another wicket managed to fall?
02:56 What was your question?
02:58 Can you put your finger on – because you said in your case
03:02 it might have been a bit of laziness when you got out.
03:04 But as a whole, every time there was a threatening partnership,
03:09 there was another wicket.
03:11 Can you put your finger on why that was that everyone was able to make those starts?
03:14 Yeah, I think the wicket is a little bit too paced.
03:17 It's quite slow, so it's not as – some wickets I've played here
03:23 were just quite quick on day one.
03:25 I think the thatchiness of the grass is really the ball sitting in the wicket a little bit.
03:29 So you're getting a little bit of inconsistent bounce from that.
03:33 I mean, they just showed the ball was nipping for a fair bit of the day
03:38 and Mullen got a few big to spin.
03:40 So I think that's probably it.
03:44 And just – you mentioned Mo again there getting some turn on day one.
03:49 So how are you feeling about – or do you think the team might regret
03:53 not picking a front-line spinner?
03:56 It's going to be interesting to say this, but I think it's one of those wickets where
04:00 I think because the wicket's been undercover for a few days,
04:04 it didn't have that really rock hardness and the thatchiness of the grass is spinning.
04:09 So I think once that wears off, I think the middle of the wicket's going to
04:12 actually not spin so much.
04:14 The ends will rough up I think eventually if the weather stays good.
04:18 But I think it's actually going to spin less as the game goes on
04:21 from the good part of the wicket.
04:24 That's in my opinion.
04:25 On the left here, Martin.
04:27 Hi, Martin.
04:28 Just a question about the general theme of batting across this series.
04:33 Obviously one of the things England do is they're trying to get your wicket throughout.
04:37 You've often seen the rhythm to Test cricket that once a partnership starts
04:40 or a batter gets established, some fielders might drop out,
04:44 you might get a few more opportunities to rotate strike.
04:46 But what's that been like to face up to over these four Tests so far?
04:52 I think England have done a really good job at when someone's getting in,
04:55 trying to not give them continuous strike and continuous ball and trying to –
05:02 I mean today when Trav and I were starting out there, they pretty much –
05:08 I think they had six-three league side field and they were just –
05:12 Stuart was just trying to bowl the innies and sort of try and get me trapped
05:16 on the league side.
05:17 But when someone's bowling like that, you're obviously not going to score
05:20 very freely unless he misses on the offside.
05:23 So I think that's just a tactic to slow down and make you take balls,
05:27 take balls, take balls, and then obviously try and create an opportunity
05:31 when one presents itself.
05:34 Martin, it's just on the different team kind of structure you've got.
05:37 Have you kind of played in a team that has batted as deep as this one?
05:41 And does that change anything as a topwater player kind of knowing you've got
05:45 Kerry at eight that maybe that might be a reason behind a lot of guys
05:49 getting to 40 and getting out?
05:51 I can't talk from each individual's mental state.
05:55 But from my own, no, it doesn't make a difference.
05:58 My job is to come in and score runs and score big runs,
06:01 especially when I get myself in.
06:03 So – and our whole top order, that's our responsibility.
06:08 So if those sorts of thoughts have crept in, then that's probably on the individual
06:13 to make sure we stamp that out if that was a thing for the second innings.
06:17 But I think it gives you confidence as a player because you bat deep.
06:21 And as you were able to see, we were able to build partnership there
06:24 with Kerry and Stark and then Mitch and Greenie.
06:28 And so I think those runs are going to be really vital,
06:31 especially if we can get this lead up to 350.
06:35 That's going to be a pretty decent first innings total.
06:40 Martin, just on your series, you mentioned decision-making
06:43 and how that's sort of been something that's hampered you a bit this series.
06:47 Have you – I guess how have you gone about dealing with that?
06:50 And obviously it feels like there's been a little bit of tinkering
06:52 with your technique, how you set up.
06:54 Have you ever tinkered this much through a series you have this time around?
06:58 And how have you gone with that too?
06:59 Yeah, pretty much every series.
07:02 Yeah, every series is the same thing.
07:05 It just – I think just because I haven't got as many runs as I would have liked,
07:09 I think that's where it's probably coming more to light.
07:14 But, yeah, I mean you can ask the coaches, you can ask anyone.
07:17 It usually goes the same route.
07:20 But from today I was really happy with where I was from a technical space,
07:25 I think, which I've been really striving to get to
07:28 and make those changes to give myself as much access to the ball as I can.
07:32 So I was really happy with that today.
07:34 So hopefully less tinkering for the next few tests.
07:39 Martin, Stuart Broad took his 600th test wicket today.
07:42 You've played quite a lot against him now.
07:44 You've had some good battles.
07:45 You're kind of big characters of Ashes cricket, I suppose.
07:48 Can you just reflect on him as a bowler and kind of what he's like to face?
07:52 And I don't know, maybe the character he brings off the field as well,
07:55 the constant chatter and all that kind of stuff.
07:58 Yeah, I mean his statistics speak for themselves, I think.
08:03 Especially this series, I think he's been very impressive.
08:07 The show is versatility.
08:09 You know, wickets that probably didn't have as much pace and nip at times,
08:14 but he's able to create really good angles on the crease with his swing.
08:18 And he was able to work on getting one to shape away a little bit.
08:22 And then he's able to go to the bouncer plan.
08:24 And I think when you're doing that, it just shows his versatility.
08:29 Because we know if the conditions are good for bowling,
08:32 that he's always going to be a handful.
08:35 But he's shown through the series and through his career that when it's not,
08:40 he can still keep it tight and then wait for his opportunity and work a batter out.
08:46 Last one off the back seat.
08:47 Marn, you mentioned the weather forecast for the weekend before.
08:50 And I guess given the fact that you guys are posted 300-plus battered out the first day,
08:54 do you expect England to be any more aggressive perhaps when they get out there tomorrow?
09:00 I think so. I think so.
09:02 I think the ball will be more in their court.
09:06 I think – I can't suggest how they're going to bat,
09:10 but I feel like with that in mind and with them needing to win this test match to stay alive,
09:17 I think they'll definitely – showing more intent at times.
09:22 I mean, it's different ways to skin a cat.
09:24 You don't need to all do it from ball one.
09:27 But we'll have to wait and see.
09:28 But I think with the amount of rain that is forecasted for later,
09:32 that might be a way they go.
09:34 I'd suggest that from all the talk pre-series and trying to play that brand of cricket,
09:42 I think they're definitely going to take that factor in to play.
09:46 Awesome. Thanks, everyone. Thank you.
