00:00 - All right, y'all have your instructions
00:01 in the dressing room.
00:02 Protect the mandate, total mental.
00:03 Protect yourself at all times.
00:05 Tug of war, touch 'em up.
00:06 - Shushu Carrington just turned 26
00:10 nine days after his last fight,
00:13 which was a knockout victory over Brandon Chambers,
00:18 April 8th on the Shakur Stevenson Undercard.
00:22 And this is a young man who has to be on the fast track, Dre,
00:26 because he's 26 years old now.
00:27 - Yeah, he's a little bit older than me.
00:29 - Yeah, he's a little bit older
00:30 than some of the younger guys,
00:31 the 21s, 22 year olds,
00:33 but he's got the mindset,
00:35 he's got the skillset to do it.
00:38 - And tonight he's in against a bigger fighter
00:40 because Luis Porozo at 32 years old,
00:42 even though they're the same height
00:44 and they have the same reach,
00:45 he just looks big.
00:47 - Porozo looks a lot bigger than Carrington,
00:50 not in height, but in stature.
00:52 He just looks thicker in the body.
00:53 And, but again, when you have an IQ
00:56 and you know how to box, size isn't everything.
00:59 - The words "Forever Ike" on the back of Shushu Carrington
01:06 are in reference to his brother,
01:08 who was a victim of gun violence out in Brownsville.
01:11 - Carrington is a very fluid fighter,
01:19 doesn't really have a style.
01:21 He's like water.
01:23 One minute he's boxing,
01:25 next minute he's fighting,
01:26 next minute, like you see right now,
01:28 he's standing his ground in your face,
01:29 but you can't really hit him.
01:31 He shows a lot of different looks very early in his career.
01:34 - I mean, he's just a fighter who is so far advanced
01:38 beyond what his record and his age show.
01:41 He's seasoned and he's also very media savvy.
01:45 Just, he's a complete package.
01:47 And he's got that Brownsville swagger as well, so.
01:52 - No doubt about it.
01:53 You always talk about going to tournaments as a young kid
01:57 and there was something about the New York guys
01:58 that they just walk different.
02:01 - Yeah, every region had their own flavor
02:03 and their own style and their own swag.
02:05 And New York kids, back in the amateurs,
02:08 they always seemed older than their age
02:10 and they always seemed like they had to grow up fast
02:13 and they just, they seemed like old kids
02:15 even though they were young.
02:17 - There's that one-two combination from Shushu Carrington
02:20 and that speed on the inside
02:22 and then a left hook from the fighter out of Brooklyn.
02:25 - Porozo thought he wanted to be there.
02:27 He landed a shot or partially landed a shot
02:29 that Carrington blocked.
02:31 Then Carrington let off a clip of about five shots
02:33 and each of them traveled a half of an inch.
02:35 - And each of them found the chin of Porozo.
02:39 Ooh, nice counter right from Carrington.
02:44 - Look at that, high level stuff right there.
02:46 - Shoot.
02:47 And he's in your face.
02:51 You called that, Dre, he's like right there
02:54 and he's gonna punish you if you make a mistake.
02:56 - His style, the style he's employing right now
02:59 unnerves a fighter because he's close, but then he's away.
03:02 And then he's to the side of you and then he hits you.
03:04 That unnerves an opponent.
03:06 - Porozo's corner is yelling,
03:09 you've got to commit because he's eating you up
03:11 on the inside.
03:12 - He doesn't want to commit
03:13 because he's getting countered like he just did.
03:16 So now you see Porozo inside,
03:19 hesitating when early in the round he was thrown.
03:21 - The eyes of Shushu Carrington tell you the story
03:29 of who he is in that ring as he walks over to his corner
03:32 and it'll be Smooth K. Karoma with the instructions.
03:37 (crowd cheering)
03:39 (upbeat music)
03:42 (crowd cheering)
03:45 (upbeat music)
03:47 (crowd cheering)
03:50 (upbeat music)
03:53 - Dre, it takes a special level of confidence
04:18 to reel off five punches in a row.
04:20 - Yeah, you typically see this
04:21 like in the middle of a fight, maybe.
04:22 But you see him right here in the pocket,
04:24 not panicking, one, two, three.
04:26 Just missed the body shot that grazed
04:29 the heart area of Porozo,
04:31 but that's when all the trouble started from Porozo
04:34 and that's when he knew he really had a problem in this fight.
04:36 - Luis Porozo has his corner man, Raimundo Hernandez,
04:40 who he's been working with out in Puerto Rico
04:43 and Ivan Calderon, the Hall of Famer,
04:46 former 105 and 108 pound champion,
04:49 also worked with him.
04:50 And this young man had 500 amateur fights
04:53 out of Ecuador, so he believes
04:56 that he just needs to change his mentality, Dre.
04:59 He can't think like an opponent anymore.
05:01 He's gotta come in with the mentality to be a winner.
05:04 - Well, now's the moment right now.
05:06 Like, when he gets hit with the kind of shots
05:08 he's getting hit with,
05:10 or there looks to be a skill differential between the two,
05:14 he's still gotta keep pressing.
05:15 He still has to go forward and try to win,
05:18 but he can't allow himself to go into a shell
05:20 and get overwhelmed by Carrington.
05:22 - Because that right hand of Shushu
05:24 just landed above the glove of Porozo.
05:29 Porozo means porous, and his defense
05:31 is looking porous against Shushu Carrington.
05:34 - Sometimes fans at home think that power in boxing
05:38 and strength is the only scary thing.
05:40 Skill can be scary too.
05:42 When you get hit with three or four shots
05:45 and you know you didn't know that,
05:46 you're trying to figure out how you got hit with that
05:48 and you try to land a shot and you get countered again,
05:51 that can spook you, that can scare you
05:52 and make you not wanna punch.
05:54 - That right hand from Shushu.
06:08 In close, unnerving, Porozo is now,
06:12 he uses that same hand, but he goes down to the body.
06:15 Stick to the face, stick again.
06:18 - After a nice fank from Carrington that froze Porozo
06:22 that allowed Carrington to land those two and a half shots.
06:25 Barely missed the third one.
06:27 - Locking that shot with the forearms is Shushu.
06:34 - Carrington is not worried about that.
06:36 In fact, he wants Porozo to throw,
06:38 he wants to open him up so he can count.
06:41 - Nice body work from Carrington
06:43 as Porozo tries to answer with a right
06:44 to the body of his own.
06:45 - That's what Porozo has to do,
06:48 he may be outgunned early in these exchanges,
06:50 but he's gotta keep pressing in hopes
06:52 that something gets through
06:53 where he can get some respect from Carrington.
06:55 - Porozo has nine knockouts and 16 victories as a pro,
06:58 so he's got a little bit of pop.
07:00 He has a car that he uses as an Uber back home
07:04 and he owns a motorcycle that his family runs
07:07 as a delivery service, so he's an entrepreneur
07:10 as well as a fighter.
07:11 Nice right uppercut from Carrington.
07:14 - Carrington is the only one in the ring
07:16 who's only job is to fight.
07:17 - Porozo just missed an overhand right,
07:22 maybe grazed Carrington,
07:24 but did not trouble him at all.
07:26 Good exchange from both guys.
07:32 (bell rings)
07:36 - Tonight is all about the junior welterweights,
07:40 Teofimo Lopez and Josh Taylor,
07:42 who looks to steal the show.
07:43 Xander Zayas, the Puerto Rican prospect at 15 and 0,
07:48 ranked number five as the junior middleweight contender.
07:52 This is Puerto Rican Day weekend.
07:54 He hoped to be headlining by now.
07:56 Several injuries kept him out of the ring last year,
08:00 but here he is out of San Juan, Puerto Rico,
08:03 living in Florida at just age 20.
08:05 He was the youngest fighter ever signed by Top Rank
08:08 at 16 years old, Dre, and he is an old soul
08:13 in a young man's body who's poised beyond his years.
08:16 - Xander Zayas is on his way.
08:18 I think it's just a matter of time.
08:19 He does have questions he needs to continue to answer
08:22 about his chin and if he ever has to come from behind
08:25 or he faces stiff competition
08:29 where things aren't going his way.
08:31 I think he will.
08:32 From what I've seen and from what I hear,
08:34 he seems to be that kind of fighter
08:35 that can answer the call.
08:36 And if so, he's Puerto Rico's next great one.
08:39 - Started boxing at five years old and here he is,
08:42 15 years later, as the co-main event on a big card on ESPN.
08:47 Right after our ESPN+ card,
08:51 we invite you to move over to ESPN
08:53 at around 10 after the UFC show.
08:56 And then for the interviews,
08:58 we'll wait for you right here on ESPN+
09:01 for the State of Boxing.
09:03 - Porozo has to continue to not be discouraged,
09:08 continue to throw,
09:10 not really heed the punches of Carrington
09:14 and just focus on getting his through.
09:16 That's the best opportunity he can put himself
09:20 in to try to win.
09:21 He's not gonna go punch for punch and skill for skill.
09:24 But his lane, the best chance that he has to win
09:28 is just keep throwing.
09:29 - Porozo's a fighter with six losses
09:32 in his professional career.
09:33 He goes up and down in weight.
09:36 He was stopped by Raymond Murataya.
09:38 He also lost to both cousins,
09:40 Henry Lebron, who just saw earlier tonight,
09:42 and Orlando Gonzalez by decision.
09:47 His first loss though,
09:51 was against former world champion Alberto Machado
09:54 out of Puerto Rico.
09:55 I mean, he's only been in against the toughest fighters
09:58 and up in covers as you see the right hook
10:00 from Shushu Carrington with a right hook.
10:03 - Good sequence right there from Carrington.
10:09 Jabs to the head, pushes Porozo back to get some space.
10:13 Then he jabs him to the body.
10:15 Now you're seeing another style being employed right now,
10:18 which is bully style.
10:21 It's not quite walking Porozo down,
10:23 but he's starting to do that.
10:25 Starting to bully him and say,
10:29 you may be the bigger man, but you're not the stronger man.
10:31 And I'm going to hit you at will.
10:33 - Yeah, that's a nice liver shot there
10:34 from Shushu Carrington,
10:36 who's fighting for the eighth time in 20 months as a pro.
10:41 So he's moving quickly
10:44 and they are bringing up his level of competition.
10:48 At least Porozo is no slouch.
10:49 But he's making him leery of throwing the punches here
10:54 in round three of the scheduled eight round.
10:56 - But he can't afford to be leery, Porozo.
10:58 He's got to keep throwing.
11:00 He's got to keep throwing
11:01 because he's getting hit when he doesn't throw.
11:03 So he might as well throw, get hit, and then throw again.
11:07 - You can say that.
11:12 I can't say that.
11:13 - Because you've done it.
11:14 If I say it, it sounds self-serving.
11:17 Like, man, what you talking about?
11:18 You've never been in there.
11:18 If you say it, there's some credence to that.
11:21 Right uppercut there from Shushu.
11:22 - That's what Porozo needs to get off right there.
11:24 Don't let Carrington have a beautiful combination
11:27 with no pressure.
11:28 Put some pressure by throwing after he throws.
11:33 (bell rings)
11:37 - Three rounds in the books
11:38 for Shushu Carrington and Luis Porozo,
11:41 as once again, K.Karoma with the instructions
11:44 in that corner as Mike Basil puts in the work on the ice.
11:48 - We overdoing certain things,
11:52 but this man is very simple.
11:54 You see him with the air muscle.
11:55 What do we do when you got the air muscle?
11:57 Everybody's yelling about it, son.
11:58 Now look, when you got him in center,
12:00 why you ain't bumping him?
12:01 Bump him.
12:02 His legs aren't sturdy.
12:04 You sitting there letting him grab you, that's why.
12:05 Bump him.
12:06 And then you get what you want.
12:08 Come on, believe in it.
12:09 Push yourself.
12:10 - Good exchanges from Bryce Carrington.
12:20 Excuse me, Bruce Carrington.
12:22 Just walking down Porozo.
12:23 Beautiful shot right there.
12:25 Natural right hook that we've seen Carrington
12:27 use in the past.
12:28 He waited to the right opportunity.
12:30 Wasted two punches right there.
12:31 Didn't really want to land it.
12:32 That's the punch.
12:33 He actually wanted to land upstairs.
12:36 He caused Porozo's attention to go to the body
12:39 because he threw that hook,
12:40 but that's really the ending shot.
12:41 That's the finishing shot that Carrington really wanted.
12:44 - Dre, when we go to a corner and I hear a conversation
12:47 where the fighter is engaged with the trainer,
12:50 like, look, he's got his earmuffs off.
12:52 What do we do?
12:53 Body.
12:54 - I love it when there's that connection between the two
12:57 because you're not just yelling at a fighter.
13:01 You're actually having a conversation
13:02 and you're showing him and leading him
13:04 to see what you're seeing.
13:05 - Right, and it lets you know that the fighter,
13:07 if he's talking back, that he's calm
13:09 and that he's very present and he's in the moment.
13:24 - In the corner of Porozo, they're saying,
13:25 he wants the box.
13:26 I need you to rough it up, get inside,
13:28 but then you risk getting clipped with the uppercut
13:30 like Carrington just landed.
13:31 Although Porozo finally was able to get a couple shots in.
13:34 - That's where Porozo wants to live.
13:45 Dangerous spot, but so is being mid-ranger outside.
13:48 There's really no safe spot with Bruce Carrington.
13:51 So put yourself in the best position.
13:53 Let your hands go.
13:54 Right there, he should have let a shot go.
13:56 Just like that.
13:57 - Ooh, and that's exactly what Kei Kuroma asked for.
14:03 Why aren't you bumping him when you're on the inside,
14:05 creating that space and setting up that range
14:08 for your uppercut to land with power?
14:10 Bump and punch.
14:14 - Carrington is dangerous
14:15 when he feels like he's got his fighter, ooh,
14:18 on the way, hurt and reeling.
14:21 Punch selection is excellent.
14:23 Power is excellent.
14:25 Accuracy is excellent.
14:27 That's probably a good idea if you're not gonna punch.
14:31 And your Porozo is to hold on by some time.
14:35 - Porozo right now looks lost.
14:37 - Well, he's being out-skilled.
14:40 He's been hurt.
14:42 And he realizes that his size, good shot from Carrington.
14:45 - And that was a left uppercut, Dre,
14:47 the first time he lands that shot.
14:49 - Porozo's realizing that the size differential
14:52 is not having any effect on Carrington.
14:55 He could care less.
14:57 - Now bleeding from the mouth is Porozo,
14:59 who now takes another right uppercut from Shushu,
15:02 and it's becoming target practice,
15:04 going downstairs and upstairs now.
15:06 - Well-placed shots.
15:11 He sees it.
15:12 Carrington, he lets the shot go,
15:13 and it typically lands flush.
15:16 Good, sticky right hand right there.
15:17 But that's what Porozo has to do.
15:19 He's gotta throw when Carrington throws
15:21 or right after Carrington throws.
15:22 - Stop, stop, stop, stop!
15:25 - Porozo landed a nice counter,
15:26 but it was Carrington with a damaging left uppercut
15:28 once again.
15:29 (thudding)
15:32 When talking to Josh Taylor in the lead-up to this fight,
15:35 which is our main event,
15:36 Teofimo Lopez did hold his words
15:38 in his assessment of Josh Taylor.
15:40 (bell ringing)
15:47 - There's no plan A, plan B, no, no, no, no.
15:50 The way we work is just adapting.
15:52 You know, all the technical parts of Taylor,
15:54 you know, he has the accolades.
15:55 You gotta respect that.
15:56 Very true, very true.
15:58 And that's why I've been working hard and busting my butt.
16:01 I like to go after these challenges.
16:02 Look, all these other fighters out there right now,
16:04 they're not facing no one like Taylor.
16:06 They're fighting come-ups.
16:07 They're fighting things to build their records.
16:09 I'm someone that's old school, you know?
16:12 Blood, sweat, and tears, Sugar Ray Robinson.
16:14 That's really what it comes to.
16:15 - What mistakes do you see in Josh Taylor
16:17 when you watch him fight?
16:18 - There's a lot.
16:19 There's a lot of mistakes.
16:20 I mean, hey, all the fighters he has faced,
16:22 a lot of them are just very easy to manipulate on
16:25 and adapt to.
16:26 So there's a style that he knows,
16:28 that he works on, that he does,
16:31 that has worked for him for a long time.
16:33 And even if they was to change it right now,
16:35 it's too late because when you go in the ring,
16:37 he's gonna go right back to that main base.
16:40 - From Bethea with an interview
16:45 on the Tio Fimo Lopez side for that great show.
16:47 And it was Gareth Davies with Josh Taylor
16:51 as Luis Poroso got looked at by the doctors.
16:55 Now they are going back to their respective spots.
16:59 And referee,
17:00 Shawn Clark says,
17:03 "Show me something as we come out for round number five
17:05 of the scheduled eight rounder."
17:06 Shushu Carrington looking spectacular so far
17:10 against 32 year old Luis Poroso.
17:12 (crowd shouting)
17:15 Carrington with the stick,
17:22 trying to open up the defense of Poroso.
17:25 - Break, break, break, break, break.
17:28 - Shushu a very popular fighter
17:35 amongst the locals here in New York,
17:38 representing Brownsville, Brooklyn.
17:42 - Well, he not only can fight, he's got charisma.
17:44 - You know, some guys pay for media training, Dre.
17:52 This young man has been on YouTube since he was
17:55 six, seven years old.
17:57 And you can tell when you speak with him,
17:59 he's just very poised, knows what he wants,
18:02 newly engaged to his high school sweetheart,
18:05 Zara James.
18:10 And you see a guy who's wiry like Carrington
18:13 and fighters might underestimate just how strong he is.
18:17 - Well, if they're watching any of his fights,
18:19 they shouldn't do that.
18:21 And they should realize that it's not about bulk.
18:26 What does he do in the ring?
18:27 How does he move his opponents?
18:28 What kind of power does he have?
18:30 And he's shown that he's plenty strong
18:32 and he will even get strong.
18:33 - Nice right hand there from Carrington,
18:37 Poroso trying to go to the body.
18:40 (crowd cheering)
18:42 Nice left hook from Poroso.
18:44 Good feint and then landed left.
18:45 - He only landed it because he threw it.
18:47 - Wasn't it Jordan said,
18:51 you miss a hundred percent of the shots you don't take.
18:54 Poroso had been missing a hundred percent
18:57 of the shots he didn't take.
18:59 - Carrington's shoulder right hand tried to
19:09 get one over on Poroso and land a hook,
19:11 but it just didn't land.
19:13 - Pain slowing down a little bit here in round number five.
19:31 Poroso not willing to throw
19:33 and Chuchu looking for the openings.
19:36 Creates a double right.
19:37 And Poroso's durable and he's a veteran
19:39 and he knows how to survive.
19:41 And sometimes it's difficult
19:43 to get a veteran guy out of there.
19:45 Poroso's got six losses.
19:46 And you see Carrington trying to think his way through
19:51 this period of the fight.
19:52 - When we talk about uppercut three,
19:59 a lot of times it's the right uppercut.
20:01 Chuchu tonight has been effective
20:03 with both the right and the left uppercut.
20:05 Why is that?
20:06 Well, Chuchu has shown great arsenal tonight,
20:08 great punch selection,
20:09 but the uppercuts are beautiful
20:11 because he's right in the wheelhouse
20:13 and he can be hit,
20:14 but he's doing all the hitting by taking half step backs
20:17 and ripping those right uppercuts,
20:19 those left uppercuts like you see right there.
20:21 It's a beautiful shot.
20:22 When you notice your opponent is leaning over their feet
20:24 and you just create just enough space
20:27 to get that kind of shot off.
20:28 Uppercuts hurt.
20:29 And that's one of the easiest punches
20:31 to hurt an opponent with
20:32 because they just don't see it coming.
20:35 - Chuchu not even breathing hard so far here
20:37 after five rounds in the books.
20:39 The other thing about an uppercut is the intimacy.
20:41 - Well, he looks a little bored too.
20:43 I mean, he's only not,
20:44 he just looks a little bored.
20:46 - Bro, those eyes.
20:52 - Look at that corner.
20:54 - But that could be dangerous for a young fighter.
20:56 - I think he's good.
20:57 I think if anything, he's probably just trying
20:58 to think his way, like I said,
20:59 in the last round through this moment,
21:01 you know, he's got a lot of time.
21:03 You know, when you're young, you're very presumptuous.
21:06 You assume, "Hey, I land these kinds of shots.
21:08 You should go."
21:09 Well, right now, Perroso's not going anywhere
21:12 and Carrington got some working from him.
21:14 - That was a nice short left hook from Carrington
21:17 as Perroso tried to commit with the right hand.
21:19 - Carrington trying different things.
21:23 He's trying to change the level.
21:24 He's going up and down with his legs.
21:26 Then you see him kind of point with his left hand down
21:29 to try to get Perroso to look there so he can counter.
21:31 He's trying to do different things right now
21:34 to get the right shot through on Perroso.
21:35 - And you saw that exaggerated reaction from Perroso
21:38 on the feint of Carrington.
21:40 So he's got him flinching.
21:41 - Yes, he does.
21:42 And if I'm Carrington, I go back to that.
21:44 Good exchange right there.
21:45 Good punches landed from Perroso.
21:47 But if I'm Carrington, I go back to that
21:49 to see if I can get Perroso to react again
21:52 to try to get him to try to land a clean shot.
21:54 - Absolutely.
21:55 Perroso's tough.
21:59 Takes a shot to the body there from Carrington though.
22:02 - Guys like Perroso won't lay down.
22:03 You gotta help him.
22:05 You gotta help him out the door.
22:07 But it's not gonna be easy.
22:08 - Perroso's been matched tough throughout his career.
22:14 So nothing given, everything earned.
22:17 Tonight he's earning his paycheck
22:19 against Shushu Carrington.
22:21 (crowd chattering)
22:24 - There's Perroso working to the body
22:37 as his corner wants him to do.
22:39 And it lands a shot to the temple of Carrington.
22:41 Those could be dangerous.
22:42 - Yes, they can.
22:43 - And it may be what you were saying, Dre.
22:49 A little bit of just being bored in there.
22:52 And those are the little mistakes
22:54 that Kei Kuroma was alluding to that can cost you.
22:57 - I think Carrington needs to take
22:59 some power off of the punches.
23:00 The majority of the punches that he's throwing,
23:03 they're hard.
23:04 And Perroso's timed that.
23:06 He feels that you're gonna throw hard.
23:07 So for the most part, he can evade the punch
23:10 or brace for it.
23:11 Carrington needs to pick up his punches.
23:14 Different cadences, different speeds,
23:15 and then come back to the power.
23:17 (crowd chattering)
23:20 But he's a very accurate puncher,
23:24 a very economical puncher Carrington is.
23:27 And he doesn't like to throw unless he believes he can land.
23:30 Well, Perroso has picked up on that as well.
23:34 That's a different cadence right there.
23:37 That's what he needs to continue to do.
23:39 - Punch variety, mixing it up, many ways to say it.
23:46 And that set up a nice body shot
23:49 from Carrington on Perroso,
23:50 that left hook to the solar plexus.
23:52 (bell rings)
24:02 Luis Perroso breathing from the mouth heavily
24:04 as Chuchu comes back to his corner
24:06 to receive instructions from Kei Kuroma.
24:09 - Good.
24:12 (upbeat music)
24:16 - Start swiping the guard.
24:18 Pull the guard down.
24:19 Every time you get that move,
24:21 you take it away because you're gonna carry it away
24:23 with the wide shot.
24:24 Shorten your shots up a bit
24:25 and you're gonna get what you want.
24:27 Because while you have him here,
24:28 you start going wide with it, okay?
24:30 No, you're shortening him up.
24:32 When you got that body,
24:32 see how you're going to the body?
24:34 Shorten it, boom, boom, double it.
24:36 And then step around.
24:38 I thought you got a beat, then he gonna lean on it.
24:40 Come on, man.
24:44 - That's because of the arm.
24:46 He's swearing up too much, that's why he's grabbing you.
24:51 Come on.
24:52 Okay, show it to the fans.
24:52 - Yes, show it in here.
24:54 You're gonna get it.
24:55 - Just saw what the rest of the night holds for us.
25:01 Damian Keneva, the undefeated Polish heavyweight up next.
25:04 And Omar Rosario against Giancarlo Rivera.
25:07 A fight that promises a little extra spice
25:10 as two Puerto Ricans face off on Puerto Rican Day.
25:14 - And it's the final weekend here in New York City.
25:18 Round seven of a scheduled eight rounder
25:20 between Shushu Carrington and Luis Porozo,
25:23 who's fighting for the 11th time in the United States.
25:27 Good conversation with Kei Karoma in the corner.
25:33 Asking Carrington to bring, pull down the guard of Porozo
25:37 to set up his overhead shots.
25:40 There's that jab from Shushu.
25:43 - I like these kind of fights.
25:45 The young fighters on the way up
25:47 can't have early knockouts all the time.
25:50 You can't make it on SportsCenter,
25:52 top 10 all the time and expect to be ready
25:55 when you face top contenders
25:56 and then ultimately other champions.
25:58 You need to think through some stuff.
26:00 You need to have a little bit of hardship.
26:02 And I'm not saying Carrington has had much hardship tonight,
26:05 but he's having to think through some stuff.
26:06 He's landed some good shots and Porozo's still here.
26:09 This is good for the young career of Bruce Carrington.
26:12 - Absolutely.
26:14 When you get a fighter who can take your best shot
26:15 and keep coming at you,
26:17 that's something that then forces you
26:19 to figure out different ways of doing it.
26:21 And that's what Kei Karoma was alluding to in the corner,
26:24 switching it up.
26:25 - Big deep breath that Carrington did.
26:32 I need my young fighter to take those along his journey.
26:35 He's got to have those moments.
26:38 - You always talk about that, Dre.
26:40 That's one of your biggest sayings is like,
26:42 what's he going to do when he has to take a deep breath?
26:44 And we just saw him take a deep breath.
26:46 - When something's not working like you see here,
26:48 Porozo's got a good veteran crafty defense.
26:52 He's not super polished,
26:54 but he's been around the game long enough
26:56 to protect himself and to make things difficult.
26:58 - Good job by Shawn Clark tonight as well.
27:04 Nice left to the body and then left uppercut.
27:07 We saw the quickness that in this building,
27:10 we've seen Tito Trinidad deliver on so many occasions
27:13 that double left hook.
27:14 - But I also love it because Carrington
27:18 is at such a high level that he can have some moments
27:21 that we deem difficult or not easy,
27:24 but yet still dominate and still learn
27:26 and ultimately still win in the process.
27:29 - That's a nice check left hook as Carrington was countering
27:33 and now he's digging downstairs.
27:34 - Yes, I like the whole combination,
27:37 the sequence and the punch selection from Bruce Carrington.
27:40 - We talk about steps in the right direction.
27:52 That's exactly what we're seeing from Chuchu Carrington
27:55 here in the seventh round
27:57 as he connects on a nice right hand.
27:59 And if you're excited by this fight,
28:01 wait until you see what we have in store for you
28:04 in the month of July.
28:06 (whistle blows)
28:09 - On Saturday, July 1st, it's the Ohio homecoming
28:12 for heavyweight Jared Anderson.
28:14 With all 14 wins by knockout,
28:16 he steps up against an undefeated rival.
28:18 On July 22nd, the return of recent
28:21 undisputed champ George Cambosis,
28:23 facing Maxie Hughes in a title elimination.
28:26 On Tuesday morning, July 25th on ESPN Plus,
28:29 Naoya Inoue, who many list as the number one fighter
28:33 in the world, goes up in weight to take on Stephen Fulton,
28:36 the impressive unified champ.
28:38 Cool boy step, defending his two belts against the monster.
28:42 And on Friday night, July 28th, Superbad puts on the cape.
28:46 The sensational Sonesa Estrada
28:49 defends her strawweight belt,
28:51 live from Vegas on ESPN Plus.
28:53 - So many fights to get hyped about, Dre.
28:59 (whistle blows)
29:01 - And tonight, what about Josh Taylor
29:03 against Tio Fimo Lopez, a former undisputed champion
29:06 against a former unified lightweight champion.
29:09 That'll be at 10 Eastern when we move over to ESPN.
29:13 Round eight, the final round
29:18 between Bruce Carrington and Luis.
29:20 But also, what would you like to see
29:21 in this final round out of Shushu?
29:23 - I think he's doing what he needs to do.
29:27 He's being patient,
29:29 but yet taking advantage of opportunities
29:31 and letting his hands go.
29:32 He's landed good shots
29:33 and he hasn't gotten out of his,
29:37 gotten beyond himself and gotten too wild
29:39 because Perroso's crafty enough to counter.
29:41 He's doing what he's supposed to do.
29:43 He's thinking through, he's trying different things,
29:46 round in and round out.
29:47 Some rounds are better than others,
29:49 but he's been in control the whole time.
29:52 Perroso is just being the old veteran that he is.
29:56 - No pressure.
29:56 - I think the poise and the patience
30:06 is my biggest takeaway from Carrington in this fight.
30:09 - That's what you want to hear about a fighter
30:12 in his eighth professional fight.
30:15 You want to hear poise, patience,
30:17 but you want to see this type of action,
30:19 digging downstairs to the body,
30:21 creating openings to the head.
30:24 But I like it because there's going to be some nights
30:26 where this is all you're going to get for 12 rounds,
30:30 not just eight when he steps up to championship round
30:33 and the crowd may boo, they may be displeased,
30:35 but it's about winning and moving on to the next assignment.
30:40 Vel Carrington is stepping it up right here
30:43 and is putting himself in a position
30:45 to hurt Perroso and possibly get a knockout.
30:48 - Yeah, Sean Clark already said, "Show me something."
30:50 So Luis Perroso is going to at least have to let his hands go
30:54 because the referee is intent.
30:57 His eyes are focused on the reactions from Luis Perroso here
31:02 with a minute left.
31:03 - Carrington has his eyes fixed to the body of Perroso,
31:05 but he really wants the shot to the head.
31:08 Trying to look Perroso off.
31:10 - Show me something.
31:11 - Ref looks like he's looking to stop him.
31:16 - My break, my break.
31:17 - He's waiting for one punch
31:18 and to just pounce.
31:21 He's so close.
31:22 - You got to show me something.
31:23 - That's the third time this round and there it is.
31:26 A two punch combination with 43 seconds left, Dre.
31:29 It's premature.
31:30 - I'm not sure what that was about right there.
31:33 Perroso hadn't shown anything
31:35 that he hadn't shown throughout the fight.
31:37 He's taken all the shots well.
31:38 He may stumble back,
31:39 but facial expression didn't change.
31:41 His eyes weren't dilated or big.
31:44 From what I saw, he seemed to be just fine
31:46 and the fight was almost over.
31:47 I'm not sure what that was about.
31:49 - Yeah, you got to give a fighter like Perroso,
31:51 who is tough, the benefit of the doubt
31:53 in terms of going the distance
31:55 because it's not like he was hurt
31:58 and there was a shot that really shook him.
32:01 There were clean shots,
32:02 but he'd been taking clean shots the entire night.
32:05 - Again, nothing had happened
32:07 that hadn't happened earlier in the fight.
32:10 A fighter like this, here you see the end right here,
32:12 that referee kind of tipped himself off
32:13 because he kept saying, "Show me something."
32:16 - You got to show me something.
32:18 - So he had a little shot right there, good shot right there.
32:19 - That's a two-piece.
32:21 I mean, you can hit with a two-punch combination like that.
32:24 You're going to stumble back,
32:25 but I'm looking at the eyes of Perroso
32:28 and he blocked actually the left hook.
32:30 He's fine enough to push the ref back
32:34 and sort of argue with him.
32:36 It's a bit premature.
32:37 Guys like Perroso may not win these kinds of fights,
32:40 but a win for them is to finish on their feet,
32:43 put on a good fight,
32:44 and to go home with their held head high.
32:46 And I think that was taken from him tonight.
32:47 - Absolutely.
32:48 - I mean, a journeyman like Perroso,
32:51 his whole stamp is to say,
32:53 "I went the distance with this guy."
32:55 - "I went the distance, I finished on my feet."
32:56 And he earned that right because he endured
32:59 a lot more punishment earlier in the fight
33:01 than he did in that sequence.
33:02 And he had his moments, some brief moments,
33:04 where he landed a few shots.
33:06 He earned the right to finish on his feet.
33:07 - It was a clear win from bell to bell for Bruce Carrington,
33:11 but maybe just an early stoppage.
33:14 Let's send it up now to Mark Chinook
33:17 with the official time.
33:18 (bell rings)
33:19 - Ladies and gentlemen, here inside the theater
33:21 at Madison Square Garden, referee Shawn Clark
33:24 calls a stop to this bout at two minutes,
33:27 17 seconds of round number eight.
33:30 For your winner by technical knockout,
33:33 Bruce "Shoo Shoo" Carrington.
33:37 (bell rings)
33:38 - Fifth knockout win as a pro in eight victories for Shoo.
