00:00 I don't know, to be honest.
00:05 I'm obviously very disappointed just now.
00:09 Yeah, obviously you never know how many opportunities you're going to get to play here.
00:17 So yeah, the defeats maybe, yeah, feel a bit tougher.
00:25 But to be honest, every year that Wimbledon's not gone how I'd like, it's been hard.
00:33 Did any of the match change, do you think, given you had to come back and play on the
00:36 second day?
00:37 Or did nothing change in your mind based on that?
00:42 I don't know, to be honest.
00:44 I'd have to see the match again to see.
00:47 I mean it does change, it's different playing indoors and outdoors, it's not the same conditions.
00:53 How frustrating was it, Andy, given the position you were in last night that you couldn't finish
00:58 the match then?
01:01 You never know what would have happened.
01:03 So the same result could have happened.
01:06 We knew that we were only going to be able to play until 11 o'clock, so you're kind of
01:13 playing to a time that was unlikely if there was any split sets or anything that we were
01:19 going to finish yesterday.
01:20 So we knew the situation going into the match and that's how it was.
01:25 When you're ahead, it's always going to maybe work against you and when you're behind it's
01:32 always going to be a little bit of an encouragement to stop?
01:36 I don't know.
01:37 I don't know.
01:38 I'm sure there's some data out there to see whether that makes any difference or not.
01:45 I'm not sure.
01:49 I don't necessarily think it necessarily favours someone more than another.
01:58 The way that you're playing in totally different conditions from one day to the next, that's
02:04 the biggest change regardless of who's up in the score.
02:11 It's quite different.
02:12 Andy, did you want to play on for those 20 minutes last night?
02:17 Would you have liked to have played until 11 o'clock?
02:20 No, I didn't necessarily think it was appropriate to keep going because it was highly unlikely
02:27 we'd finish the match unless someone was to win the set.
02:31 It was unlikely someone was going to win that set in 20 minutes or in 19 minutes, whatever
02:37 we had left to play.
02:41 So it seemed like a reasonable time to stop.
02:46 Andy, what was the injury last night and how did it feel today?
02:51 I wouldn't describe it as an injury.
02:53 I obviously slipped.
02:54 I had some initial pain and discomfort when that happens.
03:01 It's like a jarring of the joint.
03:04 It can be a little bit sore, but I pulled up OK today.
03:10 How would you assess your level of play after this point?
03:21 I'm not sure.
03:22 There were some things I did very well, others things that I did poorly.
03:30 Obviously I only lost serve once across five sets, but my return game was not good enough.
03:40 There was a big moment at 4-4 when you were going a bit of momentum in 15-30.
03:48 Your return got called out and it was actually in.
03:50 Do you realise at the time how close that was?
03:54 The fifth majority point my return was in?
03:58 Yeah, well, yeah.
04:05 That's obviously frustrating because I remember it.
04:07 I think it was like a backhand cross-court return, very short, and I probably would have
04:11 won the point.
04:12 Andy, we've seen sometimes if matches are played under the roof and then you come back
04:24 the next day and you carry on under the roof.
04:25 Is there any discussion about whether it will be under the roof or with the roof open?
04:29 We were told we were playing outdoors last night.
04:33 There wasn't a discussion.
04:34 Would you have liked to carry on under the roof?
04:39 I think my opinion is that this is an outdoor tournament.
04:42 They should be trying their hardest to play as much tennis outdoors as possible.
04:48 So yeah, I think they should try to play as much of the match as outdoors as they can.
04:59 In light of that, Andy, and obviously we don't know how the match would have gone if it continued
05:04 last night, but do you think they need to perhaps re-examine this 1.30 start, which
05:08 obviously reduces the amount of time that matches can be played outdoors?
05:20 I don't know.
05:21 When will they make their decisions?
05:26 It's obviously not just what's best for the players.
05:34 There's obviously other things like TV and the hospitality and those sorts of things
05:40 that are factored into those decisions.
05:43 So I'm sure they're weighing all of those things up to try and make the right decision
05:49 for the event.
05:53 I don't know whether they think that it's been good or not.
05:58 I don't know how they decide on that.
06:03 Andy, you'd asked before the start of the Championships not to always have the evening
06:09 match and last night you put on final on centre again.
06:14 How did you feel about that?
06:16 I knew that was going to be the case.
06:18 I asked pre-tournament not to play at that time because of the potential disruption,
06:24 changing conditions.
06:27 Like I said, there's many factors that go into those sort of decisions.
06:35 The players shouldn't necessarily just be able to make requests and get what they want.
06:45 Like I said, there's many factors that go into it.
06:49 Andy, given the atmosphere, particularly last night, are those the moments that will help
06:56 carry you through moments like this and sustain you?
07:01 Look, obviously it's brilliant to play in great atmospheres and it makes playing the
07:08 matches more enjoyable and creates better memories.
07:15 But ultimately, this was an opportunity for me.
07:22 I had a good chance of having a proper run for the first time in a long time at a slam
07:28 and I didn't take it.
07:30 So regardless of the atmosphere and those things, it's still very, very disappointing
07:38 to be sitting here right now.
07:40 With that return at 4-0, 15-30, that actually landed in, was there any particular reason
07:48 at the time that you didn't challenge?
07:51 Because normally you are quite good at challenging balls that are even a little bit out.
07:57 Well, it was right underneath the umpire's nose.
08:01 They shouldn't be missing that, to be honest.
08:07 And if they're unsure, they should let the player know, I think.
08:12 But it could only have been a couple of metres from where it was such a sharp, sharp angle
08:20 and it was very short.
08:21 So I assumed the umpire would have made the right call.
08:29 The linesperson, I think, called it out.
08:31 The umpire called it out.
08:32 So yeah, I mean, you can obviously argue it's a mistake on my part, but ultimately
08:42 the umpire's made a poor call that's right in front of her.
08:47 Just on that, Andy, what's your view on automation against human line dodges?
08:55 Right now, obviously, we'd rather it was done automatically.
09:02 It's a hard one because I probably prefer having the lines judges on the court.
09:09 I think it feels nicer to me.
09:13 The challenges, I think the crowd quite like it.
09:15 I think for TV, I think they probably quite like it.
09:18 But yeah, when mistakes are getting made in important moments, then obviously as a player,
09:28 you don't want that.
09:29 What else, being equal, Andy, how confident are you that you'll be back here next year?
09:43 I don't know.
09:45 Yeah, motivation is obviously a big thing and, you know, continuing, you know, having
09:54 early losses in tournaments like this don't necessarily help with that.
10:04 And yeah, it's similar to, I guess, to last year.
10:10 You know, I had a long think about things and spoke to my family and decided to keep
10:20 on going.
10:22 I don't plan to stop right now.
10:26 This one takes a little while to get over and, you know, hopefully find the motivation
10:34 again to keep training, keep pushing and try and keep getting better.
10:43 Coming so close to beating the world number five, Andy, do you think that strengthens
10:47 or weakens your resolve that you can beat the very best players in the Grand Slams in
10:51 the future?
10:52 Well, I mean, I certainly could have beaten him today or yesterday.
11:03 You know, I've obviously, earlier in the year, had a great win against Berrettini, who was
11:11 a top player at the time.
11:13 He's obviously had his injuries this year.
11:14 But yeah, I certainly can.
11:19 It's clear based on how the match went.
11:22 I mean, there's only a few points in it today.
11:30 But it's also like it's not just about winning the odd match against them, really.
11:37 You know, to have a run at these tournaments, you know, you need multiple wins in a row.
11:44 And I've obviously not done that.
11:46 So yeah.
