00:00 [applause]
00:03 Tomorrow, tomorrow on our show, Scott and Channing will be here,
00:07 and the Broadway hit, "Pal Joey."
00:09 And country singing star Dierks Bentley is going to perform for us, y'all.
00:13 Okay, so now here she comes.
00:15 She's the anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News.
00:18 Tonight she hosts Katie Couric's All Access Grammy special.
00:22 So please welcome Miss Katie Couric.
00:25 [applause]
00:36 The beauty, Katie Couric.
00:38 Hi, how are you?
00:39 How are you?
00:40 Katie Couric.
00:41 I'm so excited to be here.
00:43 That smile makes me so happy.
00:45 Every time I see your smile, it's the perfect smile.
00:48 It is a great smile, no doubt about it.
00:50 So, boy, that was a nice interview you had with the president last night.
00:53 Yeah, well, he invited all the network anchors down to the Oval Office,
00:57 which was always so humbling and exciting to be in the Oval Office.
01:01 But I think he wanted to talk about pushing his economic stimulus package
01:05 through Congress, now in the Senate.
01:07 And instead, of course, Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination
01:11 for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
01:13 So he found himself really in a defensive posture,
01:16 when I don't think he really wanted to.
01:17 And does that change the way you handle the interview?
01:19 When that information comes out, suddenly, are you--do you switch gears?
01:24 Well, you know, it was funny, because I started--
01:26 when I was preparing my questions, I took the Amtrak down.
01:29 And when I was preparing my questions, I was quoting this New York Times editorial
01:33 that said that Tom Daschle should bow out, that there are too many questions
01:37 and that this really sets a bad precedent for other--
01:41 makes it look as if there's a double standard.
01:43 And so at 12, I got a message on my BlackBerry that said he's withdrawn,
01:47 so I had to kind of just reconfigure my questions.
01:50 So--
01:51 Why don't they tell him, when they get go, when they hear a little rumor
01:54 that they might be nominated for something, if they have a problem,
01:57 why don't they come clean and say, "Don't even get involved with me"?
02:00 You know, I know.
02:01 I think they had a questionnaire that he did not necessarily say he had tax issues
02:06 on the questionnaire, but in fairness to him--and I don't know all the ins and outs of it--
02:09 but he was given a limousine by a private equity fund that he, I guess, was consulting for.
02:15 And I don't think he realized, perhaps--I mean, you wonder who's doing their taxes,
02:20 like H&R Block or TurboTax or whatever.
02:23 Right, right.
02:24 Not that there's anything wrong with H&R Block, but, you know, when you're at that high level,
02:28 you really want to make sure--
02:29 You would have an export saying, "That has to be declared."
02:31 And I don't think he knew--I don't think initially--that that would be considered taxable income
02:35 or something, so it ended up, obviously, he paid what? Something all told, $140,000.
02:40 Something like that.
02:41 And then after Tim Geithner, and then a deputy of the OMB had to withdraw because she had her own tax issues.
02:47 I think that the Obama administration realized, as did Tom Daschle,
02:51 that it just--the appearance it gave to the public was--especially for a man who campaigned on ethics reform.
02:57 Absolutely. It's embarrassing.
02:58 It's a big blow, too, because Tom Daschle was such a key element.
03:02 Well, I think he's really well-liked. He's very knowledgeable on health care.
03:05 I think he's actually been working on health care reform issues up to this point since he didn't win re-election.
03:12 So I think it is a big blow.
03:14 But senators can be paid consultants?
03:16 I think--well, after he left the Senate.
03:18 Oh, I see. Okay.
03:19 Yeah, he lost, so.
03:21 All right, good. So how's the president feeling about the stimulus bill?
03:24 Because, you know, that is very controversial as well.
03:27 Yeah, you know, I think he sort of--he invited the Democratic leadership to the White House a couple of nights ago
03:33 and apparently really gave them their marching orders.
03:36 He was quite blunt.
03:37 And I think what he's trying to do is take some of these--what could be construed as partisan pet projects--out of the bill.
03:43 Absolutely. It's called pork to a lot of people.
03:46 Well, you know, he said that not a lot of people--
03:47 Well, you know, he said that not a lot of people--
03:48 --have earmarks, and he says actually many of them are good policy.
03:51 You know, for example, I asked him about this millions--millions of dollars for weatherization of homes.
03:57 And he said, you know, that may sound like a superfluous project, but that puts people to work, it lowers energy costs.
04:05 There are some things in there--in the bill that I think are very legitimate, but there are other spending things,
04:10 like teaching kids about green construction.
04:13 I think at this point in time, even though that may be a noble endeavor and worth taxpayer dollars,
04:18 right now I think--
04:19 Where we are.
04:20 --they're going to have to pull out some of those things because it's ballooned to $900 billion, the stimulus package.
04:25 And it's going to add to the deficit.
04:27 Did you tell him, "I'm K.D. Corrick, and this is what I think"?
04:29 I did, and he said--he said he would take it under consideration.
04:33 When is your confirmation hearing? What can we expect at an announcement?
04:36 You know, I think they're really trying to get something through, but it is, I think, loaded up with some things that are going to have to come out.
04:42 Yeah, I think so, too.
04:43 But he's so relaxed, you guys.
04:44 Yeah.
04:45 Oh, he's terrific in the interviews.
04:46 Yeah, he's relaxed and confident and, you know--
04:49 Looked a little glum in today's papers, though, with all that bad news.
04:52 That was an unfair picture.
04:53 Right.
04:54 He was sitting in a great class listening to a second grader.
04:55 He was sitting in a child seat.
04:56 It made it sound as if, you know, one of his cabinet officials was telling him really bad news.
05:02 He was listening to a second grader.
05:04 That's why, you know, those pictures aren't necessarily fair.
05:07 Really? The press would do that to a guy?
05:10 We'll be right back in a moment.
05:12 Still ahead on Live Baseball, manager Joe Torre talks about his new book and his years with the New York Yankees.
05:21 [applause]
05:24 [applause]
05:29 Katie Cork. Everybody loves Katie Cork.
05:32 And incidentally, how are things now with your anchoring?
05:35 In the beginning, there was, "Eh, the paper's every day," you know.
05:38 Yeah. I had a baptism by fire.
05:41 I think, you know, I've settled into the job.
05:43 You sure have.
05:44 I'm really proud of the quality of work that everybody at CBS News does.
05:47 You're terrific at it.
05:48 And I think we did a--if I can say this--I think we did a really good job covering the campaign.
05:54 Was it tough in the beginning to live through all that?
05:56 Yeah, of course. I mean, nobody really likes to be trashed constantly, like, on an hourly basis.
06:02 But, you know, I always tried to be sanguine about it and think, you know, it always--
06:08 it says more about the person who's writing it than it does often about the subject, about their own issues.
06:14 So, anyway, that makes me feel better.
06:16 But you're a terrific role model for women and young girls and really about hard work and what hard work does and how it does pay off.
06:24 Thank you, Kelly.
06:25 I wrote Katie a fan letter. I said, "Hang in there. You'd rather get it done than you got it done."
06:30 See, that's great.
06:31 But you've had a crush on Katie for years.
06:33 Well, no, no, no. Just to be a knob on her.
06:35 Katie has had a crush on me.
06:37 Well, it's a mutual crush.
06:38 And I'm going to show you pictures to prove what I am saying.
06:42 Her birthday party is not that long ago. Nice party.
06:45 Everybody was happy to be there.
06:47 I just walked in. All I wanted to say was, "Happy birthday, Katie."
06:50 And this is what happened.
06:51 There was some--
06:52 Look at this. Right there. I mean, come on.
06:54 Unbelievable.
06:56 I'm just saying, "Happy birthday."
06:57 That's a little Randy there, Joe.
06:59 That's a great shot, by the way.
07:01 It goes on. Wait a minute.
07:03 Wait a minute.
07:05 She slips behind my back. I don't know where she is, what she's doing.
07:08 What's going on there?
07:10 What's happening here?
07:11 And then finally, the closing picture.
07:13 Here are my hands. Where are hers?
07:15 You've just given up.
07:17 Okay.
07:18 Oh, I don't want to talk about it anymore.
07:20 I like where you cropped that photo.
07:22 I remember, though, before that photo,
07:25 when you went to a Christmas party at Al Roker's house.
07:30 And you said that you were Goose from behind.
07:33 And you turned around.
07:34 That wasn't me. That was Ann Curry.
07:35 He said it was you.
07:37 No, as a matter of fact, I tracked that one down.
07:39 It was Al Roker.
07:41 Can't go anywhere these days.
07:44 Okay, let's talk about your special.
07:46 Yeah.
07:47 Is it all-access Grammy special?
07:48 I'm very, very busy.
07:49 You know, the Grammys are on CBS on Sundays.
07:51 So Susan Zarensky, who is a great person and produces 48 Hours,
07:55 said, "Do you want to do a Grammy special?"
07:57 I said, "Absolutely. It'd be fun.
07:58 It'd be a little different than what I do every night.
08:00 I have to deliver some pretty glum news consistently these days."
08:04 So I profiled Lil Wayne.
08:06 Lil Wayne.
08:07 Lil Wayne.
08:08 Lil Wayne.
08:09 So, so nice and actually very sweet.
08:12 I was scared because, you know, he's a gangster.
08:14 [laughter]
08:16 He said to me, "You know, Miss Katie, I'm a gangster."
08:19 I was like, "Okay, well, Miss Katie, at least you said that."
08:21 Did you say, "Well, I'm down with that, Lil Wayne"?
08:23 Yeah.
08:24 I said, "I'm cheeky with that."
08:26 And I was like, "Oh, that's not really hip anymore, is it?"
08:29 [laughter]
08:30 Did you do things with these people?
08:31 I went bowling with Lil Wayne.
08:33 Bowling with Lil Wayne.
08:34 He owns his own bowling balls and bowling shoes.
08:36 He's quite a bowler.
08:38 He's been bowling since he was 16.
08:40 He kind of did a few gutter balls while we were doing it.
08:43 So I said I'd edit those out.
08:45 Kind of like President Obama, actually.
08:47 And then I went golfing with Justin Timberlake, who is a doll.
08:50 Oh, look, everybody's looking at you.
08:52 [laughter]
08:53 He is so nice.
08:55 You guys, I'm sure, have had him on the show.
08:57 He's a multi-talented, too.
08:59 Is he a great golfer or a better one?
09:01 He's ranked number 15 of all musician golfers.
09:05 I didn't know that they ranked them.
09:07 [laughter]
09:09 Yeah, I'm not sure.
09:10 That's really good.
09:11 He's got a six handicap.
09:12 That's good, right?
09:13 That's very good.
09:14 And he's got his own clothing line.
09:16 He's in movies.
09:17 He's in skits on SNL.
09:19 Very funny.
09:20 Very raunchy skits.
09:22 I couldn't really talk about that one skit.
09:25 We have a clip of you playing a little golf with Justin.
09:28 Okay, so let's take a look at this.
09:30 So am I appropriately outfitted?
09:33 You look slamming, as the kids are saying.
09:35 I'm not a golfer, but I am playing one on TV today.
09:38 Okay, all right.
09:39 That will make two of us.
09:40 Yeah, no, that's not true.
09:41 You're good.
09:42 [wind]
10:00 The idea is to turn your back like this.
10:04 And then when you release, you just kind of let it fall through.
10:08 And then you go--
10:09 I'm not a golf coach, by the way.
10:11 No, but you're doing a good job.
10:13 [golf swing]
10:14 [cheering]
10:19 You're ready.
10:20 What do you think?
10:21 You're ready.
10:23 Boy, oh boy.
10:24 See that?
10:25 He wrapped his arms around you.
10:27 I got that big belt at the club.
10:28 Can you help me a little more with my wrist?
10:30 One more time.
10:31 I'm not sure if I got it.
10:32 He really is cute and nice, though.
10:34 I was very impressed at all that he does.
10:36 It's great to see the other side of the musicians.
10:39 Yeah, definitely.
10:40 And also, we profiled Katy Perry.
10:42 You know Katy Perry.
10:43 Do you like her big song?
10:44 She kissed on her arm, and she liked it.
10:46 I wanted to see if people liked that.
10:48 Katy Perry and I are old friends.
10:50 And then Taylor Swift.
10:51 Oh, Taylor Swift.
10:52 Hugely popular.
10:53 I love this audience.
10:54 They're like, "Aha!"
10:55 She's 19, has had the number one record for eight weeks now.
10:59 Very hot right now.
11:00 Wrote her first song at 12.
11:01 Really cute.
11:02 It's good stories.
11:03 All right, so it'll be on tonight at 9 o'clock on CBS.
11:07 Katy Perry's "All Access" drives us crazy.
11:09 And she'll be on the news tonight, too, right?
11:11 Yes, and tonight on "60 Minutes," Summer Sullivan.
11:15 Oh, yeah.
11:16 We'll talk about that.
11:17 We'll be right back with Joe Coleman.
