00:04 Japan review
00:05 It's been a year since I moved to Japan and I thought it made sense to finally rate Japan
00:11 I will talk about the things I like and the things I don't like
00:14 Which seems to be the only two options available if you have opinions about this country
00:19 Ah, Nihon jaisuki, it's so shugoi
00:22 Or, did you know Japan is actually really bad? It's got a lot of society relations
00:26 Okay, I will list one good thing and bad thing and I will not hold back
00:31 There's no trash bins
00:33 Where am I gonna put my trash?
00:35 I have to put it in my pocket?
00:39 *grunt*
00:41 *grunt*
00:42 *grunt*
00:43 There's always these generic things that you hear
00:45 Or yes, when you visit, it's kinda weird
00:48 But then you realize it's not a big deal
00:50 Anyway, let's start off with number one
00:53 Reason I like Japan
00:54 It feels like a giant playground
00:56 No, I don't mean in the Logan Paul kind of sense of doing whatever the hell you want
01:00 *laughs*
01:01 But rather, there's infinite things, or at least it feels like
01:05 To explore and experience
01:07 And I've been here a year now and I don't think I'm gonna get bored anytime soon
01:10 Although I am having a child so I don't know how much more I have time to experience
01:14 *laughs*
01:15 But it really feels like a whole new world
01:17 And if you visited, you can probably relate to it
01:20 And I'm glad that even a year in it still feels incredibly fresh
01:23 And I even would say that you realize that the best part of Japan aren't the touristy places
01:29 Kinda obviously, but
01:31 There's so many areas that I found that I really enjoy visiting
01:34 And this is probably more specific to me, but
01:37 You know, Tokyo's very busy and
01:39 So many times I just catch myself surrounded by what feels like hundreds of people
01:44 And they have no idea who I am
01:46 *laughs*
01:47 Everyone is just doing their own thing
01:49 And that feels so f*cking good
01:52 No one's staring at me
01:54 No one's following me
01:56 No one's being weird
01:58 You guys are weird, I'm just kidding
02:00 I just love the feeling of being able to exist in public
02:04 And not worrying about what everyone else is doing
02:07 Like I've said this before, but I genuinely enjoy talking to fans or when people approach me
02:12 It always makes me happy, but
02:14 It can be kinda frustrating to always wanting to just do your own thing
02:18 And always be "eh, oh, eh, eh, eh"
02:20 You know?
02:21 So yeah, let's move on to the bad things of Japan
02:25 Number one reason Japan is bad
02:27 It's kind of a heavy subject and
02:29 I haven't seen anyone else really talk about it
02:31 It's not brought up very often at least
02:33 And that is...
02:34 Cones
02:36 There's too many cones in Japan
02:38 Once you see it, you cannot unsee it
02:41 They're everywhere
02:43 They say "Oh, Japan has so many vending machines, there's like five per one person"
02:47 No, the opposite
02:48 There's more cones than people
02:50 Why are there so many cones? I need to know
02:52 We got the tall ones
02:54 We got the small ones
02:56 We got the funny ones
02:58 The cute ones
02:59 The sexy ones
03:00 I do like those
03:01 I just don't understand, did whoever plays these cones think I'm just gonna barge through?
03:05 Oh, thank god there's cones here
03:07 Otherwise I had no idea what I was gonna-
03:09 And I realize the cone history of Japan stretches centuries, okay?
03:14 If you played Animal Crossing, sometimes-
03:16 It's a Japanese game, so sometimes
03:18 You get these items, right?
03:20 And you're like "Oh, that's kinda weird, I don't know exactly what that is"
03:22 But it's probably something Japanese
03:24 And then you get the bamboo thing
03:26 And you're like "What the hell is that? What am I even gonna do with that?"
03:28 And then you see it in real life here in Japan
03:30 And you're like "Holy sh*t, it's a cone!"
03:32 That's a cone!
03:34 They're everywhere!
03:36 I feel like they are following me
03:38 *sad music*
03:40 I'm glad I was able to talk about this
03:42 I'm for one, I'm willing to call out Japan
03:44 Knock it off, man
03:45 No more cones
03:46 There's enough cones
03:47 Let me tell you something even better than cones
03:49 You may have noticed
03:51 New merch!
03:53 Finally, it's been forever
03:54 My mom came over
03:55 She had unofficial merch
03:57 'Cause I literally have no other merch
03:58 I haven't had merch
04:00 I'm sorry, mom
04:01 So we spruced up the logo
04:03 Got a cool back design
04:05 The team that worked on it really truly understand
04:07 *swoosh*
04:08 My brand, and I think they did such a good job
04:10 These pieces look amazing
04:12 And I think you guys are gonna really like them as well
04:14 These are available for a limited time only
04:17 So make sure you order now
04:19 So excited to finally have this merch available
04:21 Thanks to Amaze for making this happen
04:23 We are gonna have one piece that will stay on the store
04:26 So my mom will not buy the wrong merch
04:28 But for a limited time, that piece will be available in this color
04:32 Off-white kind of color
04:34 It looks really nice
04:35 And then after that, you can still get it
04:37 But not in this color
04:38 Ah, that's...
04:40 I know, you want this one
04:41 Yeah, I get it
04:43 *laughs*
04:44 So yeah, check that out if you're interested
04:46 I'm so happy about these designs and I hope you guys will like them as well
04:49 Alright, reason number two, I like Japan, yay
04:51 When we first announced that we were gonna move to Japan
04:54 There was so many people just saying how bad Japan is
04:59 Actually, did you know Japan is really bad?
05:01 Did you know this?
05:02 I have to list all these reasons now
05:04 Because everyone is like, "thing" and then "thing Japan"
05:07 Ah, so I have to tell them
05:09 No, it's actually sh*t
05:11 One thing in particular that people said was that
05:14 Old people really don't like foreigners
05:17 They hate them
05:18 So when I was gonna stop by to say hi to our neighbors
05:21 Who's a little older, at least some of them
05:23 I was terrified
05:24 I heard all these stories, you know
05:26 What are they gonna do to us?
05:28 So I had my guard up, ready for the worst
05:30 And I was met with nothing but kindness and welcoming
05:34 And I felt like a total dick for having these preconceived ideas
05:39 Thanks to other people!
05:41 And just a side comment, like, yes
05:43 There are definitely, probably, people that don't like foreigners
05:47 And all that stuff
05:48 But I realized I should let my own experiences
05:51 Dictate how I feel about certain things
05:53 Maybe that's just ignoring a problem, I don't know
05:56 It just feels like it's a bad way to approach life
05:59 If you always have a negative expectation, you know
06:01 It's smile and people may smile back
06:07 Smile back!
06:09 Thank you
06:10 Sometimes they don't and that's okay, you know
06:12 Anyway, my point being, Japanese people are very
06:15 In my own experience
06:17 Are very nice and friendly
06:19 The majority at least
06:20 And yes, even to foreigners
06:22 I feel like they're especially nice to foreigners
06:24 Because they think we're like a kid lost at Disneyland or something
06:28 I just asked for directions
06:30 I didn't need you to walk me for half an hour
06:33 To the specific place I was going
06:34 But thank you, I appreciate it
06:36 A lot of times I go bouldering alone
06:38 And there's always other groups of people being supportive
06:41 And yelling like "Ganbatte!"
06:43 Like "Go, you can do it!"
06:44 I love it, I think it's great
06:46 You know, or if you're small talking with people
06:48 People genuinely want to communicate with you
06:51 And I love having those moments
06:52 But of course, there's times where people are like
06:54 "Oh, you're a foreigner? I don't feel like even trying"
06:57 Which I get, it's fine
06:59 Speaking of which, reason I don't like Japan number two
07:03 The language
07:05 I have lived here for a year
07:07 And I'm not fluent in Japanese
07:09 I am dumb, I am very dumb
07:13 I remember the moment we moved here
07:15 I had studied some Japanese
07:17 And I was like
07:19 Let's test out this knowledge
07:22 That I have acquired
07:24 Let's go, I'm just gonna
07:26 Come in
07:27 It's gonna be daijoubu
07:29 And you enter a store for the first time
07:31 And they're like "Fukuro goru you desu ka?"
07:34 "Huh?"
07:36 "What?"
07:37 "Ikka barai desu ka?"
07:38 "What?"
07:39 "Oshihara hoho erabi kudasai"
07:42 "Hoho what?"
07:43 The classic, the most common experiences that you have
07:47 Aren't necessarily what you're taught in the textbook
07:50 Yeah, I know
07:51 I think that's the same for anyone learning a language for the first time
07:54 But don't even get me started on the kanji main
07:57 What the f*ck is this?
07:59 I feel like Japanese is such a hard language, obviously
08:02 But I don't think people realize how hard it is
08:04 At least me personally
08:06 Because the more you learn, the more you realize you don't know sh*t
08:10 For English speakers, Japanese is considered one of the most difficult languages
08:14 Because it's just so different
08:16 I listed it as bad because that was my first kind of experience with it coming here
08:20 But the more I interact with people
08:22 The more it feels like I'm unlocking new skills, you know?
08:26 Oh, I made a phone call for the first time
08:28 I could ask someone over the phone
08:30 I know, big deal
08:31 But it's like, oh, I can actually do that
08:33 Or even just having a small, tiniest, sh*ttiest conversation with a stranger
08:38 It's still something and it feels good
08:41 You start to all of a sudden understand, you know, a movie
08:45 If you're watching, oh, I understand actually what's going on here
08:48 Or I can play games and kind of get what they're saying
08:52 I have to look up words, obviously
08:54 But to me, all those new experiences that it unlocks to me is very rewarding
08:59 Even though it's such a challenge
09:01 I would actually now say it's a good thing
09:03 Ha! I played it on its head
09:05 It was a good thing all along
09:07 But I obviously have a long f*cking way to go
09:10 And it just, I don't think it will ever stop
09:12 Reason number three, I like Japan
09:14 This has nothing to do with Japan, to say
09:17 It's more related to me taking a more relaxed approach to YouTube
09:21 For my entire 20s, I did nothing but YouTube
09:25 That was my life, and that's okay
09:28 But I also think it was a little toxic, probably
09:31 You know, if I wasn't making videos, I sure as hell was thinking about making videos
09:35 I uploaded videos during our honeymoon
09:37 And it feels really good to finally be free from it, you know
09:41 And I can discover other things in life
09:43 There are other things in life!
09:45 A new hobby is an interest that I've always wanted to do
09:48 I can do and have so much fun with it
09:50 Surfing, I knew I would love for the longest time
09:52 And I finally get to do it
09:54 And it's so f*cking amazing
09:56 I love learning new things
09:58 Anything that isn't necessarily connected to all of this on the internet
10:02 And that is something I'm very, very grateful that I discovered
10:06 So yeah, it's not really Japan
10:08 I could have done that anywhere
10:10 But it's largely why I enjoy it so much here
10:12 Reason I don't like Japan number three, this is probably the most trickiest one
10:16 And it's the rules
10:18 *What are the ruuuuuuuuules?*
10:20 Japan has so many rules
10:24 And it's a bit conflicting for me to complain about
10:27 Because a lot of the best stuff about Japan
10:29 Not the best stuff, but
10:31 A lot of the reasons why Japan works so well
10:33 Is because of the rules
10:35 You know, the trains are always on time
10:37 Things just work in general
10:39 It's hard to explain
10:40 The streets are clean
10:42 People aren't loud in public, and so on
10:44 And these are sort of societal rules that make it happen, more or less
10:48 But sometimes there are rules that just don't make any sense
10:53 And I have no problem following rules as long as I understand the reason for it
10:59 You know?
11:00 Don't talk on the phone on the train
11:01 Because it's generally annoying when other people do that to you
11:05 A lot of it is just be thoughtful of other people
11:08 It's not just about you
11:10 And that just makes it more pleasant for everyone
11:12 But one rule especially which I talked about before
11:15 Is the fact that because of COVID
11:18 I'm not allowed to be in the delivery room for our baby
11:21 For more than two hours
11:23 That's because of COVID rules
11:25 It just doesn't make sense to me
11:27 And I tell people about this
11:29 Like family and friends
11:30 And they're always like
11:31 "Well, why don't you just ask them?"
11:33 Or like "Why don't you talk to them? I'm sure you can...
11:35 There's gotta be some way"
11:36 And it's like
11:37 No
11:38 It's Japan, okay?
11:40 There are rules, and people follow the rules
11:42 For better or worse, you know?
11:44 So the more time I spend here
11:46 The more time I encounter these sort of rules
11:49 That in my head at least don't make sense
11:51 And I don't want to make it seem like I'm above it
11:53 Or like "Oh, I don't get it, so therefore I'm above it"
11:56 But it's still really frustrating, I think
11:58 Because yeah, rules exist for a reason
12:00 And even though the reason might not be obvious to you
12:04 They are usually there for some sort of practicality
12:07 I don't know
12:08 I'm just trying... I don't get it, man
12:10 So, lastly
12:13 The reason I like Japan
12:14 I feel like there should be a word for it
12:16 It's more of a feeling than anything
12:18 And it could be happening at any point during the day
12:21 Maybe I'm riding a bicycle
12:23 It's sunny outside and surrounded by trees
12:26 And it's just pleasant in general
12:28 A warm wind hits your face
12:30 And you just sort of have that moment
12:32 Where it feels just so amazing
12:34 It feels like you're living a dream
12:36 It could be just walking my dogs
12:38 And then out in the distance
12:40 Everything is clear
12:42 And you see Mount Fuji popping out
12:44 I'm surfing and the sun is setting
12:46 And it's turning the whole ocean to look pink
12:49 And it's just one of those moments
12:51 Where you feel like you're living in a dream
12:53 I just feel like "How is this real?"
12:55 I don't even believe it myself
12:57 I catch myself a lot in those kind of moments living here
13:00 And it's just a wonderful thing
13:02 Happy days
13:05 I feel really silly talking about it
13:07 Because it's not like these things don't exist anywhere for anyone
13:10 It's not like "Oh, Japan, ah"
13:12 But moving here I feel like I definitely get those moments more often
13:16 It's not like I wasn't happy in the UK or wherever
13:19 But I think just in general
13:21 It has changed me and my priorities
13:24 And as a person to the better
13:26 In a weird way
13:28 And I realize a lot of it is also very specific to me
13:32 And my circumstance
13:34 I have the opportunity to not work as much anymore
13:38 And I have the opportunity to have a lot of freedom
13:41 And not engage in a lot of the bad parts of the tough work ethic in Japan, for example
13:46 So I think me specifically feeling like I don't get recognized
13:50 So that's also a reason I really enjoy here
13:52 A lot of the reasons I enjoy Japan is very specific to me at least
13:56 And people like Japan for different reasons, obviously
13:58 I'm not surprised or necessarily think people are wrong
14:02 To try to dispel Japan from being this holy mecca or anything like that
14:07 But I think ultimately it's an amazing place to visit
14:10 You should definitely do it
14:11 But I also think not everyone is going to enjoy living here
14:14 That's my big asterisk, basically
14:16 I feel like if you're content as a person
14:18 You should be able to be happy where you live
14:21 At least for me, for example, living in the UK
14:23 I was just as happy as well
14:25 But like I said, catch myself in these happy moments more often here
14:29 Which I'm very grateful for
14:31 So yeah, I hope that sort of summarizes it
14:34 I would put Japan S tier
14:36 Thank you for watching this video
14:37 I'll see you guys next time
14:39 Peace
