00:00 On to the 8th and final stage of the Dauphiné.
00:17 Jonas Wingergaard has stamped his authority all over this race and he is set to win it
00:22 for the first time today.
00:23 He can even round things out in style with another stage victory, although he says that
00:28 is not the number one priority.
00:48 Meanwhile there will be a fierce battle for the podium with only a handful of seconds
00:52 separating Yates, O'Connor and Hindley before today's brutal final climb.
01:15 The mountains classification will also be settled.
01:18 The current king of the mountains, Victor Campenaerts, will have to be aggressive if
01:22 he wants to hold off the competition.
01:41 Stage 8 is a rollercoaster routing of 153km with 4000m of elevation gain.
01:48 Six climbs in total, including the Haute Categorie Caldougranie, which is 9.6km at 8.6%.
01:55 The final hike to La Bastille meanwhile is absolutely hellish, 1.8km at an eye-watering
02:01 14.2%.
02:02 It's an XXL version of the iconic Mur de Huy.
02:09 Julian Alaphilippe had decided to celebrate his 31st birthday by going up the road.
02:13 The former world champion began the day 7th overall after what he has described as a magnificent
02:18 week at this Dauphiné.
02:20 Campenaerts had been part of the earlier breakaway, taking 10 points over the first two climbs,
02:25 but by the Caldougranie there were only four men in the lead.
02:29 Alaphilippe, Giulio Ciccone, Clément Champuzin and Tish Benoit, one of Vingegaard's lieutenants.
02:37 They were being chased by Jonathan Castroviejo and David de la Cruz, with the Jumbo-Visma-led
02:42 peloton only a minute and 25 seconds back.
02:47 It wasn't looking ideal then for the escapees.
02:49 De la Cruz was eventually caught, but Castroviejo pushed on as they hit the Col de Coucheron,
02:54 with the gaps remaining steady.
02:59 Castroviejo joining the breakaway just before the summit, making it five at the front.
03:04 Benoit first over the line, followed by Ciccone and Champuzin.
03:12 This quintet working together to reach the foot of the Col de Porte, with the peloton
03:16 still around a minute and a half back.
03:21 Then with 24km to go, Ciccone put in a stinging attack.
03:25 Only Alaphilippe was able to hold on, with Champuzin, Benoit and Castroviejo falling
03:29 away, the Italian looking on supreme form.
03:33 Castroviejo and Benoit were struggling to close the gap as Champuzin was caught by the
03:37 GC favourites.
03:39 Vingegaard and co inching ever closer, and so 3km from the summit Ciccone went again,
03:44 and this time Alaphilippe couldn't follow.
03:47 Further back, Adam Yates attacked from the peloton, with Vingegaard just easing his way
03:52 into the wheel.
03:55 Little by little the GC group came back together with the likes of O'Connor, Hindley, Haig
03:59 and Mata, and they soon caught up to Alaphilippe.
04:03 Ciccone had around 30 seconds when he got to the summit, as Antonio Pedrero also made
04:08 a move.
04:10 The riders sweeping down towards the fearsome final climb of this dauphiné.
04:17 Ciccone embarking on La Bastille with 50 seconds in hand, enough for a climber of his calibre
04:22 to go for the win.
04:24 The gradient's really starting to hurt as Vingegaard pulled clear of the GC group, followed
04:28 by Yates.
04:29 But they wouldn't catch up to Ciccone, the Italian rounding out his week on a high note.
04:42 Well Ciccone hasn't got the sunglasses to throw to the crowd today, but it looks like
04:49 he's going to take the victory.
04:52 Giulio Ciccone of Trek-Segafredo comes up to the top of La Bastille, 20km solo.
05:02 His tenth win of his career and the third win of a great season.
05:12 Behind him now, Jonas Vingegaard has ridden away from all the other favourites.
05:19 It's not going to be the victory today, but Jonas Vingegaard is now ready for the Tour
05:24 de France.
05:25 July beckons, the form is so impressive.
05:34 Ever since he took the Tour de France's yellow jersey at the Superplanche de Belfie in 2019,
05:39 we've known that Ciccone can handle himself on the steep climbs.
05:42 The Trek-Segafredo leader storming up La Bastille to take his tenth career win.
05:47 After the frustration of missing the Giro d'Italia because of a late Covid-19 positive,
05:51 this will really boost his confidence before the Tour.
05:54 As a bonus, he also nabbed a Polkadot jersey.
05:58 The last 500 was really, really long.
06:01 But you know, with all the people there, it was really nice.
06:08 So when I looked behind, I saw that I was still in front with some gaps.
06:17 I just went straight.
06:20 I'm really happy.
06:23 Ciccone taking his third win of the season ahead of the top three overall, Vingegaard,
06:27 Yates and O'Connor.
06:29 An impressive fifth place for Guillaume Martin ahead of Jai Hindley.
06:32 Vingegaard completing a dominant week.
06:35 It's, of course, very, very big for me to win this race.
06:44 It's one of the biggest races in the world.
06:49 So of course, I'm very, very happy to win.
06:51 And once again, the team did amazing today.
06:55 They were really super, super strong and I was never alone.
07:00 So yeah, that was completely perfect what they did today.
07:05 Vingegaard securing his third stage race of 2023 after Gran Camino in Istulia, Basque
07:10 country with the biggest winning margin of the 21st century.
07:14 Three Aussies in the top five with Martin the highest placed Frenchman in sixth.
07:17 Alaphilippe was just inside the top ten.
07:21 Christophe Laporte led the green jersey standings from start to finish.
07:25 In the end, his nearest challenger was his teammate Vingegaard, 14 points back.
07:30 It was a fantastic battle for polka dots with Gicone pipping Campenaerts at the last.
07:35 The Belgian appeared to have done enough, but a superb haul of 41 points on the final
07:39 stage handed the Italian a narrow victory.
07:45 The white jersey also changed hands on the final day with Carlos Rodriguez finishing as
07:49 the best young rider.
07:50 We will no doubt be seeing plenty more of the Spanish champion and riders like Paul,
07:55 Johannesson and Martinez.
07:59 It has been a dauphiné demonstration from Jonas Vingegaard.
08:03 Last year's Tour de France winner is definitely ready to defend his title in a few weeks'
08:07 time.
08:08 Do join us again on July 1st when it all kicks off in Bilbao.
08:11 And thanks very much for watching.
