00:03 The play of I, a sinner takes a very small character
00:16 from Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
00:19 and magnifies his experience in that play.
00:23 What attracted me to the play of I, a sinner was the character.
00:27 He's a small character in Julius Caesar who's
00:30 killed for being in the wrong place
00:32 and being mistaken for somebody else.
00:35 And the idea of being misunderstood and misrepresented
00:38 was really quite interesting.
00:39 I think it's really important that young people should
00:41 connect with Shakespeare.
00:42 I also understand that a lot of young people
00:45 don't have opportunities to go to the theater.
00:47 And sometimes Shakespeare can be quite alienating and quite
00:50 distant.
00:51 So this show is about making Shakespeare accessible,
00:55 particularly the stories of Shakespeare accessible.
00:58 And there, I think, is a call to young people.
01:01 What the production allows children to do
01:03 is just be a bit more free and be braver with their words.
01:06 The character, Sinner, is often afraid to write
01:08 the words he wants to write.
01:10 And so there's a great excitement
01:11 around the material that gets written by each audience who
01:13 sees this show, who sees it live and who also watches it
01:17 on the streaming, and to weave into those pieces of writing
01:21 ideas around where writing exists in society,
01:25 how important writing is, how important protest is.
01:27 Sinner is a man who doesn't get involved,
01:33 who doesn't engage with his writing with the world.
01:35 And in a way, he suffers the consequences of that.
01:39 And so to get a young audience to think
01:40 about how their writing might engage with the world
01:44 became a very important focus for the work.
01:49 Why not write these words, a list, a line of thought?
01:52 Anything is poetry as long as you can express yourself.
01:54 Have you started writing?
02:00 Do you know what?
02:00 Yeah.
02:02 I wrote poetry before I started doing Sinner.
02:05 And the massive thing I've learned
02:10 is sharing my poetry.
02:12 Before, I used to write it kind of for myself.
02:14 But doing this production, I've spoken about my poetry.
02:17 I've shared my poetry with friends and family
02:20 and realized it's a sharing thing.
02:22 Sometimes you're scared to share.
02:25 But sharing is a wonderful thing with poetry.
