00:00 Hey everybody, we're going to do a baby diaper cake. You want to either start with buying
00:07 one of these bases, which are fairly expensive. I think this ran me about $7. It's a 10 inch
00:17 Wilton cake plate. But you can get away with just this. You just need a stable base that
00:22 you can hold underneath the cake. I'm going to make, I used this for my first cake, I'm
00:28 going to use this for the second cake and see how well it does. Something tells me it's
00:32 going to do very well. Next you're going to need 60 diapers. I went to Toys R Us, I got
00:39 this 66 mega pack for $9.99. The first one I made out of Pampers, they smell good. They
00:48 smell like baby powder. But they only had 56 and I really stretched it. I think you
00:54 really need to have 60. I think I'm going to be able to easily use all 66. You're also
01:01 going to need a bunch of rubber bands. If they're smaller, they're better. I have mine
01:07 somewhere. These are all that I could find for the time being. You're also going to need
01:15 at least three really big ones because it's going to have to stretch to go around the
01:21 entire bunch of diapers. The outside is going to be 18 diapers, the inside is going to be
01:34 12 and inside of that is 6 diapers. In the middle of that is going to be an 8 ounce bottle
01:46 that you're going to strap them all to. So you would put the 8 ounce bottle there, strap
01:51 it around with a rubber band holding them in place. And then when we get up there, we'll
01:57 add this at some point. These were $1.11 at Walmart and these were, I can't remember,
02:07 $.73 I think. So it's not that expensive and the end product is very neat. So let's begin.
02:22 Now I saw that you could do this two ways. So we'll do it both ways. I'm going to cover
02:30 this because it's kind of dirty. Anyway, the two ways that I saw it was you could either
02:40 do it this way, just start rolling like this, which I think doesn't take as much effort
02:50 and I would make sure that that would be on the inside of the cake that wouldn't be showing.
02:57 It would be like that. Or I've also seen it where you open it up and you start from the
03:07 front and you end at the back. Roll it like this. And it seems to be a little bit more
03:14 even but it does take up more time. If you're not in a hurry, I would suggest doing it this
03:19 way because it just seems a cleaner end product to me. This is what I'm going to go with even
03:25 though it's a little bit more time consuming. Like I said, the smaller the better because
03:31 the outside row is going to end up having bows around this. So I'm going to continue
03:37 doing this and I'll be back when I have them all rolled up.
03:42 I went ahead and I covered - it's going to be a boy so I used primarily a blue colored
03:53 wrapping paper. If you're interested, I got that at Old Navy probably last summer. They
04:01 have the greatest wrapping paper. It's very thick, very sturdy paper that you could probably
04:12 even scrapbook with. I'm going to continue doing this for 66 diapers. I'll be back when
04:20 it's time to start creating the bows and creating the layers.
04:27 Okay, we're going to start to build the cake. You're going to put a rubber band around it
04:35 and then you can either do this side out or this side out. I like this side, it's a little
04:40 bit cleaner. Just make sure that the open end doesn't show when you're putting it in
04:48 there. So 6 on the inside.
05:07 The next layer is going to be 12 around, so put another rubber band and then start the
05:21 next layer.
05:48 Okay, I bought some really thin - I didn't realize it was this thin - but get a ribbon
05:55 that's probably twice as wide as this, about a quarter of an inch thick. You're going to
06:02 cut each piece about 14 to 14 and a half inches long. Because this is so thin, what I did
06:12 was I rolled it up and I had this behind it, but you could see through it. So what I did
06:17 was once I had the ribbon tied on it, I went ahead and took the ribbon off. Your outer
06:24 layer is going to be the layer that has the ribbons that are going to go all the way around
06:35 the entire cake. I'm going to move all of this out of the way, make sure that it's in
06:39 frame. So 18 of those are going to go around the outside, and when I'm done I'll be back.
06:49 Sorry the lighting - the sun's gone.
06:52 Okay, so now we are going to work on the next layer. So once again, 6 on the inside and
07:05 then 12 around that. And the 12 on the outside are again going to have the boat.
07:12 Let me show you - this one I decided to do blue and brown, so I just alternated the blue
07:25 and brown ribbons going around. I probably can fit in a couple more.
07:34 Okay, so here we go with the 12 on the outside.
07:41 Now we add in the second bottle.
08:09 Hopefully that lighting is a little bit better.
08:36 Now I'm going to use 2 different coordinating types of ribbons and wrap a ribbon around
08:43 each layer, right around the middle there, covering up that rubber band that's holding
08:52 all the diapers in together. I'm going to use 2-way stick tape to make sure that it
09:01 holds together well.
09:16 And wrap it around the middle there to get it together just to cover up that rubber band.
09:33 You can move it up a little bit if you want. And then continue to do it on all 3 levels.
09:40 And tomorrow morning when the light is much better, I will get a final shot of this for
09:47 you. But let me see if I can't tip this and get it in there.
09:58 Okay, that's it!
