00:00 Hi everyone, I'm Courtney Bright. I'm the Senior Social and Digital Editor at American Salon.
00:04 We are live in Las Vegas right now at Redken Symposium.
00:07 We are also back on Facebook and I have Shelley Gregory with me here.
00:11 You guys may know her online as Shelley Gregory Hair and we're gonna do some more braiding tutorials and by we I mean Shelley.
00:17 What are you gonna do?
00:18 So I'm gonna do a modern twist on a crown braid. Something really simple, but make it look modern with the way
00:25 I'm gonna part it in the way that I pin it together.
00:27 Perfect. So I'll let you get started and if you guys have any questions, feel free to ask Shelley.
00:31 Okay, so this is my beautiful model and assistant actually, Mackenzie. Her beautiful red hair.
00:37 So first I just prepped it with some loose curls just to keep that nice bend in there making it easier for when I braid.
00:44 And I'm gonna part it into two sections just right in the middle all the way down her head.
00:50 Just right down the middle.
00:58 It doesn't have to be perfect.
01:00 Just so you know where to end with the first braid.
01:03 I'll keep that separate over here and then starting at the very top,
01:09 I like to part out the first section and I'm gonna do just a classic Dutch braid.
01:22 And I put a little bit of hairspray in her hair just so that the curl would hold but it wouldn't be sticky when I was braiding.
01:29 Because I want it to look really soft.
01:33 (background noise)
01:52 People sharing your video.
01:54 Thank you.
01:56 Michelle Peters.
01:58 Thanks guys.
02:00 Do you prefer curly hair or straight hair? Because you prepped her with curly.
02:04 So Mackenzie has really straight, actually really thick hair.
02:08 So on her hair I will always curl because it's naturally straight.
02:12 Someone that has natural curl, I won't necessarily do it.
02:16 Unless it's a wedding or an event where they need a lot of hold.
02:19 But I like people's natural texture normally to be worked in with it.
02:24 Except for when it's straight because then you're gonna get those ends that stick out and kinda don't wanna work with you.
02:31 Those layers or...
02:33 Can you pivot around now?
02:35 Yeah.
02:37 (background noise)
02:42 There we go.
02:47 And I like to do it really tight so then when I go back in and loosen it, it's not gonna make draping around her face.
02:54 Do you have any tricks for keeping it tight?
02:56 So I think braiding underhand like I am as opposed to overhand, that helps me really keep a good grip on it.
03:05 I have a lot of control and I'm actually, I hope I'm not hurting you Mackenzie, but I have my hand like on her head really tight.
03:13 Resting my wrist as I go down.
03:17 And I usually, I'm pretty heavy handed and I'm pushing her head as I go just so that it stays tight with her.
03:24 When she puts her head back up, it's gonna form to her head.
03:28 So now that I've gotten past her ear, what I'm gonna do is I'm grabbing from this side, but I'm not grabbing from this side anymore.
03:38 So I'm not grabbing new sections under here, I'm just braiding it.
03:43 So this side I grab, and on this side I just braid.
03:49 It's called a laced braid, so a Dutch braid into a laced braid.
03:54 Because I want a little bit of that draping I said earlier on this side when I pull it.
04:03 (laughing)
04:05 Lewis is saying hello from California.
04:11 Hi Lewis!
04:13 And you bring it all the way down to the end.
04:20 See I have this little loose piece, but it's gonna get pinned in, so don't worry about that.
04:26 Just bring it all the way as far down, her hair is so thick it's hard to go to the very tips, but as far down as you can.
04:34 Because I'm going to pin this under the braid at the top.
04:38 So the tighter I can braid it down at the, oop!
04:42 At the bottom, the better it's gonna be to hide.
04:45 Patty Hodge from Chicago.
04:48 Hi guys!
04:51 Okay, I'll take a rubber band please.
04:53 Thank you.
04:55 Okay, now to her right side.
05:08 Turn you back around.
05:10 I'm just gonna brush her out really quick so it's not as sticky to get through these curls.
05:21 (brushing)
05:23 Starting with the three sections and going under for the Dutch braid.
05:39 And again, a really tight grip up here.
05:46 So that when we go back in to pull it out, it's gonna be even still and have nice smoothness to her head.
05:56 (brushing)
05:58 Judy is saying hi from Walla Walla, Washington.
06:20 Walla Walla, I like that name.
06:23 Hi Judy.
06:25 I think I braid faster on the right.
06:28 Ah, good.
06:29 Sondra Decourt has a question.
06:31 Yes.
06:32 How do you deal with those flyways in the front? Do you like them or not? And how do you make that decision?
06:37 I think with her hair, it's fine. It looks, I think it looks nice with her texture.
06:43 If someone is self-conscious about it, if they get frizzy or little curls,
06:47 then I would have started with some kind of wax or pomade to hold that down.
06:51 Or maybe even have it be a little bit wet in the front of the spray bottle, not anywhere else,
06:56 and hold that down and then spray it.
06:58 But normally I like a little flyway. Not so perfect.
07:17 Okay, so now again I'm adding to the left on this right side.
07:21 This piece here.
07:26 And then just braiding this piece in.
07:30 Not grabbing more hair.
07:33 So adding to the left and then braiding it in without grabbing more.
07:43 But I really think that braiding underhand, just, you have way more control.
07:52 And I really like tighter braids lately too.
07:56 Even though I'm going to loosen this a little bit afterwards, I like braids that are tighter to the head lately.
08:01 I feel like it makes a little more modern look.
08:08 [silence]
08:27 John Flynn is asking, "How about using dry shampoo before you style? How do you feel about that?"
08:33 That would be a different look I think.
08:35 If you, if she did have a lot of oil, yeah I would start with that.
08:38 But her hair is freshly cleaned, so she doesn't need it.
08:41 But if I wanted a more matted, kind of airy look, I think that would be really pretty.
08:49 It just depends on your, the end look that you're going for.
08:53 Cherokee Wilson is asking, "Will this work on really long hair?"
08:57 Oh yeah, this will be beautiful on long hair.
09:02 The longer the hair, the more you can play with it.
09:05 Why is your assistant such a slacker?
09:08 I know.
09:10 Okay, so now I'm going to start pulling from the bottom.
09:13 And I just do one at a time.
09:17 And I like to put the rubber band in before.
09:20 I just feel like I have more control, knowing that I have this kind of safety down here.
09:31 And that's the reason that I curl before, is see how these ends are sticking out?
09:36 If I wouldn't have curled it, it would have been sticking more straight out like this one.
09:39 This one's easier to hide.
09:41 But this will kind of go with the braid.
09:43 Keep that shape that I want.
09:47 [inaudible]
09:51 Okay, so here we go.
09:54 [inaudible]
09:59 [inaudible]
10:23 Don't be afraid to pull too hard, because you can always rework those ends or anything that sticks back in.
10:29 I'm going to go back in with bobby pins and secure all this.
10:32 So if you feel like, "Oh, this looks too loose," that's okay.
10:35 It's so easy to secure.
10:37 But you want that softness you're getting when you pull.
10:39 Thank you.
10:41 Can you pinch and pull as you braid?
10:46 I guess the question is before you put the band in.
10:50 Yeah, you could.
10:52 Definitely. Everyone has their own style.
10:54 I just feel more comfortable when I put that in there, because then I'm not watching these ends as much.
10:59 I can just keep going all the way up.
11:01 If I would have started down here, and then be like, "Okay, I have to remember to put the rubber band in."
11:05 But I actually usually end up taking the rubber band out at the end.
11:10 I kind of like to see how well I can hide it.
11:13 So, this side looks good.
11:18 Now I'm going to pin it under.
11:22 [no audio]
11:28 And this rubber band is pretty chunky, so I think...
11:32 Let's see. I might be able to hide it.
11:34 She has a lot of hair.
11:36 But if someone's hair is finer and it's showing through, just pull it out right before you pin it.
11:41 Because you don't want that rubber band showing.
11:45 [no audio]
11:52 And you can anchor it down the spine of the braid, too.
11:55 Sometimes I'll do that.
11:57 Right where the middle meets.
12:00 Just put it in there.
12:02 How do you decide where to put pins?
12:05 So, anchoring it down the middle where it meets is a good one for the spine, I call it.
12:10 And then wherever... See?
12:12 So this is kind of sticking out too much, then I know it needs a little more support.
12:15 So I'll kind of find a place in the middle of it to put it in.
12:19 And then when it's sticking too far out from the head like this,
12:25 because you know they're going to want to see their profile view, the back view, and pictures, too,
12:31 I just like to make sure it's pretty close to the head and then these pretty pieces falling out around it.
12:37 And this one's falling out.
12:40 I just kind of go with the feel of what their hair is giving me.
12:44 April Nelson is suggesting a super cute dress with this hairstyle.
12:53 Oh, what kind of dress, April?
12:56 What do you see?
13:04 Okay, so we'll just do those many pins for now, and then I'll do the other side, and then I'll probably come back over here.
13:10 Just to keep it secure.
13:12 So now I'm going to start, and I go side to side when I pull out.
13:17 Pull this side, left side, a couple pieces.
13:22 April said, "Planets and rockets."
13:25 Perfect. Planets and rockets actually go with everything.
13:30 Susan Acompo says that she loves this.
13:33 Yay, thank you, Susan.
14:01 So if you wanted to, you could put the bobby pins in before you start pulling,
14:05 if you're nervous about pulling it out and it's going to just fall out.
14:08 Go ahead and secure that.
14:10 Steven Julian is asking, "Is side to side easier than pulling apart at the same time?"
14:16 I do. I think it's easier.
14:19 I feel like I have more control when I go side to side.
14:21 If I just do one side, then I don't know how the other side is going to pull.
14:26 So I go back and forth to see how it's going to react on the other side, back and forth.
14:32 Now we're going to pin this one.
14:40 Shannon Pencil says that her color is so pretty.
14:43 This is her natural color. She has a couple highlights, but thank you.
14:47 So make sure you see where you pinned that other side.
14:51 It's about right there, so meet the middle.
14:53 So when she looks forward in the mirror, it's even.
14:56 Steven's thanking you for your answer.
15:00 Her hair is so soft, you guys. It's like silky.
15:08 It looks like it.
15:09 This is what virgin hair feels like.
15:11 Rarely work with.
15:13 It's actually kind of harder.
15:14 It's silky, Shannon.
15:15 Yeah. We need to rough this up.
15:19 It's harder to braid virgin hair, though, because it just slips.
15:23 But it's so beautiful.
15:25 I think I like that little piece sticking out.
15:41 So then when I get to the back here,
15:47 what I'm going to do is make them meet up so they look like they're connected,
15:52 so it doesn't look like two separate braids.
15:54 And that's what gives it the crown look.
15:56 So anchor those together, and then go back in.
16:04 You can even pull some of this, so it's not so tight to her scalp.
16:08 Soften that up, because no one wants to see their cowlick.
16:15 Michelle Donald says, "Thank you for teaching me these new styles."
16:20 You're welcome, Michelle.
16:22 See how that kind of--it makes it look like it's one piece.
16:26 Yeah.
16:27 It looks like a big knot.
16:29 Almost like a Celtic knot.
16:31 I think John Flynn's trying to steal your model.
16:43 I'm asking if she's a hair model, and can she be if she's not.
16:46 She's my hair model, and poor Mackenzie has to--
16:52 Mike, I need you for this. I need you for this.
16:54 Maybe you could get a commission.
16:57 I know. She needs one.
16:59 One time I did an updo on her for a contest that took me two and a half hours,
17:06 with about 300 little rubber bands in her head.
17:09 I thought she was going to kill me.
17:11 But she sat there quietly.
17:13 She loves this.
17:15 So peaceful.
17:29 If you see anything sticking out, you can just kind of tuck it in
17:33 and secure that with a bobby pin.
17:35 Hide that.
17:37 See how it looks from the front.
17:41 So I like to make sure it's balanced on both sides when I look at the front.
17:49 It's hard to do without a mirror in front of you.
17:51 Shannon says it's very romantic. Thank you for sharing this.
17:58 Yeah, this could be a date night. It could be a wedding party.
18:05 Or just a fun day look, even.
18:09 I think you could dress it up with some jewels or just wear it casual with jeans and a t-shirt.
18:15 Alright. That's beautiful.
18:21 Let's finish with a little spray.
18:37 Does anybody have any more questions?
18:39 Did you put product in before you braided her hair?
18:43 Only hairspray.
18:44 That's from Steven Julian.
18:45 Yeah, I only did hairspray.
18:47 Hairspray and curls, just so it's easy to work through her texture.
18:51 And Judy said, "Great job without even having a mirror."
18:55 Absolutely love this.
18:56 From Michelle Bowles and April Nelson has a question.
19:01 Did you mention where you do hair or maybe a school you went to?
19:04 Do you want to give anybody a plug for teaching you?
19:07 Oh my gosh, I've gone to so many classes.
19:09 I'm addicted to education for hair, so I can't name one person.
19:13 But I've been doing hair for 15 years and I work at Square Salon in Las Vegas, where we are now.
19:18 Awesome.
