00:43 - Hi, I'm Michael Stern.
00:44 - And I'm Zach Mueller.
00:45 - And this is the Vintage Holdout.
00:46 Please.
00:47 - Enjoy.
00:48 I should probably talk about the effect.
00:50 You can go ahead, sorry.
00:52 - The Vintage Holdout was created by Zach and I
00:55 roughly three years ago,
00:56 and it utilizes a deck of cards in a rather specific way
00:59 that I think you'll find rather interesting.
01:01 - Very, very interesting indeed.
01:02 The Vintage Holdout is not really a finished effect per se,
01:05 but rather a concept that we hope once you've learned it,
01:08 you can incorporate into your own effects
01:10 and expand upon the concept itself.
01:12 - So we're gonna show you a few tricks
01:14 that utilize the Vintage Holdout.
01:15 Enjoy.
01:16 Hey everyone, Michael Stern here in Hollywood,
01:21 performing for you guys some of the effects.
01:24 Sup baby?
01:26 We're gonna be showing you the Vintage Holdout
01:27 and a few tricks that can be used with it.
01:28 So, enjoy.
01:29 I want you to name your favorite card.
01:31 What's your favorite card?
01:32 - Ace.
01:33 - Queen of spades.
01:34 - Queen of spades.
01:34 I'm gonna put the queen inside the box.
01:36 - The ace inside the card box, okay?
01:40 - And we'll take the coin.
01:42 This is what we're gonna do.
01:43 What's your name?
01:44 - Kelsey.
01:45 - Can you help me out?
01:46 Can you hold out your hand like this?
01:47 Here, watch.
01:48 In your hand like this.
01:49 Watch it vanish.
01:51 - What?
01:54 Wait a minute, what?
01:55 - I'm gonna take the coin.
01:56 (hip hop music)
01:58 - Thank you!
02:06 (laughing)
02:07 - Watch the deck.
02:08 (hip hop music)
02:11 The card appears outside the deck,
02:16 which means that inside the coin--
02:17 - What?
02:18 Wait a minute!
02:19 - I'm looking right at you now.
02:20 See how that is.
02:21 (laughing)
02:22 It's an illusion, I know.
02:23 (hip hop music)
02:25 - The card appears means the ace is on the outside.
02:28 You know, on the back.
02:29 And that means if you hold your hands out.
02:31 (hip hop music)
02:34 (hip hop music)
02:36 (speaking in foreign language)
02:43 How do you say deck?
02:48 (speaking in foreign language)
02:51 (laughing)
03:02 (speaking in foreign language)
03:06 Tell me when to stop.
03:15 - What?
03:16 - Hey, put the queen back, right?
03:17 - Okay.
03:18 - In the center.
03:20 And I'll take the box back, the halfway down.
03:23 Put the deck back in the box.
03:24 Watch.
03:28 (hip hop music)
03:30 (hip hop music)
03:33 The queen of spades.
03:37 Oh, the king.
03:39 Oh, wait, wait, wait.
03:40 No, yours was the--
03:42 - Ace.
03:42 - Ace of hearts?
03:43 There we go.
03:44 - Nice!
03:45 - Oh, you, no, oh, oh, you, no, no.
03:48 (laughing)
03:49 Wait, you, hey, watch.
03:50 - I'm putting it on.
03:51 - The queen!
03:52 (laughing)
03:54 (hip hop music)
03:57 (hip hop music)
04:00 - Hello everyone, and thank you very much
04:22 for purchasing our download.
04:24 We are now $5 richer.
04:26 So, actually it's split 60/40,
04:29 so then we have to split that two ways,
04:31 so we get 30% each.
04:32 So I think it's like $1.50, $1.40 each.
04:36 So we're now $1.40 richer.
04:39 So thank you for that contribution.
04:41 We hope you enjoy this effect,
04:42 and now we are going to get into the Vintage Holdout.
04:46 (hip hop music)
04:48 The Vintage Holdout is an effect that I came up with
04:53 about three years ago when I wanted to create
04:55 a unique and visual card under card box effect.
04:58 The original idea was to have a card box on the table,
05:00 the card was going to vanish and appear
05:01 underneath the card box.
05:03 You then show that there was nothing
05:04 underneath the card box, where'd it go?
05:06 But then, just wait, you proceed to visually pull it
05:10 from the actual card design.
05:11 It's a pretty neat effect, it's kinda cool.
05:13 However, in doing it, you kind of expose the method.
05:16 It's pretty obvious.
05:18 But I really like the idea of having a slip
05:20 between the vintage design and the actual card design,
05:22 because you can hide a card here
05:24 without anyone really noticing,
05:25 and you can do some other really cool effects with it.
05:27 You can use it as a holdout and a bunch of different things.
05:29 So I conspired with Mr. Stern here.
05:31 We decided to call it the Vintage Holdout,
05:33 and Michael's gonna talk to you guys a little bit more.
05:36 Do that now, Michael.
05:37 - Well, thank you, Zach.
05:38 As Zach said, once he handed it off to me
05:40 and we collaborated, we realized its potential
05:42 in a wide range of tricks.
05:44 Everything from a transposing card and coin
05:47 utilizing the box, to a holdout so that you can add
05:52 and take away gimmick cards to its applications
05:55 in the ambitious card scene,
05:57 and even a color-changing rising card.
06:00 So, without any further ado,
06:01 let's get it right into the explanation.
06:03 - Right into the explanation.
06:04 (upbeat music)
06:07 (upbeat music)
06:09 (upbeat music)
06:12 (upbeat music)
06:15 (upbeat music)
06:17 (upbeat music)
06:20 (upbeat music)
06:26 (upbeat music)
06:31 (upbeat music)
06:36 (upbeat music)
06:45 (upbeat music)
06:48 (upbeat music)
07:05 (upbeat music)
07:07 (upbeat music)
07:24 (upbeat music)
07:26 (upbeat music)
07:43 (upbeat music)
07:45 - All right, now we're going to delve
08:00 into a couple different ambitious card moves
08:03 using the vintage holdout.
08:04 So we're gonna get into that right now.
08:06 Let's pan down, Mr. Stern.
08:07 We have a deck of cards already prepared
08:09 with the vintage holdout,
08:10 which you should have already learned.
08:12 And this is, more importantly,
08:14 how to get a deck of cards into the box
08:16 while secretly loading your top-selected card
08:19 into the vintage holdout.
08:21 So, let's say you have a card selected for a diamond,
08:23 so you control it to the top using your favorite method.
08:25 You need to get it into the vintage holdout
08:27 to do any of the effects or create your own effect.
08:30 This is how you do it.
08:31 You're going to take the deck
08:32 and place it into sort of a straddle grip.
08:35 What's that penguin magic trick, Stern?
08:37 - Long-distance spinner.
08:38 - Long-distance spinner.
08:39 Sort of like that.
08:40 Looks a little bit odd,
08:41 but you're only gonna have it in this position
08:43 for a couple seconds.
08:44 You're going to take the deck and the box, just like so.
08:47 Get a good focus on that with that 1.2 aperture.
08:52 You're going to take the deck into the box,
08:54 and what you're going to do is slightly push down
08:57 with your left thumb so that you get a little bit of a dip
09:01 in the card case, which will provide room
09:04 for this top card to get into the vintage holdout.
09:07 So, while you do this,
09:09 your right thumb is going to push the selected card
09:13 right through.
09:14 Now, sometimes it'll be a little bit harder than others,
09:17 just because the box is probably inconsistent.
09:21 It's very, very easy to do.
09:23 However, sometimes it gets snagged just a little bit.
09:26 But if you shake your hand,
09:27 it just looks like you're having trouble
09:28 getting the entire deck into the box
09:30 rather than doing a secret move.
09:31 So, the deck goes into the box, just like so.
09:36 This gets pushed in,
09:38 and the rest of the deck gets pushed in as well, flush.
09:41 Close the box.
09:42 Then you can show it all around.
09:44 It's very simple.
09:45 Sometimes the card will get raised up just a little bit.
09:48 In that case, just hold it in middle grip
09:50 and either push it down with your first finger
09:53 or just clip it with your thumb.
09:55 Should be pretty simple.
09:56 You shouldn't have it just in one position
09:58 for a very long amount of time
09:59 'cause they might see the difference in the borders
10:02 or just the fact that it looks a little bit odd.
10:05 But this shouldn't be a problem
10:06 because you're simply showing it very casually.
10:09 And then you can do whatever move you like.
10:10 Now, obviously, from here,
10:11 you can do a lot of different things.
10:13 You can either do an ambitious card move,
10:15 which I'm simply doing a classic color change
10:18 or urtinase change, which simply brings it to the top.
10:21 You can do a couple of different things.
10:22 You can either use this
10:23 as while someone is shuffling the deck,
10:25 you could have a card secretly loaded into the box.
10:27 You could palm it off as they're not looking.
10:30 That's the worst palm I think I've ever done.
10:32 And yeah, there's a lot of things you can do with it.
10:34 So that's one way of getting a card into the box.
10:37 If you need to get two cards into the box,
10:39 which is vital for an effect
10:41 we're going to be teaching in just a bit,
10:43 it's pretty simple.
10:44 There's two ways of doing it.
10:44 The first way is very similar to the one card method.
10:48 It's simply to push one card in
10:50 and then push another card in.
10:52 Now, this is a little bit harder
10:53 'cause you can't really see what you're doing
10:54 'cause this card is covering it.
10:56 So if you see here, I've gotten it in,
10:59 but it's very hard to see
11:00 when there's no view of the slit at all.
11:04 But it's pretty simple, I guess.
11:08 Same as the first method,
11:09 push this top card over,
11:11 push the second to top card back.
11:15 So you have a little in-jogged card there.
11:17 Obviously I'm exaggerating.
11:18 It should be probably around the border width.
11:21 Okay, just like that.
11:23 Then you're going to do exactly the same thing you just did
11:25 by holding it in this straddle grip.
11:28 And simply as you put the cards in,
11:32 you'll notice as you push,
11:33 naturally that border will push through.
11:35 Once that happens,
11:37 you're gonna wanna release the pressure on the box,
11:40 push the entire deck through,
11:41 and you should notice there are now two cards
11:45 within the vintage holdout.
11:46 Now that's very useful for a trick
11:47 we're going to explain later,
11:49 but other than that,
11:49 that is how to get two cards into the vintage holdout.
11:53 (upbeat music)
11:55 (upbeat music continues)
11:59 (upbeat music continues)
12:02 (upbeat music continues)
12:05 (upbeat music continues)
12:32 (upbeat music continues)
12:35 (upbeat music continues)
13:01 (upbeat music continues)
13:05 Hi everyone.
13:18 Now that you know the vintage holdout
13:19 and the basic concept behind it,
13:21 most of the effects from here on out
13:22 should be self-explanatory.
13:23 Having said that,
13:24 I'm still gonna explain the effect I just performed.
13:27 What you're gonna need is a coin,
13:30 a card,
13:31 and a box with the vintage holdout prepared on it.
13:34 Now you can have the coin sign and the card sign,
13:36 but I think that's overkill.
13:38 The effect is enough on its own.
13:40 You're gonna get the card,
13:41 place it within the vintage holdout,
13:43 make sure that it's underneath the flap,
13:47 and then you're gonna take the coin
13:48 and place it on the back of the box.
13:50 You can decide where on the back of the box
13:51 you wanna put it,
13:52 whether that be on this side of the flap
13:54 or on the other side of the flap.
13:55 This side is much easier
13:56 'cause you just have to lean to get it in,
13:58 whereas the other side you have to lean back
14:00 and then forward,
14:01 making sure that it doesn't fall off.
14:02 So what you're gonna do,
14:04 as I just showed,
14:05 is allow the coin to fall into the slit
14:08 and at the same time perform the classic color change,
14:11 the card going up and over the slit,
14:13 creating the illusion that the card has now appeared
14:17 and essentially transposed with the coin within the box.
14:20 Now all you have to do is get rid of the card
14:22 and reveal the coin,
14:24 making sure not to reveal the slit within.
14:27 And an easy way around that is just tilting it sideways
14:29 rather than front on with the audience.
14:31 (upbeat music)
14:34,
14:37,
14:38 (upbeat music)
14:40 (upbeat music)
14:43 (upbeat music)
15:12 - Hello, this is the explanation for the rising color change.
15:15 That's what I just titled it.
15:17 What you're going to need to accomplish this effect
15:19 is have a card selected and controlled second from the top.
15:22 Once you've done that, in this case the ace of clubs,
15:28 you're gonna have the deck return to the box
15:32 and then going to perform one of the dual card loading moves
15:35 that I explained earlier.
15:37 In this case, I'm just going to do the straddle.
15:39 So that's one card, two cards, close it.
15:44 Now tip, good idea to tap the box before you do that.
15:49 What that's doing is aligning the cards on the back
15:51 so that when you're rising it up,
15:52 they're together and your pinky is able
15:54 to actually separate the two so that you can rise them.
15:57 Now what you're gonna do is close the box.
16:00 And also one other really quick tip,
16:01 it helps to have the sides of the box removed
16:03 so that way the flap can actually open up.
16:05 If not, it kind of gets stuck.
16:07 So you're gonna close that flap.
16:09 You're then going to, from the back with your pinky,
16:13 you're going to separate the two cards
16:16 and proceed in pushing one up.
16:19 The card's going to go up.
16:21 Unfortunately, it almost always is gonna catch there.
16:24 So just a little tap is gonna dislodge that
16:27 and proceed in letting it rise all the way up.
16:29 Once you do that, gesture towards the spectator,
16:33 note the card, it's not going to be their card.
16:35 From then on, you're going to get the next card up,
16:39 push that card as well up,
16:43 and as best as you can, align the two
16:44 so they look as one card.
16:46 Now, that's what it's gonna end up looking like.
16:50 Sometimes it doesn't, but it's a really quick change
16:52 so most of the time they aren't really noticing that.
16:54 From then, you're going to, from the back,
16:56 pull with your thumb down that card.
17:02 As you pull out that card,
17:04 you can either hand it to the spectator,
17:05 do whatever you see fit with it,
17:07 and then you can pull the deck out as well as that card.
17:10 And that is how you perform the rising color change.
17:13 Well, that was it, that was the Vintage Holdout.
17:18 I hope you guys found this a worthwhile
17:20 and valuable purchase, but more importantly,
17:21 I hope you guys can use the ideas explained in this video
17:25 and apply them to your own magic.
17:27 And also, as you've probably noticed,
17:28 the Vintage Holdout is by no means a finished idea.
17:30 Zach and I are still continuously creating new ideas with it,
17:33 as should you guys.
17:34 We taught you how to construct the gimmick,
17:36 we taught you the basic concept behind it,
17:38 taught you a few tricks with it.
17:40 That's it.
17:41 So I hope you guys enjoy, and thank you.
17:43 - Thank you very much.
17:44 Also, if you've gone through this entire download
17:47 and thought, "Why did I purchase this?
17:48 "I don't even own a vintage deck," fear not,
17:51 because we have actually come up with a method
17:53 to do this with a completely regular deck.
17:55 You can use it with a bicycle deck
17:57 simply by placing a rubber band around it.
17:59 We have a couple performances of us doing
18:01 pretty much the same effects with this same method.
18:03 You're going to simply cut along the back of the box
18:06 and put a rubber band around it
18:07 or anything to really cover that slip.
18:09 You can put a sticker, pretty much anything,
18:11 and you're good to go.
18:12 You can do this with Tally Ho decks and several others.
18:14 So that's it.
18:15 We hope you enjoyed the effect, the download,
18:17 and pretty much everything else in between.
18:20 Anything else, Michael?
18:21 No, good to go?
18:22 Thank you so much for giving us your money,
18:24 and we hope you use this effect
18:25 at least once in your magic career.
