00:00 If you're planning a springtime party or family gathering, a bunny cake is just the thing
00:07 to brighten up the table and make the kids' eyes light up. I'm Lori Gelman with Howdini.com
00:13 and this is Liev Hansen for Betty Crocker Kitchens. And have we got a bunny for you!
00:17 Or should I say bunnies?
00:18 Yep, we're going to do two of them.
00:20 Fantastic.
00:20 One for you, one for me.
00:21 Alright, let's hop to it!
00:22 Okay, so we start with an 8" round cake and we're just going to cut it in half.
00:26 Okay, you do yours.
00:27 Oh, I get to work on this one, huh?
00:30 Yep.
00:30 Right down the middle.
00:31 Great.
00:31 Serrated knife.
00:32 Okay.
00:32 I see.
00:33 Now, we're going to arrange them on these plates that we have.
00:36 Oh, I love that you do this. You just take wrapping paper and put it over cardboard.
00:40 I'm bunny one. Are you bunny two? I'm just checking.
00:43 Okay, bunny two. Here we go. Okay, so I'll show you how we do it. We're going to arrange
00:48 one here. They stand up on their flat edge.
00:50 Okay.
00:51 And I'm going to give you a purple icing.
00:53 Now do you do them flat back to flat back?
00:56 Yes.
00:56 Or flat to flat?
00:57 Okay, so they're chubby on the outside.
00:59 So take a little frosting and spread it on one of the cut edges.
01:01 Okay.
01:02 And this will stick them together and it will give it a filling. And you know what you can
01:05 also do is put a little bit underneath and that will prevent it from sliding around when
01:08 you're actually frosting it.
01:10 That's a great idea.
01:11 Okay. Then we're just going to take a big spoonful on top.
01:13 Okay.
01:13 And this is when you just start spreading it all over. You want to cover the entire cake.
01:18 Let me move a little closer to you so I can see what's going on. These are gorgeous frosting
01:22 colors. Can you buy them like this?
01:24 You can tint them yourselves. You can just get food coloring from the grocery store and
01:28 just add it drop by drop until you have the desired color. But you know the bunnies, they
01:32 can be, we're just having fun with color. We're making purple and pink ones, but you
01:36 know feel free to make white ones like the traditional ones. You can even make chocolate
01:39 ones.
01:39 Blue.
01:40 Blue, yeah.
01:40 Green.
01:41 Any color. These are nice and springy though.
01:44 Okay. Are you doing a crumb coat or are you just glopping it on?
01:47 No crumb coat on this because there's no cut edges that are exposed.
01:50 Right.
01:50 Which will bring the crumbs up.
01:53 And frosting tips, I mean yours are always so smooth.
01:55 Well for the bunny you don't actually want it to be smooth. You kind of want to make
01:58 it look like it's fur. So you can give it a little texture.
02:01 Which is definitely great for the novice or beginner. You don't have to worry so much.
02:06 So you can just move the spatula around randomly.
02:09 That takes the pressure off of frosting, that's for sure.
02:12 Yes, definitely.
02:12 So now we can do the decorations with the candy.
02:14 Oh great.
02:15 Okay. So I start with the nose. You can choose any color. I like the pastel colors for this
02:21 just because it's springy.
02:22 Springtime makes it look good. I'm going to do yellow.
02:24 Great. And then you can use pull apart licorice, but these little rainbow candies are great
02:29 fun. You just have to cut them down the lines and then cut them into about two inch strips.
02:32 Oh, okay. They don't pull apart. You have to do it yourself.
02:34 No, you have to actually cut them. And then you just put them, tuck them into the nose
02:37 there.
02:37 Oh cute. How many whiskers?
02:39 I do four on each side, but that doesn't matter.
02:41 Okay.
02:42 I'll add some fun colors in there.
02:44 What else does a bunny need? A bunny needs ears.
02:47 Definitely needs ears and eyes. Let's do the eyes first because that's with the candy.
02:51 You can just take mini marshmallows and cut them in half and then just kind of mush them
02:56 a little bit to get them a little wider.
02:58 Okay.
02:58 And you can stick them on right above the nose. And then we can just take, actually
03:05 cut in half jelly beans for the eyes. And to stick them on, you just take a spatula
03:09 and take some of the frosting that you already have and just-
03:12 To make it an adhesive.
03:13 Yeah. And just put it right on there and then stick it right on it.
03:17 This would be so easy for kids to do too.
03:19 Yes.
03:19 This is-
03:20 Fantastic. What a great project. After-care project.
03:23 And then you can do the ears. And a really easy way to do it so you don't have to worry
03:26 about candies or anything is just cut out construction paper into teardrop shapes. So
03:31 we'll do tone on tone. I'll do pink ears and why don't you do purple ears?
03:34 Okay.
03:34 And what I recommend is you just take it and at the one end just fold it just a little
03:38 bit.
03:39 Oh okay.
03:39 And that'll reinforce it.
03:41 Gotcha.
03:42 And then you can stick it right in. Push it in about half an inch, maybe up to an inch
03:46 if necessary. And it should just hold up on its own.
03:49 Great.
03:50 So cute. I mean I guess if you don't have construction paper at home you could just
03:57 use regular white paper.
03:58 Oh sure.
03:59 That would look cute too.
04:00 Yeah. You can have your kids color in a little pink center.
04:02 Oh I like yours. They're a little wider. Mine are a little closer together.
04:04 Offset. And just a couple more touches. I like to make it a little goofy and put in
04:08 little white gum for the teeth. Little buck teeth. But you can keep it simple and just
04:14 put another jelly bean there.
04:15 Cute.
04:15 A little pink mouth.
04:16 Cute, cute. And what about for the tail?
04:18 A big marshmallow.
04:19 Oh right on.
04:20 Just plop it right on there. And there you are.
04:24 I love these cakes. I'm so proud of us. It's amazing. And what I love the most is that
04:27 kids can actually help you, really help you, and use their own imagination with the decorating.
04:31 Yeah, if they're old enough they can frost and decorate the entire thing. Or if they're
04:34 a little younger they can just choose their favorite candies and apply them.
04:37 Yeah. You know what I love most Bunny too?
04:39 What Bunny?
04:39 Is that we have so many cakes here. This is fantastic. One box, two cakes. Fantastic.
04:44 You're going to find a lot more great ideas to make all your occasions more special.
