Rob Roy is a comic operetta by composer Reginald De Koven and lyricist Harry B. Smith.

It is loosely based upon the life of Scottish folk hero Robert Roy MacGregor, better known as Rob Roy. Walter Scott wrote a novel about him.

The plot covers the adventures of Rob Roy, a highland chieftain secretly married to the daughter of the mayor of Perth, and Bonnie Prince Charlie, the young pretender to the throne of Scotland, who in reality didn't set foot in Scotland until 11 years after the MacGregor's death.

Rob Roy premiered in Detroit on October 1, 1894.

It opened in New York on October 29, 1894, at the Herald Square Theatre and ran for 235 performances, closing on March 23, 1895.

But the show was not as successful as the earlier Robin Hood (1890).

Henry Louis Reginald De Koven was born on April 3, 1859. He died on January 16, 1920.

De Koven was born in Middletown, Connecticut, and moved to Europe in 1870, where he received the majority of his education.

He graduated B.A. from St John's College, Oxford in England in 1880.

Between 1887 and 1913, De Koven composed 20 light operas in addition to hundreds of songs, orchestral works, sonatas, and ballets.

Victor Herbert's operettas were heavily influenced by those of continental operetta composers, but De Koven took inspiration from Gilbert and Sullivan. His greatest success was Robin Hood.
