00:00 Howdy everybody and welcome to a farm party!
00:06 I'm Laurie Gelman for Howdini.com.
00:09 Old MacDonald himself would be proud to welcome kids to this barnyard birthday party where
00:13 the animals are actually cupcakes and the barn is made of a cake too.
00:17 Who knew farm life could be so sweet?
00:19 And best of all, these are as easy as they are adorable.
00:22 Our friend Leve Hanson for the Betty Crocker Kitchens is waiting to show us.
00:26 Hey Leve, good to see you.
00:27 Hi Laurie.
00:28 I love this idea for a party because it's good for boys and girls and every kid loves
00:32 animals right?
00:33 Oh definitely.
00:34 And we have a lot of animals to choose from.
00:35 I know, that's the coolest part.
00:37 But first?
00:38 First the cake.
00:39 We've actually used one mix of cake and that made the cake and the cupcakes.
00:43 And we're going to cut out a nine inch square into the shape of a barn.
00:46 I'm just going to actually score the cake.
00:48 There's a center point here and I'm going to cut down a little bit and then angle it
00:52 a little further to give you the shape of a kind of double edged roof.
00:58 Oh cool.
00:59 Are you going to use any of the leftover parts?
01:01 Nope.
01:02 This you can snack on, you can let the kids eat.
01:04 Now because this has a cut edge, I recommend crumb coating.
01:08 But we've already crumb coated a cake so we're going to get that for me.
01:12 You bet.
01:13 Alright, that looks good for a crumb coating.
01:15 Yeah, it's basically a thin layer of frosting that seals in all the crumbs so that way your
01:19 final coat is nice and neat.
01:21 So I'm going to go ahead and do the final coat.
01:25 That is such a vibrant red.
01:27 How did you get that?
01:28 To get really vibrant colors, use a gel color because they're really concentrated.
01:32 Oh, okay.
01:33 I'm going to put on a nice thick layer.
01:35 You don't have to make it totally smooth on top yet.
01:37 I'm going to come and do the sides.
01:41 And what's going to happen is if you have enough frosting on top and you do the sides,
01:45 you're going to get a little lip of frosting around the top.
01:48 And that's going to make the top coat nice and smooth.
01:50 And I'll show you how once I get all the sides smooth.
01:55 So I have it fairly smooth around the sides.
01:58 And then this lip is formed.
01:59 And what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my offset spatula and come in like an airplane
02:03 landing and then take off and that will smooth out the frosting.
02:08 Beautiful.
02:11 And I like to clean my spatula off after each pass.
02:15 And that will also help keep a nice smooth frosting on top.
02:20 Okay.
02:22 So now when I think of an old barn, I think of old wood slats.
02:25 So to do that, you can take a toothpick, but I'm actually going to just use my offset spatula.
02:29 You can use a butter knife and drag it right across the top.
02:34 You don't have to go too deep, maybe just like an eighth of an inch and just go across
02:38 the entire thing doing parallel lines.
02:41 It actually totally works.
02:42 It looks really cool.
02:43 And I see here I have just a little of a lip that formed here, little points, but you can
02:47 just come back with your spatula and clean off that edge there and smooth it off.
02:52 So it looks good, but I think it needs something.
02:54 Yeah.
02:55 We're going to do a little hayloft and a roof and a door.
02:57 Wow.
02:58 Fancy.
02:59 So we're going to use pretzel sticks to make the little window frame and the door frame.
03:05 And let's see.
03:08 You had longer ones and shorter ones.
03:09 Yeah.
03:10 Give it a little...
03:13 Okay, so there's the door frame.
03:15 And then to do the door and the little window shutters, we're actually going to use graham
03:20 crackers.
03:21 You just stick them in at an angle.
03:22 It gives a little bit of dimension.
03:24 Very cute.
03:27 Okay.
03:28 And we're also going to use graham crackers to do the roof.
03:30 So I'm just going to stick them on and overlap them.
03:33 Oh, so they look like shingles.
03:37 Yes.
03:38 Smart.
03:39 Only one thing missing.
03:40 Animals.
03:41 And a little hay.
03:42 We're going to do a little hay.
03:44 So I've actually tinted some coconut yellow, and we've also tinted some coconut green.
03:49 You want to give it a little toss in there?
03:51 Sure.
03:52 Well, I put a little hay here.
03:57 And then what we can do is we can spread all the green to make it look like the grass in
04:01 the farmyard.
04:03 You could actually, if you wanted to, you could spread a little frosting, green frosting
04:06 down and then the coconut would stick right to it.
04:08 Oh, that's a really good idea.
04:10 We have these cupcakes.
04:11 Yes.
04:12 And you're going to make animals?
04:13 Yes.
04:14 So we're going to do a sheep, a pig, and a little chick.
04:16 Now the chick, you want to try one of the chicks?
04:18 I'll do the chick.
04:19 Okay.
04:20 That gets frosted with white, actually, not yellow.
04:21 And then we're going to use the same coconut that we used for the hay.
04:25 Okay.
04:26 Do I just dip it in like they do at the ice cream stores?
04:28 You can dip it in.
04:29 Yeah, that's a good idea.
04:30 I will sprinkle it on top, but dipping is a great idea.
04:31 Less messy.
04:32 I will start with the sheep.
04:34 And one cupcake in general takes maybe about two tablespoons of frosting to cover it.
04:39 All right, here I go.
04:41 Great.
04:42 That totally works.
04:43 Yes.
04:44 And then what you can do is you can just take little chocolates and make eyes.
04:47 And a nice trick for the beak is we're going to take a gum drop and just mush it.
04:52 You can use a rolling pin, you can use your finger.
04:55 And then when you mush it, it gets a little sticky, so you just roll it in a little sugar.
04:58 Okay.
04:59 You can flatten it a little bit more.
05:02 And then you're going to cut out a little triangle to make the beak.
05:05 Okay.
05:06 I'll continue with that.
05:07 Okay.
05:08 So I'm going to take a little pink frosting and make a little snout for the sheep.
05:13 I love that.
05:15 And then to give that little furry texture, we're going to use marshmallows that are cut
05:19 in half, mini marshmallows.
05:22 And basically you just stick it right on.
05:23 Oh, those are so cute.
05:24 And what I'm going to do also to put little ears on, we've cut gum drops in half.
05:31 And that'll give it a little glisten.
05:32 Oh, cute.
05:33 A little dimension again.
05:34 And just fill in with more marshmallows.
05:39 Okay.
05:40 And then these also get little chocolate eyes.
05:43 And a little red nose.
05:49 Oh my gosh.
05:50 Okay.
05:51 So I'm going to do a pig next.
05:54 Now the pig also, it gets the pink base, but it also gets a little pink snout just like
06:00 the sheep did.
06:03 And then this one gets chocolate eyes.
06:07 And this time for the chocolates, instead of putting them flat to be a circle, you put
06:10 them in sideways so it kind of gives that oblong look of a pig's snout.
06:16 So for the ears, I'm using Fruit Roll-Up Snacks.
06:19 Oh, that's so clever.
06:21 And we cut them out in triangles.
06:23 And basically you just put the triangle down and then overlap it or fold it over so it
06:27 looks like the ears.
06:28 That is so cute.
06:30 Flipping over.
06:31 Ta-da!
06:32 Not bad for my first try.
06:35 That looks great.
06:36 Yeah, I think so.
06:37 Okay, so now let's put all the animals in the farmyard.
06:39 Okay.
06:40 This is the sweetest barnyard on the planet, I'm convinced.
06:43 Thank you so much.
06:44 Thanks, Lori.
06:45 So, so cute.
06:46 And you'll find lots of birthday cakes from the cake experts at Betty Crocker Kitchens
