00:00 Ro: Hello, welcome to another Nerdy Nummies, today I have Davis!
00:16 Davis!
00:17 Ro: Yo!
00:18 From the Warpedome and MMMOMG!
00:19 Davis!
00:20 Ro: MMMOMG.
00:21 Ro: MMMOMG.
00:22 Davis!
00:23 Ro: It's not that hard, it's like, a couple different letters.
00:24 Ro: Today, we are going to make a Captain American cake, I saw this cake on Reddit.
00:28 Davis!
00:29 Ro: Have you seen on Reddit?
00:30 Davis!
00:31 I did not, I did not see it on Reddit.
00:32 Ro: It was awesome, and I give full credit to them, it was so cool that I wanted
00:36 Ro: to make one for myself!
00:39 And Davis is a big Captain American fan, so I had to have him come.
00:42 I am a huge Captain American fan, so much so that I brought my shield.
00:47 Ro: What?
00:48 Yeah.
00:49 Ro: These are so cool, it's like bigger than I am.
00:51 The tools that we'll be using will be…
00:55 Spoon pin, knife, spatula, and cake leveler.
01:00 Boom!
01:01 We'll also need 2 spoons, oh, 2 spoons!
01:06 Not 1, 2!
01:07 For each of the food dye we'll need red and blue.
01:10 Add 2 bowls, 2 round cake pans, these are 8 inch.
01:15 Big mixing bowl, and…
01:19 A measuring cup!
01:20 You're like a worse woman than I am!
01:24 Let's bake a cake!
01:25 OK, what's this called?
01:26 We're gonna put in 1 box cake.
01:27 1 box cake, the whole thing?
01:29 Yeah, just jump in the whole thing, you can get messy!
01:32 I thought I was gonna have to measure it out, no, this is good.
01:35 No, you're gonna use 1 box cake with white box cake mix.
01:39 Then you're gonna take 1 and 1/4 cup of water, then we're gonna do…
01:44 What is that, that's oil?
01:45 Yeah, 1/3 cup of oil.
01:47 Why are you measuring this thing?
01:48 Oh it's on this side.
01:49 You can just see through it?
01:50 Yeah, I'm like, I'm like have X-Man powers.
01:54 Or Superman.
01:55 X-Ray?
01:56 Oh, yeah, I'm…
01:57 You get it?
01:58 Now you're gonna crack 4 eggs, and remember, you just want the white, you don't want
02:03 the yolk because the yolk is yellow and it will make our cake yellow, and we want it
02:06 white.
02:07 So how do you do this?
02:08 And you kind of jiggle the yolk back and forth.
02:10 Oh that doesn't look hard at all!
02:11 And then the white falls.
02:12 I should say that now, OK.
02:13 OK, your turn.
02:14 Oh, shit!
02:15 OK, so, crack it.
02:16 You got it.
02:17 In half.
02:18 Nobody watch me.
02:19 And hold that yolk.
02:20 Oh no!
02:21 Oh no!
02:22 Oh no!
02:23 Oh no!
02:24 What am I doing wrong?
02:25 You don't, you don't want to give up.
02:26 Am I, is it too strong?
02:27 Am I too strong?
02:28 Is that, is that my problem?
02:29 He's too strong, you're too strong.
02:30 OK, so crack, a little bit more.
02:31 OK, yeah, oh!
02:32 Oh no!
02:33 Now that we have successfully combined all of our ingredients, we're gonna whisk, mix
02:41 these all together for about 2 minutes on a medium speed.
02:45 On a medium speed?
02:47 Well, that's if you have like an electric beater, but I don't use those anymore because
02:51 I got shocked.
02:52 That's why you shouldn't use them in the shower.
02:54 Is this medium speed?
02:55 That's, a little fast, a little faster.
02:56 Or is this too fast?
02:57 A little slower?
02:58 Is…
02:59 Sometimes it helps to be slow.
03:01 Once your cake batter is all mixed, we're gonna pour them into these little bowls, and
03:05 that's where we're gonna mix in the dye.
03:06 I left batter in the bowl because this will be our white cake.
03:09 We're gonna make 3 cakes, 1 red, 1 blue and 1 white.
03:12 So you just scoop.
03:13 It's edible?
03:14 Yeah, it's edible.
03:15 You can, OK.
03:16 So you take a little scooping.
03:17 I guess, even if you said no, this would be it.
03:18 Yeah?
03:19 How much, like, like that much?
03:20 Yeah, a little scoop.
03:21 And then put it in there.
03:22 And mix it?
03:23 Yeah, mix it.
03:24 Mix 'em around.
03:25 Wow, yours is like, already there.
03:26 Hold on, let me catch up.
03:27 Before you put in your batter, you're gonna wanna spray your pan, so your cakes don't
03:31 stick.
03:32 There you go.
03:33 Available in stores everywhere.
03:34 Pam, baby.
03:35 You guys should try, you should try to get a brand deal from Pam.
03:39 I should!
03:40 I don't know why I haven't done that.
03:42 Or box cakes, it's like all I use.
03:44 Since I gave you the idea, I expect a cut.
03:45 Are you ready?
03:46 Yeah.
03:47 Pour.
03:48 That's it?
03:49 What do you want your percentage to be?
03:50 All?
03:51 100%?
03:52 Oh, oh, oh, oh!
03:53 Look, that's not a cut, that's the whole thing.
03:55 Once you dump all your batter in, you're gonna just smooth it out.
03:58 Once you've got all the batter in the pan, and you have spread it out evenly,
04:01 you're gonna throw these in the oven, temperature is gonna be at 350, and you're
04:06 gonna throw them in for about 30 minutes.
04:08 Once your cakes are all done baking, we'll have the red cake, the white cake,
04:13 and the blue cake.
04:15 Make sure they've had plenty of time to cool off, and now we're going to cut and
04:19 frost them.
04:20 But Ro, something is different about the red cake.
04:24 What?
04:25 It's been cut into 3 equal pieces!
04:30 Yes!
04:31 We're gonna rotate.
04:32 Red, white, red, white, red, white, red!
04:36 Are these all cut in 3?
04:38 Well, since Davis already spoiled it, I'll show you how to cut them.
04:42 Um, these were pre-cut because…
04:46 I spilled this.
04:47 I didn't know if I could trust him.
04:49 I didn't know if he could cut these.
04:51 So you set your cake leveler like this, and then you just walk it through,
04:55 doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
04:57 And remember, just make sure your cake has had plenty of time to cool, you don't
05:00 want to do this when they're still warm, because they'll just crumble and fall
05:03 apart.
05:04 And then, ta-da!
05:07 Now we're going to layer the cakes, red, white, red, white, and frost them in-between.
05:11 The frosting kind of acts like glue for the next cake, and you just want to put
05:14 a really thin, thin layer.
05:15 Do you know, do you know how hard it is to not shove this in my mouth right now?
05:19 For those out there like me who don't understand why, why do you want thin
05:21 instead of thick frosting?
05:22 That was an honest question.
05:23 Are, what, really?
05:24 Yeah!
05:25 I don't know, like, why do you want it thin?
05:26 What if you made it evenly thick?
05:27 I know it's hard.
05:28 Like it's super thick, but it was still…
05:29 That's hard for me!
05:32 You have a, you have an automatic level.
05:34 I feel like this could have so many more uses than just leveling cakes.
05:37 You can also use this to strangle people!
05:39 Pick up a layer or two, be really careful, it will, it will break.
05:43 OK.
05:44 And put it right on top, you can do it.
05:46 OK, OK, OK!
05:47 BOOM!
05:48 Oh no!
05:49 It's slightly askew!
05:50 That's OK, that's OK, we'll just wiggle it.
05:51 Isn't there a theme song to Captain America?
05:55 Star Spangled Banner?
05:56 I feel like America songs are his songs.
05:59 Was that a dumb question?
06:00 Because he's a superhero, I thought, doesn't he have a song?
06:01 I don't know.
06:02 OK, I'm gonna do the red, are you ready?
06:03 I don't think he had like a TV show in the same way, he's been on a lot of them.
06:09 Oh wow, make it look so easy!
06:11 Now we're gonna build a second stack, white, red, white, and you'll see,
06:18 because we're gonna cut the inverse of the flag in the middle, and then,
06:23 I'll show you, it's magic!
06:25 It's really cool, it's magic, just trust, do you trust me?
06:28 You sound like a crazy person!
06:29 OK, once you finish frosting the second cake, just make sure you don't frost the top,
06:34 you don't need to yet.
06:35 And the reason is because, we're gonna cut out the inner part of the cake,
06:41 and stick it on top, and then we're gonna put the blue around it, so that when
06:44 you cut into it, it will look like the American flag.
06:47 Which is awesome!
06:48 We're gonna just put that…
06:49 Is that the top of the…
06:50 That's gonna be the guide, will you hold it down?
06:53 And I'm not gonna cut off your fingers, that's gonna be my promise.
06:57 And I'm just gonna…
06:59 Are you just gonna show me?
07:00 Try to eyeball it.
07:01 Just walk it, just walk it around.
07:02 Just walk it around, gonna make a cut.
07:05 Cut from the outside?
07:06 Yep, and I'm just gonna pry it off.
07:09 Oh my goodness!
07:10 Um, that can be eaten right now, right?
07:13 Like that's…
07:14 No, no, no, no!
07:15 Is it being used?
07:16 Not yet, not yet!
07:17 Well, we can eat it as a snack!
07:19 Just a second, just a second!
07:22 Next we're gonna cut out the blue one, I put this one in the freezer for a little
07:25 while, about 10 minutes to make it a little bit easier to move it.
07:28 OK, we're gonna do the same thing, only we're not gonna cut out the middle, we're
07:32 gonna cut out, we actually want the round piece.
07:34 OK, so we have to take the outer, and put it around and hope that it just fits.
07:39 Kind of pop out the middle.
07:40 Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
07:41 Did it!
07:42 Nailed it!
07:43 Oh, oh, oh!
07:44 Oh, oh, oh!
07:45 Oh, oh, oh!
07:46 Just wiggle it, just wiggle it!
07:48 Just make it fit!
07:49 Oh my god it worked!
07:50 It worked-ish!
07:51 Pro, pro, pro!
07:52 It's working!
07:53 It's working!
07:54 Phantom Menace reference.
07:55 Boom!
07:56 We did it!
07:57 Oh, oh, oh!
07:58 Yes!
07:59 OK, now you're gonna frost the whole thing.
08:08 After you've finished rolling out your fondant, like we did, um, now we're gonna
08:12 put it over the cake.
08:13 This part's a little bit tricky because it's very large, and I am not so much
08:18 a pro, but, we'll do this!
08:20 OK!
08:21 And, go!
08:22 Placement, placement!
08:23 Placement, it's on!
08:24 Perfect!
08:25 OK, now take this stuff off!
08:26 Once you've got the fondant on top, you're just gonna lightly press on the sides
08:29 of the cake, to get the fondant to stick to all the sides.
08:37 Now what you want to do is roll out the blue fondant, and I already did this
08:40 beforehand, and I rolled it into a long strip, and then I just cut a really long
08:44 rectangle, so it looks like this.
08:46 And we're gonna stick this all the way around the cake.
08:50 Ta-da!
09:04 We just finished cutting out all the red stripes, and now we're gonna add the
09:07 last shapes.
09:08 The final touches.
09:10 We already cut these out, they're ready to go.
09:13 OK, are you ready?
09:14 Yeah, well…
09:15 This one!
09:16 Last piece, final piece, going onto the cake right now!
09:19 Ta-da!
09:20 We finished our Captain America cake!
09:23 It's so cool!
09:25 I cannot wait to cut into this!
09:27 Thank you Davis, for helping me!
09:28 Thank you!
09:29 We did it!
09:30 We did it!
09:31 Thank you for having me!
09:32 We did it!
09:33 And teaching me a lot about cake!
09:34 And fondant!
09:35 And fondant!
09:36 Fondant!
09:37 If you have any other suggestions for any other Nerdy Nummies, please let me
09:41 know and leave me a comment and I will do my best to make them happen.
09:44 And a big, special thank you to the originator of this idea that we found on Reddit,
09:49 she has a Tumblr, and the Tumblr name is…
09:51 Love and Lots of Sugar.
09:54 Love and Lots of Sugar.
09:55 So thank you!
09:56 I hope you like it!
09:57 OK, bye-bye!
