Deaths to be reported in real time in major reform

From today deaths in custody will be reported in real time and will include separate figures for indigenous and non-indigenous people. The change comes three decades after it was first recommended in response to the royal commission into deaths in custody. That report handed down in 1991 outlined systemic failures which impacted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The overrepresentation of indigenous people in the justice system is staggering.
