00:49 - This morning I threw a rock 1,760 yards.
00:53 Another milestone.
00:54 (laughing)
00:56 So, let's do a card trick, shall we?
01:00 Since this is not a comedy club at all.
01:02 I'm gonna try and experiment here.
01:06 I'm gonna have you write your name on one of these cards.
01:08 I'm gonna hand you this pen.
01:11 Fantastic.
01:12 Now let's find a card we can sign here.
01:13 That'll do perfectly.
01:15 In fact, I'm gonna hand you a sticker for this.
01:17 Just choose any one of those stickers and
01:20 you can write your name on there.
01:21 In fact, you can stick it on there if you want to.
01:23 Just write your initials on there or something else.
01:26 Excellent.
01:29 Followed by your address and telephone number.
01:30 (laughing)
01:31 You've actually got a good excuse 'cause it's a dull room.
01:33 What were you gonna write there, by the way?
01:35 Did you run out of room or?
01:36 - No.
01:37 - SH, well, nevermind.
01:38 Okay, so.
01:39 (laughing)
01:40 I should've had larger stickers.
01:41 I know all about that.
01:42 So, this is kind of interesting, actually.
01:46 What does the S stand for, by the way?
01:48 - Sarah.
01:49 - Sarah, and the H?
01:50 - Howard.
01:51 - Howard, fantastic.
01:52 I'm gonna try and experiment.
01:53 I'm gonna leave that here for a second.
01:56 I'm gonna remove some cards from here.
01:58 Should we remove the, well, there are the kings.
02:00 There's the kings.
02:01 There's the king of clubs, the king of hearts,
02:04 the king of diamonds, king of spades.
02:07 Fantastic.
02:08 So, just leave those over there for a second.
02:11 I'm gonna kind of put these into the box here.
02:14 In fact, just before we do anything,
02:16 I'm gonna kind of sandwich them just into the box.
02:20 A little bit like this, hopefully.
02:23 Let me get them in there.
02:23 There we go.
02:25 And your name is?
02:26 - Tida.
02:27 - Tida, fantastic.
02:28 Could you lend me your hand for a second?
02:30 That's fantastic.
02:31 Oh, by the way, you're going on a very long journey,
02:32 as well, I've gotta tell you.
02:33 - Oh, we have.
02:34 - Oh, you have, don't you?
02:34 You've come back, fantastic.
02:36 And you can put your other hand over the top there
02:37 if you do, that's good.
02:38 Excellent.
02:39 And your name is?
02:40 - Nelson.
02:41 - Nelson, fantastic.
02:42 Let's kind of do this.
02:45 I'm gonna kind of sandwich this into,
02:47 well, not sandwich, kind of seal it into here.
02:50 I'm gonna ask you, are you left-handed or right-handed?
02:52 - Right-handed.
02:53 - Right-handed.
02:53 If you use your right, you'd be wrong.
02:54 Left?
02:55 Yes?
02:56 Okay, I understand.
02:57 Just kind of hold out your fingers
02:58 just a little bit like this.
02:59 That's good, and kind of trap it there for a second.
03:02 Now, this is kind of interesting,
03:03 because what I'm gonna do here,
03:04 I need a little bit of a lighter here.
03:07 So, as you get this out here,
03:09 there we go, fantastic.
03:10 Let's kind of heat this up just a little.
03:15 There we go.
03:16 And hopefully when you let go,
03:17 it kind of dematerializes, you see,
03:19 which is kind of interesting.
03:20 That's rather striking, isn't it?
03:23 Just lift up your hand for me.
03:25 Good.
03:26 Inside the box, you'll see that it kind of ends up,
03:31 and there's the four kings, of course,
03:35 and your sign card, which is kind of interesting.
03:39 Oh, thank you very much indeed.
03:41 Excellent.
03:43 Good afternoon, good evening, good morning,
03:45 depending on your preference or sort of current state.
03:48 My name's Andrew Norman-Sell,
03:50 in association with Magic World,
03:52 and this is the explanation for Expresso.
03:54 Essentially, this is a nice little thing you can do
04:01 in a variety of ways.
04:03 You can actually do this in sort of close-up.
04:06 You can actually do it in stand-up as well,
04:07 which is interesting.
04:09 There'll be a little bit of sort of thought on that later,
04:11 but for now, let's kind of run through this.
04:14 Let's find a card we can sign here.
04:15 For the purpose of this explanation,
04:20 I'll do a demonstration first,
04:22 and then I'll try and sort of explain it
04:23 sort of step-by-step.
04:24 We have a card selected, which could be signed.
04:28 If you prefer to use a sticker for this, you can do.
04:30 Stick a sticker on there.
04:32 Have a spectator initial the sticker,
04:34 or write their initials on there.
04:36 Anthony, you might want to do that.
04:39 And you can write your initials right across the face
04:42 of the sticker.
04:44 Excellent, good.
04:47 Fantastic.
04:48 Hopefully, there's dry.
04:50 In fact, I'm going to leave it over here for a second.
04:54 Now, what I aim to do,
04:55 I'm going to take the kings from here.
04:56 We might as well use the kings whilst we've got them.
04:59 One, two, three, and one more, which is four.
05:03 I'm going to leave the kings,
05:04 I'm going to drop the kings into here,
05:06 into this box,
05:08 and seal the box.
05:10 I'll leave the box right in full view here.
05:12 In fact, you can put your finger on the box
05:14 if you want to, Anthony.
05:15 Good.
05:17 So, with that in mind,
05:19 if we were going to seal your card into the envelope,
05:24 I've got to ask you, are you left-handed or right-handed?
05:27 - I'm right-handed. - You're right-handed.
05:28 Just kind of hold onto the envelope in your hand.
05:30 That's fine.
05:31 I'm going to try and experiment here.
05:33 In fact, I could probably use a light for this.
05:37 So, if I were to reach into here,
05:40 and using a little heat,
05:43 kind of apply this to the envelope,
05:45 which actually causes the molecular structure to dissolve,
05:48 you see, which is interesting.
05:50 The card vanishes from here.
05:52 And if we open the box,
05:54 inside the box,
05:56 there are, in fact, two cards.
05:58 Inside the box, there are, in fact, five cards.
06:02 One of them happens to be your card.
06:04 And, of course, these are the four kings.
06:09 Very good.
06:10 Thank you very much indeed.
06:12 50 seconds on the clock.
06:14 And we'll draw in three, two, one.
06:16 Eye contact with the camera.
06:18 Go.
06:19 And this is the explanation for Expresso.
06:21 Just a couple of things you'll need to do this.
06:24 You'll need a marking pen, which is a Sharpie marking pen,
06:27 a permanent marker, any kind of marker,
06:30 stickers if you prefer.
06:32 Depending on your preference,
06:34 you can actually do this in sort of standard format,
06:37 where they actually sign the card if you want to,
06:39 but that doesn't really matter.
06:40 But for kind of repeat performance,
06:42 you'll probably need some stickers.
06:44 Or, indeed, a China graph marking pencil,
06:47 which can be erased and rubbed off with a damp cloth.
06:51 Okay.
06:53 You actually receive in your package, if you will,
06:59 a fake card, which is actually a double-faced card.
07:02 It's sort of backed with a king.
07:04 It could be a jack or a queen,
07:06 but it is backed with a face card or a picture card.
07:09 So with that in mind, showing the spot card face upwards,
07:13 you also get an envelope.
07:15 This is a gimmicked envelope or a faked envelope,
07:18 which allows any card that's placed inside it
07:21 to be stolen out again.
07:23 It's simply a bottomless envelope.
07:26 Okay.
07:27 I'll explain the handling on this later.
07:29 So with that in mind, before you start off,
07:33 you remove the duplicate card
07:36 that appears on the back of your double-faced card.
07:39 So in this case, it's the king of spades.
07:41 The regular or normal king of spades
07:44 is placed into the card case.
07:47 You could place this into your pocket or your wallet.
07:50 Doesn't really matter.
07:51 So with that in mind, you place the regular king
07:55 into the card box and just close up the flap here.
07:59 The fake card or the double-faced card
08:02 is placed into the deck.
08:04 Five or six cards from the end here.
08:07 I've placed a queen of spades on the face here
08:09 just to help with the little move later.
08:12 So you introduce the deck, you can come along,
08:15 run through the cards, and find your card,
08:18 which is the double-faced card.
08:20 Place it onto the table, have somebody sign their name on here.
08:24 As I say, they can sign it directly onto here.
08:26 If you want to do a repeat performance,
08:28 I find it better to have a sticker here.
08:31 So you simply stick the sticker on there
08:33 and write your initials
08:36 or someone else's initials on here.
08:39 So you then place this onto the face of the deck,
08:43 and in doing so, you get a little break
08:45 under the top card here.
08:47 Just pick it up like this.
08:49 When you place this onto here,
08:51 you're now in readiness for a double turnover
08:53 or a double lift, if you like.
08:55 And in doing so, it effectively switches this card,
08:59 the one that was on the face, for the double-faced card.
09:02 I'll just run through that again very quickly.
09:04 So a little break under the top card here,
09:07 place this onto here, do this,
09:11 and drop this down onto the envelope.
09:13 You can kind of spread casually here if you want to.
09:16 At which point you can place these down.
09:19 Or what I do is I run through the cards
09:21 and take out the four kings.
09:23 There's one, two, three, and four.
09:29 Now you've got to get the king of spades,
09:31 which is actually, in actual fact, the selected card,
09:34 into the second position from the top here.
09:36 So you just kind of reorder them this way.
09:39 If you turn all these face downwards now,
09:42 if you're a purist, you might want to do an Elmsley count here,
09:45 but it doesn't really matter,
09:47 provided that ends up in the second position here.
09:50 Place all of these into the card box.
09:53 You can open it up, just drop them into here,
09:57 and just leave the card box to one side.
09:59 You can let somebody else hold it if you wanted,
10:01 or put it into their pocket.
10:03 Now the situation is now,
10:05 you've got all four normal kings in here,
10:08 plus the double-faced card, which is actually the signed card.
10:11 Most of the work's actually done before you begin to do anything, essentially.
10:16 That's why it's so cunning and so powerful, I suppose.
10:19 So you pick up this card here with the envelope,
10:23 place this apparently into the envelope,
10:26 and just pause for a second.
10:28 Now what I do is I kind of show it here,
10:30 and then I ask them if they're left or right-handed.
10:32 That creates a little bit of misdirection.
10:34 As you do this, you place this back onto here,
10:36 and you just push it down slightly,
10:38 so you can just grip this edge here with your thumb.
10:41 As you close up here, you simply pull the envelope away
10:45 and place it to one side.
10:47 You can put the pen on top of it if you want to.
10:51 With that in mind, now, you've just got a regular,
10:53 normal, clean deck, as it were.
10:56 You could spread it on the table if you wanted.
10:58 You can show them here.
11:00 You then move to the envelope.
11:02 I held the lighter under here, but it doesn't matter.
11:05 If it's sealed up, you can actually sort of rip the envelope up,
11:08 which is quite dramatic, to open the thing up to show it empty,
11:11 or simply open it and show that the card is gone.
11:15 Drop it down to one side.
11:17 If you're going to choose the option of actually ripping this up,
11:20 it's quite nice because it kind of destroys the evidence in a way.
11:25 After you've done this, simply open up the box,
11:28 take out all of the cards that are in there,
11:31 and simply spread them and show that the signed card
11:35 has now appeared between the kings.
11:38 You can turn over the kings here to show that they are genuinely the kings,
11:42 and there's the signed card that's appeared in the box with the kings.
11:48 Hello again. This is Andrew Norman Sill in association with Magic World,
11:55 bringing you a little bit of extra something here for your espresso,
11:58 a little drawing duplication.
12:00 I hope you like it.
12:02 Using these, I've got a number of business cards here, Anthony,
12:05 and I'm going to hand you one of these.
12:07 Just on the back, just draw a little sketch or a diagram or a doodle
12:10 or something like that, but more importantly,
12:12 don't let me see what you're going to do here.
12:14 Okay, turn it face down. I'll turn away just for a second.
12:18 And when you've done that, just turn the card face down again.
12:21 That's good.
12:23 And if I were to seal it into here...
12:28 There's no way. You could have drawn anything on there.
12:30 In fact, I'm going to try and experiment here.
12:32 In fact, I'm going to leave it right there.
12:35 I'll just leave it in full view here. We don't need these, by the way.
12:38 I'm going to try and get an impression of what it is you've sketched or drawn on there.
12:42 In fact, let me have a go here with this here.
12:48 Just think about what you're doing here.
12:52 It was a fairly simple design, I take it.
12:55 It was a fairly simple design.
12:59 Just let me kind of do this.
13:02 I'm taking it was sort of fairly abstract.
13:05 Actually, I'll be honest with you. I'm not very happy with that idea.
13:09 Let me try it one more time here.
13:12 Yeah, I think...
13:17 I'm getting something like...
13:24 What did you draw, by the way?
13:26 It was a square.
13:29 Something like this, perhaps?
13:31 Interesting.
13:33 Thank you very much indeed.
13:35 Hello. This is the explanation for the little drawing duplication.
13:43 A little extra on Expresso.
13:46 Let me explain.
13:48 Using some business cards, using your own business cards,
13:51 or a collection of blank business cards, and using the envelope that we've got here,
13:55 which was the same envelope we used in the Expresso trick.
13:58 Basically, use this as a receptacle for your business cards,
14:01 which is a fairly natural-looking thing.
14:04 It sort of fits in nicely. You can just kind of drop this into your pocket if you want to.
14:08 Bring it out.
14:10 Take out all of the cards here.
14:12 Just drop the envelope onto the table.
14:14 Take off one of the cards, the top one here.
14:17 Send it to one of your spectators.
14:20 Have them sketch a little image or a doodle or a drawing on there.
14:24 And of course, for this purpose, it doesn't matter if I see it now.
14:28 He turns it face down again.
14:30 You then pick up the envelope and seal it in there.
14:34 Now, using the same sort of ruse that we used before here,
14:38 if you just kind of push down, that will go to the edge here.
14:41 Close up the flap.
14:43 Take the envelope away.
14:45 You've stolen the card here, just on the top.
14:49 Of course, you can see that the image is here.
14:51 Place all of the cards into your pocket.
14:54 Pick up the pen and then pretend to read his mind.
14:59 This is proving quite difficult because there's only two thoughts in there.
15:03 - Thank you. - That's okay. No problem.
15:05 They're kind of bumping into each other, aren't they?
15:08 So you have a little bit of trouble doing this.
15:11 Then reach into your pocket and pull out a card.
15:14 You actually pull out the top card, which is the one with the image on there,
15:18 and look at it yourself here.
15:21 This is quite nice because Anton has actually done a very small sketch
15:24 at the end of the card here, so I can actually cover it with my thumb.
15:28 This is not always going to be the case because some people might draw a very large thing here,
15:32 which is going to be difficult to do, but it doesn't matter.
15:34 This is quite a subtle thing because I can actually cover it with my thumb.
15:37 So I look here and say, "I'm going to try and get an impression of what you drew."
15:41 I'll start to sketch something on here, which can be anything.
15:46 This is quite difficult. I've just drawn an abstract square here, but that doesn't matter.
15:51 You take off the top, look at it here, and look what he's actually drawn.
15:57 Then say, "I'm not really very happy with this," and kind of tear the card up, drop it on the table.
16:04 I'll try and do it again. In fact, if you were to concentrate on this--
16:07 this is quite difficult because we've got the envelope, etc.
16:10 I'll try and extract it from your mind here, which is slightly more organic.
16:15 Pull out another card here, and then proceed to draw on here what you'd seen on the previous card.
16:21 So I'll sketch this. Try and make it different to what he's got.
16:28 We've got this image here, and I'll say to Anthony, "Oh, by the way, what did you draw?
16:32 What did you sketch?"
16:33 - It was the arrow. - An arrow?
16:34 - Yeah. - Okay. Was it something like this, perhaps?
16:36 - Just like that. - Excellent. Thank you.
16:38 To clean up, all you've got to do is maybe rip up the envelope.
16:43 You don't have to do that, and if you drop it all in one pile,
16:46 then it kind of negates the need to sort of steal this out or sort of load it back in if you want to.
16:54 Just sort of throw the whole thing in the trash, and if anybody looks in there,
16:58 all they'd actually see is the ripped-up card and the envelope.
17:03 A little drawing duplication with the Expresso envelope. Thank you.
